    Title of Unit: Our Everyday Lives

    Title of Lesson: Respecting Ourselves and Our Classmates Submitted By: Martha Rendon

    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: (2 sentences)Students will be able to define respect. Students will be able to give examples of showing

    respect and explain why respect is important.

    B. Target Population: (3 bullet points) Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: all skill levels Grouping: Whole group for steps 1. Table groups for steps 2 and 3, Whole group for

    steps 4-7, table groups step 8, whole group 9 and whole group closure

    C. Materials: (bullet points) Chart paper Different colored markers

    D. Objectives: (bullet points)o NV State Social Studies Standards

    H.3.1.4 Demonstrate respect for each other and people in theneighborhood.

    o Student-Friendly Standards H.3.1.4 I can give examples of showing respect for my classmates.

    E. Procedure: (numbered steps)1. TW have students start to think about the word respect.2. TW have students work in their table groups to talk about what they think respect

    means and come up with a table group definition.

    3. SW share with the teacher what definition their group came up with (ex. Being nice toeach other.)

    4. TW write each groups definition on the chart paper. Now, we are going to take all ofthese definitions and come up with a class definition. (ex. Respect is thinking and

    acting in a positive way towards yourself and others.)

    5. TW then get another piece of chart paper and make two columns, one labeledRespect and the other column labeled Not Respect.

    6. SW start to give examples of respect and examples that would demonstrate theopposite of respect for their classmates (ex. Saying please and thank you in Respect

    and not saying sorry after an argument for Not Respect.)

    7. TW will pose question, What if we did not have respect? What would happen?8. SW work in their table groups to brainstorm answers to the posed questions

    tomorrow, I want you to bring in a list of examples that you see tonight or throughout

    the day of people showing respect to each other in the community.

    F. Assessment: (bullet points) What will you use to measure student understanding?

    I will use the student discussions and class participation to measure understanding.

    Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.I will know that students understand the concepts through discussion and if the student

    is able to give examples and explain why respect is important with me and with their

    groups.

    G. Reflection: (answers to assignment specific questions)1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

    I think this whole lesson will be fairly easy.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I dont think I would run into any big difficulties with this lesson.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I would want students to write about how they could help their friends be

    respectful.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I would pull a few students at a time to review the concept and allow more one-

    on-one time for the students who may need the additional help.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I think I would need to include more partner work (sometimes a peer can explain a

    concept better than a teacher can.)

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?I think the most difficult part was finding how I wanted to word everything and what

    kind of dialogue I would use to explain the concepts.
