The Courier continued on page 6..... Six Run for Lincoln County Sheriff e requirements to be elected County Sheriff in the state of Idaho are near- ly nonexistent. You must be 21, a U.S. citizen, reside in the county one year prior to being elected, and pay a $40 filing fee. After being elected you have to attend the “newly elected sheriffs’ school” sponsored by the Idaho sheriffs’ association (IC 34-618). Five years ago there was an effort to change the law to require POST Certifica- tion within one year of be- ing elected Sheriff. Certifi- cation costs - about $8000 - could have been self-paid, or paid by the county after the individual was elected. e justification for this proposal (made by the Ida- ho Sheriff’s Association) was to make sure sheriffs are prepared for the job, a job that not only requires un- derstanding of the law, but the management of finances and officers. e bill died after two tie votes failed to push the mea- sure to the House floor. e general consensus was this issue needed to be a citizen- led effort or a referendum. In two week, the voters of Lincoln County will head to the polls with SIX choices for County Sheriff. Remark- ably, most of the candidates have some police training. Here is a brief look at the Republican Candidates: Rene Rodriguez cur- rently works for the Sho- shone Police Department, and as a part-time deputy for Lincoln County. Along with Advanced Certifica- tion from POST, he has eleven years of experience as a petrol officer/Sergeant, working in the Blaine County jail, and grant man- agement & administration for the Shoshone Police. He strongly believes that Law Enforcement officers need to be regularly seen in the community, not just in a car or...
