In 8 Shuttle XP units, more than 210,000 parts are now stored on a footprint of only 84 m² mostly in plastic bins. Order pickers place the parts on trolleys and transport them to the assembly sites. In this system, the innovative Kardex Remstar Fire Solution came into play. In the event of a fi re, residue-free inert gas is used to extinguish the fi re. The novelty about the solution presented by Kardex Remstar: along the entire height of the Shuttle units, nozzles distributed at a distance of 5 cm are ready to inject the gas with only 4 bar directly into the storage units. Gases are distri-buted over the whole system very fast, the oxygen concentration in the air is quickly reduced to below 8.8 percent, and a fi re is extinguished in the shortest possible time. As a result of the low pressure, there is no damage to the stored components. However, a fi re-extinguishing system is only as good as its fi re warning system: at Knorr-Bremse plastic tubes continuously suck in air from the Shuttle interior and check the air for traces of smoke particles. If a limit value is exceeded, the fi re warning signal is issued.

We would be delighted to ex-plain the different processes in detail in a personal consul-tation.

Task defi nition

In the company headquarters in Munich, all components used to be stocked at a decentralised location, the space requirements were enormous. Each assembly work-er had access to the entire stock which lead to large numbers of misplaced items and incorrect stock levels. Knorr-Bremse had therefore decided to pool the buffers for the assembly components at one central location. The company also needed an effective fi re-extinguishing system that would protect the stored parts.

– 8 x Shuttle XP 500 (W x D x H: 3,050 x 864 x 7,350 mm), installed in two 4-unit blocks– Gas extinguishing system with special fi re alarm system – Main discharge: 18 gas bottles inergen gas – Discharge to maintain concentration: 16 gas bottles of nitrogen

– Substantial space savings: 1,000 m² of storage space on a footprint of only 84 m² – Lower error rates during order picking– Reliable fi re warning system with fast detec- tion of smoke particles in Shuttle interior– No damage to Shuttle or stored goods in the event of a fi re
