400m Relay & Sean Bernstein win National TitlesBernstein and Danielle Kennedy earn Athlete of the Year

The SUNY Oneonta athletics department held its 24th annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 7th to honor the outstanding accomplishments of its student athletes during this past year. Nearly 500 people attended the reception and ceremony held in the Hunt Union Ballroom on campus.

During the ceremony, the athletics department honored its team Most Valuable Players along with recognizing the accomplishments of its student athletes in nine major categories that include academic, athletic, outstanding single performances and service to the department and campus.

Athletes of the YearSenior Sean Bernstein and junior Danielle Kennedy earned Athlete of the Year honors. Bernstein is a national champion sprinter for the track & field program while Kennedy is the top distance runner for the cross country and track & field teams.

Bernstein picked up where he left off from last year when he was a multiple-time SUNYAC champion and outdoor national champion. During the

indoor season, he won two individual events and one relay in leading the men’s team to its first ever conference title. He went on to finish second in the 60m dash at the NCAA Division III championships to earn All-American honors.

The SUNY Oneonta men’s track & field team left a lasting impression at the 2013 NCAA Div. III championships at Roger Harring Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse as they left the “cheese head” state with plenty of hardware for its efforts during the three-day event.

As a team, the Red Dragons claimed sixth place, scoring 29 points, which was the best showing by the men in its history. The team championship went to the hosts as they scored 66 points.

USILA All-American Honorable MentionDiv. III North/South All-Star Game

Weber is a dual major in mathematics and geography and carries a 3.73 GPA. He is a school record holder as part of both the indoor and outdoor 4x800m relays.

Sheehan is a dual major in adolescent education and mathematics with a 3.67 GPA. She is a member of the volleyball team where she played in all 34 matches last fall. She has been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Etta Sigma national honor societies.

Doxtader has earned a 3.77 GPA as a psychology major with a minor in biology. She started every game for the soccer team last fall and helped lead them to a second place finish during the regular season. She was named to the Mayor’s Cup All-Tournament Team and was a Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team selection.

G. Hal Chase Memorial AwardThis year’s recipients of the G. Hal Chase Memorial Awards were senior Scott Bertoldo of the swimming & diving team and sophomore Nicole Brieva of the softball team.

The award is in honor of G. Hal Chase, who served as the Athletics Director at the college and Chair of the Physical Education Department for over 40 years. The award recognizes a student athlete’s loyalty, leadership, dedication and contributions to the overall success of the athletics program.

Bertoldo has been a member of the swimming & diving team for four years and, this past winter, served as one of the team captains.

Bertoldo is a LEAD participant on campus and is the secretary for the biology honor society of Beta Beta Beta. The President for SAAC this year, he has been involved in campus wide and in the community with various service projects. He spearheaded the athletics department involvement in the CANstruction event that raised money for canned goods that were donated to various food pantries in Otsego county.

Brieva is a member of the softball team and is an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. This past fall she served as an intern with Career Athletes, which is a career networking website for those individuals who are current athletes and those individuals who are currently involved in the sports industry at all levels.

Brieva’s largest undertaking of the year was organizing the Athletes vs. Greek Life Olympics, which raised over $800 for Special Olympics.

Outstanding Single Performance AwardWomen’s lacrosse player, Caroline Tulley and

swimmer Alex Miller and soccer player Dan DeBottis took the honors of the female and male Outstanding Single Performance Awards respectively.

Tulley’s performance came in a playoff spot clinching game against Oswego in the final game of the regular season. In a win and your in contest for both teams, Tulley came up with five goals and four assists to lead Oneonta to a 20-13 victory that allowed the Red Dragons to secure the final spot in the SUNYAC tournament.

Miller’s performance came in winning the 200-yard backstroke at the SUNYAC championship meet, setting a conference record in the process. It was one of Miller’s three SUNYAC titles that he won during the championships, which led to him being selected as the SUNYAC Swimmer of the Meet.

DeBottis came up huge in a 0-0 tie last fall at perennial national contender and eventual 2012 NCAA Division III national champion Messiah. DeBottis made nine saves in the contest to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard for 110 minutes.

Rounding out the awards for the year, the department recognizes the male and female team with the highest GPA as recipients of the Jay Pawa Team Academic Award. This year the men’s and women’s cross country teams were recognized for overall academic excellence.

At the NCAA championships, Bernstein won two national titles to add to the one he won in 2012. His performance earned him the Outstanding Male Track Athlete of the championship as well as the National Male Track Athlete of the Year honor.

Kennedy has had a breakout year for the cross country and track & field teams. Last fall she finished third at the conference championship meet,

which tied the best finish ever for an Oneonta female. It was the second straight year she finished in the top-5 at the SUNYAC championship meet.

During the indoor track & field season she captured the 3000m SUNYAC title. She also set school records in the 3000m and 5000m indoors and the 5000m and 10000m outdoors.

Dr. Joseph Heissan ’63 Senior Achievement AwardThe Dr. Joseph Heissan ’63 Senior Achievement Award is named in honor of Dr. Heissan, who was a two-sport standout athlete while he attended the college. The award goes to a senior who, was a four-year varsity athlete, has legitimate athletic and academic credentials and showed exemplary leadership, character and work ethic while a varsity

athlete.

This year’s recipients were Kacy Boburka of the volleyball and track & field teams and Eric Fortier of the men’s soccer team.

Boburka will leave an indelible mark on both the volleyball and track & field programs. She was a four-time All-Conference selection in volleyball while setting the career record for kills. She also holds the single match record for kills and was an honorable mention All-Region selection last fall.

As a track & field athlete, Boburka is an All-American high jumper, SUNYAC champion in multiple events and school record holder in the outdoor heptathlon.

In the classroom, Boburka has excelled as well and has been included on the SUNYAC All-Academic ,]Team and Commissioner’s List during her career. In the spring of 2012, she was inducted into the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma.

Fortier was a four-year standout for the men’s soccer program. He was the 2011 SUNYAC Player of the Year and an All-American, as the men’s soccer team played in the NCAA Division III national semifinals. Last fall, Fortier was a first team All-Conference selection, as Oneonta won its second straight conference championship.

Fortier is majoring in Physics and is already headed to a position as a Junior Engineering Technician at Central Hudson Gas and Electric after graduation.

Fred Puritz First-Year Athlete of the Year AwardWrestler Shaun Gillen and swimmer Lauren Zentko were selected as the first-year athletes of the year. Both made immediate impacts on their respective squads in their first seasons.

In only her first season, Zentko has already etched her name into the record books for the women’s program. During her rookie season, she set marks in the 500, 1000 and 1650-yard freestyle events. She is also part of the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay foursomes that set program records as well.

At the SUNYAC championships, Zentko earned medalist honors in the 1650 freestyle when she placed third. Her finish in the event earned her second team All-Conference honors.

Gillen established himself as the starter for years to come at 165 lbs. after putting together a 33-17 rookie season for the Red Dragons. Along the way, he won the Will Abel title in his weight class while earning All-State, All-ECWC and All-Region honors. His third place finish at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional qualifier earned him an NCAA championship berth. His outstanding season earned him selection to the d3wrestle.com All-Freshmen Team, which is an honor that only goes to 10 wrestlers from Division III.

Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the YearThis year’s male and female Scholar Athlete of the Year awards went to senior Nate Weber of the cross country and track & field teams and Katie Sheehan and Lindsey Doxtader of the volleyball and soccer teams respectively.

SUNYAC Spring Academic HonorsSUNY Oneonta graduate, Eric Theiss ’09, was featured this spring on the NCAA Division III homepage highlighting his most recent posi-tion as “the Rally Squirrel.”

Theiss is currently working for the Lake Elsinore Storm, which is a minor league affili-ate of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball. Theiss is employed as the Assistant Director of Media Relations for the Storm.

He performs his “duties” as the world’s fastest squirrel about 70 times per season and his conquest was highlight-ed on ESPN Top-10 plays and on MLB Network.

FREDONIA, N.Y.—State University of New York Athletic Confer-ence Commissioner, Azure Davey, announced today the confer-ence’s All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List for the spring, 2013 season. SUNY Oneonta had a total of 123 student athletes recognized including 51 named to the Commissioner’s List.

Qualifications for the All-Academic Team:1. Must be a varsity Athlete2. Must have completed the entire season3. Must have a minimum 3.3 grade point average for the semester in which they competed

Qualifications for the Commissioner’s List:1. Must be a varsity Athlete2. Must have completed the entire season3. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 based on three semesters at the institution. (Does not have to be consecutive semesters)
