District Deputy Reminder February 2013 Forty cans for Lent Food drives are common at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but in this economy many people are hun- gry all year. Why not bring a new idea to your coun- cil? Try “40 Cans for Lent.” The idea is simple; council members commit to donating 40 cans of food (one can per day) during Lent and it is most certainly in keeping with the spirit of Lenten sacrifice. It can work even better if the pastor of the parish your council serves will allow your council to promote the idea to parishioners. And remember, “40 Cans for Lent” counts as a Food for Families program. A council fills all require- ments for the Family category on the Columbian Award Application Form (#SP7) if it collects and dis- tributes a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and con- tributes 100 man-hours of service to the program. As an added bonus, the Supreme Council offers fi- nancial rebates to councils that donate food or money. Retroactive to July 1, 2012 (the first day of the fraternal year), the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500, or for every 500 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank, or soup kitchen, up to a maxi- mum refund of $500 per council per fraternal year. Indicated contributions of food and/or money should be cumulative for the fraternal year; there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made, nor does every contribution have to be for at least $500 or 500 pounds of food. Star Council

We’ve passed the halfway point of the fraternalyear. How are you progressing toward your goalof becoming a Star District?

The answer to that question may well lie in how wellyour assigned councils are doing towards their goalof achieving the Star Council Award. When councilsare Star Councils everyone wins. Catholic men andtheir families win because they get to experience thebenefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus, including the opportunity for financial protectionthrough our top-rated insurance program. Parishesand communities win because they benefit from anactive, growing, engaged group of Catholic men and

their families looking to make things better. And dis-trict deputies win because Star Councils equal StarDistricts.

So – if you want to become a Star District – helpyour councils to become Star Councils. There is nobetter way!

Special Olympics

The Special Olympics mission is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a va-riety of Olympic-type sports for children and adultswith intellectual disabilities, giving them continuingopportunities to develop physical fitness, demon-strate courage, experience joy and participate in asharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their fami-lies, other Special Olympics athletes and the commu-nity.”

For 40 years K of C councils have helped carry thismission forward with contributions of $385 million andcountless hours of volunteer work and moral supportto athletes and the games. In 2011 alone local andstate councils provided 288,756 volunteer hours andjust over $3.2 million to Special Olympics.

As an organization the Knights of Columbus isuniquely positioned to provide support to SpecialOlympics. Councils can raise funds through driveslike the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabil-ities popularly known as the “Tootsie Roll Drive” orother events. And K of C members represent a largeforce of volunteers who make a big difference in or-ganizing and running Special Olympics events.

Councils contributing at least 200 man-hours insupport of local, regional or state Special Olympicsactivities and raising at least $2,000 for SpecialOlympics fill all requirements for the Council Activitiescategory on the Columbian Award Application form(#SP-7). The form may be found in the Council Re-port Forms booklet (#1436) along with the Partner-ship Profile Report with Special Olympics (#4584).The forms can also be found at kofc.org/forms. New Councils and Circles

Councils and the IRS

An interesting question recently came through the DD Mailbox ([email protected]): “One of the councils inmy district did not submit their 990N forms as required and had their tax free status revoked. How dothey go about getting a new EIN number?” The IRS requires councils assemblies and circles to file,Form 990 each year. Annually, the Order’s Legal Department sends all K of C units a mailing explainingthis and what they must do to comply. Another good source of answers to tax questions and manyother issues is the Officer’s Desk Reference which may found on the website kofc.org. Grand knightsand financial secretaries may sign into the Officers section and click on the Desk Reference. If the grandknight and financial secretary do not have a password to access the Officers’ section they may obtain itby calling Customer Service at 800-380-9995.

District Wardens

District Deputy Mailbox ([email protected]) has gotten many questions about district wardens. TheSupreme Council does not recognize the position nor are any provisions for the position in the Charter,Constitution and Laws of the Order; however jurisdictions have the choice of allowing district wardens.District warden jewels and robes may be purchased through the Official Fraternal Suppliers listed onpage 42 of the Supply Catalog, but the cost is not chargeable to the Supreme Council. Check with yourstate deputy to find out if your jurisdiction reimburses any expenses for the district warden and if theymay attend state meetings in their capacity as district wardens.
