The 2013 survey is due Jan. 31, 2014, and submitting it is a requirement for the Star Council Award. Please ensure each council’s officers are keeping track of the great work done on behalf of the Order. Last year the Knights of Columbus set a new record for charitable donations and service hours with $167 million and 70 million hours donated to charity. FRATERNAL ACTIVITY SURVEY DUE JANUARY 31, 2014 District Deputy 2014 MARCH FOR LIFE IS NEXT MONTH T he 41st annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 and the Walk for Life - West Coast will be held in San Francisco, Saturday, Jan. 25. Pease encourage each of your councils to participate, whether separately or in concert with other councils. One way to assist is to subsidize transportation to either event. Those who cannot make it to Washington or San Francisco can participate in state or local pro-life events. In addition to members and their families, consider inviting and offering transportation to other parishioners, including squires, high school and/or college students, seminarians, religious sisters and brothers, clergy, and even non-Catholics who wish to attend. What better way to evangelize than supporting this valuable cause? Councils may order “Defend Life” signs from the Supreme Council office for their Culture of Life event by calling 203- 752-4403 or emailing [email protected]. Specify name, address, telephone number, council number, and the number of “Defend Life” signs needed. The March for Life is a featured program which allows a council to meet all of the requirements for the Culture of Life category for the Columbian Award. PROGRAM OF THE MONTH: FREE THROW CHAMPIONSHIP T he Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship has been providing a safe, positive environment for kids of all faiths for more than 40 years. And the program is now expanding to include nine-year-olds. The contest is easy to conduct, requiring just a couple of brother Knights, access to a hoop, and some minor paperwork. A free throw kit is available at kofc.org/forms, which has materials for 75 participants. (Those without internet access can call 203-752-4016 to place the order.) Use the posters included to advertise the contest beforehand. Try to register contestants prior to the event to get an idea of how many will participate. Local winners can move up the ladder to district, regional and state level contests, with the highest scoring state winner receiving a trophy. CATCH UP! – NEW INCENTIVE PROGRAM I f any of your councils fell short of the One Member per Council per Month goal earlier this year (i.e. they had less than four new members by the end of October), they will have the opportunity to earn VIP points by catching up between November and January. If by Jan. 31 a council has recruited at least seven new members, it is awarded 2,000 points for each member recruited between November and January. And for each additional member above seven recruited during this period, the council receives 4,000 points. Please encourage your councils to take advantage of this opportunity to grow, and reward the most active recruiters by sharing VIP points among them.
