Varias comunidades en el estado mexicano están afectadas
El lunes (27 de Sept.), el gobierno del estado mexicano de Oaxaca reportó daños
en varias comunidades debido a las intensas precipitaciones de lluvia.
El gobernador de Oaxaca Ulises Ruiz informó a los medios de comunicación mexicanos que cerca de 1,000 personas en varias comunidades estaban enterradas en sus hogares debido al deslave.
Una de las comunidades más afectadas es Santa María de Tlahuitoltepec, donde siete personas fueron halladas muertas y hay más de 100 desaparecidas. Según información del periódico El Universal, hay más de 2,000 víctimas.
De acuerdo con un artículo de la prensa mexicana, Ruiz indicó que el gobierno no cuenta con un número oficial de casas enterradas. Los rumores apuntan a que pudieran sobrepasar las 200 a 300.
El deslave en Santa María de Tlahuitoltepec ha dejado destrucción en la comunidad. Varios hogares han quedado destruidos.
Un habitante de ese pueblo, Donato Vargas, comentó que la gente no puede comunicarse. Ellos no tiene agua ni electricidad y los caminos están cerrados.
“Todo lo que tenemos es un teléfono por satélite”, dijo.
Un grupo de rescate de la Cruz Roja Mexicana ha sido enviado a Oaxaca para tratar de ayudar a las víctimas.
El presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón envió un “tweet” en su página Twitter, diciendo: “La ayuda … está en camino, aunque es duro llegar allá”.
El martes (28 de Sept.), el periódico mexicano Milenio reportó que varios grupos de rescate han tratado de llegar al área, pero que no ha sido posible.

El radiotón será el jueves y viernes (7 y 8 de Oct.) de 7 a.m. a 7 p.m. por la estación de radio La GranD (1340AM).
“Hace cuatro año, yo quería hacer algo para ayudar a los niños y a la comunidad”, comentó Diana Raymer, Directora de Ventas del Grupo Reyes Media. “Tengo una madre que tuvo cáncer y a la vez soy madre de cuatro hijas. Pienso que ésta es la mejor conexión para ayudar a gente con cáncer”.
El hospital St. Jude es conocido por sus tratamientos pediátricos de cáncer. Los pacientes son tratados sin importar su situación legal o raza. Y los tratamientos son realizados en base a referencias médicas. La institución depende en su mayoría de los donativos para subsistir.
Ángeles de Esperanza es un proyecto creado por St. Jude para proveer ayuda al hospital. La gente puede inscribirse en él donando $20 al mes por un año. No hay contrato o cuenta, sólo un compromiso moral.

Late Sept. 15, what looked like hundreds
of thousands of Mexicans stood shoulder-to-shoulder in Zocalo Square in Mexico City, blowing horns and trumpets, pointing flags and banners heavenward and throwing confetti and tossing sombreros in the air. They were assembled for the climax of a spectacular program commemorating Mexico’s 200th birthday.
Near 11 p.m., spotlight beams illuminated a balcony of the National Palace. President Felipe Calderon stepped out and waved the Mexican flag. He rang the independence bell and gave the shout of independence, the “grito,” ceremoniously re-enacted annually in honor of Father Miguel Hidalgo’s 1810 revolutionary rallying cry.
“Viva Mexico!” the crowd thundered.In our Kansas family room about 1,400 miles
distant, the pungent, sulfurous haze from spent fireworks didn’t sting our eyes and nostrils. Otherwise, thanks to Univision broadcasting the historic festivities live, we experienced all the rest. We had watched since early evening, when the parade started.
Our prime viewing spot of the nearly-2-mile-long procession along Reforma Avenue to Zocalo square, courtesy of Univision, captured the magic. A grand, slow-moving spectacle with the colorful symbols of our rich culture and more than 7,000 performers proceeded past revelers. The live Angel of Independence suspended above her float glided past the Angel of Independence monument. The shiny giant Quetzalcoatl slid by.
There were columns of 13-foot-tall marionettes portraying revolutionary war hero Emiliano Zapata, Chinelo dancers, rows of performers in the role of La Catrina, actors in traditional costumes presenting the New Fire ceremony, horned skeletons with electric eyes on cycles and many evocative floats designed by Mexico’s best artists.
In the square, aerial acrobats seemingly defied gravity in graceful stunts, including forming the word “Mexico.” Gigantic fireworks displays and light shows lit up the skyline, the sea of people in the square, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. On three stages, Alondra de la Parra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, Los Tigres de Norte and others performed patriotic and folk songs, classical works and contemporary hits.
Capping it off, they assembled a 65-foot-tall sculpture representing one of the many men who fought for independence. Section upon section, the plaster and steel “Colossus” monument rose, towering at last powerfully over the square. It was symbolic – Mexico will stand strong again.
Watching even from afar, I felt the proud pull of kinship with Mexicans everywhere.
People ask why the government spent more than $200 million on bicentennial observances when economics are tight and Mexico’s strug-gling. The celebrations commemorated the 200th anniversary of the start of Mexico’s War of Independence from Spain and the 100th anni-versary of the Mexican Revolution. Mexicans from around the globe and dignitaries from more than 50 countries united in Mexico City to commemorate the dual celebration. Millions more beheld the pageantry on television.
The meaningful, moving parts of the stirring bicentennial celebrations exalting Mexican his-tory and ancestry, symbols, and arts and culture, the masses of proud, Mexicans reveling happily and the strength of their unity – that – and not drug dealers and gangs – is Mexico.
The nimble optimism, native resilience and pluck of the revelers in the square dramatize Mexico’s past and present. More importantly, it reveals the spirit of Mexico’s future.

El pasado 15 de Sept., lo que parecían cientos de miles de mexicanos estaban parados hombro
con hombro en el Zócalo de la Ciudad de México, soplando bocinas y trompetas, señalando banderas y pancartas hacia el cielo y aventando confeti y tirando sombreros al aire. Ellos estaban reunidos para la culminación de un programa espectacular celebrando el aniversario 200 de México.
Cerca de las 11 de la noche, faros iluminaron el balcón central de Palacio Nacional. El presidente Felipe Calderón salió y ondeó la bandera mexicana. Tocó la campana de independencia y dio el grito de independencia, escenificando ceremoniosamente cada año en honor del grito revolucionario del Padre Miguel Hidalgo en 1810.
“¡Viva México!” respondió estruendosamente la multitud.
En nuestra sala en Kansas a casi 1,400 millas de distancia, la bruma penetrante y sulfurosa de los fuegos pirotécnicos lanzados no pico nuestros ojos ni fosas nasales. Un grandioso espectáculo en lento movimiento con los coloridos símbolos de nuestra rica cultura y más de 7,000 participantes avanzaron ante los juerguistas. El ‘Ángel de la Independencia’ vivo suspendido sobre su flotilla pasó frente al monumento del mismo nombre. Quetzalcóatl grande y brillante se deslizó por ahí.
Hubo columnas de marionetas de 13 pies de alto representando al héroe revolucionario Emiliano Zapata, bailarines Chinelo, filas de artistas en el papel de La Catrina, actores en trajes tradicionales representando la ceremonia del Fuego Nuevo, esqueletos con cuernos y ojos eléctricos en ciclos y muchas carrozas evocadoras diseñadas por los mejores artistas de México.
En el cuadro capitalino, acróbatas aéreos parecían desafiar la gravedad con maniobras elegantes, incluyendo la formación de la palabra “México”. Despliegues gigantescos de fuegos pirotécnicos y luces iluminaron el firmamento, a la marea de gente en el Zócalo, a la Catedral Metropolitana y al Palacio Nacional . En tres escenarios, Alondra de la Parra y la Orquesta Filarmónica de las Américas, Los Tigres de Norte y otros interpretaron canciones populares y patrióticas, piezas clásicas y éxitos contemporáneos.
Coronando todo ello, estuvo el ensamblaje de una escultura de 65 pies de alto representando a uno de tantos hombres que luchó por la independencia. Sección por sección, el “Coloso” de acero y yeso se elevó, destacando poderosamente sobre la plaza. Fue simbólico – México se levantará fuerte de nuevo.
Observando aún desde lejos, yo sentí el orgullo de la fuerza del brotar del parentesco con los mexicanos en todos lados.
La gente pregunta por qué el gobierno gastó más de $200 millones en los festejos del bicentenario cuando la economía está limitada y México está batallando. Las celebraciones conmemoraron el 200 aniversario del inicio de la Independencia de México de España y 100 años de la Revolución Mexicana. Mexicanos de todo el orbe y dignatarios de más de 50 países se unieron en la Ciudad de México para conmemorar ambas celebraciones. Millones más contemplaron la pompa en televisión.
Las partes significativas en movimiento de las conmovedoras celebraciones bicentenarias exaltando la historia y abolengo mexicanos, sus símbolos, su arte y cultura, los montones de mexicanos orgullosos deleitándose alegremente y la fuerza de su unidad – eso – y no los narcotraficantes y pandillas – es México.
La capacidad nata diestra y optimista y el valor de los juerguistas en el Zócalo escenifican el pasado y presente de México. Y lo que es más importante, revelan el espíritu del futuro de México.

On Tuesday (Sept. 28), the Mexican newspa-per Milenio reported that several rescue groups have tried to get in the area, but it hasn’t been possible.

“Va ser un evento divertido, donde vamos a tener diversos juegos para niños”, dijo.

Rodgers Health Center.
In addition to the Binational Health Week, another important health event will take place on Oct. 9 at Heart to Heart International in 1021 Pacific Ave. in Kansas City Kansas from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
This event will also include health screenings, and different activities for all the family. The free screenings include skin cancer, blood sugar, blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol, vision, and depression.

Recientemente, algunos de los más fuertes partidarios del presidente Obama han
expresado frustración con sus políticas del VIH/SIDA.
A menos que Estados Unidos cambie su curso e incremente dramáticamente su financiamiento para la lucha global en contra del SIDA, nosotros perderemos millones de vidas y una generación de progreso.
Muchos defensores del SIDA y yo tenemos una sensación de desazón de que la estrategia del VIH/SIDA en la Casa Blanca de Obama no está obteniendo una atención significativa de alto nivel. En contraste, yo sé que la crisis del SIDA mereció una participación presidencial directa durante las administraciones de Clinton y Bush.
Cómo han cambiado los tiempos.En 2008, el entonces senador Obama votó para
gastar $48,000 millones a lo largo de 5 años en la lucha global contra el VIH/SIDA. En la campaña presidencial de ese año, Obama puso en claro su posición: De ser elegido, él “proveería al menos $50,000 para el 2013 para la lucha global en contra del VIH/SIDA”.
Hay poco que explicar sobre el cambio de las prioridades del presidente Obama. Pero el cambio es claro. La Casa Blanca se ha quedado corta en el seguimiento de esas promesas de financiamiento.
Tome el propio programa de la Casa Blanca, el Plan de Emergencia del Presidente para la ayuda del SIDA (PEPFAR). Recently, some of President Obama’s strongest supporters have expressed
frustration with his HIV/AIDS policies. Unless the United States switches course and
dramatically increases its funding for the global fight against AIDS, we could lose millions of lives and a generation of progress.
Many AIDS advocates and I have a sink-ing feeling the HIV/AIDS strategy in the Obama White House isn’t getting significant senior-level attention. By contrast, I know the AIDS crisis merited direct presidential involvement during the Clinton and Bush administrations.
How times have changed.In 2008, then-Senator Obama voted for
spending $48 billion over five years on the global fight against HIV/AIDS. On the presi-dential campaign trail that year, Obama made his position clear: If elected, he would “provide at least $50 billion by 2013 for the global fight against HIV/AIDS.”
There’s little to explain the shift in President Obama’s priorities. But the shift is clear. The White House has fallen short in following through on its funding promises.
Take the White House’s own program, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Created in 2003, PEPFAR has pro-vided $33 billion in funding thus far, making it the largest effort in history by a single nation to combat a single disease.
PEPFAR is among the indisputable successes of the past decade, and President Obama pledged to increase funding for the program by $1 billion annually if elected. In 2009, though, the White House recommended virtually no increase in funding – $6.7 billion, up from $6.6 billion. As it stands, PEPFAR likely will receive only a nominal increase in 2011.

While campaigning for the presidency, Obama also pledged to dramatically increase America’s support for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, an international public-private partnership that’s leading the global fight against those diseases. However, since Obama came into office, U.S. donations to the Global Fund have flat-lined.
If funding remains at these levels, we could lose much of the progress we’ve made in the battle against HIV/AIDS. Marginal increases in funding and symbolic gestures aren’t enough.
Africa is ground zero in the AIDS crisis. The continent is home to about 90 percent of all HIV-positive patients. But the tide is turning.
Over the past 10 years, the number of AIDS cases in 21 out of 25 of the most affected African countries has decreased. Additionally, modern anti-retroviral therapy (ARV) medicines are extremely effective at preventing parent-to-child HIV transmission.
Normally, the risk of an HIV-positive mother passing on the disease to her child is as much as 45 percent. With intervention, that figure drops to less than 5 percent. Too many African mothers, though, still don’t have access to those drugs. The disease is needlessly getting passed on to children. In 2008, less than half of all HIV-positive pregnant women in Africa received anti-transmission medication.
Drugs also are more widely available. In 2002, only 50,000 HIV-positive Africans had access to life-saving ARVs. The annual cost of an ARV regimen has fallen to less than $100 per patient from $12,000. An estimated 4 million HIV/AIDS patients receive ARV treatments worldwide. The result of this progress? New HIV infections declined by 17 percent from 2001 to 2008, according to a 2010 United Nations report.
Much of this progress is due to the work of PEPFAR and the Global Fund.
Congressional leaders have taken notice of how much ground we’ve gained. After attending the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria, this summer, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), along with 100 of her colleagues, sent a letter to President Obama, urging him to make a three-year, $6 billion commitment to the Global Fund. A pledge of that size would allow the international com-munity to build on past successes and provide more patients with the AIDS medications they desperately need.
Early in October, the Global Fund will meet at the U.N. headquarters in New York, at which donor nations will make their financial pledges. President Obama will have an important opportunity to prove to his allies, detractors and the world community that AIDS funding is still a priority in America. He needs to take the opportunity to revise the White House’s position and increase our country’s commit-ment to the fight against one of the world’s most devastating diseases.

Making the most of opportunity Sacando el máximo de una oportunidad
Kansas City area native Imelda Reyes is part of an exclusive group.
The 19-year-old college sophomore is in the academically rigorous Kauffman Scholars program. What’s more, she’s a member of the inaugural class and among 95 percent of the program’s first 131 students attending postsec-ondary education.
Reyes (no relation to the Reyes family that runs the Reyes Media Group) is pursuing majors in physics and computer science and amassing impressive academic honors. She was president of the National Honor Society in her senior year at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, where she graduated with a 4.0 grade point average, she said. During two semesters at Rockhurst University and since transfer-ring to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Reyes has made the dean’s list.
Reyes is a member of the Society of Physics Students and MECHA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan) at UMKC and Latinos of Tomorrow, a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City student initiative.
“I have always worked hard,” Reyes told Dos Mundos.
Along with taking classes over the summer and carrying 14 credit hours this fall, Reyes works part time as a translator and instruc-tor’s assistant. The namesake and only child of an immigrant from Aguascalientes, Mexico, Reyes grew up bilingually. It helped her master complex subjects, she said.
Reyes is fluent in English and Spanish and feels that her minor in Spanish complements her majors.
“Growing up speaking two languages gave me a big advantage,” Reyes said. “It exposed me to different concepts and ways of thinking

Her part-time salary doesn’t cover tuition costs; it doesn’t have to. The Kauffman Scholars program helps students develop a financial aid plan for college and line up grants and scholarships. For Reyes, whose mother is disabled and homebound, qualify-ing for the prestigious program was the key that opened the door to college.
Reyes is one of a minority in Class 1 who joined Kauffman Scholars in the 10th grade. The program recruits sixth-graders who begin in the seventh grade. Qualifying applicants above the limit are offered a spot on the waiting list to replace students who leave the program for a number of reasons. They might move out of the Kansas City, Mo., or Kansas City, Kan., school districts, where they must attend to be eligible, or the students or their parents find themselves unable to meet their commitments.
Reyes learned about the program from an uncle who saw a newspaper advertisement for Kauffman Scholars, she said.
Reyes is considering a few career options – designing and developing software or pursuing a Ph.D. in physics and one day working at a world-class physics research laboratory. She nurtures her ambitions with a quote by W. Clement Stone, the insurance magnate, motivational speaker and author, and philanthropist. Stone’s father died when he was 3, and Stone started selling newspapers at age 6 to help his mother, a poor dressmaker.
“My life motto is, ‘Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve,’ ” she said.

On Monday (Sept. 27), the Wyandot Center Crisis Clinic started operating in a new
location in the 47th Street Building (1301 N. 47th St.) in Kansas City, Kan. Wyandot Center and PACES, the youth services program, will
continue to offer outpatient therapy services at the 78th and Washington location.
The walk- in clinic moved to 47th Street from 7840 Washington Ave., also in Kansas City, Kan.
The clinic has been relocated to offer consumers increased acces-sibility to psychia-trists serving the Wyandot Center and PACES – and to offer greater convenience with closer proximity to public trans-
portation.“The clinic functions as an emergency service
for persons of all ages experiencing emotional, behavioral or mental health crises,” said Tonja Speer, executive director. “We have crisis case managers, therapists and psychiatrists to help de-escalate the crisis experiences and facilitate arranging needed care for clients.”

Después de meses de escrutinio acerca de su decidido apoyo a la más dura ley de
inmigración del país, la gobernadora de Arizona, Jan Brewer, no tiene ningún deseo de disculparse.
Al contrario, cuando nos reunimos en Phoenix el 17 de septiembre, defendió vehementemente su decisión de firmar la ley que, pese a las limitaciones que le impuso recientemente un juez federal, hace la vida más difícil a los inmigrantes indocumentados.
“No queremos que lo que está pasando en México – 28 mil personas asesinadas en 4 años – se pase a Arizona”, me dijo. “No vamos a dejar que eso ocurra aquí en Arizona y por eso estamos haciendo lo que necesitamos hacer”.
La ley, conocida como SB1070, fue aprobada en abril, aunque en julio un juez federal impidió que Arizona aplicara sus elementos más controversiales un día antes de que entrara en vigor – o sea, una regla que permitiría a agentes policiacos revisar la situación migratoria de una persona al aplicar otras leyes. Arizona ha apelado ese dictamen; y una audiencia está programada para el 1 de noviembre.
La administración del presidente Barack Obama ha asegurado que las fronteras entre México y Estados Unidos son, de hecho, más seguras hoy que en cualquier otro momento de los últimos 20 años, pero Brewer argumenta que la seguridad está en juego – y que sus preocupaciones trascienden las estadísticas sobre criminalidad.
“No creo que estén seguras – nunca lo han estado”, dijo Brewer. “Pueden darnos todos los datos, todas las estadísticas, pero son los hechos en el campo lo que cuenta”.
La información muestra que la criminalidad efectivamente está declinando en Arizona. Los crímenes de violencia se han reducido 15 por ciento entre 2006 y 2009, según el Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Arizona. “No podemos mantener la inmigración ilegal en cuanto a educación, atención médica y encarcelamientos. Y el gobierno federal no nos ayuda para nada en Arizona”, señaló.
Si bien Brewer no ha vacilado en su posición acerca de la inmigración, sí ofreció una disculpa – acerca de sus declaraciones pasadas de que la violencia a lo largo de la frontera ha llevado a que cuerpos decapitados fueran dejados en el desierto de Arizona, una aseveración que fue refutada por los médicos forenses del estado.
“Creo que fue un malentendido ... y me disculpe por eso”, informó. “Y lo hice inmediatamente”.
Pero de lo que no se disculpó es de haber dicho que la “mayoría” de los indocumentados que llegan a Arizona son “mulas” (drug mules) o traficantes de drogas. Le pregunté dónde obtuvo esa información.
“Tenemos muchos videos, tenemos reportes de la gente que vive en la frontera y ciertamente de nuestras fuerzas de la ley ... Si tú cruzas la frontera con los cárteles de las drogas y traes drogas entonces tú eres (a mule drug)”, dijo.
También le pregunté si estaba en favor de deportar a los 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que se cree residen en Estados Unidos.
Evitó dar una respuesta. “No tengo una idea”, refirió. “No tengo esa solución”.
Lo mismo ocurrió cuando le pregunté cómo creía que se veía un inmigrante indocumentado.
“No tengo la menor idea de cómo se ve un inmigrante indocumentado”, respondió. Lo que sí sabe es que “Arizona es el corredor de la inmigración ilegal y de los cárteles de las drogas. Somos la puerta de entrada”. Por eso Brewer promueve una mayor vigilancia a lo largo de la frontera con México.
“Definitivamente, creo que tenemos que construir una valla; y creo que necesitamos más agentes de la Guardia Nacional en la frontera y necesitamos mayor apoyo aéreo”.
Y terminamos la entrevista hablando de política y de sus ya famosos 16 segundos de silencio durante un debate televisivo entre ella y el retador demócrata Terry Goddard, procurador general de Arizona. Esa falla hizo surgir especulaciones acerca de si Brewer – quien era secretaria de Estado de Arizona pero ascendió cuando su predecesora demócrata, Janet Napolitano, fue designada secretaría de Seguridad Interna por Obama – estaba calificada para ser gobernadora.
“Sea que fueran 16 segundos ó 10, fueron los 10 segundos – o los 16 segundos – más largos de mi vida”, comentó. “Sé me congeló el cerebro. Especialistas en debates me han dicho que eso no es inusual ... y a mí me pasó frente a todo el mundo”.

No obstante, meses de debate por críticos acerca de su postura inmigratoria han tenido un costo para ella. “Me duelen que piensen que yo pueda ser racista o una fanática”, dijo.
Los inmigrantes indocumentados en Arizona, desde luego, no votan. Pero su destino depende en buena medida de los resultados de las elecciones el 2 de noviembre. Si gana Brewer, ellos pierden.
PHOENIX – Following months of scrutiny over her resolute support of the nation’s
toughest immigration law, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has no desire to apologize.
On the contrary, when we met Sept. 17 in Phoenix, she fiercely defended her decision to sign the law into effect, which, despite the limitations recently imposed upon it by a federal judge, still makes life harder for undocumented immigrants.
“We don’t want what is happening in Mexico – 28,000 people killed in four years – spilling over,” she told me. “We won’t let it happen here in Arizona. And that’s why we are doing what we need to do.”
The law, known as Senate Bill 1070, was passed in April; however, in July, a federal judge blocked Arizona from enforcing its most controversial elements a day before it went into effect – namely, a rule allowing police officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws. Arizona has appealed the ruling. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 1.
U.S. President Barack Obama’s administra-tion has maintained that the borders between Mexico and the United States are safer than they have been at any point in the past 20 years, but Brewer argues that security is at issue – and that her concerns transcend crime statistics.
“I don’t believe they are secure – they never have been,” Brewer said. “They can give us all the data, all the statistics they want, but it’s the facts on the ground that count.”
The data shows that crime is indeed declin-ing in Arizona. Violent crime has dropped 15 percent between 2006 and 2009, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The same has happened with property crime rates, down 17 percent.
“Crime is down, but we still have a problem,” Brewer said. “I just spoke with the Border Patrol and we (have) still about – I believe he said – 214,000 illegals coming across our border. That’s too many.”
“We cannot sustain the illegal immigration in regards to education, healthcare and incarcera-tion. And the federal government doesn’t help us at all in Arizona,” she said.
While Brewer hasn’t wavered in her position on immigration, she offered one apology – about her statements that violence along the border was leading to beheaded bodies being left in the Ari-zona desert, a claim refuted by state coroners.
“I think it was a misunderstanding ... and I apologized for that,” she said. “And I did that immediately.”
But Brewer stood by her statements that most of the undocumented immigrants that come to Arizona are “drug mules” or traffickers. I asked where she got that information.
“We have a lot of videotape; we have reports from people who live on the border and certainly from our law enforcement.... If you are coming across with the drug cartels and you are hauling drugs, then you are (a drug mule),” she said.
I also asked if she supported deporting the 11 million undocumented immigrants thought to be residing in the United States. She avoided an answer.
“I have no idea,” she said. “I don’t have that solution.”
The same happened when I asked what she thought an undocumented immigrant looked like.
“I don’t have a clue what an undocumented immigrant looks like,” she responded.
What she knows is that “Arizona is the corri-dor for illegal immigration and drug cartels. We are the gateway.” That’s why Brewer promotes greater vigilance along Mexico’s border.
“I think we need to build a fence, and I think we need more National Guard (troops) down at the border, and we need more aerial support,” she said.
We ended the interview discussing her now-famous 16 seconds of silence in September during a televised gubernatorial debate between her and Democratic challenger Terry Goddard, Arizona’s attorney general. The gaffe led to speculation on whether Brewer – who was the secretary of state for Arizona, but moved up when her Democratic predecessor, Janet Napolitano, became Obama’s homeland security secretary – was qualified to be a governor.
“Whether they were 16 seconds or 10, they were the longest 10 seconds or the longest 16 seconds of my life,” Brewer said. “I got a brain freeze. Debate coaches have told me that is not unusual ... and it happened to me in front of the whole wide world.”
“But I’ve got 28 years of solid, good experi-ence of leading the state and I’ll continue to do that,” she said.
State polls suggest Brewer has a clear lead over Goddard, but will there be another debate?
“I don’t know if that is going to take place or not,” answered Brewer.
Nevertheless, months of debate by critics over her immigration stance have taken a toll on Brewer.
“I am hurt that they would think that I would be a racist and a bigot,” she said.
Of course, undocumented immigrants in Arizona don’t vote, but it’s their destiny that depends a great deal on the outcome of the Nov. 2 elections.
If Brewer wins, they lose.
On Sept. 23, seven individuals from four Kansas City area communities in Missouri
questioned Kansas City, Mo., School District board member Crispin Rea during a meeting. They probed for updates on repurposing vacant school buildings, the new Options program, school violence, supplies and undocumented students.
The occasion was a joint meeting of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 9607 and the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations education committees. They meet 5:30-7 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month at the Irene H. Ruiz Branch of the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library.
“It’s not culturally specific,” said Andres Dominguez, who belongs to both organizations. “We have a pretty diverse group that sits around the table engaging in conversation that addresses education concerns as they relate to all young people in the community, not just Latinos.”
The meetings are open to all area residents interested in the quality of local education and fostering youngsters’ academic progress. The number of attendees fluctuates between fewer than 10 to as many as 30 people from both sides of the state line. They represent much of the region’s demographics.
What they have in common, Dominguez said, is a willingness to listen, learn and be involved across boundaries. Dropout rates, reading and math proficiency, district accreditation and leadership, and appropriate programming and curriculum design affect neighborhoods served by both urban and suburban districts.
“All area schools are seeing changing demographics,” Dominguez said. “The working poor and poor immigrants are no longer just in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan. Suburban districts are seeing an influx. If we don’t strategize to deal with it, we’re going to see student test scores drop. Suburban districts don’t want that. They know that parents choose schools by test scores.”
“We need to see and meet the needs in the community,” he added. “No matter where we live, it doesn’t serve any of us to have kids dropping out and unemployable.”
Dominguez co-chairs the meetings with Freda Mendez Smith, president of LULAC Council 9607. Both are well-known community leaders, active in numerous civic organizations. Both participate in other education-focused initiatives.
On Sept. 23, Rea outlined responsibilities of a newly created position the district is advertising. The “repurposer” will oversee the “repurposing” of the district’s roughly 40 vacant school buildings.
The board realizes how important it is to move forward with the project and do it right, Rea said. That includes “really creatively” considering all options and working with neighborhoods.
Responding to questions, Rea discussed the opening of the Options program at Manual Career and Technical Center. It’s an alternative placement program designed to address violence in the district’s other high schools. Classes began Sept. 13.
Some accounts exaggerated the incident at Southwest Early College Campus that prompted Options, Rea said he heard from witnesses. “The straw that broke the camel’s back” was a brawl between parents, not students, he said.
Rea and other board members also are looking into reports about security concerns at other schools and classrooms still needing books and basic supplies. They’re also considering incentives to encourage the growing number of undocumented high school seniors to graduate. Establishing scholarships for postsecondary education is one idea.
“Forty percent of Latino seniors at East High School are undocumented,” Rea said. “It’s something we need deal with.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is known for its treat-ments of pediatric cancer. Patients are treated regardless of legal status or race. Treatments are done based on doc-tors’ referrals. The institution depends mostly on donations to survive.
Angels of Hope is a project created by St. Jude to provide assis-tance to the hospital. People can enroll in it to donate $20 a month for a year. There’s no contract or bill, only a moral commitment.
“We ask people to become an ‘Angel of Hope’ for our chil-dren and help them to go through the process,” said Chris-tine Jepsen, bilingual marketing represen-

Raymer was impressed by the care, support and attention all children received during her 2008 visit to St. Jude.
“It is really impressive to see all the atten-tion provided to the families,” she said. “It feels right to host this radiothon, and I want to continue doing it as long as they let me do it.”
Through support from the community, the radiothon has raised thousands of dol-lars. That money has allowed St. Jude to do cancer research and helped the hospital with its $1.5 million daily maintenance expenses. In addition, the contributions also have helped pay families’ travel expenses, housing and treatment for their children.
“The support that we have received from the Hispanic community has been tremen-dous. We have been able to see what they do. We have been blessed from them and their support,” Jepsen said. “It amazes me that they give you whatever they have to help children. They sacrifice and help.”

La gira estadounidense de El Rey de las Rancheras inicia el día 8 de octubre, sin embargo los preparativos de la misma no podían ir mejor: por demanda popular, dos de sus conciertos en el Gibson Amphitheatre están ya completamente vendidos, y a partir del día de hoy ya se encuentran a la venta las entradas para sus tres nuevas presentaciones en esta misma plaza que se llevaran a cabo los días 19, 20 y 21 de noviembre. Y por si fuera poco, a su gran gira 2010 se suman otros dos importantes motivos de celebración: El lanzamiento de su nuevo disco, 'El Hombre Que Más Te Amó' el día 5 de octubre, y la reciente nominación al GRAMMY Latino en la categoría de Mejor Álbum Ranchero, por su disco 'Necesito de Ti'.
Para conmemorar el cumpleaños 70 del fallecido John Lennon y su impacto en curso en la cultura
popular, se realizará una exhibición de su obra del 8 al 10 de Oct. en el Crown Center en Kansas City, Mo.
Producida por la galería Pacific Edge, con la total cooperación d e l a v iu d ad d e Lennon, Yoko Ono, y su patrimonio, la exposición presentará el estreno de tres dibujos liberados se su patrimonio. popular culture, a major exhibit of his artwork will be on display Oct. 8-10 at Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Produced by the Pacific Edge Gallery, with the full coop-eration of Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, and his estate, the exhibit will feature the premiere of three drawings released by Lennon’s estate. The complete exhibit fea-tures more than 120 serigraphs, signed l ithographs and song lyrics by the legendary Beatle. A portfolio of the 15 “Bag One” litho-graphs, each individ-ually hand-signed by Lennon, also will be on display.
The portfolio has become increasingly rare to find in its entirety. A complete
set is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Admission is free. A catalog will be on sale and Lennon’s artwork will be available for purchase.

El Festival de Cine Internacional de Kansas presentará varias películas

Ahora, en su noveno año, el festival incluye dos cintas que examinan a la población latina del área de Kansas City, entre las que está “Immigration Nation” (Nación de Inmigración), dirigida por el mexicano Esau Meléndez.
Programada para el domingo (3 de Oct.) a las 7 p.m., “Nación de Inmigración” es un documental sobre Elvira Arellano, una inmigrante de México que luchó contra la deportación. Meléndez sigue el viaje de Arellano a lo largo de protestas, marchas y la iglesia donde se refugió.
“Comencé filmando una conferencia de prensa cuando ella anunció su decisión de tomar el santuario”, informó Meléndez en su sitio de Internet. “Posteriormente, una acción me condujo a otra y fui reuniendo pieza por pieza este documental con otras historias de igual importancia”.
Meléndez espera que el film aumente la consciencia sobre los problemas de la inmigración en Estados Unidos.
Otros documentales programados incluyen “Reparando” que será exhibido el 6 de Oct. a las 5:40p.m. Un documental desarrollado en Guatemala, “Reparando” examina a la CIA y al gobierno guatemalteco.

I n t e r n a -tional Film Festival will present var-ious inde-p e n d e n t m o v i e s , s tar t ing F r i d a y (Oct. 1) and con-cluding Oct. 7 at
the Glen-wood Arts Theatre, located at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, Kan.
Now in its ninth year, this year’s festival includes two films that examine the Kansas City area’s Latino
population, including “Immigration Nation,” directed by Mexican Esau Melendez, and “Reparando.”
Scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 3), “Immi-gration Nation” is a documentary about Elvira Arellano, an immigrant from Mexico who fought deportation. Melendez follows Arellano’s jour-ney through protests, marches and the church where she took shelter.
“I began filming a press conference when she announced her decision to take sanctuary,” Melendez stated on his Web site. “Afterwards, one action led me to another, and I went about piecing together this documentary with other stories of equal importance.”
Melendez hopes the film will increase aware-ness about the immigration problem in the United States.
Other documentaries scheduled include “Reparando,” which will be shown at 5:40p.m. Oct. 6. A documentary set in Guatemala, “Repa-rando” examines the CIA and the Guatemalan government.
Other movies scheduled include “My Run,” “Please Remove Your Shoes,” “Kansas City Murder Factory,” “The Tender Hook,” “To Whom It May Concern: Ka Shen’s Journey” and “The Last Survivor.”
The admission to each movie is $8.50 after 6 p.m. Matinees are $6.50 each. Seniors over age 60 pay $6.75. Festival passes are available for $60.

Latino artists are show-casing their art in
the “First Friday” exhibits that are occurring at sev-
eral locations along Southwest Boulevard.
The artists include Mexican native Deborah Moreno, who showcases her art at Dos Mundos in Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside neighborhood. Moreno’s exhibition is based on Mexican culture and roots and includes some paintings of people’s facial expressions.
“I admire figure artists that paint realistically,” Moreno said. “(Jesus) Helguera is one of my favorites because … his compositions that tell a story and because of his choice of colors. In paint-ing these pieces (showcased at the exhibition), I
learned from his style, which is invaluable for me.”
The exhibit also includes r e p r e s e n -t a t i o n s o f Mexican his-tory, such as the Children Heroes battle and Aztec life.
“Of all the paintings, I love the ones that depict the Aztecs,” Moreno said. “To me, they r e p r e s e n t u n b o u n d e d
pride and beauty.” In her artwork, Moreno
tries to express a realistic sense of life. For her, it’s important to continue encouraging future generations who want to pursue careers in painting.
“I’ll tell youth that want to become artists that art is very important for the soul,” Moreno said. “If you paint, you will not be bored or sad.”
Moreno, who admires the work Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, along with Helguera, has drawn since she was 8 years old because her parents started teaching her.
H e r inspiration comes from her continuous fascination with the human body. Her favorite paintings include those of people and people’s faces.
Moreno works at the Crown Center Shops in Kansas City, Mo., drawing cartoons. In addition, she sells her artwork.

las exhibiciones “First Friday” que están sucediendo en varios locales a lo largo del Southwest Boulevard.

“De todas las p i n t u r a s , m e encanta una que muestra a los aztecas”, refirió. “Para mí, ellos r e p r e s e n t a n un o rgu l lo y una belleza sin límites”.
En su obra de arte, ella trata de expresar un sentido realista de la vida. Para ella, es importante seguir alentando a generaciones futuras que deseen seguir carreras en la pintura.
“Yo le digo a los jóvenes que desean convertirse en artistas que el arte es muy importante para el alma”, comentó. “Si pintas, no estarás aburrido o triste”.
Deborah--quien admira la obra de Diego Rivera y David Alfaro Siqueiros, junto con Helguera--ha pintado desde que tenía 8 años porque sus padres empezaron a enseñarle. Su inspiración proviene de su continua fascinación por el cuerpo humano. Sus pinturas favoritas incluyen aquellas de personas y las caras de éstas.
Ella trabaja en tiendas del Crown Center en Kansas City, Mo., dibujando caricaturas. Además, vende sus obras.

known as the “lovebug” that flourishes along the Gulf of Mexico. I learned about these tiny crea-tures recently on a trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast. What amazed me most wasn’t their sheer numbers, but the realization that all of them were flying around in pairs.
A friend who lives there told me that “lovebugs” choose a partner when they’re born – and from then on, they fly, eat and sleep together for
the rest of their lives, until the male dies. Even after that, the female carries his body around until her death.
When I heard that, I got goosebumps. How romantic!
We have much to learn from them, I thought. It’s easy to throw in the towel when a relation-ship grows stale and it seems like you’re fighting all the time. For many, the easy solution is to find a new partner. But what defines a healthy relationship isn’t an absence of problems, but rather, the ability of both partners to overcome their obstacles together.
To ensure your relationship stays in good shape, you must devote time to your partner. Anything that’s abandoned will deteriorate or die eventually. Don’t let your love die of neglect. A flower can’t live without water, and a relation-ship can’t survive without love and dedication. Make sure that every day, no matter how busy you are, you set aside a few minutes to call your partner or send a quick text message that says, “I love you.”
When the going gets tough, support each other! If your honey has lost his job, instead of focusing on the lost income, think about how you can help him with his search for new employment.
It doesn’t matter what challenges you’re facing. With love, anything is possible!
I don’t mean you should put up with every-thing. Sometimes, it’s best to separate, especially when you’re dealing with addictions, infidelity or abuse. But if your problems aren’t that serious and there’s still affection, then it’s worth it to try and make the effort to fly together forever.
We can learn from the lovebugs: When they encounter bad weather and get knocked around by strong winds, instead of letting go of their partner, they cling together more tightly than ever.
If you’re going through a rough time in your relationship, instead of moving further apart, pull your partner closer. Together, you can weather the storm. Remember, united we stand!

la costa del golfo de México existen unos insectos que se llaman “insectos de amor” o mejor conocidos en inglés como “lovebugs”. Me encontré con estas criaturas por primera vez en un viaje que hice hace unos días a la costa oeste de la Florida. Lo que me sorprendió no fue la cantidad de ellos que estaban en el aire, sino que al observarlos me di cuenta que todos volaban emparejados. Una amiga, residente de este pueblo, me contó que los “lovebugs” escogen una pareja cuando nacen y desde ese momento vuelan, comen, caminan y duermen juntos por el resto de sus vidas hasta que el macho muere. Incluso después de su muerte la hembra lleva consigo el cuerpo de su pareja hasta que ella también muere.
Cuando escuché la historia de estos animalitos se me erizó la piel y pensé: “!qué románticos! deberíamos aprender de ellos”. Son pocas las parejas determinadas a estar juntos para siempre. Hoy día es fácil darse por vencido cuando una relación cae en la monotonía y los desacuerdos predominan. La solución para muchos, cuando los problemas aparecen, es buscar a otra persona. Pero lo que define a una relación saludable no es la falta de problemas, sino la capacidad de ambos para superar obstáculos.
Para que tu relación permanezca saludable, tienes que dedicarle tiempo a tu pareja. Cualquier cosa que es abandonada se deteriora o muere. No dejes que tu amor muera por falta de atención. Una flor no puede vivir sin agua igual que una relación no puede sobrevivir sin dedicación y amor. Asegúrate que todos los días, aunque estés muy ocupado, saques por los menos unos minutos para llamar a tu pareja por teléfono o mandarle un mensaje de texto diciendo “te amo”.
En tiempos difíciles, ¡apóyense! Si tu amorcito perdió el trabajo, en vez de pensar que ahora no tendrá dinero para aportar al hogar, piensa en qué puedes hacer para ayudarlo a buscar un nuevo empleo.
No importa los retos que enfrentes, si hay amor ¡todo se puede!. Tampoco estoy diciendo que hay que aguantarlo todo. Hay situaciones en las que es mejor separarte especialmente cuando tienes que lidiar con vicios, infidelidades o abusos. Pero si tu relación no enfrenta asuntos graves como estos, y todavía hay cariño, vale la pena volar juntos para siempre. Aprendamos de los “lovebugs”, cuando estos insectos enfrentan mal tiempo y el viento los azota, en vez de soltar a su compañero, se aferran con más fuerza el uno al otro.
Si estás pasando por un momento difícil en tu relación en vez de alejarte, entrelázate con tu pareja. Juntos pueden enfrentar tempestad. Recuerda, ¡en la unión está la fuerza!

Las finales de la liga del Padrino terminaron el pasado domingo con dos muy emocionantes que dejaron a dos equipos jarochos
campeones en dos divisiones diferentes.La de la división intermedia fue la más llamativa, donde
Galácticos de Veracruz se enfrentó al invicto Juventus Tx, en una
final veracruzana que llenó los campos con gente que vino a apoyar a su equipo favorito y ver buen fútbol.
El partido comenzó muy frío, con poca actividad, donde ni Juventus ni Galácticos querían arriesgarse y apostar. Tuvo que llegar Toño Díaz—un defensa de Juventus—en un desborde por la derecha para abrir el marcador y así explotar el fútbol ofensivo que se le conoce a ambas escuadras.
En la segunda mitad, Galácticos hizo fuertes movimientos poniendo en la portería a Manny “el Gato” y al veterano “Pato” en la derecha. Hecho que le dio seguridad a la defensa y efectividad en la ofensiva y cambios que dieron resultado a 15 minutos del final con el empate que duraría incluso hasta lo largo de los tiempos extras.
En los tiempos extra, tanto Juventus Tx como Galácticos jugaron a cuidar el marcador, apostando por los penales donde Galácticos fue mejor gracias a la buena actuación del portero que le tapo dos penales a Juventus Tx; mientras que los veracruzanos sólo fallaron uno.
El campeonato le cayó como anillo al dedo a Galácticos de Veracruz, quien era conocido como el eterno tercer lugar porque
siempre era eliminado en semifinales.Juventus Tx por su parte, perdió la final, pero se fue con el
honor de no haber perdido un solo partido en tiempo regular a lo largo de la temporada, ya que la final la perdió en la tanda de penales.
LOS TERCEROS LUGARES
Los partidos por el tercer lugar de ambas divisiones también fueron bastante emocionantes, sobre todo en la segunda división donde Hamburguesas los Compas venció a Panthers en penales con una gran actuación de su guardameta que paró 2 penales, tras mantener su portería 0 a 0 a lo largo de 80 minutos.
Bonito Michoacán Jr. se llevó el tercer puesto en la división intermedia, tras vencer 2 a 0 a Real Acula.
GRAN FINAL PRÓXIMO DOMINGO
La gran final de la division mayor de la liga El Padrino Premier Soccer League y la liga Iberolatina será el próximo domingo entre Manuel Rentería/Quinto Elemento y Barilleros—dos equipos de gran renombre dentro del fútbol local.
Manuel Rentería/Quinto Elemento es un equipo conocido por su juego ofensivo; además cuenta con gran definición y mucha
garra.Barilleros es un equipo
mediático; tiene varias años buscando el título liguero pero no se le ha dado. En esta final llega con mucha ventaja; no sólo cuenta con jugadores con talento ,sino que tambien saben jugar en equipo.
PREVIO: Barilleros y Manuel Rentería/Quinto Elemento ya se enfrentaron en una ocasión durante la temporada regular. En aquel entonces, Barilleros goleó 4–1 a su contrincante y para lastimar más a sus rivales, sacó un desplegado avisando el triunfo—hecho que molestó a los directivos del equipo rival.
El partido será transmitido en La GranD 1340AM y promete ser emocionante.

a di�erent name and coach.For three seasons, the Kansas City Brigade played in the
Arena Football League (AFL), suspending operations in late 2008, when the league suspended operations.
In March 2011, the Kansas City franchise will begin play-ing in the Sprint Center, with a nickname to be determined. The league is �nalizing the 2011 schedule.
Danton Barto will be the new coach.
Kevin Porter, the team’s general manager and the Brigade’s head coach for three seasons, picked Barto because he wanted someone with experience and success in the AFL.
“We are extremely excited to have Danton Barto as the new head coach here in Kansas City,” Porter said. “He is a proven winner and brings with him the values and intangibles we are looking for to represent Kansas City in the new AFL. We are lucky to have him.”
Barto has established himself as one of the top coaches in arenafootball2 (af2) history. During his career, he has won an ArenaCup title and been named the af2 Coach of the Year.
As a professional player, Barto played in the AFL and the Canadian Football League. From 1990 to 1993 at the University of Memphis, Barto became the only player in school history to be a three-time All-American. He still holds the school record for career tackles with 473. In
Arena football returning to KC 2008, he was inducted into the University of Memphis M Club Hall of Fame.
“I am excited about the opportunity to coach in Kansas City,” Barto said. “I believe that the Kansas City fans are the best in football, and we will win some games with their help.”

TEAM TO HOLD OPEN TRYOUTSKansas City’s Arena Football League team has set
its �rst open tryout date for the upcoming 2011 season.
Tryouts will begin at 10 a.m. (registration at 9) for line-men, fullbacks and linebackers and at 11 a.m. (registration at 10) for receivers, defensive backs, running backs and quarterbacks. Both tryouts will be held Oct. 10 in the Kansas City SoccerDome, located at 5909 Equitable Road in Kansas City, Mo.
There will be no kicking tryout.Prospects must be age 18 by Oct. 10 and have completed
high school football eligibility to participate.
Prospects will be divided into two groups. The format will consist of various physical tests, including the vertical jump, shuttle run, 40-yard dash and broad jump. Participants will be timed and measured in each test.
After an evaluation of each participant’s times and scores, the group will be reduced to a smaller group of indi-viduals who’ll be asked to participate in select physical drills. Another evaluation will leave the remaining prospectus to participate in Arena Football-related skill drills.
There won’t be any contact drills.General Manager Kevin Porter, coach Danton Barto and
the team sta� will attend the tryout to assist potential players. Prospects that impress them will be invited to an elite workout evaluating their football skills.
Prospects can download a registration form at www.kcarenafootball.com to bring in on the day of the tryout or preregister by faxing the form to (913) 381-2782. The entry fee is $50. On tryout day, prospects may pay with cash or money orders made out to “Kansas City Arena League Team.”
Tryouts will be held on an indoor surface, so players should dress accordingly. Players should wear shirts, shorts and grass/turf cleats.

Break timeChiefs ready for week o� before playing Colts
The Kansas City Chiefs are ready for a break.
After improving to 3-0 with their 31-10 thumping of the San Francisco 49ers Sunday (Sept. 26) at Arrowhead Stadium to help commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), the Chiefs have a week o� before playing the defending AFC champion Indianapolis Colts. According to Chiefs coach Todd Haley, they need it.
“We’re three games into the �rst quarter of the season, trying like heck to try to make that transition from a not-so-good team into a good team, sooner rather than later,” Haley said during Sunday’s postgame press conference. “But we’re by no means there, so a bye week for this group of guys … will be a great opportunity for us to … try to continue to make strides.”
Rookie tight end Tony Moeaki, who caught four passes for 44 yards and a touchdown Sunday, said the younger players should use the time to make sure they “continue to have a rhythm out there” and “take care of details.” Having a week o� will be a change of pace for Moeaki, a third-round draft pick from the University of Iowa, a Big 10 Conference a�liate.
“The Big 10 plays straight through (the season),” he said.
Defensively, Kansas City must use the time to prepare for Indianapolis’ potent o�ense, which the Chiefs will face Oct. 10 in Indianapolis, said Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers, who had three pass defenses, two tackles and an interception Sunday.
“(Colts quarterback) Peyton Manning makes a lot of checks (play changes) at the line (of scrimmage), he has great (pass) protection,” Flowers said. “So any little tendency we can get (from watching game tape) or if we see any weakness in the o�ense, we’ve got to take heed of it now.”
Should the Chiefs defeat Indianapolis – and continue to win – the speculation that has begun in the national sports media about Kansas City making the playo�s will intensify. But according to Flowers, no one on the team is discussing the postseason yet.
“We’re just staying humble, staying focused,” he said.

Aggies can’t stop KU’s o�ense
LAWRENCE, Kan. – To New Mexico State University senior linebacker Frank Padilla, the Aggies had
the right defensive game plan to defeat the University of Kansas (KU).
The problem was, they didn’t execute it – and as a result, the Jayhawks rolled past the Aggies 42-16 when the teams met Sept. 25 at Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium.
“Coaches can’t play,” said Padilla, who’s of Mexican and Italian descent. “We do.”
That stated, New Mexico State’s defense “played as a unit,” according to Padilla, who made seven tackles, including four solo tackles.
“We came up short,” he said.The reason the Aggies “came up short” was because of
KU’s o�ensive line, according to Jayhawks running back D.J. Beshears, who tallied 40 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and returned a kicko� 96 yards for a �rst-quarter touchdown.
“They really played their butts o� tonight,” Beshears said after the non-conference win. “They blocked well.
They protected our quarterback. And they just made holes for me (to run through) – and the other running backs.”
Beshears also felt that the Jayhawks (2-2) possessed cohesiveness, something they’ll need Saturday (Oct. 2), when they begin Big 12 Conference play at Baylor University.
“I think, if we all come together and play as a team and just go out there and give it our all, (then) we’ll be good (to go) for … conference play,” he said.
For New Mexico State coach DeWayne Walker, facing KU was a reminder that the Aggies (0-3) must improve as
they enter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play. The Aggies will open their WAC schedule Saturday by hosting undefeated Boise State University.
Padilla said the pace of the KU game will help the Aggies prepare for Boise State’s o�ense.
“Boise State has a good o�ense,” he said. “They’re (an) explosive o�ense.”
Padilla also said the Aggies should “go back and hit the drawing board” as they prepare for their WAC schedule.
“We’re growing as a team,” he said. “(We’ve) got a lot of young guys playing.”

WIZARDS CAEN ANTE DALLAS
Dallas llegó a Kansas City para enfrentarse a unos Kansas City Wizards que 4 días antes habían logrado un dramático triunfo de 4-3 sobre Houston Dynamo—luego de ir perdiendo 3 a 1 al medio tiempo. Pero la magia hechicera no funcionó en esta ocasión y a los 12 minutos de partido ya estaban abajo 2 a 0.
El primer gol cayó a los cuatros minutos de juego, cuando en las afueras del área David Ferreira puso el balón a la espalda de los defensores para que el hondureño Marvin Chávez marcara el primero de la noche con una volea al primer palo del arquero Jimmy Nielsen.
Ocho minutos después, el cuadro texano aumentó su ventaja.con un tiro cruzado inatajable de Milton Rodríguez.
Kansas City buscó el empate y el entrenador Peter Vermes hizo 2 cambios ofensivos—sacó al medio de contención Auvray y metió a Josh Wolff al minuto 30; al medio tiempo, Teal Bunbury reemplazó a Diop.
El gol de los Wizards llegó al minuto 57, lo anotó el inglés Ryan Smith, que recibió un pase de Josh Wolff y venció al guardameta argentino Dario Sala.
Abajo en el marcador 2 a 1, los Wizards optaron por atacar mientras Dallas lo hizo por defender y contragolpear.
Dallas anotó el tercero y último gol gracias a Cunningham (quien reemplazó a Rodríguez al medio tiempo) a ocho minutos del final.

JAGUARES BICAMPEÓNDespués del partido entre los Kansas City Wizards
y Dallas FC, el estadio CommunityAmerica fue testigo de la final de la Conferencia Central del Norte de la NSSL (National Star Soccer League) entre el campeón KC Jaguares FC y Emporia Pumas FC.
El delantero Jonni Ruedas anotó los 2 goles que le dieron la victoria a Jaguares. El primero tras desviar un tiro de larga distancia de la defensa; mientras el segundo cayó en tiempo reglamentario tras un desborde del habilidoso delantero conocido por su frialdad al momento de definir.
Emporia buscó el arco rival en varias ocasiones. A pesar de que al incio del partido le anularon erróneamente un gol por fuera de juego, el guardameta de Jaguares, Iván, cumplió bien bajo los tres palos y no permitió que le perforaran la portería.
La victoria de 2 a 0 (4-3 en el global) de KC Jaguares sobre Emporia Pumas fue la segunda que logra dicho equipo de forma consecutiva en dicha conferencia.
En el duelo de la final de la temporada anterior, Jaguares venció 4-3 a Siouxland United para alcanzar el campeonato.
“No fue fácil porque perdimos el primer partido por 3-2 y aunque con el 1-0 forzábamos el tiempo extra, la verdad mis jugadores sacaron la casta y coraje para dar este primer paso. La meta ahora es alcanzar el bicampeonato en la National Star Soccer League”, indicó jubiloso el entrenador Arturo Valerio, oriundo de Córdoba, Veracruz. “Tenemos listo nuestro equipo base, tenemos gente de experiencia y a los mejores
jugadores de la liga a Todo Deporte. Vamos a enfrentar la siguiente fase con mucha confianza y determinación de alcanzar el bicampeonato”.
El Final Four de la NSSL está previsto para el 29 y 30 de octubre y los otros participantes serán los monarcas de la otra conferencia Provo, Utah del Northwest, los Galaxticos de South Central y los Dorados de Hayward, California.
“Ser campeones por 2 años consecutivos es increíble”, comentó el presidente de los KC Jaguars FC Gilberto Rizo, tras la victoria. “Ésta es una liga muy competitiva y este equipo ha recorrido un largo camino para estar aquí”.
“Regresar a defender el título será un reto, pero tenemos jugadores con casta y coraje de campeones que han sabido reaccionar en el momento oportuno. Todos saben que debemos poner un esfuerzo extra porque nos jugaran a morir”, expresó por su parte Raquel Rizo, fundadora de los Jaguares.
La NSSL fue fundada en el 2007 y según información de su página de Internet (www.nationalstarsoccerleague.com), es una organización profesional de fútbol dentro de Estados Unidos afiliada a la US Soccer, USASA y CONCACAF.
El objetivo de la liga es brindarle la oportunidad a jugadores amateur de dar el siguiente paso. Cuenta con 3 divisiones de varones—la primera que es libre; la segunda es U-23 y la tercera U-18. Además cuenta con una división femenil y una infantil. Tiene 5 conferencias alrededor del país y se espera la adición de 3 divisiones más en el 2011.
“Queremos el apoyo de la comunidad hispana, pero sobre que vean a estos jóvenes representantes de Kansas City que ponen todo en cada partido. A las críticas, que siempre existen, estoy ciego y mudo cuando son infundadas y sólo dejo que nuestro trabajo hable por si mismo”, concluyó Gilberto, quien trabaja de cerca con el comisionado Daniel Cortez.

Los Rayados del Monterrey no sólo cumplen una excelente actuación en el fútbol mexicano, sino que se convierten en el primer equipo en clasificar a la segunda ronda de la CONCACHAMPIONS con un triunfo de 3-2 sobre Seattle Sounders.

LAMENTABLEPor último, la novela de la selección mexicana continuó con una carta enviada por Rafael Márquez
a la FMF solicitando el cese de Néstor de la Torre como Director de las selecciones nacionales, por haber ventilado públicamente la fiesta de los seleccionados en Monterrey, Nuevo León.
Lamentable resulta ahora que, cuando alguien quiere imponer disciplina, los seleccionados se unen para seguir en la impunidad. Entonces, hay que aplaudir su desfachatez y cinismo. Se olvidan que son figuras públicas y que dentro del deporte, para muchos son ídolos a seguir.
