Funding a Margin of Excellence with Scholarships
East Carolina University
Chancellorfrom the
Attracting the best students—and ensuring access to an East Carolina University education—rank among our highest priorities at ECU.
For many of our students, the importance of scholarships and financial aid cannot be overstated. Today’s shifting economy poses a significant challenge, but alumni and friends of the university can turn the dream of an excellent, affordable education into reality through scholarship aid.
Whether designated merit-based or need-based, for entering freshmen or continuing students, for undergraduates or graduate students, scholarships of all kinds help us attract and retain the most able
students, greatly enriching the overall campus community and bringing about even more positive results.
Now is the time to make a life changing difference with a gift to support ECU scholarships.
Support our rising generation. Help change lives for the better. Create a better learning environment. Set an example. And make a gift that lasts.
Thank you for your generosity. Steve BallardChancellorEast Carolina University

Investing in Our Students is an Investmentin North Carolina
“I give an annual scholarship because I received one of these scholarships when it was much needed during my time at ECU. East Carolina University and the College of Business allowed me to better myself and my career. I want to give back so that I can make a difference for another student who needs help. I have had a very rewarding 12 years with BB&T and the future is bright. I owe much of this success to my time at ECU and the donors who invested in my education.” — Tommy Price4
Levels of SupportScholarships can be supported through endowments or annual gifts.
Endowed funds are never spent. Instead, they’re invested. Earnings from these investments provide support for student scholarships in perpetuity. This means that each gift designated for an endowment provides permanent financial support. When you create an endowed fund, you have the opportunity to create a legacy by naming the endowment with your name or the name of a person you wish to honor. To create an endowment, a minimum gift of $25,000 is needed to provide a scholarship for deserving students.
Annually funded scholarships are those that are funded each year. The impact of the annual scholarship is immediate, meaning the scholarship recipient is selected in the year the funds are received. Gifts made to annual scholarships are not invested, and do not earn additional income. An annual gift of at least $1,000 is needed to provide a scholarship for deserving students.

“You will never fully understand how much this scholarship means to both my family and me. The amount of pride this has instilled in my parents has been one of the greatest rewards for me as a daughter. Throughout the rest of my journey, I plan to do nothing less than allow that pride to grow.” — Ashley Montaquila
East Carolina University is seeking funding for the creation of new endowed or annually funded scholarships. Scholarships help ECU to recruit and retain academically deserving and financially disadvantaged students. Currently, there are over 21,000 undergraduate students at ECU. EC Scholars
“The EC Scholars award has provided me with outstanding opportunities and an education that is second to none. By participating in rigorous honors seminars, a research internship, and scholastic co-curricular activities, I have developed as a student and as a leader. A recent study abroad experience offered intuitive learning in another culture, an opportunity that was attainable through my EC Scholars award. Thank you for your generous support of the EC Scholars Program.” — Ryan Baucom EC Scholar, Class of 2015
Established in 1998, the EC Scholars program, housed in the Honors College, is our flagship merit-based scholarship program that attracts high-ability students to East Carolina University. The EC Scholar award is offered to the best of our entering freshman class. This is the most prestigious scholarship offered at East Carolina. EC Scholars exhibit outstanding academic performance, engagement in the community, and effective leadership skills. The amount awarded to scholarship recipients is $40,000 ($5,000 per semester for eight continuous semesters). In addition, EC Scholars are provided with a $5,000 stipend to support their required study-abroad experience. Currently, ECU offers 20 EC Scholars awards each year. The goal is to not only increase the number of awards but also to raise the dollar amount given. This will be necessary to increase our competitive position among other merit scholarship programs.

Thank you for your support and generosity. The impact this award will have on helping me achieve my educational goals is indescribable.” — Heather Griffin
The Access Scholarship program provides a unique opportunity to assist a greatly deserving group of young people-those with both demonstrated financial need and proven academic potential. The annual award of $5,000 has proven in some cases to make the difference in whether or not a student and his or her family can afford a college education. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students. Recipients must complete at least 20 hours of volunteer service each year through East Carolina’s Volunteer and Service-Learning Center. Our goal is to increase the number of awards to at least 100 and to endow the program.

Recruitment Scholarships
“It is difficult to juggle a full-time school schedule, work, and activities in the community. It is unbelievably rewarding to receive the recognition for my work, as well as the alleviation of some of the financial burden on my education, especially since I rely primarily on student loans. I appreciate your help and generosity more than you can imagine.” — Kevin Hale
“I thank you very much for the opportunities you have given me through this scholarship and the doors you have opened. The funds will allow me to continue to excel in school and help me focus on my future career…debt free.” — Alexandria Anneheim
Recruitment Scholarships are recurring annual awards of $3,000 designed to serve as a tool to attract the best high school seniors and transfer students to East Carolina University. As we strive to be a leader in higher education, it is crucial that we improve on becoming an enticing option for future students.
