PARISH NEWS

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday during Lent, Stations of the Cross will be conducted after the 12 Noon Mass fol-lowed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. The Teen Club will conduct the Liv-ing Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 3rd Friday, April 10th at 8:00 PM in the Church.

ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older.

FASTING Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are per-mitted as necessary to maintain strength accord-ing to one’s needs, but eating solid food be-tween meals is not permitted. There is a serious obligation to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause of excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and absti-nence. During Lent, the Church encourages at-tendance at daily Mass, self-imposed time of fasting and generosity to local, national and worldwide programs of sharing.

10 Innovative Things to Consider Giving Up For Lent

1. Vending machines of any kind: snacks, soda

or even lottery tickets 2. Using the word “I”: would certainly force

you to say and think about things from a dif-ferent perspective

3. Plastic bags: Take your own re-usable bags to the store with you

4. Offering constructive criticism: Only offer complements

5. Throwing away plastic baggies: find at least one or two other uses after the initial use to make the product last longer.

6. Pie: Don’t give up all sweets and set yourself up for failure; just pick one and stay true to your commitment.

7. Name calling: Stop being judgmental by call-ing others “lazy”, “evil”, “scary” or “weird”.

8. Excess shopping: During Lent only buy items that are essentials to you and your household. Buy for “need”, not “want”.

9. Blame: During Lent you will not blame any-thing on anyone- take responsibility where needed and let the rest go.

10. Internet: Outside of work requirements and paying bills, unplug yourself from the infor-mation superhighway. Your emails, jokes, recipes and games will still be there in forty days. Replace that time with prayer, maybe say the rosary.

So what will you give up for Lent? Whatever you choose, remember that Christ made the ulti-mate sacrifice for you; therefore make your sac-rifice a noble one for Him.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

GETTING THE “READ” ON THE BIBLE… Every few weeks or so I have to conduct a little business at the bank up on New Dorp Lane. Yes, I know that they have machines that can now take ten checks or more for deposit (not that I have that many) but I still prefer to go to the teller. Several months ago, a very nice lady teller helped with my transactions and then told me she was a member of a local parish. She went on to say that her kids were altar servers and that she was herself a lector at the church. She mentioned to me that at times in looking over the readings for Mass there were some things that were quite puzzling. I agreed with her, took my cash and forgot all about the encounter. Then just last week when I was up at the bank, this same woman after cashing my check, said, “And now Father I have a religious question for you about this week’s Sunday Mass reading.” At this point I had to make a confession (priests do confess) - I had not looked over the Sunday read-ings yet - and this was late Friday afternoon! So this bank teller was way ahead of me. In any event, the question that she had concerned the Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians and in particular, this passage: “For the spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.” The lady’s question was, “If the Holy Spirit is God why would he then examine God Himself?” It was a very good question which I tried to answer even though I had not done my “homework.” Yes, the Holy Spirit is a distinct person from God the Father and God the Son. The Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. We can say that the Holy Spirit has a thorough knowledge of the hidden counsels and purposes of God. He reveals to us the greatness of God and His love. She seemed satisfied with that answer but certainly the question was not one that I was not expecting at the bank counter! This experience made me think about the fact that at Mass on Sunday we should really listen to the bible readings. The first part of the Mass is called “The Liturgy of the Word.” We usually have a reading from the Old Testament, the Responsorial Psalm, an Epistle of Saint Paul and then a passage from the Holy Gospel. So there is “a lot” of scripture at Mass for us to think about. But first we have to listen. So many of us are on automatic pilot when we come to Mass! Did you ever hear about the lector who got up at Sunday Mass and proclaimed, “This is a Letter from Saint Paul to the Filipi-nos.” I can assure that Saint Paul never got to the Philippine Islands! Besides the readings at Mass, a good practice for us during this Lent is to take a passage from the bible and read it every day prayerfully. The Church grants a plenary indulgence for those who read the sacred scripture for at least thirty minutes provided the other conditions are met. The bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and thus God speaks to us in a very special way when we read his word. The great scholar Saint Jerome once said this: “Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Jesus Christ.” We want to come to know Christ better and his teachings. The best way to do that is to get off “Face Book” and to get into the “Faith Book” which is the bible. If we do that we can certainly get “the read” on God’s holy word and let it change our lives! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
