The special challenge is to develop the set of energy-saving measures for historic buildings, taking into account the uniqueness of the historically formed construction system, as well as the need for the protection of cultural heritage objects. The key to successful energy refurbishment of historic buildings is identification and understanding of the existing energy efficiency aspects of historic construction, so that they could be kept, saved and efficiently used together with the latest energy improvement measures. The presentation will analyze two scenarios for the energy efficiency improvement on the example of a nineteen century military headquarters building and discuss the chance for its empowerment. In the contemporary conservation practice of historical buildings, the imperative in the process of reuse has been placed on different aspects of sustainability, ranging from authenticity and integrity preservation, through minimum intervention and reversibility, to energy efficiency.
