The perfecT balance beTween safeTy, comforT and lighT weighTThe Dharma helmet by Spiuk is currently one of the flagships of the brand, and of the cycling industry at large. It was a big success last season. One of the most innovative in the market, this helmet was worn by pro teams Caja Rural and Bretagne-Séché Environnement (the latter competing in the Tour de France for the first time in 2014), and MTB World Champion Julie Bresset.

This record of achievement was possible thanks to the work done by the R&D Department, whose team spent time and resources to find the perfect balance between safety, light weight and venting – the three pillars of a racing helmet. The outcome was a model which more than meets the needs of both experienced cycle tourers and remarkable cycling pros.

So says Julie Bresset from BH Suntour, who, after a whole season wearing the new helmet, believes the Dharma delivers ‘excellent comfort, perfect fit and great venting. These features allow you to fully concentrate on the race. It’s superbly comfortable and ensures maximum safety.’

Safety. Comfort. Light weight. A balance you rarely find in a helmet, but a unique chance for deploying the best resources and ideas. The team at the R&D Department knew very well that designing a helmet like this one took flawless construction from the very beginning, right to the tiniest detail.

The cage is key if you want to get an extremely safe and ultralight helmet like the Dharma. This is why this model uses the SUPERCAGE technology. Spiuk sources at the Department for New Product Development say, ‘It’s a component that combines a polyamide structure on the top and back, and a robust front shell made of polypropylene + ABS, which allows for larger vents. This increases the amount of air that flows around your head, which keeps your forehead and temporal area cool.’ This type of construction delivers a model that’s both compact and solid, as well as lightweight and ventilated.

As to safety, the Dharma uses the CONEHEAD technology, an EPS injection system that adds dual density to the impact absorption foam. The even more compact outer layer directly absorbs impact. The inner layer, softer and next to the head, helps attenuate the impact of the interior of the helmet on the head.

Olympic Champion Julie Bresset has worn countless helmets throughout her career. ‘But, without a doubt,’ she says, ‘the Dharma is the one that best integrates the things I consider key to optimise riding performance. This racing helmet has everything I need.’

el perfecTo equilibrio enTre seguridad-conforT-ligerezaEl casco Dharma de Spiuk es actualmente uno de los referentes de la marca y también dentro del ámbito ciclista. Se trata de uno de los grandes éxitos de la temporada pasada. El casco utilizado por el equipo profesional Caja Rural, el debutante en el Tour de Francia 2014 Bretagne Séché-Environment o la actual Campeona del Mundo de MTB Julie Bresset es uno de los más avanzados modelos existentes en el mercado.

No en vano, el departamento de I+D de Spiuk invirtió múltiples recursos y tiempo en lograr un equilibrio perfecto entre seguridad, ligereza y ventilación, tres pilares básicos en un modelo destinado a un uso competitivo. El resultado es un modelo que superó ampliamente las exigencias tanto de cicloturistas experimentados como de los profesionales más notables.

Así lo confirma la rider del equipo BH Suntour Julie Bresset, quien tras una temporada utilizando el nuevo casco, valora del Dharma “el excelente confort de uso de este modelo, tanto por su ajuste como por su gran ventilación. Son detalles que luego te permiten estar 100% concentrada en la carrera. Sin ningún tipo de molestia, muy cómoda y con la seguridad de saber que vas protegida”.

Seguridad-Confort-Ligereza. Un equilibrio difícil de lograr. Pero una oportunidad de desarrollar e implantar los mejores recursos e ideas. Desde el departamento de I+D tenían claro que la creación de un casco de estas características debía construirse perfectamente desde sus cimientos hasta el último detalle.

El esqueleto del Dharma es una pieza clave para alcanzar los niveles exigidos en cuanto a seguridad y ligereza. Por ello, el modelo incorpora la novedosa tecnología SUPERCAGE. Desde el departamento de Desarrollo de Nuevos Proyectos de Spiuk explica que “se trata de una pieza que combina una estructura de refuerzo de poliamida que recorre su parte superior y trasera, y por otra parte una carcasa frontal reforzada de Polipropileno + ABS, pieza extraordinariamente sólida, que permite además ampliar el tamaño de las aberturas, lo que supone un notable aumento de la entrada de aire que refrigera la frente y zonas temporales de la cabeza”. Esta estructura de construcción permite por lo tanto lograr un modelo muy compacto y sólido, además de ligero y ventilado.

En todo caso, se trató de trabajar aún más en la seguridad del casco, gracias al uso de la tecnología CONEHEAD, sistema de inyección del EPS que permite la integración de dos diferentes densidades de la espuma protectora. La capa externa, más densa, soporta el impacto directo. La capa interna, más blanda y en contacto con la cabeza, ayuda a amortiguar el golpe de ésta contra las paredes del casco.

En el corazón del tejido eVent® tenemos una película de ePTFE repelente al agua y a los aceites corporales.

La clave de su extraordinario funcionamiento es su estructura de poro abierto. El agua no puede entrar desde el exterior, pero sí permite la ventilación del vapor de la humedad directamente hacia el exterior a través de orificios microscópicos.

Con el sistema eVent® el vapor de humedad producida no está obligado a condensarse en forma de líquido para escapar de la membrana. En cambio, permite la ventilación sin hacer primero el interior de la prenda húmeda y pegajosa. Es lo que denominamos un “sistema seco”.

Esto permite un método único de transpirabilidad que proporciona una ventaja enorme y altamente eficaz en términos de comodidad para el usuario.

At the core of eVent® Fabric is an ePTFE film that has been rendered oil-repellant, and thereby free from body-oil contamination.

The key to eVent® fabric’s unprecedented performance is its truly open-pore structure. Water from the outside cannot enter, but perspiration vapour from the inside can escape through the membrane’s microscopic “nano” vents.

With eVent® system the moisture vapour you produce is not required to condense into liquid to escape the fabric. Instead, it is allowed to vent directly to the outside without first making the inside of the garment damp and clammy. Finally… a Dry System!

This allows for a unique method of breathability that provides a huge and highly noticeable comfort advantage for the user.

AIR CONCEPT: SENSATION OF FREEDOMBesides biomechanics, power, weight, speed, and so forth, cycling is made of pure sensations. Sensations that made the source of inspiration for the R&D team at Spiuk when they developed the new Elite range for the summer 2015.

In the words of the Head of the Spiuk Textile Development Department, Rafa Sánchez: ‘The secret is that they’re comfortable. Our goal is to make clothes that you don’t even notice you’re wearing. It’s like feeling the air around you.’ The starting point was to develop clothes that made you enjoy your ride, feel your body and nothing else. This is what Spiuk’s Air Concept is all about: cycling wear that boasts the best combination of breathability, lightness and comfort.

The Elite Jersey for the summer of 2015 is made from the exclusive SensoDry Fresh Plus fabric by Spiuk, which helps improve the cyclist’s performance, keeping him or her cool even on the hottest of days. This ultralight multifilament fabric is really soft and comfortable. Additionally, its panels provide good capillary action to quickly wick sweat away from the skin.

The Elite bib shorts use an innovative woven fabric that takes more filaments per inch while weighing only 110g/m2, way below the average. This provides ‘a balance between weight and breathability, plus perfect fit.’

The R&D team at Spiuk believe that Air Concept ‘posed a challenge but we’ve been able to achieve our goal. It’s a fact. Sensations and technology can go hand in hand.’ The outcome, the new Elite Summer 2015 range.

AIR CONCEPT: SENSACIÓN DE LIBERTADEl ciclismo, además de por variables biomecánicas, vatios, peso, velocidad, etc se guía por puras sensaciones. Estas sensaciones son la base sobre la que se ha inspirado el equipo de I+D de Spiuk a la hora de desarrollar la nueva línea Elite para verano 2015.

En palabras de Rafa Sánchez Jefe del Dpto. de Desarrollo Textil en Spiuk:

“La clave es la comodidad de uso. El objetivo es crear prendas que consigan hacerte olvidar que las llevas puestas; sentir el aire a tu alrededor”. El punto de partida ha sido desarrollar prendas que permitan al ciclista disfrutar del pedaleo “sintiendo” únicamente a su propio cuerpo.

Eso es el Air Concept de Spiuk: prendas que aúnan la máxima transpirabilidad, ligereza y confort.

El maillot Elite Verano 2015, fabricado con el exclusivo tejido Sensodry Fresh Plus de Spiuk, ayuda al mayor rendimiento posible del ciclista

combatiendo las altas temperaturas. Este tejido superligero y multifilamento de gran suavidad y confort de uso, así como su estructura de paneles permite una excelente capilaridad, por lo que se acelera la evacuación de la humedad.

En el culotte Elite se ha empleado un novedoso

tejido fabricado con la técnica woven que permite un porcentaje mayor de filamentos por pulgada y con un peso de tan solo 110gr/m2, muy por debajo de la media. Ello “supone un equilibrio entre peso y transpirabilidad además de un perfecto ajuste”.

AThLETES AS MAChINES CAPABLE OF BEINg OPTIMISED The long research work carried out by the R&D Department at Spiuk to develop tools that help improve the cyclist’s performance has finally borne fruit – the Biomechanic Concept from Spiuk.

‘Technical clothing should help cyclists develop their whole potential, minimising the adverse effects of the environment, such as air resistance or temperature. With the Biomechanic Concept we wanted to take one step further. We wanted to enhance the athlete’s performance, optimising mechanics and power-related techniques,’ explain the engineers at the R&D Department. It’s a concept similar to those developed by the engineers who try to increase the efficiency of a machine.

The new Team Summer 2015 range uses this concept to give athletes a tool that can help them achieve better results ‘optimising the resources their own body makes available to them.’

Efficient Stance is a good example of the technology developed on the basis of the Biomechanic Concept by Spiuk, applied to the Team Summer 2015 jersey: ‘The mesh fabric offers compression in multiple directions, specially on the trapezius muscles in the back, forcing the user to take an upright position on the bike. This way, the cyclist breathes more deeply while riding, increasing their oxygen intake.’ This results in improved resistance and lower fatigue - in sum, in better performance.

Progressive Compression is another technology developed out of the Biomechanic Concept by Spiuk. It is a system we apply to the Team bib pants, based on ‘compression fabrics, with three different levels of compression, adjusted to the needs of the leg muscles that are key during physical exercise. This gradual compression system gently squeezes the legs to facilitate venous return and optimise the supply of oxygen to the muscles.’ This favours fast recovery, delayed fatigue and more efficient performance on the bike.

Athletes as machines capable of being optimised: an idea based on the Biomechanic Concept by Spiuk that is realised in a clothing range aimed at improving the cyclist’s performance.

EL DEPORTISTA COMO uNA MáquINA OPTIMIzABLE El prolongado trabajo de investigación llevado a cabo por el departamento de I+D de Spiuk, con objeto de desarrollar herramientas que mejoren los resultados físicos del ciclista, ha dado como resultado el Biomechanic Concept de Spiuk. Los ingenieros del departamento de I+D de Spiuk, explican que “las prendas técnicas por norma deben permitir al ciclista desarrollar todo su potencial, minimizando los efectos adversos del entorno como puede ser la resistencia del aire o la temperatura. Sin embargo, con el planteamiento Biomechanic Concept queríamos ir más allá, buscamos aumentar el rendimiento del deportista optimizando técnicas mecánicas y energéticas”. Se trata de un planteamiento similar al que llevan a cabo los ingenieros cuando intentan mejorar la eficiencia de las máquinas.

La nueva línea Team Summer 2015 ha adaptado el estudio y aplicación de estos preceptos para poner en manos del atleta una herramienta que le permite conseguir resultados físicos superiores “optimizando los recursos proporcionados por su propio cuerpo”. Efficient Stance es un claro ejemplo de tecnología desarrollada a partir de la idea Biomechanic Concept de Spiuk y aplicado en el maillot Team

Summer 2015: “su tejido de compresión multidireccional en red, busca una compresión dirigida a los músculos trapezoidales de la espalda, forzando en cierta medida al deportista a adoptar una postura más erguida sobre la bicicleta. De este modo el ciclista realiza respiraciones más profundas durante el

ejercicio aumentando el volumen de entrada del oxígeno”. Esto se traduce en una mejora de la resistencia y disminución de la fatiga, logrando un rendimiento más eficiente durante el ejercicio. La tecnología Progressive Compression también ha sido desarrollada a partir de los principios del Biomechanic Concept de Spiuk. Se trata de un sistema aplicado al culotte Team basado en “tejidos de compresión, con 3 niveles de

intensidad diferentes, y adaptados a las necesidades de cada uno de los músculos clave durante el ejercicio en piernas. Este sistema de compresión gradual facilita el retorno venoso logrando una óptima reoxigenación muscular”. De este modo se favorece la recuperación logrando retrasar la fatiga, y permite un rendimiento más eficiente sobre la bicicleta. Entender el deportista como una máquina. Una idea desarrollada dentro del Biomechanic Concept de Spiuk y que da como resultado una línea textil que busca mejorar el rendimiento del ciclista.

CONCEPT&DEVELOPMENT

ELITE vests have been designed bearing the muscle structure of the human body in mind. Through the study of various muscle groups and of the way each one of them work while performing different sporting activities, we have identified certain data which has given us the keys for the creation of these new garments.

ADVANTAGES

Among their most outstanding qualities it is worth highlighting that these garments are SEAMLESS (to avoid rubbing) and produced using the JACQUARD SYSTEM. This system allows us to use the most suitable fabric’s stitching and tension to maximize the specific function of each area.The aim is to provide a highly technical tool for those sportsmen and sportswomen looking to get the greatest performance from their effort.

COMPRESSION

In certain areas like: forearms and cuffs, abdomen, hips, etc. muscle vibrations are minimized. In addition, heat loss is avoided and the inner microclimate created between the skin and the garment is maintained.

VENTILATION

In the body areas where most heat energy is produced, the optimum working temperature (37º C) must be maintained. To achieve this, the fabric structure is lightened facilitating the movement of warm air towards the outside of the garment.

THERMOREGULATION

By creating the inner microclimate, we avoid body overheating. Trapping the heat generated by the body and distributing it towards the areas where it is most needed, the energy generated to “cool” us down is optimised and muscle power is therefore increased.

PERSPIRATION

One of the key functions of any underwear garment is to keep the skin as dry as possible. The areas dedicated to the evacuation of moisture: armpits, lower back and arm folds are given high capillarity. This means that they capture moisture from perspiration and break it up, spreading it throughout the fabric. As a result, and thanks to the heat generated by the body itself, this moisture is pushed away to the outer layer of the fabric, achieving quick dispersion and drying.

ELASTICITY AND FIT

Thanks to the high elasticity provided by Lycra to this clothing system in both directions, the garment becomes a second skin allowing complete freedom of movement. Also, as the garment is fitted throughout the body, the warm air generated by our body is trapped and is prevented from being expelled outside.
