MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to connecting with local arts organizations and community businesses to create diverse opportunities.

OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gift shop, summer art camp for children, art parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more. Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Department and has been part of Columbia Association for 30 years. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

Help us engage the community and reimagine Long Reach Village Center through a day of visual, literary and performing arts.

The one day event is sponsored by Howard County Arts Council, Howard County Government, Columbia Festival of the Arts, Long Reach Community Association, Columbia Association and Columbia Art Center. Enjoy art demonstrations, interactive activities, music and dance performances, good food and lots more.

Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold fun team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. These art workshops can be held seven days a week, based on availability. Columbia Art Center provides the canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons for your entire team. You are welcome to bring refreshments or catering for your event.

Team-Building Painting ActivitiesIndividual Paintings: Each participant paints and personalizes their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction.

One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step.

Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large, 3 foot by 4 foot painting. One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying on the office wall and for use as a conversation piece.

Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step by step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

NSchool’s Out Program for grades 1-8 When Howard County public schools are out, come to Columbia Art Center for an amazing day of creative fun and go home with cool art projects. Bring a friend and make new friends. Bring a lunch and enjoy a fun day of art. Children will be served a snack and beverage after 3:30pm. The program lessons will be available to view a month before each date. Registration is open until the day before the School’s Out date. MOMMY AND ME ART PLAY For adult and child ages 2-5 With Laura Easter Drop-in format returns! Together, parents and toddlers will explore colors, shapes and textures using various age-appropriate tools and art supplies. Each class explores a new theme and experience for your child. Learn to mix colors, make new colors with various paint combinations and create fun art projects with textures. Each class will include a brief story time to give children the opportunity to learn how their masterpieces connect to the real world.

HOMESCHOOL ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM FOR HOMESCHOOLERS For ages 5-8 With Emily Yeagley Designed for individuals and groups. Learn about general subjects through a visual lens and hands-on art exploration. This art integration class will allow you to develop artistic skills and techniques while learning age-appropriate basics in subjects such as language, mathematics, history, science and health. An in-depth exploration of individual subjects will happen in the following sessions. Provide your child with a new way of studying a subject while they have fun creating art.

A fun and relaxing atmosphere to learn fun, basic techniques of handbuilding (coil, pinch, slab) and express individuality and creativity. FROM REALISM TO ABSTRACT AND BACK For ages 8-13 With Alina Poroshina During this workshop, students will learn about modernist masters that bridged the gap between realism and abstraction through their vivid art. By focusing on the fundamentals of color, shape and composition, students will create drawings, paintings and collages.

DRAWING SERIES 102: ALL DRAWING MEDIUM For ages 9-12 With Alina Poroshina Continuing students are encouraged in this class! Children love to draw and they do so freely and with great joy. Pre-adolescents reach a point where they want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. To do this, they must learn to see with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way. They will concentrate on a variety of drawing types — still life, landscape and portraiture — while working with a diverse spectrum of media like graphite, charcoal, chalk pastels and color pencil. Each term expands the artistic horizon of the children, whether they are new to art or repeating the class.

Unless otherwise noted, supplies are included in the cost of tuition for youth classes. Because Columbia Art Center wants students to focus on the activity and not worry about getting messy, it is recommended that they wear old clothes or bring a smock for all activities.

YOUTH ARTISTIC MASTER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Youth Artistic Masters Certificate Program offers students the chance to focus on their studies as they hone their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, these classes and workshops will work to expand participants’ skill levels and stretch their creativity while building confidence and artistic sensibility.

Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who took or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center during the Fall 2015 class session, Winter 2016 class session or Spring 2016 class session.

Program Description: Students are asked to complete four classes which will enable them to receive a Level 1 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 25 percent discount on a future class or workshop.

Participants who complete eight classes will receive a Level 2 Certificate that includes a free portfolio review and 50 percent discount on a future class or workshop. Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a free class.

Register for free for the Youth Artistic Master Certificate Program when you sign up and pay for your first class. Classes taken during the Fall 2015, Winter 2016, and Spring 2016 sessions can apply to the Certificate Program.

SUPER SUNDAY ART WORKSHOPSNew! Bring a friend, because on every third Sunday of the month Columbia Art Center will offer a unique creative workshop. Classes require at least four students to run; advanced registration is required. Additional students may join on a drop-in basis if a class is running — please call to confirm.

CUT PAPER SHADOW BOXES: INSPIRED BY NATURE For ages 9-14 Create your very own shadow box. Students will use cut paper to assemble a nature-themed shadow box. Students will learn how to layer cut paper to add depth and dimension to their pieces. Colored pencils for details and found objects also can be used.

STYROFOAM PRINTING For ages 6-9 Create your own designs to press on paper. Students will create line designs in Styrofoam, roll on ink and press on paper. They will learn the basic steps to creating a print and use their imaginations to create fun designs.

LEO LIONNI INSPIRED COLLAGE For ages 5-7 Come get colorful, creative and a bit messy. Become familiar with Leo Lionni’s collage technique after reading his books, A Color Of His Own and Pezzettino. Experiment by mixing paint colors, paper and found objects to make our own Lionni-inspired collage.

COMIC WORKSHOP FOR TWEENS AND TEENS For ages 9-14 With Adam Goode Create amazing comics! Learn character development skills by brainstorming character traits, symbols, powers and motivations. Character sheets, sequential art (graphic novel, manga, or animation keyframes) and story development will be explored.

LAYING OUT COMICS WITH MANGA STUDIO PRO For ages 9-14 With Adam Goode Learn how to take your brilliant idea from sketch to screen with Manga Studio Pro. You will learn how to develop a script, scan sketches into workable images, and then place them into panels complete with text boxes and dialogue. You will leave this class with a completed printable project. Supply list will be provided at the time of registration.

OBSERVATIONAL PAINTING For ages 10-14 With Alina Poroshina Take a blank canvas and fill it with a still life or landscape. Using acrylic paints, students will work at the easel learning about color, perspective and realistic rendering as they build a painting step-by-step. All skill levels are welcome. This class covers sketching, shapes, composition, color mixing, brush strokes, light and dark. Supply list will be provided at the time of registration.

ECO-FRIENDLY PUPPET POWER For ages 10-17 With Adam Goode New! This fun, participatory and collaborative work-shop allows you to create your own puppet and bring a character to life. DRAWING SERIES 201: DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION For ages 11-14 With Liron Fisch Build your portfolio! Learn technical drawing skills to assist you in observational drawing. Foundations such as light, shadow, line and composition will be the focus of the class and drawings will be developed by carefully observing still life subject matters under light sources. You will use various charcoals in this class and be provided with a supply list at the time of registration. Continuing students encouraged to take this class.

DRAWING SERIES 301: EXTREMITIES AND PORTRAITS For ages 10-17 With Alina Poroshina You will be guided through creating anatomically correct, realistic and expressive depictions of the hands, feet and face. Gain an understanding of proportion and foreshort-ening, and become comfortable rendering drawings using graphite, pencil, charcoal and pastel on heavyweight paper. In addition to drawing technique, you will learn to create compositions with meaning and narrative.

TEEN WHEEL THROWING For ages 12-17 With Joe Vitek For both beginners and those with some clay experience. This class is designed for students who wish to learn the fun-damental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some hand-building. Learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls, plates and other forms according to ability and desire. Clay, glazes, use of tools and firings are included in tuition.

THE ART OF FASHION, MODELING AND MAGAZINE PUBLISHING For ages 11-17 With Marlene Jackson New! This workshop is designed to empower aspiring writers, editors, photographers, illustrators, graphic artists, models, fashion designers, makeup artists and hair stylists. Through fun and educational projects, learn how to creatively write, edit, graphically design, lay out and produce a fashion, beauty and lifestyle publication. You will come away from the workshop with a self- published group fashion magazine.

CALLIGRAPHYCALLIGRAPHY SAMPLING WORKSHOP With Sandy Olson Have you ever wanted to try your hand at calligraphy? This sampling workshop is for you. Learn various lettering techniques while watching demonstrations by recognized calligraphy artist Sandy Olson. Try several fun, hands-on exercises. All supplies provided. Bring a friend and enjoy a fun morning art activity together.

CERAMICS NOTE: All spring 2016 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please.

CERAMICS SAMPLINGWORKSHOPSGIVE IT A SPIN With Joe Vitek Have you always wanted to try your hand at the potter’s wheel? Then this wheel throwing workshop is for you. Learn methods for centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. Enjoy learning how to decorate finished pieces using commercial underglazes. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. This workshop provides a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends.

Class Policies & ProceduresINCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due

to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth

classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes,

please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association

assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must

pay the “Nonresident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied

to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of

a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most

classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional

information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves

the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a

class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after

the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any

questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before

the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class

disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive

behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves

the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for

inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Admission is open to everyone. Advanced registration is required and early enrollment is advised to reserve a space in each class and to avoid possible cancellation. A class will be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met three days prior to the class beginning. Several classes have prerequisites. Please read course descriptions carefully.

PAYMENT Full payment must accompany the registration form and is required to hold your space in class. Registration andpayment may be done in person, by mail or over the phone. Tuition can be paid by check or credit card (Mastercard, Visa andAmerican Express accepted). Please make check payable to Columbia Art Center.
