CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN:
CONGRATULATIONS TO ST. THERESA’S CLASS OF 2015
We are happy to congratulate the latest graduates in the fifty-five years of St. Theresa’s School. This past Friday they joined a long
line of priests, business people, doctors, nurses and most of all mothers and fathers who have attended our beautiful school and have
received there the foundation for their future lives as Catholics and as citizens of our country.
How quickly the years of these graduates here in our school have gone by! Some of them started here in the Three-Year Old Class,
some in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, some in later years. How proud we are of them as they move on to high school and to their
future.
What do they take with them from St. Theresa’s? First, I hope they take and remember the confidence that so many people have put
in them-parents and grandparents who have sacrificed so much to have them in our school; their principal, Mrs. Fanelli, for her love for
each one of them; their teachers and their priests, especially Father Grippo, who have helped them during these years of growth. Please
God, they take with them great thanks for all they have received here and the determination to live up to what we all expect them to be.
Second, I hope they take with them the awareness that they are precious in the eyes of God. May they not let anything get in the way
of their becoming the persons God wants them to be. May they remember how much God expects from them and may they never
disappoint Him.
Third, I trust that they take with them a deep and abiding love for St. Theresa’s Church and School. Wherever they go, they always
belong here. St. Theresa’s is where their life began. May they never forget the values that St. Theresa’s has taught them. The years
ahead will bring them in many directions, to new places and new adventures in life. But St. Theresa’s will always be the anchor that
steadies them in all the years that are ahead.
And finally they take with them the love of our dear Father Grippo, Father Grippo baptized many of them, gave them First Holy
Communion, joined in their Confirmation and in all the other big moments of their lives. I know that our graduates will never forget
him and will never stop thanking God for him.
So many young men and women have come through our school. The past fifty-five years have seen so many move on to the next
phase of their lives. May our latest graduates always remember that this is their “house.” We look forward to welcoming them back here, to church, to our various activities, to all the things that are part of St. Theresa’s. May God bless the Class of 2015!

JUNE 15
ST. MARGUERITE d’YOUVILLE
(1701-1771)
We learn compassion from allowing our lives to be influenced by
compassionate people, by seeing life from their perspective and
reconsidering our own values.
Born in Varennes, Canada, Marie Marguerite DuFrost de
Lajemmerais had to interrupt her schooling at the age of 12 to
help her widowed mother. Eight years later she married
Francois d’Youville; they had six children, four of whom died
young. Despite the fact that her husband gambled, sold liquor
illegally to Native Americans and treated her indifferently, she
cared for him compassionately before his death in 1730.
Even though she was caring for two small children and running a
store to help pay off her husband’s debts, Marguerite still helped
the poor. Once her children were grown, she and several com-
panions rescued a Quebec hospital that was in danger of failing.
She called her community the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal; the people called them the “Grey Nuns” because of the
color of their habit. In time, a proverb arose among the poor
people of Montreal, “Go to the Grey Nuns; they never refuse to
serve.” In time, five other religious communities traced their
roots to the Grey Nuns.
The General Hospital in Montreal became known as the Hotel Dieu (House of God) and set a standard for medical care and
Christian compassion. When the hospital was destroyed by fire
in 1766, she knelt in the ashes, led the Te Deum (hymn to God’s
providence in all circumstances) and began the rebuilding
process. She fought the attempts of government officials to
restrain her charity and established the first foundling home in North America. Saint John XXIII, who beatified her in 1959,
called her the “Mother of Universal Charity.” She was canonized
in 1990.
Saints deal with plenty of discouragement, plenty of reasons to
say, “Life isn’t fair” and wonder where God is in the rubble of
their lives. We honor saints like Marguerite because they show us
that, with God’s grace and their cooperation, suffering can lead to
compassion rather than to bitterness.
QUOTE: “More than once the work which Marguerite undertook
was hindered by nature or people. In order to work to bring that
new world of justice and love closer, she had to fight some hard
and difficult battles.” (Pope John Paul II, canonization homily).
Matt can be considered the patron of men and women struggling
with alcoholism.
Matt was born in Dublin, where his father worked on the docks
and had a difficult time supporting his family. After a few years
of schooling, Matt obtained work as a messenger for some liquor
merchants; there he began to drink excessively.
For 15 years-until he was almost 30-Matt was an active alcoholic.
One day he decided to take “the pledge” for three months, make a
general confession and begin to attend daily Mass. There is
evidence that Matt’s first seven years after taking the pledge
were especially difficult. Avoiding his former drinking places
was hard. He began to pray as intensely as he used to drink. He
also tried to pay back people from whom he had borrowed or
stolen money while he was drinking.
Most of his life Matt worked as a builder’s laborer. He joined the
Secular Franciscan Order and began a life of strict penance; he
abstained from meat nine months a year. Matt spent hours every
night avidly reading Scripture and the lives of the saints. He
prayed the rosary conscientiously. Though his job did not make
him rich, Matt contributed generously to the missions.
After 1923 his health failed, and Matt was forced to quit work.
He died on his way to church on Trinity Sunday. Fifty years later
Pope Paul VI gave him the title venerable.
In looking at the life Matt Talbot, we may easily focus on the later
years when he had stopped drinking for some time and was leading a penitential life. Only alcoholic men and women who
have stopped drinking can fully appreciate how difficult the
earliest years of sobriety were for Matt.
He had to take one day at a time. So do the rest of us.
Quote: On an otherwise blank page in one of Matt’s books, the
following is written: “God console thee and make thee a saint. To arrive at the perfection of humility four things are necessary:
to despise the world, to despise no one, to despise self, to despise
being despised by others.”
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

our parish this weekend and we ask your generous help in today’s
second collection for the missions.

2015 ST. THERESA FEAST
Plans are underway for our 19th Annual Summer Festival, 19 years of Faith, Family & Fun celebrated in the streets around our church. This year it will be held from July 22nd to the 26th. So tell your family and friends to save the date and make plans for a fun-filled celebration. CONFIRMATION GRANTS - Each and every year the Feast Committee provides monetary awards to some very special 7th grade students of our Parish. This year the recipients are Daniela Muccio, Antonia Paturzo, and Vincent Bufano. We recognize these young parishioners who during the performance of their Confirmation service hours best exemplified the spirit of the heart of our parish and its many volunteers. Congratulations to these dedicated young people. We can all learn from their efforts. RELIGIOUS SERVICES - Final details of our procession route and religious observance schedule are still being worked on. Each night we will have opening prayers and a Mass celebrated for a special intention. We will also have a concert in the Church immediately following the Sunday procession. A complete schedule and the procession route will be posted a future edition of this bulletin. VOLUNTEERS-Our Feast has been successful in the past because of the help and support of many of our parishioners who volunteer their time and services. This year will be no different. We can really use your help and fellowship. We hope that you will join us as a volunteer this year. As our feast continues to grow, and as we try to initiate new features, we are in need of more and more volunteers and the ideas that they bring with them. If you volunteered in the past we thank you for your efforts and hope that you will be able to help us this year. If you have not helped in the past please “give us a try” this year. Whatever amount of time you can give will be greatly appreciated. Fellow parishioners will be outside of Church before and after all of the weekend Masses. Stop by to see how you can help. It takes all of us working together to keep our parish the spiritual center of our community. THIS YEAR’S THEME-Each year since the inception of the feast we have had a catchphrase that is the underlying theme of that year’s feast. The catchphrase is seen on the t-shirts of the volunteers and is the theme around which the religious observances are based. We have chosen as our theme this year “Welcome”.” It is our way of reminding us that as Catholics our doors are open to all. Raffle-As part of our feast we will once again hold our Grand Raffle.
Grand Prize-2015 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 or $30,000.00
2nd Prize-Seven Night Cruise for Two out of New York or $1,500.00
3rd Prize-$500.00
There will only be 1000 tickets sold at a cost of $100.00 each. Once again we ask for your help. This raffle is very important to the fi-nances of our parish. If you cannot buy them yourself please make every effort to network them among friends, relatives or co-workers. Take the raffle tickets to your place of employment or a family gathering and ask a number of people to share in the $100.00 cost of a ticket and ultimately share the $30,000.00 grand prize. For those of you that are not on our mailing list you can pick up a ticket or two in front of the church today. If your ticket stubs are in before June 29th you qualify for the early bird drawing. The winner of the early bird will receive $300.00 and 3 additional free tickets for the Grand Raffle. Raffle tickets are also available on the parish web-site. Just click on the Feast link. Please do your best to network at least one raffle ticket. We all know that if we try we can get it done. CORPORATE SPONSORS-There is a program associated with our feast where businesses can get involved and help as well. It’s called our Corporate Sponsor Program. A tax deductible donation will get a business or store advertising and recognition during our feast. For additional information call the rectory weekdays at 718-892-1900. The following companies have already signed-up as Corporate Sponsors. We thank them for their generosity and ask you, our parishioners, to also thank them when you frequent their establishments.
Colonial Home Improvements - Mercedes Benz of New Rochelle - Life Line Ambulance
Electric Paradise - Pelham Bay Dental Assoc. - Lucca Restaurant - Prime Realty
L & L Home Appliance Service - Dr. Ralph Capalbo - Rainbow Palace Daycare - Weiss Realty
Dermatology & Surgery Assoc. - Barino’s Market - Ridgewood Savings Bank - Zeppieri & Sons Bakery
KNITTERS & CROCHETERS-Once again we are reaching out to those that can knit or crochet. We are asking for baby blankets, sweaters, hats or booties for babies. These items will be displayed during our feast and then donated to the “Premature Baby Unit” at Jacobi Medical Center and other local hospitals. These items can be dropped off at the rectory during the week and at the raffle table in front of the church before or after the weekend masses. ADVANCE RIDE TICKETS-We are now selling ride tickets for our feast in advance at a tremendous discount. You are able to save 50% over the cost of buying the tickets at the feast. These Advance Ride Tickets are available in the bookstore after the weekend masses, and in the rectory weekdays from 9:00am to 4:30pm, and on the parish web-site (using a credit or debit card) at www.sttheresachurchbronx.org until July 21st. Just click on the Feast link. LOCAL RESIDENTS - We ask all of our parishioners to join us and say thank you to those individuals that own homes or live within the immediate area of our feast. We realize that at times during the week of our feast those local residents are inconvenienced. We thank them for their understanding and patience. Many of them have told us that these inconveniences are greatly outweighed by the good that our feast does for our parish and community. We ask these homeowners to contact the rectory if they feel that there is a condition that needs to be addressed.
For more information on our feast please check our web site at www.sttheresachurchbronx.org just click on The Feast link. If you would like to find out about being a vendor e-mail Lou at [email protected].
JUNE, MONTH OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS:
The Church invites us particularly during the month of June to pay special honor to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, that heart that is wounded by our sins, but is always open in love for all of us. On the hill of Calvary, when Our Lord died for us, after His death the Roman soldier pierced His side with his lance. From outward appearances, this seemed just to show that Our Lord was dead. But the Church has always seen a deeper meaning. St. John tells us that from the pierced side of Jesus came blood and water, water symbolizing Baptism and blood symbolizing the Holy Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ. Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as we know it, began about the year 1672. On repeated occasions, Jesus appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun, in France, and during these apparitions He explained to her the devotion to His Sacred Heart as He wanted people to practice it. He asked to be honored in the symbol of His Heart of flesh; he asked for acts of reparation, for frequent Communion, Communion on the First Friday of the month, and the keeping of a Holy Hour. St. Margaret Mary wrote this, “He showed me that it was His great desire of being loved by men and women that made Him form the design of manifesting His Heart to men and women with all the treasures of love, of mercy, of grace, of sanctification and salvation which it contains, in order that those who desire to render Him and procure for Him all the honor and love possible, might themselves be abundantly enriched with those divine treasures of which this Heart is the source. He should be honored under the figure of this Heart of flesh, and its image should be exposed...He promised me that wherever this image should be exposed with a view to showing it special honor, He would pour forth His blessings and graces. This devotion is so pleasing to Him that He can refuse nothing to those who practice it.” It is good to have the image of the Sacred Heart displayed in our homes. It is likewise good to join in the Novena and Litany to the Sacred Heart as we do every Thursday in our church after the 12:00pm Mass. But most of all it is good for all of us simply to remember the Heart of Jesus, that Heart which represents His abiding love for all of us His people. “Jesus meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like yours. Amen”
St. Theresa’s Home School Association hosted a breakfast for our 8th grade graduates after the Graduation Mass. All who attended had a wonderful time.
THE PROMISES MADE BY
THE LORD TO ST. MARGARET MARY
The Lord Jesus promised that, in response to those who consecrate themselves and make reparations to His Sacred Heart: He will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life. He will establish peace in their homes. He will comfort them in all their afflictions. He will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death. He will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings. Sinners will find in His Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. Lukewarm souls shall become fervent. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection. He will bless every place in which an image of His Heart is exposed and honored. He will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in His Heart. In the excessive mercy of His Heart, His all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in His disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. His divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. The devotions attached to these promises are: Receiving communion frequently Going to confession and receiving the Eucharist on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months. Holy Hour: Eucharistic Adoration for one hour on Thursdays. (“could you not watch one hour with me?”) Holy Hour can be made alone or as part of a group with formal prayers.
