EXAMS: JUST TO PASS? Exams! This one word is enough to get our adrenaline accelerating our pulse with a speed faster than light. We, the new batch students DBCA-Sulcorna, passed through this phase in our F.Y. B.Sc (Agri). It just feels just like yesterday that we entered the college. We have been so busy this year in observing Nature and its beauty; thinking what to do and what not to do, that we did not even realise that the exams were close at hand! The “Freshers’ Party” was hardly over when we saw the announcement of exams. Our hearts began racing and our blood flowing to our heads with the rapid pumping from heart. Yes, it had to come, it had to be experienced, it was “our” exam. We all worried as it will be our 1st exam in this college and the answers had to be written by us. We were tested in 10 subjects with 2 papers on each day. We wondered how we would do, but the first day passed and we realised that if we have the will then we can do anything; we can find ways to make the thing possible the way we want. Now it is been a week for our exams and we know the exams are meant to come. We check our knowledge of the subject and go for the test; we are not afraid. Yes, we might worry about it, that is natural. I have learned to believe in myself and to deal with the speed breakers and big hurdles yet to come in life. We may falter or fall but we will always get up and face the world. - Sanjana Kerkar F.Y.B.Sc (Agri)

Raksha Bandhan Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrated in different parts of India. Though it is a Hindu festival , it is now celebrated by those practicing other religions too. It is observed on full moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar, in the month of Shravan. The festival signifies the ‘bond of protection’. Love and duty of brother-sister is celebrated. On this day, a sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist with a prayer for his happiness and the brother gives her a token of gift and promise to protect her. Memories may fade with time but the love that a brother-sister share will never fade away, rather it will multiply over years. There might be silly fights between them but love or each other will never change. We might grow old in age but will always be kids at heart.

Friendship Day

Oh how wonderful it is to have a friend in one’s life. A friend is someone who can be trusted, to be relied on and with whom we can share our secrets and do crazy things; with whom life becomes more enjoyable and comfortable to live. Every Year, the first weekend of August is observed as Friendship Day, sometimes coinciding with the Raksha bandhan. On this day, friends come together, exchange greetings and tie a friendship band in the other’s wrist, irrespective of gender, to signify the bond of togetherness. That bond and affection is found only in that crazy person and not anyone else. The mischief, the stupidity, the care, the happiness together creates pleasant memories that last throughout our lives. It is beautiful when it lasts forever. Happy friendship Day!!!

Quote

Spotted Bollworm ( Earias vittela) Main host of the Spotted Bollworm is Cotton but it also infests other Malvaceous plants namely Okra, Hibiscus, etc Young larvae or caterpillars attack growing shoots leading to drooping and withering of the top shoot. They also make holes in young leaves. In later stages buds, flowers and bolls are also damaged. Flower buds open up pre-maturely causing ‘flared squares.’ In damaged cotton bolls pulp is eaten up and lint is stained. The Bhendi or Okra pods are also damaged . Life cycle Adult has yellowish fore wings with elongated green streak in the middle. Hind wing is pale whitish. Oviposition or egg laying takes place in the night. Female deposits 2-3 eggs on leaf bract. Fecundity is 300-400 eggs per female. Full grown larva is about 2 cm long, brownish with white patches on the dorsal side of the body and larva development takes 12-8 days. Pupation takes place on the plant or in the soil on the fallen leaves. A boat shaped greyish silk cocoon is constructed for pupa formation. Pupal period is 7-10 days. Control Sprinkle ash on lady finger when wet and spray water on fruits on the eggs. Spraying neem oil emulsion with detergent or extract of Eupatorium, Vitex negundo or Lantana leaves reduces infestation and damage.

Just within a Day Exam stress is tough to deal with, but if you want to get somewhere you have to put in some efforts to achieve your goal. Finally our ISA exams approached. We inculcated the habit of preparing the previous day itself. Anyhow we got to push ourselves because no one else will do that for us in the hostel. We entered the exam hall on the first day with our fingers crossed. That fear could be seen more on Freshers as they were new to this system. A silent prayer was murmured by each soul to remember whatever we learnt the previous night. This fear comes and goes, so did our exams. It was like an adventure to study for two papers within a day.

Believe in yourself. Even if you don’t, pretend that you do, and at some point you will.

Goa – An overview Mesmerising! A year ago, before visiting Goa, I expected it to be a place of modern lives, where people drink spirits and smoke, follow foreign culture and are selfish natured. Everything turned opposite to my expectations. Here people are helpful and caring. The best quality I found in them is that they never isolate anyone but always keep them in their company. They prefer enjoyment rather than confining their lives to the usual boredom that others call ‘life’. They are satisfied with whatever they have and find happiness even in little things. They are contented and use a word called ‘Sussegad’ to describe their contentment. There is no gender crisis too. I would say it is much safer place for girls to be in Goa. Goans know to accept the best part from other cultures. Goan culture is unique and blend of other culture too. Through my experience and my personal view, Goa is beautiful place inhabited by beautiful hearts.

Thoughts As the 1st batch of Don Bosco College Of Agriculture the Fortunate Forty (now 38) did not have in-house teaching faculty in Animal Science and Dairy Science (ASDS). For the 1st semester the students were taken to ICAR , Old Goa for performing the Dairy practical sessions under the guidance of Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Dr.R.S Rajkumar and Dr. Chetan Kumar who are the scientist in Animal Sciences department in ICAR-CCARI, Ela. In 5th semester we are lucky to have a teacher in Animal science. We were taught how to clot and do boil tests for raw milk. We got information on difference between exotic and indigenous cows and many more things. We are lucky to get the teachers in all the departments this year.
