Quote from Phil’s email: “The main message I would give would be to see a statistician before running the experiment! The access is easy in the design phase - just go to Spectrum Study Navigator, answer a few questions, register the study, and the investigator can then make an appointment. There are FAQ's about what to think about before the consultation. On the other hand, people who come with the experiment run and data in hand may be disappointed, because we will refer them elsewhere (QSU, Stanford Statistics Dept consulting service, SMACC, etc.) That is the key idea to get across.”

WHAT WE CAN DO

Statistics

• Develop design• Compute sample size or

power• Analyze preliminary data

(limited)• Formulate analytic plan• Tell you who to consult for

data management

Other

• Advise on response to journal review

• Provide letter of support for career development grants

Presentation Notes
Response to journal review: it is extremely unlikely that we can be helpful if we have not been part of the design process before experiment

WHAT YOU CAN BRING

Statistics

• Outcomes: Primary & Secondary• Variability of outcomes• Effect size• Number of samples• How many may accrue in a

reasonable period?• What is the maximum sample

size you can manage?

Other

• Reviewer comments about statistical analyses

• Background information• Project• Funding agency

Come as early as possible with the most lead time possible. This gives us the freedom to be creative. If you come early, we give you gourmet food. If you come late, we give you fast food. Effect size: plausible, relevant difference in outcome between groups to be compared
