HOLY REDEEMER PARISH ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA

Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

The Gospel Lesson presented to us today builds upon what we have heard and reflected upon over the last two weeks. This story is again, about discipleship. It is not enough to say that we have faith in Jesus, our faith must be made visible for the benefit of others. This passage teaches us that, as disciples, we must have the “style” of Jesus. That is, we must think like Him, see each other as He would, and respond to needs as He has shown us in the Scriptures. The question the doctor poses to Jesus is ours, as well. “What must I do to receive eternal life?” Like us, the doctor believes in God, but has this nagging feeling that there is more that he can do. If he wants to achieve eternal life through his own efforts, he will find it impossible. We inherit the promise of eternal life from Jesus. If we do not exercise or build upon that gift, we may lose it. Jesus directs the doctor to the Word of God. Showing his understanding, the doctor unites two phrases of the Law. “You must love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself” (DT 6:5 and LV 19:18.) Jesus approves the doctor’s ideas and the rest of the story expands the doctor’s understanding. The doctor is correct. What is important for us is that we love God with all of our gifts and talents. However, God comes to us in our neighbors. Usually, this occurs when we least expect it. The neighbor is the revelation of God to me. For this reason, we must love our neighbors will all our hearts, with all our soul, with all our strength and with all our minds. Our answers to the questions, “Who is my neighbor?” and “Who was neighbor to the victim of the bandits?” are truly revealing. The doctor asks starting from himself. Our Lord, on the other hand, asks starting from the needs of others. Loving Father, help us to show our love for others. For all those who feel abandoned, especially for ____. For all those who are sick, hospitalized, or terminally ill, especially for ____. Lord of Life, we trust in your loving care. May your Spirit comfort all those in need with your healing grace. Help us to serve them as You would. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Appalachia Team Thanks You!

The Appalachia Mission team from St. Gregory’s would like to thank everyone who gave food, gift cards, money and prayers in support of their June

trip to the diocese of Preston County, WVA. Your generous giving enabled them to feed their workers and purchase needed supplies for our construction projects. In just four days, their group of 55 adults and teens was able to build a two-bedroom addition on a trailer for a couple who gained custody of five nieces and nephews, build two large decks and wheelchair ramps for an older couple, replace flooring throughout a trailer for a man in a wheelchair, repair and replace a roof on a trailer addition, add handicapped bars to an elderly woman's bathroom, add a porch and steps to a trailer, and replace a railing and ramp that had been torn off by an ambulance. They were blessed to have your help in making their mission trip a success .

FAITH FORMATION NEWS Family Registration Forms for the 2019-2020 CCD year have been mailed out to all active families in our Faith For-mation Program. If you did not receive this mailing, please call the Faith Formation Office at 724-752-1271. Parents must complete a New Student Registration for any child entering the program for the first time as well as the Family Registra-tion Form. Our Diocesan Grouping of Holy Redeemer, St. Gregory (Zelienople) and St. Ferdinand (Cranberry Twp.) are opening up their registration to families within our Grouping. For your convenience, on the Holy Redeemer Family Regis-tration Form, you will find information about the programs available at all three parishes. If you chose a program outside of Holy Redeemer, it is very important that you still complete our Registration Form so we are able to track where our stu-dents are. The Registration Form gives the direct website address for each parish’s Faith Formation page so you may access their forms and obtain necessary program information. It is strongly encouraged that parents who have children enrolled in a Catholic School take the time to fill out a Family Registration Form with that information so we may include

your children in our Faith Formation Database. All forms will be available at the entrances of the church.

Please complete your Registration Forms and return them as soon as possible to the Parish Office either by mail or place them in a sealed envelope marked ‘CCD’ and place it in the Sunday collection basket. Placement in your preferred session day is on a first-received, first-placed basis.

ELEMENTARY CATECHISTS NEEDED: The Parish Elementary Faith Formation Program is in need of catechists for the 2019-2020 year. The Catechetical Ministry is one of the most important and most rewarding of ministries in the Church. If you believe God may be calling you to share and teach the faith to the youth of our parish, please call Laurie at the Faith Formation Office at 724-752-1271. NEED FOR ELEMENTARY CCD CLASSROOM AIDES: Are you a junior high Catholic youth or older (through adult), who loves their faith and believes their vocation may be in the education/special education field? Then maybe you are being called to be a classroom aide in the Parish Elementary CCD Program. If you would like more information about this very special ministry, please call Laurie at the Faith Formation Office. CCD HALL MONITORS: All Faith Formation Programs will be on the second floor of the Holy Redeemer Center (former school) beginning this fall. We are looking for hall monitors for the Elementary programs that are on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We are hoping to get several adults who can be placed on a schedule so that they may only have to volunteer once or twice a month. Ideally, it would be very beneficial if the hall monitors have a background in the medical field (i.e. nurses, pharmacists, doctors, etc). We do have several children in the program with severe allergies and other health concerns. Parents who have children in the elementary CCD program may consider this ministry a wonderful way to serve the Church.
