Title of Unit: Christmas Around The World

Title of Lesson: Introduction to Unit Submitted By: NicciSleeter

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn about

Christmas around the world. This is the intro lesson to 6 lessons that will be

included in the unit.

B. Target Population:

Grade Level: 2nd grade

Skill Level: students at all learning levels.

Grouping: whole group plus individual work

C. Materials:

Each child needs a large cereal box.

Glue sticks

Scissors

Large brown construction paper, or bulletin board paper, or brown paint and

brushes if you opt to paint your suitcase.

White tag board, or cardstock

Red and green markers

Parchment paper

2 manila file folders for each student

Red and green fine markers

Library pocket envelopes. Each child will need 3

Small red and green dot stickers. (They will use these to put on their world map

each time a child shares a country.)

E. Procedure:

1. Introduce this unit. Explain that we are making suitcases for our Christmas trip around the

world.

2. Have children cut, glue and assemble their passports.

3. You should have address information from their records.

4. I print this information on an index card for them to copy.

5. Have measuring tapes available and buddy up students to measure each other so they can

write down their height in their pass port.

6. Students can paint their suitcases brown, cover them with construction

paper, or wrap them with brown bulletin board paper.

7. Make sure that you leave the side open where the cereal box opened. This

is where you will store your souvenirs /projects that you make, or

anything else you want your students to keep in their suitcases.

8. Pass out 2 file folders to each child.

9. Children trace their folder on a brown sheet of construction paper, trim it

and glue it to the front of their folder.

10. Show them your sample and have them glue one to the front of their cereal

box.

11. Have them slip the other folder inside this one.

12. Older students can trace and cut their tag board handles. Delegate this to a

room helper for younger children.

13. Students color their handles with green and red markers and glue them to

the top of their brown suitcase on one side, and to the top of their file

folder on the other side.

14. Children cut out, glue and write information on their suitcase tag then glue

it to their suitcase. It doesnt matter which side.

15. Students cut out and glue their parchment travel stickers to the outside of

their suitcase on one side, and to the front of the file folder on the other

side.

16. Show them your sample so they are evenly distributed. They can make up

their own pattern, or copy yours.

17. Have an adult help you trace and cut out your students hands.

18. Run off Globe with hands around it, world map, and ticket/passport page.

19. Children glue their hands to the back of their folder so that the globe will

be on top of them. They do not glue their fingers down, but fold them

over. (See photo.) Show them your sample.

20. Children cut out the globe and fill out the information before they glue it

over their hands.

21. Write the information they need to fill out the circles on the board.

22. Pass out their address index cards again so they can fill out their address

information

23. They glue their world map to the front flap of that folder. Each time a

student shares about the country they chose we will open to this flap and

find the country on this map and put a red or green small sticker dot on

that country.

24. I cut the library pockets and make them into a large pocket to hold their

passports. Children glue their passport pocket and their ticket pocket to the

front of the extra file folder thats tucked into the glued-on file folder. (See

photo).

25. Students glue passport and ticket labels to their pockets. I used USA

26. Children tuck their completed passport into the pocket.

27. Each time you visit a country give them a stamp of that country that they

will cut out and glue to their passport. They will write the name of the

country in the space provided.

28. You can get your passport sticker stamps free at

www.stickersandcharts.com

29. If you have access to a date stamper that would be awesome. Otherwise,

whatever date children share their country page with their classmates write

it kittywampus in their passport so that it looks like a stamp.

30. Closure: Explain for the next six days we will be learning about Christmas from around the

world and how children celebrate it.

F. Assessment:

What will you use to measure student understanding?

I will use the suitcase as a guide that the students got all the parts correct.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from thelesson.

I will know the students understood the concepts by checking out the suitcase

1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you toteach?

The easiest part of the lesson to teach would be explaining that we will be

making suitcases for our trip around the world.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?

The most challenging part of the lesson will be explaining all the parts and

the students actually getting it!

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I would follow up this lesson by putting information in the suitcase

4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

For the students who don't understand how to put the suitcase together I

will have someone show them what they did.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

The part of the lesson I would want to change is having to explain putting

the suitcase together more easier.

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficultpart?

The most difficult part of this lesson was which directions to put in

procedures.
