In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

• Before we started our trailer, I researched into different trailers to gain a good understanding of the conventions. Such as:

Friday the 13th (Marcus Nispel 2009) Scream (Wes Craven 1996) Let me in (Matt Reeves 2010)

• According to Burtons theory, Genres must have predictable and repeated elements, that make them distinctive which helps to define them.

• The horror genre tends to have: • Low key lighting, • The use of red, • And is usually set in an isolated place.

• Therefore, in our trailer, we had to keep in mind what elements we wanted to repeat and which we wanted to either challenge or develop.

• We repeated the use of low key lighting, (hospital scene) and we used gore/blood during the torture scene.

• However, we had only chosen to challenge the character used. (Antagonist). In most movies, when children are the antagonist, they are often white, although, we had chosen not to have one as our antagonist.

• While I researched into the horror genre, the repeating conventions found within plot lines, titles and characters were:

• Protagonists, • Stock Characters and• Making sure that the plots and stock situations are

predictable and recognizable.

• In most trailers, masks are often used for antagonists to highlight the separation and isolation.

• My bloody Valentine (George Mihalka 1981)• Freddy vs Jason (Ronny Yu 2003) • The strangers (Bryan Bertino 2008)

Our aim…• Was to create a sense of realism a sense of realism through

the use of iconography. • We challenged the conventions by having our antagonist

exposed in a long gown with blood and bruises.

Themes…We became influenced by revenge and ghostly themed trailers

such as: • I spit on your grave (Steven R. Monroe 2010) • Nightmare on Elm Street (Samuel Bayer 2010) • The Unborn (David S. Goyer 2009) We projected the message through voice-overs and use ofdialogue in the trailer.

Characters…• The protagonist are usually heroes or villains that have the

same qualities across a number of genres such as : • Resident Evil - Alice (Paul W.S Anderson 2002) • Jennifer’s body – Needy (Karyn Kusama 2009)• Constantine – John (Francis Lawrence 2005)

Protagonist…• For our protagonist, we chose to have an older and more

mature character. • Most trailers/films we had researched had been targeted at

people ages 15+, and most had been in their 20’s. • We challenged the convention in a horror trailer by not

having a typical white man as the hero such as: • Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright 2004)

Antagonist…• The Antagonist in trailers are usually those who are in

opposition to the heroic figure or Protagonist. • For our villain, we chose to have a young girl as it shows

vulnerability in a child, which challenges the stereotype of an older antagonist.

• We were mostly influenced by The Unborn (David S. Goyer 2009) when choosing the Antagonist.

• We challenged the convention of the Antagonist by having a teenager as the villain.
