Front cover: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on the front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected] The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a “Full English” for two at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!

‘SPOT ThE LOCAL LANDMARK’ Last month’s answer and winner:Quite a few of our readers wrongly identified the landmark as Calke Abbey. It is, in fact, St John Moore Foundation in Appleby Magna. The Grade I listed building was built and designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697 on commission by Sir John Moore who wished to create a school for his local village.

The winning entry was from Lilian Tointon of St Denys Crescent, Ibstock, who wins a Full Breakfast for Two at the Old School Tearooms, Ibstock. The draw (pictured right) was made by Jeanne Millar assisted by Mandy from the Tearooms.

Next month’s draw for the April Competition will also take place at The Old School Tearooms on Friday 22 April 2016.

In the days before policemen had radios, beat bobbies were required to make a point at a public telephone kiosk each hour.

Late one Saturday evening I was standing at a telephone kiosk when I saw a double-decked bus approaching and the driver signalling me with his headlights.

When the bus stopped, I approached the rear platform where the conductor (yes, buses had conductors in those days) who informed me that a drunken passenger on the upper deck was refusing to pay his fare.

Together with the conductor I went to the upper deck where I asked the conductor to ask the man to pay his fair. The man, in his incoherent state, refused to offer any payment.

I then told him that I was arresting him for travelling on public transport and refusing to pay. I pulled him from his seat and propelled him to the stairs.

On leaving the bus, and standing on the pavement the man turned towards me and kicked me viciously on the ankle. I grappled with him and placed him in handcuffs and informed him that I was further arresting him for assaulting a police officer. By this time a second bus had arrived and I took the passengers off the first bus, on to the second bus and commandeered the first bus to take me and my prisoner to police headquarters.

The man was placed in the cells and kept in custody over the weekend.

On the Monday morning I caught the bus to go to Court and, at the next stop, the Chairman of the Magistrates boarded the bus and sat with me. He asked if I was going to Court as he had been summoned to attend.

When I said “Yes”, he wanted to know what it was about. I said that I couldn’t really comment, but he insisted and I related Saturday night’s incident.

I suppose you could say that we had the trial on the bus. We were, fortunately, alright for when my attacker appeared in Court he pleaded guilty to the charges and was asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say.

The man replied, “If you’re going to fine me, I’ve got money” The Magistrate said, “I will not have police officers assaulted by you, or anyone else. You will go to prison for three months.”

Policemen today are not given the respect they were years ago, and Magistrates seem to think that community orders are punishment enough. I am pleased to have served when justice was not only done, but seen to be done.

Very little is know about the the real St George. It is thought that he was born around the year 280AD, though his place of birth is unclear. Many believe he was born to a noble Christian family in Cappadocia, which is now an area of Turkey. he became a solider in the Roman army and eventually became a personal guard for Emperor Diocletian.

The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing a maiden from death originates from medieval times. According to the legend, the dragon guarded the only well in the town of Silene. The inhabitants of the town had to offer a human sacrifice every day in exchange for water. On the day St George visited a princess had been selected for sacrifice. However, he killed the dragon, saved the princess and gave the people of Silene access to water. In gratitude, they converted to Christianity.

St George was tortured and executed on April 23rd 303 for refusing to take part on the systematic persecution of Christians, becoming an early Christian martyr.

It was in the year 1415 AD that St. George became the Patron Saint of England when English Soldiers, under Henry V, won the battle of Agincourt.

On St George’s day, many communities hold annual parades and events to celebrate. This year The Palace are holding a St George’s Day Community Morning and a children’s disco party in the evening. Please see their calender on page 8 for further details. Also, the annual St George’s Day weekend will be taking place on The Green in Ravenstone, on 23rd and 24th April. There will be entertainment, stalls and refreshments.

LADIES ThAT GOLF!The benefits of the course and of golf in general are something that the lady members of the golf club are keen to highlight as they are on a quest to increase the numbers of women playing the game at the course. They invited me over to talk to three ladies who had different stories to tell and it was most interesting to hear what they had to say.

Tracey Bates was introduced to golf by her father and as the eldest daughter was expected to caddy for her Dad so playing golf was a natural progression and at the age of 11 Tracey became a junior member and eventually played for the County Juniors. Her interest in the sport continued into her teens (she says that one of the reasons could have been that there were lots of boys playing at the course but only two girls) but that she gave up the sport when she married at 21.

At the age of 27 her boss invited her to take part in a German Golfing competition as the only woman amongst 24 men - AND SHE WON! Her interest was renewed and although she has two children she still find time for a round of golf in between the school runs but wishes she could play a little more often.

Talking to the second lady Jo Watts, it seems that she had a similar introduction to golf as Tracey as her father booked her six introductory lessons. Despite her initial reluctance, Jo turned up for the first lesson just to please her Dad but says that as soon as she hit the ball straight she was hooked and carried on playing until she was 28 (she even met her husband playing golf).

Jo started playing again a couple of years ago and loves nothing more than sharing a round of golf with friends old and new – not to mention the wonderful lasagne at the end of the match.

The third lady, Julie Draper, was a late convert to the game. Julie has always liked walking but said that she was looking for ‘a walk with a

purpose’. The fresh air and exercise, plus the touch of competition that golf offers, seemed perfect and after taking up the offer of an introductory lesson with Ben Hill, the clubs professional, she has not looked back since joining Willesley.

Working part time, golf fits in very well with Julie’s days off and she says that seeing her game gradually improve is a great spur. The warm welcome whenever she walks into the club house is also one of the reasons she feels so strongly about Willesley as a club and would encourage any one thinking of taking up golf to come along and see what the club has to offer.

All three ladies had different introductions to the game but from all three stories the benefits they derive seem very similar. For example, golf fits in very well with all their different lifestyles. Playing 9 holes of golf can take less than 2 hours and 18 holes of golf can burn up to 900 calories... and this seems to be born out by the three ladies involved who are all slim and active.

Instead of spending hours on a running or weight machine in a gym staring at a blank wall, all these women would rather be gaining the benefits of exercise in the fresh air plus the great laughs they all have on the golf course! Whatever level of golf you play all three ladies agree that the physical and mental rewards are amazing and would love the chance to demonstrate these to potential new members.

When you weigh up all these benefits, and add a great social scene into the mix, the appeal of golf as an ideal way to stay fit seems overwhelming. So come on all you ladies who are looking for an ideal way to stay fit and make lots of great new friends ring Ben Hill, Golf Professional, on 01530 414820 and take the first step in learning to play this great game!

Willesley Park Golf ClubMost keen golfers already know that Willesley Park Golf Club is one of the most picturesque courses in the Midlands, set in a mixture of rolling parkland and heathland it offers a challenge to all golfers no matter

what the standard.

What most people do not realise is that the course was designed by James Braid, one of the finest golf course designers of all time, who’s style led the way in

modern golf course design and we can be justly proud that such a gem of a course is on our doorstep.

A Short history of Film at The PalacePredating all of the Art-Deco style super cinemas of the 1920’s – 1930’s, The Palace is one of the earliest existing examples of a purpose-built cinema in the country. Designed by local architects Goddard & Wain of Coalville and built by Baxter’s Builders, it opened its doors for business on Boxing Day, 1912.

The building has been described as ‘a rare survival of a truly significant type of building of great social importance’. The austere exterior of the building does not automatically fit into the natural perception of entertainment architecture. Its function was to provide the escapism of film. Eventually, unable to compete with the rise of home videos and large out of town cinemas, the last film to roll of the reel, before its closure in 1970, was Walt Disney’s ‘Jungle Book’.

Most of the larger architectural original features were preserved during the restoration and can still be seen, and used, inside The Palace. These include the projection room, the balcony and the impressive proscenium arch around the stage. Just as interesting, are some of the smaller features that have also been preserved, including the tiny ticket hatch inside the lower

porch, where people would queue up for the ‘penny rush’ or the little metal ash trays in the balcony left over from a time when the films must have been viewed through a layer of smoke! Mounted on the wall, visitors may notice the only surviving wooden cinema seat from The Palace, which now bears the names of the serving members of The Palace Management Committee at the time that it was put on display.

Although the days of the smoke filled auditorium are now a thing of the past, The Palace does offer an authentic cinema experience; however, now patrons can also enjoy a drink from the licenced bar, whilst watching the film on the large screen. The Palace is also equipped with blu-ray DVD projector and a Dolby cinema surround sound system.

The Palace is not just a well-preserved example of cinema history. It is also an important community meeting place, a gym (with classes for all ages and abilities), a bingo hall, a play-school, a theatre, a concert hall, a rehearsal and performance space, a market hall, a dance venue, a senior citizens club, amongst many other functions......and it is still a cinema!!

Forthcoming films ‘coming soon’ to The Palace big screen include ‘Bridge of Spies’, ‘Brooklyn’ and ‘Dad’s Army’. Contact Gary on Tel: 01530 262400 for more details.

You may recall that in recent issues of community voice we featured a story on the renovation of the old Ibstock Working Mens Club (now Ibstock Central) and its transformation from a failing business and broken building, into a promising local facility that offers a sports bar, dance school and childrens soft-play centre.

During our visit we learnt more about the Community Interest Company that owns the building and its Managing Director Pete Lewis. We decided to interview Pete and what we discovered was a remarkable story of one man sticking to his guns to keep a boyhood promise to himself….

CV: You describe yourself as a “Social Entrepreneur” can you explain what you do?

PL: (laughing) hardly anyone has heard of that title! It is fairly hard to define… a Social Entrepreneur is someone who runs different projects or business that have a social aim or provide a community benefit. I also find investment or funding for all kinds of new projects and provide advice to struggling businesses that want to turn their fortunes around.

CV: What made you want to do this type of work?

PL: I grew up in an area where there genuinely wasn’t much to do, I often felt bored and wanted to take part in as many activities as possible. However, for all sorts of reasons, access was limited. One experience that affected me as a kid was my local boxing club closing. I promised myself that when I grew up I was going to create stuff for people to do and stop clubs closing.

CV: Can you tell us more about what you have done in this area?

PL: I manage three projects in North West Leicestershire. They are Ibstock Central, Coalville Boxing Club and the New Bardon Community Venue. I took on the Bardon Road Club in 2011 when someone walked into my gym and told me it would be knocked down in six months if someone doesn’t step in. With very little experience in that sector, I agreed to have a go!

CV: How did you find it?

PL: Very challenging. When I took responsibility, the old club were over £70,000 in debt, the building had broken windows, rotting seats, was riddled with damp, faulty wiring etc just to name a few of the many problems! I volunteered for nearly 9 months fending off creditors, renovating

the building and negotiating new suppliers just so we could open the doors. Little did I know, that was the easy part! I had to then acquire over £80,000 worth of funding so I could build a boxing gym in the crumbling function room. The club then traded at a loss for over 18 months until I made it stable.

CV: Wow, did you feel like quitting?

PL: Often, but like one of my favourite film characters Rocky says, “It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward”. Our organisation was formed to maintain a future for the club, stopping was not an option. As it stands today the club is taking more money than it ever has, three times more than when I took over. It has new facilities and is used by over 100 people every week. I think that’s something to be proud of.

CV: And at Ibstock... much of the same?

PL: More! Ibstock Central has a good network of partners that will continue to drive it forward. The soul club, rock ‘n’ roll night, line dancing, dance school and pool teams to name but a few. It also has great on site facilities such as “Monkey Central”.

CV: What’s next?

PL: In less than four years our projects will have ten workers and will be offering all sorts of events and activities to the local community. I hope to be able to sit back and enjoy it along with everyone else. Having said that, I am always open to new work, be that offering advice or a new building.

We wish Pete lots of luck with his present and future ventures and should anyone wish to contact him about anything in this article you can do so by email on [email protected]

However, for the past twelve years Margaret has been fulfilling a second vocation as a volunteer at College Garth Kennels and this is a role that Margaret feels passionately about.

Situated at Hathern on the A6, Collage Garth Kennels has been established for 25 years and specialises in finding homes for homeless dogs. Although a number of the dogs are stray or abandoned, they can also be dogs who have lost their homes for various other reasons e.g. breakdown of a marriage, eviction, owners passing away etc. For a pet from a loving environment it can often be a traumatic experience to find themselves suddenly homeless.

All the dogs are kept in the kennels for seven days in case they are claimed and after that they become the responsibility of the kennels and the search begins to try and find new homes for the unfortunate animals

The details of any dog that has not been re-homed after about 6 weeks are passed on to Margaret who then undertakes a wider search in order to find rescue space for that particular dog. Placing a dog in a rescue

home in another area is often the solution in finding an ideal home. The word ‘ideal’ is very important because if a dog is placed within an unsuitable home then it is likely to be returned and of course this is something that Margaret is keen to avoid.

It can be easier to find homes for the smaller dogs and breeds such as spaniels and labradors can be easier to place. However, should a dog have behavioral problems, such as not liking to be housed with other dogs, then Margaret has to call on her expertise and experience to overcome this problem.

This often means working with other specialist rescue centres and as previously mentioned, it can often be easier to place a dog in another area. Centres that specialise in placing certain breeds can also be a great help and Margaret has worked closely with such organisations as The Rottweiler Rescue Centre and The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue Centre to name but two. But whatever the breed, Margaret is committed to finding homes for all her dogs and says that the true reward comes from eventually seeing a dog become a much loved pet in a new loving environment.

At this point Margaret is most keen to stress that what she does is entirely voluntary and self-funding as she receives no payment for her services from the kennels.

If you would like to help Margaret in her continued quest you can make donations via the Facebook group ‘Give A Dog A Chance’ or if you wish to use Paypal, the account number is [email protected]

It is through the unselfish efforts of people such as Margaret that most charities remain effective and many homeless dogs owe their eventual good fortune to the efforts she has made on their behalf.

EVERY DOG NEEDS A hOMEAs a busy Finance Director for the large travel company, Roberts Coaches, you could be forgiven for thinking that Margaret Bunker has very little spare time for anything else.

Val Charman has been involved with Greyhounds and fundraising for 12 years, after adopting 2 ex-racing Greyhounds who had been rescued from RSPCA kennels in Birmingham.

Over the years Val has managed to combine her love of the breed with another passion, knitting, to create a business designing and making Greyhound related knitwear.

Greyhounds4me first came into being in 2006 with an online forum for people who had rehomed ex racers to share experiences and support each other.

As Greyhounds have less body fat than other breeds, owners were trying to source fashionable coats and sweaters for their hounds to wear in the Winter months and challenged Val to knit some. With Reggie the Greyhound as a model, the first knitted coat was produced and sparked interest which has spread around the globe. Knitters soon requested the pattern so that they could make their own garments and that was the beginning of an unusual business, supplying Greyhound related knitwear and knitting patterns.

Val has now put together a printed book of 48 original Greyhounds4me knitting patterns featuring coats, hats, knitted hounds as well as fun garments for kiddies and adults. Many rehoming rescues and Charities in the UK and overseas use these knitting patterns for fundraising and most have volunteers who knit items for their dog shows and open days.

MOThER’S DAY COMPETITION WINNERSOur February issue of ‘The Voice’ included a Mother’s Day competition to win a bouquet of flowers kindly donated by Colledge’s Florist of Whitwick. After much deliberation, we decided that we were going to have to award a second place as there were two particular entries that really resonated! Our first place winner was Vicky Price of Ibstock who had this to say about her mum, Julie Lowe, also of Ibstock, (pictured left)

“My mum is lots of things, but most of all, she is my best friend. Without her, I’m nothing.”

Second place was awarded to Jennifer Clasper, of Heather (who is pictured bottom left) with her 14 month old daughter Caoimhe. This is why she thinks her mum is the best; “Like an angel, endless love, biggest hugs, listens, makes time, guides, never judges and makes the best Sunday lunch.”

Well done to both of our deserving winners and we hope you all had a lovely Mother’s Day!

Thanks once again to Sue at Colledge’s Florist in Silver Street, Whitwick for her kind donation.

LIFE BEGINS AGAIN AT FORTY FOR COALVILLE MARKETNot many of the hundreds of people who visit Coalville Market every week realise that it can trace it’s history back many hundreds of years. Indeed, it was actually granted a Royal Charter signed by Edward 1 in 1293 so it is fair to say that it has a long and illustrious history. Moving forward several centuries, some of our older readers will recall back in the late sixties that the market was open air and was situated round the clock tower. In the early seventies plans were put forward to move the market to the present indoor site at the back of the precinct but as the market was looked on as being one of the most vibrant in the county it is fair to say that a number of the traders at the time were apprehensive about this.

The new market was officially opened on 22nd October 1975 so last year the market celebrated it’s 40th anniversary. Over the years the market has gone through it’s usual ups and downs but just recently it has experienced a renaissance.

The old toilet block which always blocked out the view of the market entrance has gone and has given the market a new fresh and open aspect. Under the guidence of Market Officer Steve Goode, the market has been successful in attracting a variety of new traders offering such diverse services as full cycle sales and repairs, mobility scooters, chairs and aids and washing machine sales and repairs, a top class butcher and fresh fruit and vegetables to mention just a few.

As well as this there are furniture stalls plus several speciality stalls selling memorabelia and bric-a-brac which attract both the specialist collectors or someone who is looking for that special ornament or piece of jewellery. Don’t forget the on-site cafe, which offers a great variety of mouth-watering snacks and meals all at very reasonable prices.

All in all it is well worth making Coalville Market a regular call when shopping in Coalville as there is something of interest for everyone.

The market is always looking for new traders so anyone interested in please ring 01530 837785 for prices and information.

Sat 5th March - Heather St Johns 1-5 Coventry Copeswood

Saints tumble to a home defeatHeather conceding two goals before the ½ hour mark, pulling one back courtesy of new signing Ryan Nesbitt’s spot kick before the break. The visitors capitalised on slack defending to add 3 goals to their tally. A heavy shower 30 minutes prior to kick off didn’t help Stephen Rigby’s team which included new signing Nesbitt, who joined from Romulus, but still without Luke Pinnock, Harry Reece, Eddie Wilson (suspended) and the injured Dave Williams. The conditions seemed to suit Copeswood as they took the lead after 19 minutes, top scorer Ryan Harkin 19 goals this season being left unmarked just inside the box, his shot looping over Ben Alsopp. Four minutes later the ball was again picked out of the hosts net following Danny Fraser scoring direct from a corner for 2-0. Following a trip on Jack Jepson Saint’s pulled a goal back, the resulting penalty from Nesbitt making it 2-1 at the break.

However things didn’t continue to improve for the Saints in the second half as a Harkin double and a King strike gave victory to the Coventry side with a final scoreline of 5-1.

Sat 12th March - Studley Town 1-1 Heather St Johns

Saints gain valuable pointManager Stephen Rigby had been busy in the week adding 5 new players to strengthen his squad. Straight into the starting line up were Akheem Rose, John Ashfall and Lyndon Weller with Leon Weller and Ellis Porter on the bench. Goaless at the half way stage Saints took the lead shortly after the restart with an Ashfall debut goal, only to see their advantage cancelled by a Stokes equaliser.

SPOTLIGHT ON HEATHER BUSINESSES

Featuring a selection of our advertisers based in the village of heather...

From cars to guitars - and no countryside scars......meet Virge Richichi, a local businessman with many strings to his bow!

One of the longest established businesses in heather is V Richichi Motors Ltd situated at 2 Main Street.

Since starting the business in 1970, Virge Richichi has been, and remains, the proprietor of this busy M.O.T and service centre which over the past 46 years has gained a well deserved reputation for reliability and service, coupled with great prices.

Virge started his working life as an indentured apprenticeship attending college at Burton-on-Trent and Derby and after graduating at 21, he immediately decided to set up how own business at the present premises. Over the years he has seen many changes and the company has seen constant investment to keep up-to-date. This, along with the friendly advice and personal service that the company offers, means that they have retained customers who they first met when the company set up back in 1970, which is a great testament to the reputation that they have established.

At this point Virge is keen to point out that since starting the business over forty years ago, he has had only 2 days off with illness and until very recently he only took a single weeks holiday per year. He has no plans to retire at the moment and is still extremely active, working a full five day week.

Despite running a succesful business, Virge has always been a man who has more than one string to his bow and until he was 46 he was also a well known DJ and guitarist who played at shows all over the country supporting many well-known stars and DJs. On occasions he has also sang with several bands including ‘Choice’, who later morphed into the well-known chart toppers ‘Showaddywaddy’. This passion for music has been passed on to his daughter Sivenia, a gifted singer, guitarist and pianist who intends to pursue a career in music

– an ambition that Virge is happy to endorse.

These days, Virge is a busy School Governor for Ibstock Community College and also a District Councillor who is passionate about local issues, espescially with regard to the Countyside. It was this passion that led to Virge founding the protest group FOIL (Fight Opencast In Leicestershire) in order to prevent large scale opencast mining in the county and this, along with other countryside matters, still remain close to his heart to this day.

Whether as a Businessman, School Governor or Councillor it is fair to say that Virge, has played a significant role in the life of Heather and the surrounding areas and is certainly a character that people have grown to trust and rely on.
