BOOK REVIEWTitle: Tell to win Author: Peter Guber The former CEO of Sony pictures and current CEO of Mandalay Entertainment Group, demonstrates that telling purposeful stories is the best way to persuade, motivate, and convince anyone to do what you need. He reveals the best ways to get the appointment, engage the listener, and close the deal. Title: Winning the war for talent in emerging markets Author: Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Ripa Rashid Interesting, the authors conclude by saying that in this millennium women are different as they demand and get what they want -- instead of dropping out as their mothers did. They also talk about men want similar flexibility like women. The statistics given in the book are excellent and prove women are a compelling talent pool that no one can ignore. However, things change dramatically only when a critical mass of women reaches the top. But getting there continues to be a big challenge as it requires board and executivelevel push. It will eventually happen, as economies move towards services where quality of talent is a deciding factor for success. We are already seeing this in the technology world. Title: Transforming how we make money while making a difference Author: Antony Bugglevine and Emerson Authored by veterans in impact investing, this is the first book that sets a clear direction to his new industry, explaining its nitty gritty and dynamics. Using striking examples, Bugg-Levine and Emerson show how impact investing can be a positive disruptive force and become a transformational vehicle for delivering blended value throughout the investment spectrum. The authors define this emerging industry of participants on all sides of the funding equation -- investors, funders and social entrepreneurs. It reveals how the field can expand so as to address the most critical social issues of our day. Title: Steve Jobs Author: Walter Isakson Some of the most interesting bits in the book deal with his relationship with Bill Gates. When the two first started working together, Jobs was the king -- Apple had over a billion dotards in revenues, while Microsoft was stroll a struggling start up. Jobs had a certain contempt for Gates. The book is a great read for details about Jobs life -- but it actually

(26)

does a better job of fleshing out supporting characters such as Wiz, Mike Marcella and John Scullery (both former CEOs of Apple) and even Gates, than it does in explaining the paradox that was Jobs.

Title: A CEOs life story of Building the worlds most popular brand Author: Neville Is dell and David Beasley Coca-coal has had many rough patches in its history. It had to face PR debacles, staunch prejudices and tough market weather to emerge the winner it is today. Neville Is dell, who played a vital role in the soft-drink giants recent turnaround, has served the company more than 30 years, retiring in 2009 as CEO. This book, a first by a Coca-Cola CEO, features his personal and professional story and the canvas covers continents: from Northern Ireland, South Africa, Australia, the Philippines, Russia, Germany to India. Isdells Coke story has lessons that would appeal to anybody who has ever taken the pause that refreshes. Title: India: The sprit of enterprise Author: Text by Ashok Malik Foreward by T. N. Ninan This year, India marked 20 year of economic reforms. The Indian entrepreneurs have succeeded against the odds--unlike in China there has been very little effective delivery by the government of public goods like roads and power--makes their story even more fascinating. This is a largely happy book, barring highlights the challenges ahead: infrastructure, skills and urbanization. Entrepreneurs are footloose. If Indian story falters, our entrepreneurs will go overseas. Title: Infrastructure at crossroads Author: Gajendra Haldea Well, it has not been only about fighting. His contribution to develop the warp and weft of infrastructure policy over almost two decades has not seen any parallel by any bureaucrat in any sector today. The comprehensiveness of his input is well-capture in infrastructure at crossroads, which is a collection of articles written by him over the past decade. For those interested in our countrys growth and development, this book is a must read. It widens ones perspective about public policy in India, infrastructure and the related issues of governance and implementation. Title: Business and polity Author: D. N. Ghosh Despite the heavy prose, author D. N. Ghosh, has done a superb job of explaining the reasons why nations rise to, or ebb from power. Nature: natural resources and whether or not a nation is landlocked. Ability: managerial and performance quality of polity and business. Integrity: whether polity and business is interested in serving the nation. Greed operates with two degrees of variance -- one being greedy, but not yet dangerously unpatriotic,. Now, it is your turn to check which of these applies in India.
