That was the conclusion of recent studies released by BIO/Battelle and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), which concluded that “Michigan has the assets to support and grow bioscience, particularly in the presence of its major research universities.” The academic bioscience R&D expenditures totaled $1 billion in fiscal2010withindustrypayrollsreachingnearly$2.5billionforthesameperiod.

Michigan is home to almost 600 bioscience companies that employ ~40,000 in the pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics, bio-agriculture, food/nutraceuticals, bio-based products and bio energy. The state’s contract research industry alone has the depth to handle business from across the globe at any stage of development.
