The supporting program of the world’s leading trade fair LASER World of PHOTONICS distinguishes itself through its consistent practice orientation and received 95% positive visitor ratings in 2019. In focus: The entire spectrum of laser systems for production engineering. The application level has been a core competency of the world’s leading photonics trade fair since its first event in 1973, which has evolved into the largest event for this topic area worldwide.

Looking back: The 2019 special show “Photons in Production”—in cooperation with the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management at the Technical University of Munich (iwb), the Bavarian Laser Center in Erlangen (blz) and the Institute of Photonics Technologies at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (LPT)—had the slogan “Smart Photonics.” It featured application examples, live demonstrations and technical lectures on the following topics:

Welding depth measurement through in-situ process monitoring Laser beam welding with blue light Interactive examination of absorption characteristics Joining plastics with metals Measuring surface profiles of laser-structured components Manufacturing battery cells Additive manufacturing Laser protection

Exhibitors present customer-specific manufacturing solutions to their visitors in themed tours—guided by specialists from well-established research institutions—to expand their target audience.

Application PanelsExperts present the latest application sectors for the tool of light in practical Application Panels. In 2019, these presentations saw some 2,050 attendees learning about the latest industrial applications, challenges and solution approaches in photonics.

Congress production focal point:LiM (Lasers in Manufacturing)This application-oriented conference as part of the World of Photonics Congress is organized by WLT—Scientific Society for Laser Technology. It focuses on the latest developments and future trends in the laser materials processing sector.

In 2019, around 550 conference participants attended the LiM lectures.

As the industry’s leading scientific platform, the World of Photonics Congress offers extensive insights into the world of photonics while acting as an interfacebetween theory and practice. For 63% of all exhibitors at the fair, congress participants are an important target group, and 58% stated that they mainly want to address visitors from science and research with their exhibits.
