Director’s LetterSchool integration began in Pecos, Texas in 1955. I was in the 10th

grade. We were apprehensive about how this was going to work out. School started in September with full integration. Our High School had approximately 400 students in total, including 30 from the “other” school joining our ranks. There were some minor problems in the beginning with each side sort of keeping their distance.

Then basketball season started. One of the new black students was 6’3”. Bubba Ephriam could slam dunk! He was great. His basketball skills earned him the respect of the entire school body. And the girls – when Bubba jumped up to dunk the ball, they went crazy. Bubba would just smile with his mouth full of gold teeth and the girls melted. Bubba grew an inch every time the newspaper came out. I believe they had him almost 7’ by the end of the season. He was also a great person and a friend to ev-eryone. Bubba was singlehandedly responsible for the smooth integration of Pecos High School. There was never a problem. Hope you enjoy our show and maybe learn something.Jim WalkerDirector

From the Producers:We hope you enjoy a trip back in time with this production. The last time images were shown on a movie screen at the Crighton Theatre was 1967. Images and movie trailers that audiences at the Crighton would have seen in 1948 will be on the screen before the show (1948 is when the action of the play begins). This beautiful space where you are now seated is turning 80 years old this year. Did you know this was a segregated theatre? There is still a notch in the balcony where a wall once was that divided white from black. There was a separate ‘Colored’ entrance to the Crighton with sepa-rate stairs to the balcony. Do you remember this? Did you come to the Crighton when it was a movie theatre? What are your favorite memories of the Crighton? Do you have any pictures of the Crighton we could share on ‘the big screen’? If so, we’d like to talk to you! Contact Steve Wong to share your memories of the historic Crighton Theatre: [email protected] Enjoy the show!

CRAIG CAMPOBELLA (Boolie Werthan) This is Craig Campobella’s first return to the Crighton Theatre stage since the 2007 offering of Arsenic and Old Lace where he frightened small children and adults with his portrayal of Johnathon Brewster. He has been seen and heard in many Houston area commercials and industrial film. As a voice over talent he was cast as the voice of Sam Houston in the in-depth documen-tary of Houston’s life seen nationwide on PBS which recently won five Emmy awards. He has played many character roles locally including Sgt. Toomey in Biloxi Blues, Ray Bud in Dearly Departed, Rev. David Mar-shall Lee in The Foreigner, Martini in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest among many others. Craig wants to thank his wonderful wife Cristy for her support during this pro-cess and life in general and his cast mates for making this experience, artistically and socially, a delight.

MARILYN MOORE (Daisy Werthan) Marilyn has been involved with community theatre in Conroe for the past 26 years. She was last seen with Stage Right in The Red Velvet Cake War. Recent performances at the Owen Theatre include Grace in Bus Stop, Flora Van Huesen in The Matchmaker, Eleanor in The Lion in Winter, Mrs. Dubose in To Kill A Mockingbird, and Betty Meeks in The For-eigner. Marilyn is a four time Owen Theatre Montie Award winner as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Marilyn is retired from Conroe ISD and is currently employed as a Fitness Trainer at Conroe’s Super-Slow Facility, Exercise Defined. Special thanks to Carolyn and Steven Wong for imagining and producing this beautiful classic.

ARTHUR L. STRINGER (Hoke Coleburn) Ar-thur L. Stringer is a relative newcomer to the field of acting. Art has performed with The Players Theatre Company over the past several years in minor roles. The specific productions were: To Kill a Mockingbird, Fantasticks, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and most recently South Pacific. Art will be making his debut performance in a major role after be-ing selected for the role of Hoke Coleburn.

JIM WALKER (Director) Born and raised in West Texas, Lamesa and Pecos. Except for a two year job transfer and three years in the Air Force, I have lived in Texas all my life. I have always been interested in the history and culture of Texas, especially the Texas Revolution. I spent ten years in Dallas and Conroe as an independent Iceman, deliv-ering ice to grocery stores and around the lake. I was living in Dallas in 1963 when John Kennedy was assassinated. I was at the pa-rade standing just one and a half blocks from the spot where he was shot. I have eleven pictures of the parade, Kennedy and several of the sites after the shooting. My pictures have been donated to the Sixth Floor Mu-seum at Dealy Plaza in Dallas where two of them are in a current display. My picture of the Texas Theater is for sale in their gift shop. It is the only photograph in their col-lection ever offered for sale. In 1981, I went to work for Gulf States Utilities (now Enter-gy) and stayed twenty one years until my re-tirement in 2002. Retirement has given me the opportunity to visit every major battle site in the Texas Revolution and meet some very interesting authors and historians. I am very interested in Goliad and the Goliad Massacre. I consider this area of Texas His-tory to be the best kept secret in the Texas Revolution. Three hundred and forty two Texans died in a revenge killing under the or-ders of the dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. I have given presentations to seventh graders and civic groups on the Goliad Mas-sacre. Every year in March, the Presidio La Bahia puts on a reenactment of that historic event. I have helped the director of the Pre-sidio put on that event since 2002. I am a past member of the Advisory board there to help redesign and upgrade the museum. I am also a member of the Sons of the Repub-lic of Texas. I have been involved with the Crighton and Owen Theatre as a member of the Crighton Players for over thirty eight years. I have participated in about 100 plays both onstage and off. Since 1991, I have di-rected twenty plays. I was recently honored with a Montie Lifetime Achievement Award. My job with the Lone Star Monument and

Historical Flag Park has been historical accu-racy. I had to choose which flags to fly and why. My job on the board today is to keep the flags in good order. I check them periodi-cally for tears and frayed areas and replacing them when necessary. I also keep the inven-tory of the new and used flags we have in in-ventory. I recently became a member of the Montgomery County Historical Commission.

MARIEDA KILGORE (Assistant Director / Costumer / Set Dresser) You may remember Marieda as the roving reporter in Radio TBS, but her first appearance as Vera in Smoke on the Mountain solidified her love for the the-atre. She was costumer for The King and I, and Steel Magnolias, music director for Win-nie the Pooh and Asst. Dir. in M*A*S*H and Arsenic and Old Lace. Marieda owns The Clos-et Fairy and is a Personal Fashion Stylist. To ensure she has no spare time, she sings with the Christ Jesus Gospelaires, is the Secretary for the Friends of the Flag Foundation and has been married to Lee Kilgore for over 30 years.

DAN TIPPEN (Stage Manager) Since retiring from Harris County CSCD in 2006, Dan has be-come involved with Community Theater. He has been active both on and off the stage in several productions. His favorite roles have been The Captain in Anything Goes, Clarence in Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge, C.J. Scruggs, in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Simon Stimson, in Our Town and the Bartender in Smokey Joe’s Cafe . He received three 2012 Montie nominations, winning one for his role as Walter Cunningham in To Kill a Mockingbird. He and his wife, Helen reside in Conroe.

CRISTY CAMPOBELLA (Running Crew) is ex-cited to be working behind the scenes with a Stage Right production. She has performed in a variety of shows in the area including Bus Stop, Smokey Joe’s Café, You Can’t Take It With You, Southern Hospitality, and Arsenic and Old Lace to name a few. Cristy is a cer-tified wedding and event planner and lives in Conroe with her very talented husband Craig.

KATIE KELLY (Props) Since beginning her “career” in the theater, Katie has had many

experiences and met a lot of wonderful people. As an actress, the comedies she has been in were The Music Man, the world premiere of Mama Won’t Fly and The Carol Burnett Show. Her only dramatic part was Aunt Ev in The Miracle Worker. Katie played the mother in Barefoot in the Park at The Huntsville Community Theatre where there are a lot of lovely people to work with. She is looking forward to more parts there. When not on stage, Katie likes to help with set construction, costumes (The Miracle Worker, My Three Angels, assistant in The Drowsy Chaperone and The Wizard of Oz) and stage managing. Several people have been instrumental in teaching her stage managing which enabled her to be stage manager for such a technical production as The Wizard of Oz. Arsenic and Old Lace pro-vided her the opportunity to run sound for a show. She is happy to be a part of Driving Miss Daisy and learn all about props.

DEREK TWINNEY (Lights Engineer) Derek Twinney, is extremely proud to be return-ing the Crighton Theatre to help be part of the lighting crew. Derek was the lights en-gineer for Anything Goes. Derek lives with his family in Conroe and attends Willis High School. He started with the Crighton The-atre as one of the wonderful BRAVO kids. He would like to thank the Director, and others for allowing him to be a part of this great show and allowing him to grow more tech knowledge in the theater business.

DENNIS O’CONNOR (Master Carpenter) Dennis O’Connor began his love affair with the stage 50 years ago as a street urchin singing with the Cinncinnati Opera in Car-men. He began acting and constructing sets at The Crighton in 1990. He dedicates all of his work to his children Adam, Jonah, Denny and Emmy. Einstein in Arsenic and Old Lace, Joseph in My Three Angels, Pelinor in Camelot, Arnold in The Boys Next Door and Harry in Stalag 17 are among his favor-ite roles on The Crighton Stage. “Please support The Historic Crighton as your hometown theatre. Consider an endow-ment to the Crighton Theatre Foundation for renovations being planned and/or be-come a sustaining member of Stage Right.”

says he. “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” –Al-bert Einstein

DAVE HACKMAN (Set Construction) recent-ly relocated from Springfield Ill. Dave is re-tired and involved in a number of volunteer activities. These included helping renovate an abandoned theatre in Springfield and helping build sets for the last three years. Enjoyed the ‘work’ and the theatre atmo-sphere so joined the Crighton family.

ROGER ORMISTON (Light Design) has per-formed on stage in over 40 productions since 1974. He currently works behind the scenes at both the Owen Theatre and Crigh-ton Theatre in Conroe. He lives in Conroe with his wife Shann Powers and two dog-ters, Shelby and Maggie. He is a home in-spector and owner of 123 Home Inspections.

NICK MARSHALL (Sound Engineer) Nick has been involved in theatre for 7 years work-ing back stage, on stage, and running sound board for Stage Right and The Players. Since he is more technical minded he enjoys the free shows from up in the sound booth. So, if something goes wrong with the sound, you know who’s fault it is.

CAROLYN CORSANO WONG (Pro-ducer/Sound Design) Carolyn is delighted to be a part of this pro-duction. She is a founder of STAGE RIGHT and serves as Artistic Director and Executive

Producer. She has been involved in the-atre for over 30 years as actor, director, producer, and in many back stage roles. Carolyn was happy to be working with old friends and new on this production. She is especially pleased to be working with her husband Steve on the video editing. Check out some of Steve’s work on his interview series One on One: Inside the Crighton (in-cluding an interview with the late Ray Price during his final appearance at the Crighton) on the STAGE RIGHT website www.stage-right.org. Some of Carolyn’s favorite roles on stage include the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz, Dotty Otley in Noises Off, and Louise in Always, Patsy Cline. Favorite roles off stage are wife to Steve, Mom to Michael and partner to her therapy dog Harley. En-joy the show!

STEVEN WONG (Producer/Video Editing) started in theatre 40 years ago as a drap-ery “consultant” and was “convinced” to return onstage for The Music Man (chorus) and The Drowsy Chaperone (Underling) and John in Anything Goes. He is generally seen behind the scenes as producer, lights engi-neer or stage manager. Steve is a founder

of STAGE RIGHT and serves as the board’s treasurer. Love to family – Carolyn, Mi-chael, and Harley.
