Flying Start This week saw the conclusion to our Flying Start program for 2020. The program concluded with the presentation of certificates and a picnic party. It has been a pleasure getting to know each of our Kindergarten students for 2021 and to watch their friendships and social confidence develop. We look forward to walking beside them as they begin the next stage of their education journey and are confident that they are ready to fly!

2021 Classes and Teachers

I am very pleased with the educational and social advantages that our class grouping will allow again next year. This arrangement that is not based on enrolment numbers, although made possible by enrolment numbers, will allow the academic and social needs of ALL students to

be best met. A great deal of time and effort, starting right back in Term 2, by your child’s teachers and executive staff, the people who know your child best at school, has been spent considering assessment data and peer relationships to form the most effective classes possible. They are experienced, educationally trained and dedicated professionals who want the very best educational ‘package’ for your child at Crookwell Public School.

I want you as parents to embrace and fully support this plan however I do understand that some of you will have questions and concerns that you would like addressed. I encourage you to phone me on 48 321 213 to discuss the matter or make an appointment to arrange a meeting time if you have any questions or concerns.

Early in Term 1 2021 a ‘Meet the Teacher’ afternoon will be conducted. I hope that you will be able to attend these meetings to understand what is happening in classrooms and learn the steps you can take at home to best support your child’s academic and social development.

Early Stage 1

Kindergarten: 17 gorgeous Kindergarten students will be taught by Mrs Margi Hayes and assisted by Miss Kirstie O’Neill. Prior to commencing school all Kindergarten children will participate in BEST START Assessments on Friday 29th January, 2021.

Once the children commence their formal schooling they will participate in the highly successful L3 (Language, Learning and Literacy) program. Kindergarten will be housed in the current purpose designed Kindergarten classroom.

It will also allow our Year 3 students, who are entering a new stage, an advantage as the classes can operate similar to what they are accustomed to in the infants.

Miss Kemp will be teaching STEM and Science to all students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 in the Dingo room. Miss Kemp will also be teaching a group of Year 5/6 students English and mathematics four days per week.

The Year 5/6 classes have been successful this year which has allowed for smaller class sizes, peer tutoring, academic needs to be met and fostering friendships across different year levels.

Students will still have a Yr 5/6 base class for Stage 3 but there will be extra time for Year 5 and Year 6 to be together as a year group based on the feedback we received this year. Year 6 will still hold all leadership roles, have special privilege of the Year 6 quad and attend camp as a Year 6 class.

Additional Staff

Ms Lauren Caffery will begin as relieving assistant principal in 2021 alongside Mrs Bell and Miss O’Neill. Miss O’Neill will be assisting in Kindergarten while also holding the role of the school’s Learning Assistance Support Teacher (LAST) where she will be working with students across the school requiring additional academic assistance. Mrs Mel Stepien will be working two days per week to provide release from face to face for the infants staff.

Mr Atfield, Mrs Atfield, Mr Roberts, Miss Wilson and Mrs Graham will no longer be a part of the staff. Mr and Mrs Atfield will be on leave while Mrs Graham has been appointed to The Crescent School in Goulburn while Mr Roberts and Miss Wilson are taking on temporary roles at other schools in 2021. On behalf of the Crookwell Public School community I would like to thank Mr Atfield, Mrs Atfield, Mrs Graham, Miss Wilson and Mr Roberts for their contribution to Crookwell Public School’s students and wish them well in the future. Mr Bojan Nedanoski is taking leave in 2021.

School Learning Support Officers, Mrs Kate Gay, Miss Jayde Della, Mrs Karen Lynam and Mrs Nicole Price will continue to provide additional assistance and support to students in classrooms across the school.

Mrs Billie Willis is taking leave in 2021 and a replacement School Administration Manager will be relieving in her position with the support of Mrs Amanda Merryfull and Mrs Emma Bilsborough.

Enrolling Now For 2021

If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2021 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form by the end of this term. This will allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

Details For Starting School Next Year School re-opens for the 2021 academic year with TWO staff development days, Wednesday 27th January and Thursday 28th January 2021 when staff only return to school. Students

in Years 1 to 6 will return to school on Friday 29th January. The 2021 Kindergarten students will commence their schooling on Monday 1st February, 2021 after participating in the Best Start assessment program for approximately 45 minutes on Friday 29th January, 2021.

N.B. Invitations informing Kindergarten families of their child’s Best Start interview times will arrive in the post before the end of this term.

Why composite classes? Multi-age or composite classes are made up of students drawn from different scholastic years. Research has found that multi-age classes may provide social and emotional benefits to students, even though class structure does not determine educational advantage or disadvantage.

Multi-age or composite classes may be established where it is considered that mixing students of different ages and scholastic years is academically and socially advantageous. These classes are often designed to match the organisation of the syllabus, which is based on ‘stages’ running over two years.

That is, Stage 1 subject outcomes are covered over two years (Year 1 and Year 2), Stage 2 subject outcomes are covered over two years (Year 3 and Year 4), Stage 3 subject outcomes are covered over two years (Year 5 and Year 6) with Early Stage 1 being the only stand-alone stage for Kindergarten where the subject outcomes are covered over just one year.

The primary concern for most parents is for their child to be happy at school and the structure of classes does not dictate whether a child will be happy or not at school. The programs and opportunities on offer, in conjunction with positive relationships, contribute to student happiness and engagement at school with the single most powerful contributor being the person standing in front of the students each day, the teacher!

“Straight” grades are made up of students with varying strengths and abilities so in fact by definition – all classes are composite. There is no classroom that exists where all students are at the same level and require the same things, delivered in the same way. So regardless of classroom structure, a child’s education will come down to the quality, effectiveness and commitment of the school and the teacher in charge of managing the class.

Can one teacher actually differentiate for such a wide range of ages, needs and abilities?

Every teacher (whether in a composite or straight classroom) are already providing a differentiated curriculum that caters to all children as individuals and identifying opportunities to extend or support learning. A hardworking teacher can make it work so that the advantages of a composite class outweigh the concerns. An effective teacher will engage all students and students who are motivated and interested will learn whether the class is structured by grade, age, ability, or multi-grade.

Advantages of a composite class

Children in multi-age classes will become more confident making friends across age groups – a skill they will need after school when they are employed.

Over time, students become proficient at problem-solving skills and independent learning. Problem solving is one of the key skills kids will need in the future for both employment opportunities but also resilience in a changing society.

Younger students within a composite grade generally look up to their older peers and aspire to learn out of admiration rather than extrinsic rewards.

Older students learn leadership skills and enjoy the mentoring opportunity and sense of guidance that they can provide to their younger peers.

Composite classrooms can help bring the school community closer as students get to know children of various ages.

The younger students have the opportunity for enhanced learning experiences when they are ready for it.

Children in multi-age classes will become more confident making friends across age groups – a skill they will need after school when they are employed.
