SEAHAWKs Over TurkeyTurkish Navy to Get 17 S-70B Helicopters

STRATFORD, Conn. – Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. has submitted better than projected performance test results of its latest testing on the 4th generation rotor blade to the U.S. Marine Corps.

The 4th Generation™ blade follows in a long chain of innovations in the area of rotor systems. It builds on the work done for Sikorsky’s state-of-the-art Growth Rotor Blade (GRB™) currently used on the UH-60M and S/H-92™ helicopters.

The CH-53K model wind tunnel testing performed late last summer has shown a significant improvement in forward flight efficiency over the GRB. Earlier in the year, similar model rotor hover testing indicated large gains in hover efficiency. Together, the two tests further validate the large investments that Sikorsky has made in 4th Generation blade aerodynamics.

“This is a tremendous improvement in the rotor system. The performance of the advanced blade com-pared to our current technology translates directly into

increased payload range. For example, based on model rotor test results, we expect range improvements of up to 60 nautical miles over the GRB blade for similar H-60 applications. Also, for certain hot-high conditions, the aircraft Maximum Cruise Speed will increase by eight knots,” said Bob Moffitt, Sikorsky’s Manager of Flight Sciences and a 38-year veteran in rotor system design.

Currently used by the U.S. Marine Corps, the three-engine Sikorsky CH-53E SUPER STALLION™ helicopter is the largest, most powerful marinized he-licopter in the world. It is deployed from Marine Corps amphibious assault ships to transport personnel and equipment, and to carry external (sling) loads.

The CH-53K will maintain virtually the same foot-print as the CH-53E, but will nearly double the payload to 27,000 pounds over 110 nautical miles under “hot- high” ambient conditions. The CH-53K’s maximum gross weight will increase to 84,700 pounds versus 73,000 pounds for the CH-53E.

FORT RUCKER, Ala. – A 20-year Army veteran has been named NCO Flight Instructor of the Year for 2006.

SSG Errol G. Basa, a former UH-60 crew chief, has been an instructor for the last three years, currently teaching the Non-rated Crew members Instructor Training Course at Fort Rucker. Basa received his award at the Fort Rucker Academic Instructor/Instruc-tor Pilot of the Year 2006 awards ceremony held Nov. 15 at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker.

“I enjoy instructing because it gives me the satis-faction of knowing that I help instill standards that will help our soldiers to get home safely,” Basa said after receiving the award. “As they say, ‘knowledge is power,’ but shared knowledge is more powerful.”

Basa teaches the Aircrew Training Program, Methods of Instruction, Fundamentals of Instruction, Military Briefings, After Action Review, Safety, Air Crew Coordination, Flight Duties, UH-60 Systems, Inter-

nal/External Load Operations, Refueling Operations, Malfunction Analysis, Environmental Operations, Aerial Gunnery, and Fratricide.

Instructors are nominated each quarter by their supervisors, who then select the annual winner from among the quarterly winners. Basa was named the quarterly award winner last April.

SSG Basa hails from Union City, California. He has a wife, Pamela, two sons, James and Julien, and a daughter, Erriale.

Shay Collins, office manager for Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.’s Fort Rucker office, presented Basa with an additional award from Sikorsky during the event.

“It is nice to know that we have such dedicated sol-diers who enjoy teaching others. SSG Basa’s attitude, professionalism and motivation is truly an asset to the U.S. Army and our nation,” Collins said.

Sikorsky to establish its European base in Poland?

Poland A.M. 29-06-2006 , ostatnia aktualizacja

The largest American helicopters producer, Sikorsky Aircraft,

wants Polish suppliers to help it conquer the European

market.

Last year producers of choppers sold machines worth $2 billion, while Sikorsky holding 35% of the world market sold

products worth $200 million on the European market. "We want to be substantially more competitive on the Old

Continent and one cannot achieve it without industrial and distribution back-up. We want to create it in Poland," said

Steve Estill, deputy president of Sikorsky. Representatives of the company assured they would invest even if they lost

in a Polish government tender for several tens of helicopters for the army and rescue services. "We propose serious

investments in other companies, which need orders very much. One has to make use of the traditions of the national

aviation industry," said Deputy Economy Minister Pawel Poncyljusz. The Americans stressed they do not want to

purchase Polish companies and refused to reveal value of the investment, but they have permission to transfer the

most modern technologies to Polish plants. (Rzeczpospolita, p.B4) M.M.

The U.S. Military Academy Department of Systems Engineering class visited Sikorsky Aircraft’s Stratford facility for a tour and comprehensive briefing. The group of cadets could one day be flying the UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopters.

Aircraft Models Inspire Future Aviators

Mike Mudd, manager, government business development for Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., speaks to cadets in the military hangar at the Stratford facility during the group’s tour of the company.

STRATFORD, Conn. – Future BLACK HAWK pilots got a chance to see the real thing up close recently when the U.S. Military Academy Department of Systems Engineering class visited Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.’s Stratford facility on Nov. 16. Two faculty of-ficers and 38 cadets traveled by bus from West Point, N.Y. for a tour and comprehensive briefing.

“These are future officers and leaders of the U.S. Army, some of whom will one day become Army avia-tors and fly the UH-60M BLACK HAWK,” said Michael Mudd, manager, Government business development, for Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.

The cadets’ tour included visits to the Sikorsky Heritage Center, Transformation Center, Military Aircraft Center and Flight Operations, Commercial Aircraft Center, Systems Integration Labs and the Earned Value Program Control Center.

In addition, the group learned more about United

Technologies Corp. and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. during their briefing, which included information on the Defense Acquisition Management System, the Depart-ment of Defense Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution System, the Joint Capabilities Integra-tion and Development System, and Project Termina-tion. Delivering those briefings were Bob Mastronardi,

Mark Rowland, Steve Engebretson, Tom Nicolett and Michael Mudd.

Dave Zack of UH-60M Programs also gave the cadets a briefing on the UH-60M BLACK HAWK Program, including Project Initiation and Selection, Project Implementation, Project Control, Monitoring and Auditing.

The visit was memorable for the cadets, according to their instructor, MAJ Chad Jagmin.

“On behalf of the engineering management cadets of the Department of Systems Engineering at USMA, I’d like to thank you for such an organized, profes-sional and informative visit to the Sikorsky facility,” Jagmin told Sikorsky representatives after the tour. “Every aspect of the visit was top quality. I think the ca-dets left the visit with an experience of a lifetime.”

MILTON, Fla. – Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. recently provided some tangible inspiration for student Naval Aviators during the annual Naval Helicopter Association Fleet Fly-in at Naval Air Station Whiting Field when the company presented models of the MH-60R helicopter to the commanding officers of Helicopter Training Squadron Eight (HT-9-8) and Helicopter Training Squadron Eighteen (HT-18).

The squadrons, based at Whiting Field, conduct all basic helicopter flight training for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard helicopter pilots.

The models will be showcased in each squadron’s fleet aircraft display case as representations of what the

young student aviators have to look forward to when they reach the fleet.

The NHA Fleet Fly-in takes place each October at Whiting Field. Fleet helicopters of all types and their crews attend the event to provide aircraft static displays as well as flight orientations and briefings to the student Naval Aviators.

“The objective is to provide exposure to Fleet aircraft and missions, thereby assisting the students in prioritizing which aircraft they would like to fly upon receiving their wings and transitioning to their first fleet squadron,” said Greg Hoffman, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. manager, business development/strategic planning.

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. observed the 231st birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 10 with a

ceremony and cake cutting. The observance followed a tradition that Marines observe in pausing to share cake and sometimes a holiday meal on the occasion of the Corps’ birthday, regardless of where they may be around the world.

Following introductory remarks by CH-53K Pro-gram Manager Dave Haines, Sikorsky Pilot John Rucci read a birthday message from General M.W. Hagee, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. Rucci is also a reservist assigned to HMH-772 at Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove, PA and flies the CH-53E in his “spare time.”

The U.S. Marine Corps was first organized as a naval infantry in 1775 when the Second Continental Con-gress resolved to raise two battalions of Continental Marines.

Real-life Heroes Meet Hollywood

Chuck Norris and Marshall Teague may be martial arts experts and action movie heroes, but can they say they’ve logged more than 500 hours of total flight time in the theater of war? CW3 Rob Fiest, an 18-year Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. employee currently serving with the Virginia National Guard in Iraq, can.

In fact, he’s logged over 400 hours of that time using Night Vision Goggles. Even “Walker, Texas Ranger,” can’t say that.

Fiest recently flew Norris and Teague in a UH-60 in support of a USO tour in the Al Anbar Provence in November.

“Chuck Norris and Marshall Teague were great. We flew them all over the place and they did the USO thing,” said Fiest. “They were very talkative and supportive of our efforts here. It was uplifting to hear those guys thank us and tell us how proud they were of what we are doing.” Fiest, 43, has been in Iraq for 10 months and has been flying the UH-60 BLACK HAWK for 10 years. Currently Maintenance Officer, Fiest’s

unit is in direct support of Marine Air Group 16 and 3rd Marine Air Wing. His work takes him to Abu Graib, Falluja, Hadithia, Ar Ramadi, Baghdad, and several towns along the Syrian boarder. Fiest is looking forward to returning home in early 2007. He has a wife, Karen, and four children, Kyle, 15, Taylor, 13, Courtney, 7, and Katie, 1.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – A high reliability fiber-optic inertial measurement unit from Northrop Grum-man Corp. has been selected by Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. for the BLACK HAWK UH-60M helicopter’s Fly-by-Wire Upgrade Program to supply navigation information for the BLACK HAWK’s flight control computers.

The UH-60M program will upgrade the U.S. Army’s current BLACK HAWK fleet of UH-60A and UH-60L models into the UH-60M standardized configuration. The upgrades will include the incorporation of a digi-tized cockpit for improved aircraft systems to increase combat situational awareness and extend the service life of the aircraft. The UH-60M is currently in low rate production.

The new unit uses the LN-200 inertial measurement unit which is currently in operation on U.S. Army BLACK HAWK helicopters and is also deployed in many other applications across a wide variety of military platforms.

They recently flew actors Chuck Norris and Marshall Teague in a UH-60 in support of a USO tour in the Al Anbar Provence.
