About Kheri District

Kheri district, a part of Lucknow division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with itsadministrative headquarters located at Kheri town. Earlier the term Lakhimpur waspopularly known as Luxmipur. The district got its name from a tomb built over theremains of Saiyid Khurd, who died in 1563. According to the second theory, the name ofthe district is taken from the khair trees that once covered a huge part of this place.During the medieval period in the 10th century the place was under the Rajput rulers. Inthe 17th century, the region became a part of Mughal Empire. Slowly and gradually theMuslim rule spread to whole the region. Then British came to India and in the year 1801,a part of Kheri was included in the session. Finally, in the year 2001, it was emerged as aseparate district in the map of Uttar Pradesh.

Geographically, the district lies between 27°95’N latitude,80°78’E longitude and 147maltitude. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,680 sq.km. and it is boundedby Mohan River on the North, Kauriala River on the East, Sitapur district and Hardoidistrict on the South and Pilibhit district and Shahjahanpur district on the West. Theclimate of the district remains hot almost throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occursin the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 888.9 mm in the year of2015-16.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils namely Lakhimpur, Mohammdi,Gola Gokarannath, Nighasan, Dhaurahara and Mitauli Palia Kalan. Moreover, it comprises14 towns and 1794 villages. There are 2 Parliamentary and 8 Assembly constituency inthe district.

According to 2011 the district has a population of 40,21,243 (persons) out of which21,23,187 (males) and 18,98,056 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 894 femalesfor every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the districtwas 25.38 % (persons) including 23.88 % (males) and 27.10% (females). The majorreligion in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 76.55% and 20.08% of the totalpopulation respectively.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Some of its chief agriculturalproducts are wheat, rice, maize, barley, sugarcane, oilseeds and pulses. The cultivationof menthol mint has recently become popular among the farmers of the district. Sugarmills the significant industries of the district. Its two most important sugar mills are BajajHindustan Limited (BHL) sugar plant in Gola Gokarannath and Bajaj Hindustan Limited(BHL) sugar plant in Palia Kalan which are the largest sugar mills in Asia. Some otherforemost industries of India are also planning to set up their plants in the various parts ofthe district. In the year 2013-2014 the gross domestic product of the district was Rs.15,39,976 lakh at current price.

It is an abode of many reputed educational institutions. Some of its well knowneducational institutions are Bhagwan Deen Arya Kanya Inter College, Dharam Sabha InterCollege, Government Inter College, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Saraswati Vidya MandirInter College, St. Don Bosco's College, Guru Nanak Degree College, etc. As per 2011census the literacy rate in the district is 60.56% (persons), 69.57% (males) and 50.42%(females).

Zafar Ali Naqvi, an eminent Indian politician and a former Member of Parliament (2009-2014) from Lakhimpur Kheri constituency was born on 30th April, 1948 at Lakhimpur Kheritown. He is a member of Indian National Congress. Ajay Mishra Teni, a distinguishedIndian politician and the present Member of Parliament of India from Lakhimpur Khericonstituency was born on 25th September, 1960 at Banveer Pur in the Kheri district. Heis a member of Bhartiya Janata Party.

The district has numerous centres of attraction with historical and religious significancewhich allures many travellers from different parts of the world. Naseeruddin Memorial Hall,previously known as Willoughby Memorial Hall was built by theEast India Companyinmemory of Sir Robert William Douglas Willoughby, Deputy Commissioner of Kheri in theyear 1924. Eidgah, a magnificent mosque is situated near the railway tracks betweenLakhimpur and Kheri. Shiv Mandir, located at Gola Gokarannath in the district is a templedevoted to Lord Shiva. Moreover, the place Gola Gokarannath is popularly known asChoti Kashi. Frog temple, an extra ordinary temple constructed by the former king of OelState in between the period of 1860 and 1870 is located at a distance of 12 km. fromLakhimpur. Shiv temple located at the place called Devakali is a very famous temple.Pilgrims from far distance place comes to this temple to offer their prayers.
