Our SOuth BrOnx neighBOrhOOd
is like many in New York — people trying to gain
a foothold in the American mainstream. They face
tough challenges. First-generation immigrants,
minorities, single-parent families, individuals on
their second or third chance who know it may
be their last. They come to East Side House
because our programs help them develop the
skills and capabilities they need to get ahead.
Our programs focus on basic learning, GEd and
college preparation, adult education, technology
skills and leadership training. Our staff emphasizes
self-reliance, self-respect and self-determination.
The results people achieve with the help we
provide — in terms of degrees, jobs, college
placement, making the most of their chance —
demonstrates how effective we are.

A long-Term Focus on Success
Founded in 1891 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, East
Side House moved to the South Bronx in 1963. We have
expanded our programming to serve
residents of the surrounding community
and the Inwood section of Manhattan.
How do we support and grow our
programs over time so that they become
a true community resource year-in and
year-out? We monitor participation and
graduation rates, and track the progress
of East Side House participants as they
move on through life. We’ve changed
and adapted many times over the last
120 years, but we always keep one eye
focused on the need to stay true to our
mission now and in the years ahead.

am today: a sophisticated and determined
young lady. I have learned that nothing is

are always there to lend a helping hand
in my mission. I am at my dream school,
Binghamton University, because of all of the
programs, outlets, and opportunities that East Side House has
provided me with! For the future, I want to be a humanitarian

open the doors that have been opened for me.”
