Six Run for Lincoln County Sheriff The requirements to beelected County Sheriff inthestateofIdahoarenear-ly nonexistent. You mustbe21,aU.S.citizen,resideinthecountyoneyearpriortobeingelected,andpaya$40filingfee.Afterbeingelectedyouhavetoattendthe“newlyelectedsheriffs’school” sponsored by theIdahosheriffs’association(IC34-618). FiveyearsagotherewasanefforttochangethelawtorequirePOSTCertifica-tionwithinoneyearofbe-ingelectedSheriff.Certifi-cationcosts-about$8000-couldhavebeenself-paid,orpaidbythecountyafter
theindividualwaselected. Thejustificationforthisproposal(madebytheIda-ho Sheriff’s Association)wastomakesuresheriffsarepreparedforthejob,ajobthatnotonlyrequiresun-derstandingofthelaw,butthemanagementoffinancesandofficers. Thebilldiedaftertwotievotesfailedtopushthemea-suretotheHousefloor.Thegeneralconsensuswasthisissueneededtobeacitizen-ledeffortorareferendum. Intwoweek,thevotersofLincolnCountywillheadtothepollswithSIXchoicesforCountySheriff.Remark-ably,mostofthecandidates
havesomepolicetraining. HereisabrieflookattheRepublicanCandidates: Rene Rodriguez cur-rently works for the Sho-shonePoliceDepartment,andasapart-timedeputyforLincolnCounty.Alongwith Advanced Certifica-tion from POST, he haselevenyearsofexperienceasapetrolofficer/Sergeant,working in the BlaineCountyjail,andgrantman-agement&administrationfortheShoshonePolice.HestronglybelievesthatLawEnforcementofficersneedtoberegularlyseeninthecommunity,notjustinacaror...

Thursday, May 5th AlongwiththeGoodingVolunteerGroup,theCam-asCountySeniorandCom-munityCenterinFairfieldwill participating in thisyear’sIdahoGives. Nomatterwhereyoulive,seniorcentersarenotwhatthey used to be. They aredynamic places that offerexercise classes, volunteerheadquarters, local meet-ingplaces,healthclincs,artstudios,andmore. Seniorcentersalsoprovidemeals - some serve lunchthreetimesaweekwhileoth-ersarefulltime.Some(liketheCamasSeniorCenter)servebreakfastfive-days-a-week.Andtheyarenotjustfor“old”people. Maintainingthesetypesof facilities requiresdedi-catedvolunteers,oftentheseniorsthemselves. The Camas Senior andCommunityCenterwouldliketoencourageyoutopar-ticipateinthisyear’sIdahoGives project and suporttheirfundraisingefforts.
