Denis Mukwege 2018 Joint Nobel Peace Prize Recipient
For his efforts to end sexual
violence as a weapon of war, the Nobel Peace Prize has been
awarded to Dr. Denis Muwege, a gynecologist and surgeon from
the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Dr. Mukwege graduated from the University of Burundi, a country in East Africa, in 1983. First working
as a pediatrician, the lack of proper prenatal care convinced
him to return to medical school to study obstetrics and gynecology.
He completed his medical residency in 1989 in France and established the Panzi Hospital in
Bukavu, DRC in 1999.
The hospital has treated more than 85,000 patients suffering from complex gynecological
damage with an estimated 60% stemming from sexual violence. Most of his patients come from
conflict zones requiring Dr. Mukwege perform reconstructive
surgery.
Speaking to the United Nations in 2012, Dr. Mukwege spoke out
against mass sexual violence in the DRC as well as other nations
around the world. That same year, an assassination attempt
briefly drove him into exile. However, he returned to his
hospital the following year where he continues to practice.
