TAIPEI — The film “The As-sassin” by the veteran Taiwan-ese director Hou Hsiao-hsien has grabbed five awards, including the best director and best feature film, at the Golden Horse Awards.

The Golden Horse awards are considered the equivalents of the Oscars for Chinese-language mov-ies.

The awards ceremony Saturday evening crowned the mainland Chi-nese film director, Feng Xiaogang, as the best actor for his performance as an old gangster who rallied his old-time friends to rescue his son in the film “Mr. Six.”

The best actress title went to a lesser-known Karena Lam from “Zinnia Flower.” Lam edged out Shu Qi, a veteran actress and two-

time Golden Horse winner who starred in “The Assassin.”

“The Assassin” is a martial art film, featuring a trained female kill-er who is faced with an impossible choice between love and duty. It also won the best cinematography, best makeup and costume design and best sound effects.

The best new director went to Bi Gan, a 26-year-old independent filmmaker, for his movie “Kaili Blues,” a dreamlike story of a doc-tor in a rural town in China and his journey along the Kaili River where he finds his present, past and future all woven together.

Jiang Zhengke, a well-known mainland Chinese director, won the best original screenplay for his film “Mountains May Depart.” (ap)

Though several signs point in that direction, the outcome isn’t guaranteed. The movie is on track to have the biggest December open-ing ever, topping “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which took in $85 million in the U.S. and Canada on its opening weekend in Decem-ber 2012.

Ticket seller Fandango says ad-vance ticket sales for “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awak-ens” has already topped every other movie, though it didn’t provide figures. Imax says it has sold $18 million domestically, double the previous record. Imax receipts ac-count for a third of pre-release sales

for this movie, putting the domestic total at more than $50 million.

Whether it bests the biggest grosser of all time — “Avatar,” with $2.8 billion worldwide — depends on word of mouth and whether fans love it enough to watch it multiple times through the new year.

“Star Wars” will have the advan-tage of having weak competition for months. Marvel’s “Deadpool” doesn’t come out until mid-Febru-ary, while Warner Bros.’ “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” isn’t out until late March.

“I think it’s going to own Janu-ary,” said Erik Davis, managing edi-tor of Fandango, one of the nation’s

largest online ticket retailers. “I know one guy who has nine tickets to see it in the first week alone. That’s what we’re talking about.”

A single ticket in big cities can cost $25 or more after paying for extras like Imax and 3-D. Social media activity is also off the charts, according to entertainment news website Moviepilot Inc.

Exactly a month from release, “The Force Awakens” had 405 mil-lion trailer and teaser views on Face-book and YouTube. That’s 87 percent more than this summer’s “Jurassic World,” which opened domestically with a record $208.8 million in ticket sales and owns the all-time No. 3 spot with $1.7 billion worldwide. No. 2 is “Titanic,” at $2.1 billion.

What’s more, the 178,000 week-ly searches for the movie on Google is more than three times as high as “Jurassic World,” which had 51,800 weekly searches a month from re-lease, according to Moviepilot.

“People are searching and crav-ing and demanding content,” Mov-iepilot CEO Tobi Bauckhage said. “That’s a very strong signal.”

To be sure, December releases tend to be smaller than in the sum-mer, so coming out on top may take a marathon rather than a sprint.

As for the all-time high, one thing “Avatar” had going for it: It rode a wave of consumer interest in 3-D, which costs a few dollars more than regular tickets. That frenzy has largely cooled off. Traditionalists with a nostalgia for the originals might prefer 2-D screenings, es-pecially with director J.J. Abrams’ use of more realistic-looking special effects like puppetry.

The Walt Disney Co., which owns “Star Wars” maker Lucasfilm, declined to comment. (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Cer-emony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Ga-lungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beauti-fully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Chairman of Sabha Walaka of the Central PHDI, Putu Wirata Dwikora, affirmed that the measure is one of the perfect solutions to prevent the transfer of land ownership from local residents to inves-tors that potentially threat-ens the sanctity of Besakih Temple. If local government indeed has a strong commit-ment, he is confident that it can be realized.

“Actually, the results of the opinion poll are the hope of the majority of Balinese people for a long time. I think it’s time for provincial gov-ernment of Bali, Karangasem County and other county and municipal government in Bali to take concrete measure to protect and preserve the sanc-

tity of Besakih Temple,” said Wirata Dwikora.

Wirata Dwikora added that many advantages will be gained if the ownership right of the land around the Besakih Temple is in the hands of lo-cal government. Although in practice it is managed by com-munities, local government still has control and can direct the land use. “If there are indications that community will build and use the land for activities beyond the provision of temple sanctity or bhisama, local government as the land owner certainly has the right to stop it,” he said.

Later on if the land own-ership has been under the local government, the policy holder must still have the same

commitment to maintain the sanctity of Besakih Temple. Do not let the management right of the land be transferred to investors as well as private parties. In other words, the area must be managed by applying Tri Wana concept to support the existence of Besakih Temple and the sur-rounding area sanctified by Balinese people.

Similar opinion was also revealed by Chairman of Commission I of the Bali House, I Ketut Tama Tenaya. According to him, the propos-al of residents including the chief of Besakih customary village needs to be responded by provincial government. It can be done by purchasing the land around the temple or exchanging it with the land asset owned by provincial government so that the radius of temple sanctity becomes more secure.

“This should be coordi-nated with the community and local village. We think it

will be very nice if provincial government can purchase the land so that it becomes temple property. Temple sanctity will be more secure because if the lands remain to be owned by community it is worried if the land will be sold or transferred, so that the development made may not be in accordance with the designation,” he said.

This PDI-P politician added that the land around Besakih Temple may not be trans-ferred to the hands of inves-tors. To that end, it is neces-sary to inventory to land area and then look for solutions whether it will be purchased or exchanged with the land asset of provincial govern-ment. Similar measure must be made to the land around the sad kahyangan and dang kahyangan temples across Bali. A member of Commis-sion I of the Bali House, I Gusti Putu Widjera, agreed if people around Besakih Temple are relocated to main-tain the temple sanctity. When

he was a deputy regent on the lava land (Karangasem), the government purchased a land in the area of Kedungdung. Thus, the community around the temple can be relocated to the area.

“If it is purchased by pro-vincial government of Bali is nice as well. Then, we must equally realize because it must pass through a process in the regional budget. Regarding the price, it has to be adjusted to the selling price of tax object (NJOP),” he said. This Democrat said that local com-munity should be aware of this matter for the sake of the sanctity of Besakih Temple.

Earlier, in the discussion on Maintaining the Sanctity of Besakih at Besakih, the chief of Besakih customary village, I Wayan Gunatra, ex-pressed his concern about the continuity of the lands around Besakih Temple because the land was not pelaba or temple property or land asset owned by Karangasem or provincial government of Bali. Thus, the land around the temple is prone to be converted or transferred.

“In truth, at Besakih there is no land owned by local village or all the lands around the temple belong to private property. I am worried if the land will change ownership right to the hand of investors,” he said. Gunatra added that the government needs to acquire the lands at least 500 meters around the temple so that they will become temple property. On the other hand, the com-munity around the temple must also be empowered religiously so that their basic faith will be established. “If anything (invasion of inves-tor) happens later on, our Be-sakih Temple remains secure because within the radius of 500 meters has been owned by the temple,” he explained. (rin/ian)

According to Tjokorda Gde Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bali, the KSPN is a means to achieve the objective of the Tri Hita Karana (THK) namely harmony and balance. On that account, he concluded it is necessary to see the culture and tourism in their entirety. “We must intel-ligently sort out which are the means and the objec-tives,” he said.

But Wirata stated that when people apply the means wrongly, it will have a bad impact. Therefore, it is needed another means in the effort to preserve Besakih. The other speaker in the program said that it is needed to engage inves-tors in the conservation and management of Besakih. So, it requires a solution in the structuring of Besakih.

Chairman of the As-sociation of Tourism Intel-lectuals, I Putu Anom, said that the KSPN is indeed a means but it has a high risk. With the inclusion of Besakih in the KSPN, he feared that Balinese people will vie to sell their land. “If it is included in the KSPN, investors will be vying to come. To rescue Besakih, at least it must be cleared within the radius of 500 me-ter,” he explained. It can be done by having a governing body of Besakih.

A.A. Made Dewandra Jelantik, a community fig-ure of Karangasem, had confidence there are other ways that can be done in the effort to organize and preserve Besakih. “The government can make co-operation with investors without having to use the KSPN. In other words, the cooperation here means to involve people having integrity to maintain the sanctity and have a lot of money,” he said. So, dis-trict government should immediately take initiative to design a good master-plan so that the purification and investor can go hand in hand. (kmb42)

To avoid problems, arrive at the airport early enough to let your bag get to the plane, and print out a copy of your itinerary from the airline’s website and stick it inside just in case all the tags get ripped off.

In the U.S. during the first nine months of this year, 3.3 bags for ev-ery 1,000 passengers didn’t make it to their destination on time, accord-ing to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. That’s not great if you are one of those people whose bag is delayed or lost. But consider this: during the 2007 peak in air travel, airlines were mishandling more than twice as many suitcases — 7.2 bags per 1,000 passengers.

Globally, the baggage-mishan-dling rate has fallen 61 percent from its peak in 2007, according to SITA, an aviation communications and technology provider. That has saved the industry $18 billion.

The vast majority of bags — 80 percent — aren’t lost but just delayed, according to SITA. And it takes about a day and a half to reunite passengers with their bags. Another 14 percent are damaged or have their contents reported stolen. And nearly 6 percent of bags are lost or stolen completely.

December and January tend to be the worst months because there are a lot of infrequent travelers checking multiple bags, and a few snowstorms can add to delays and suitcases that miss connections.

The overall improvements to baggage handling come after car-riers spent millions of dollars to upgrade their systems.

Tug drivers now get real-time updates of gate changes so they can change their path and ensure that bags make their connection. Scanners allow bags to be tracked throughout the system, prevent-ing a suitcase bound for Chicago

from being loaded onto a plane to Detroit. Gate agents have printers to help tag bags that are checked at the last minute because of full overhead bins. And, overall, fewer bags are being checked because of bag fees.

“We continue to invest in tech-nology and in processes so we un-derstand where bags are at all times, and we can manage the failure

points,” says Bill Lentsch, senior vice president for airport customer service and cargo operations at Delta Air Lines.

Airlines are also starting to em-power passengers — or at least keep them better informed.

Delta was the first airline to al-low fliers to track their own checked luggage, first on the airline’s web-site in 2011 and then on its mobile

app in 2012. Bag tags are scanned when the suitcase is dropped off, loaded onto a plane, loaded onto a connecting flight and then again before being placed on the carousel at baggage claim. Passengers can see all those scans.

American Airlines followed suit in August, allowing passengers to see when a suitcase was loaded or unloaded from a plane. Right now, it is only available on the airline’s website but will eventually be part of the mobile app.

Sitting on a plane ready for take-off and knowing that your suitcase isn’t in the hold below might be frustrating. But airlines say they would rather have passengers know it then and talk immediately to a baggage representative, once on the ground, instead of standing at the carousel waiting for a suitcase that isn’t there.

If your bag is late, you might be able to get some bonus frequent flier miles or even a voucher toward a future flight.

Since 2010, Alaska Airlines has promised that suitcases will be on the carousel within 20 minutes of the plane arriving at the gate. If not, passengers get a $25 voucher for a future flight or 2,500 bonus frequent flier miles. Delta copied that policy this year, offering 2,500 bonus miles to existing members of its frequent flier program — but no voucher. Act quickly: Alaska requires you to reach out within two hours of arrival; Delta within three days. And ultimately it’s your stop-watch against the airlines’ — they are the final arbiter of tardiness.

And if you wanted to get that $25 checked bag fee refunded, you are out of luck. (ap)

NEW YORK — Heading into winter, fliers should take extra precautions with their checked luggage — December and Janu-ary are traditionally the worst months for lost bags.

“Inevitably, state subsidy is a must. In its absence, development cannot be carried out,” Abadi Poer-nomo, a member of DEN, stated at a press conference while reporting on the outcome of the Bali Energy Forum on Friday.

The policy to subsidize the program will be included in the General Plan of National Energy

(RUEN), which is currently being drafted by the DEN, he noted.

Based on Poernomo’s opinion, the economic price of electricity produced by an EBT power plant is far higher than the purchase price offered by the State Electricity Cor-poration (PT PLN).

He pointed out that the price of electricity produced by a geother-

mal power plant is 13 cents /kWh. Meanwhile, PT PLN is only able to buy at a price below 10 cents/kWh.

“So, the three-cent margin for each kWh is what will be subsidized by the state,” he clarified.

Moreover, another DEN member Andang Bachtiar remarked that the results of the Bali Energy Forum served as recommendations for the DEN to draft the RUEN.

“We have been drafting the RUEN, and the process is expected

to be completed in 1-2 months. The outcome of this meeting will serve as recommendations to chalk out priorities for the EBT on whether to use solar or geothermal power,” Andang noted.

Meanwhile, DEN member Tumiran stated that the Bali Energy Forum highlighted the increase in the world’s energy needs, which are currently dominated by the Organization for Economic Coop-eration and Development (OECD) of non-member countries.

According to Tumiran, the en-ergy needs of OECD countries have stagnated, thereby leading to EBT.

“The OECD countries have sup-ported their citizens who have been able to pay the price of energy cor-responding to the economic value,” he added.

The OECD non-members be-lieve that the choice of renewable energy must be made selectively as the cost is still high, which neces-sitates the implementation of a fit policy and other incentives. (ant)

KUTA — The Malaysia Health-care Travel Council (MHTC) re-vealed that in recent years Malaysia becomes a destination of travelers wishing to check their health while traveling. Regional Director of the MHTC Market Development Mohd Zulhery Fahmy said on Fri-day (Nov. 20) that Malaysia is now focusing on increasing the number of tourists through the development of health tourism package.

He expressed that Malaysia does not only strive to offer the latest technology in health field, but also offers an attraction package for all types of travelers. In the Talk Show held in Kuta last Friday, the MHTC offered a variety of medical trip packages.

A variety of treatments are on offer, including general check-up, beauty healthcare as well as other treatments such as cardiology, on-cology, aesthetic surgery, robotic surgery, fertility treatment, bar-iatric surgery, orthopedics, dental implant, ophthalmology, neurol-ogy and aesthetic procedures that include minimal invasive surgery and other treatments.

“Through this activity, the Ma-laysia Healthcare Travel Council would like to invite citizens of Indonesia to be more concerned about their health by doing early medical checkup. We have com-plete hospital facilities with spe-cialist of experienced doctors and world-class quality of services,” said Fahmy.

According to him, the number of medical travelers coming to Malay-sia also continues to show consis-tent growth from 2011 until today. Currently, the number of travelers visiting Malaysia for health tourism totally reaches 3.25 million. By nationality, they are listed in top ten including Indonesia, India, Japan, China, UK, USA, Bangladesh and Australia.

“Hopefully, this medical trip will

no longer become a scary thing for patients, but can make them feel more relaxed while undergoing the treatment. We are very pleased to be able to help the citizens of Indonesia, especially the residents of Bali that want to take medication to Malaysia,” said Fahmy.

As it is known today that health becomes the most important thing

for a living. Just like a system, our body is composed of units in the form of functional organs that are interconnected. On that ac-count, the occurrence of a disease damaging the organs potentially causes damage to other organs. If the damage is more complex, it will have a negative impact on the body and causes death. So, it

is necessary for us to recognize diseases that allegedly have a high lethal potential. Thus, we will be more alert to avoid or prevent the disease in order not to damage our body.

The first step required is medical checkup. Like a vehicle that should be checked regularly, human body also requires regular check for early

detection of disease possibilities. Medical checkup is the first step to know the symptoms of disease existing in the body and it is also similar to a report card assessing and evaluating the condition of body as well as providing accurate information and analysis on the condition of the organs in our body. In the spasm of chaos, some rev-elers thought the lights and sounds were part of the show. Then the lead singer fled, bodies began to fall — and shouts of partying turned to screams of horror.

It was the beginning of the worst carnage of the Paris attacks that killed 130 people, injured over 300, and caused the French president to declare his nation at war with Islamic State extremists. The legendary music venue in a shabby-chic corner of Paris turned into a chamber of death that one policeman described as “Dante’s Inferno,” as three men laden with explosives and toting Ka-lashnikovs fired indiscriminately at revelers, turning the dance floor into a sea of blood and body parts.

“I crawled on the ground as low as possible without getting up,” said Arthur, one of the Bataclan fans, who didn’t give his last name. “I scrambled for the emergency exit on the left. We all crawled. Others tried to walk out and stepped on an arm or two.”

Partyers poured like bees from a hive from the emergency exit into a backstage alley. The escape was hampered by bodies of dead and injured clogging the exit. Out-side people on higher floors of the concert hall dangled desperately

from windows, facing the choice of gunfire from the attackers or a bone-shattering drop to the ground.

The attackers turned up at the Bataclan around 9:40 p.m. in a black Volkwagen Polo, after two other ex-tremist teams had launched suicide bombing attacks on the Stade de France soccer stadium and a string of drive-by shootings at cafes and restaurants. Getting out, they un-leashed a burst of automatic gunfire at two young men on rental bikes who happened to be cycling by. The men crumpled to the ground, shot at point-blank range.

“To see it with my own eyes, it was like being in a horror film,” said witness Ludovic Mintchov. “In 10 years, I won’t forget it.”

The attackers strafed their way inside the concert hall, through the bar and merchandise counter, and straight to the pit, according to wit-ness accounts — unleashing a torrent of gunfire.

As the attackers mowed people down, a police commissioner and his driver, learning from the police radio that they were near the site, sped to the concert hall before more elite teams could get there. The commissioner charged inside, traded fire with a gunman, and took him out of action before retreating so

that special-operations teams could assemble.

It was a key action that slowed the pace of carnage, and may have saved scores of lives. While the Bataclan death toll of at least 89 was horrific, most of the partygoers survived. Two police officials said the com-missioner wants to remain out of public view and is still recovering from the shock.

“It’s their action that made it pos-sible to stop the killing,” Christophe Molmy, who heads the elite BRI police intervention squad, said of the police commissioner and his driver. When Molmy’s rapid-reaction team arrived at 10:15, “there’s no shoot-ing, there’s no noise, there’s an oppressive silence inside the Bata-clan.”

Another police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said: “It could’ve been a lot worse ... just think of the damage an extra active gunman could have caused.”

Inside, the remaining gunmen took hostages and used them as human shields or as go-betweens with police — ordered to tell the elite police teams to stay back. One concertgoer, who only gave his first name, Sebastien, was among the hostages. He said he inexplicably survived after a surreal face-to-face conversation with the attackers. Speaking on RTL radio, he said the extremists wanted to send a message of resistance to France’s government for its role in coalition air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria.

“They told us it was just the beginning. And that war was start-ing now. And they were there in the name of Islamic State,” said Sebastien, who like other survivors has chosen to protect his identity. “Then they asked us whether we agreed with them. So I’ll let you imagine the silence that followed. The timid ones nodded. The braver ones said ‘yes.’”

Sebastien was forced into a tense conversation with attackers, which lasted an hour. One asked him whether he valued money, then held out a roll of bills and told him to burn it. He did as he was told. Sebastian first tried to use humor in the conversation, but dropped that after realizing that “at any moment a misplaced or misinterpreted word could mean death.”

Sebastien said he remains puzzled about the gunmen’s motives in the discussion: They spoke to police ne-gotiators four or five times by phone, and their only demand was that the officers keep away. (ap)

BAMAKO - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday he wanted global cooperation to combat terrorism in the wake of an Islamist militant attack on a luxury hotel in Mali that killed 19 people including six Russians.

Friday’s assault came a week after militants killed 130 people in gun and bomb attacks in Paris claimed by Islamic State, and three weeks after a Russian airliner was downed over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula by what Moscow and Western governments say was a bomb, killing 224 all people aboard.

The bloodshed at the Radisson Blu hotel in Mali, a former French colony, evoked the problems French troops and U.N. peacekeepers face in restoring security and order in a West African state that has battled rebels and militants in its weakly governed desert north for years.

Jihadist groups Al Mourabitoun and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, which ended when Malian commandos stormed the building and rescued 170 people, many of them foreigners. President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said two militants were killed in the commando operation.

His government increased security at strategic points around Ba-mako at the start of a declared 10-day state of emergency.

“Mali will not shut down because of this attack. Paris and New York were not shut down and Mali won’t be. Terrorism will not win,” Keita said during a visit to the hotel on Saturday.

Six employees of Russian regional airline Volga-Dnepr were killed, Russia’s foreign ministry said, while six others were rescued.

Putin sent a telegram of condolences to Keita and said “the widest international cooperation” was needed to confront global terrorism, according to a statement by the Kremlin.

On Tuesday, Putin pledged to hunt down militants responsible for blowing up the airliner, as well as intensified air strikes against militants in Syria, after the Kremlin concluded a bomb had destroyed the plane.

Putin and French President Francois Hollande also spoke by phone on Tuesday and agreed to boost coordination of their military actions in fighting jihadist militants in Syria. Chinese President Xi Jinping condemned the “cruel and savage” attack, whose dead included three Chinese executives of a state-run railway firm.

“China will strengthen cooperation with the international com-munity, resolutely crack down on violent terrorist operations that devastate innocent lives and safeguard world peace and security,” the Beijing Foreign Ministry quoted Xi as saying in a statement on its website.

One American and a deputy from a regional parliament in Belgium were also killed in the Bamako hotel attack, though French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said he was not aware of any French nationals killed. (rtr)

DENPASAR - Bali safety condition becomes a serious discussion of Bali Lead-ership Coordination Forum (Forkompimda) following the terrorist acts occurred in Paris, France, recently. Not to mention, there must be anticipative measure against the vulnerability related to simultaneous regional election having been around the corner.

“At present, in general the security condition of Bali does look cool and calm. However, this situation is expected not to make the public and security forces unguarded,” said the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, when holding the Forkompimda meeting in the meeting room

of Pusdalops Crisis Centre of the PB BPBD, Friday (Nov. 20).

According to him, the possibility of terrorist acts occurred in Paris to spread to other areas should still be anticipated. Moreover, the terror hitting the city of fashion was known to use materials easily available in the market other than applying sophisticated technology. Pastika hoped this can get the attention of the security forces, especially the intelligence ranks. “The se-curity very much depends on the function of intelligence in the early detection,” he explained.

Pastika asked the intelligence to work closely with the figures or leaders of par-

ticular community because it knows what is happening in the neighborhood. In this regard, the Head of the Regional State Intelligence Agency (KABINDA) Bali, Eddy Kristanto, explained that his agency has carried out a number of measures to prevent terrorism and insecurity in the re-gional election in Bali. Specifically related to the implementation of the simultaneous election, the agency has conducted a review directly to the district and municipality to implement the democratic event in De-cember.

“We have carried out direct inspection to the four regions, namely Denpasar, Karangasem, Tabanan and Jembrana,” he

added. Up to the voting day, his agency will continue monitoring to detect potential vulnerabilities.

Similar opinion was delivered by the Assistant of Intelligence to the Chief of IX / Udayana Regional Military Staff, Bayu Permana. As directed by President Joko Widodo, the simultaneous election has become a particular concern of his ranks. “We are intensifying joint patrols to detect vulnerabilities that may arise during the implementation of the elec-tion,” he said. As for the prevention of terrorism, he suggested that relevant agencies to conduct identity card raids. (kmb32)

“There are things needed to un-derstand about the future associated with the fairly rapid development of Bali that has been going global. We hope that we really become a host in our own home,” said the economist from the Udayana University, Dr. I Gusti Wayan Murjana Yasa, in Den-pasar, Saturday (Nov. 21).

Murjana Yasa added that Bali-nese people should have a quality. On that account, the Balinese must improve themselves by increasing the quality of education. Similarly, they must also equip themselves with creativity that allows captur-ing a wide range of opportunities. Thus, the Balinese will not be easily eroded and displaced by the glo-balization and the superb migrant traffic coming to Bali today.

“Well ... the following is from the macro side where we should try to fix exactly how we want Bali to look like in the future, the correct arrangement associated with spatial planning and directed investment that allows us to organize the sus-

tainable development of Bali in the future,” he explained.

Chairman of the Chamber of Com-merce and Industry (Kadin) Bali, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said that the spirit of Bali’s economy is based on tourism, while the spirit of Bali tourism is culture. On that account, cultural preservation becomes a fixed price for Balinese people including local government.

“The elite must be able to finance or find a solution so that in the fu-ture the customary financing will not be costly and people will not be burdened by the culture,” he said. More importantly, he added, the leaders of Bali must take side in lo-cal entrepreneurs. Every investment from outside Bali should be directed by the leaders to make cooperation with local entrepreneurs.

“If local businesses go bankrupt, Balinese people will die in Bali and ultimately there will be nobody pre-serving this Bali. It is impossible for people from outside Bali to maintain Bali,” he said. (kmb32)

NEW YORK - Lackluster earnings reports from retail-ers have raised questions about whether the 2015 holiday shopping season will bring as much of a boost to the US economy as hoped.

Apparel giant Gap and kitchen and home furnishings chain Williams-Sonoma late this week became the latest big US retailers to slash their profit forecast for the critical December quarter.

The grim forecasts raised doubts about whether an im-proving US jobs market and lower gasoline prices will trans-late into a holiday boon for retailers. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of US economic activity.

Earlier in November, Macy’s also gave a dim outlook, citing a drop in sales to foreign tourists because of the strong dollar and the need to sharply discount a glut of cold-weather merchandise that has not moved due to unseasonably warm weather.

“I wish I could say it’s going to get ice cold across the country,” Macy’s chief executive Terry Lundgren said in a November 11 conference call with Wall Street analysts. “But you can see in our forecast for the fourth quarter we are not expecting that.”

“We’re not selling lumber, so I can’t carry the lumber over to 2016 and sell it at the same price next year. We’re selling fashion apparel, so we’re going to mark that inventory down. That will be good for consumers but it will obviously put pressure on our own margins.”

Inventory levels at auto dealers, furniture stores, home improvement centers and department stores all rose in Sep-tember, lifting the inventory-to-sales ratio in that month to the highest level since May 2009, according to a report by consultancy IHS.

IHS projects a 3.5 percent rise in holiday retail sales in 2015 compared with last year.

Growth of 3.5 percent is “a pretty strong forecast,” said economist Chris Christopher, adding that the economic ef-fects are mixed. “Consumers are benefitting, but retailers are having a hard time,” he said. (afp)

The 10 leaders in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations signed a declaration during their summit establishing the ASEAN Economic Community, as part of a larger ASEAN Community that aims for political, security, cultural and social integration.

Summit host Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia hailed the ASEAN Community as a “land-mark achievement,” and urged members to accelerate integration. “The region is primed to expand exponentially,” he said.

The community, known by its acronym AEC, is already a reality and many of its fundamentals have been applied in the region such as removal of tariff barriers and visa restrictions among others. It has also led to greater political and cultural cooperation.

AEC will bolster income and employment, and provide the re-gion with stronger economic mus-cle in facing the other giants, said Michael G. Plummer, a professor of international economics at the Europe Center of Johns Hopkins

University, based in Bologna, Italy. “ASEAN integration will help bal-ance the economic power of China and India,” Plummer said.

But there is a long way to go before the AEC becomes fully functional after becoming a legal entity on Dec. 31. The region’s diversity can be a hindrance some-times. ASEAN has 630 million people, speaking different lan-guages, following various faiths and governed by various systems, including rambunctious democra-cies, a military dictatorship, quasi-civilian, authoritarian, monarchy and communism.

“The AEC is arguably the most ambitious economic integration program in the developing world. But implementation of the AEC

is increasingly uphill. Much re-mains to be done and the region faces many challenges in finishing,” Plummer said.

It falls short in more politically sensitive areas such as opening up agriculture, steel, auto production and other protected sectors. ASEAN citizens will be allowed to work in other countries in the region, but will be limited to jobs in eight sectors, including engineering, accountancy and tourism. This accounts for only 1.5 percent of the total jobs in the re-gion, and host countries still can put up constitutional regulatory hurdles restricting the inflow of talent.

Intra-regional trade has remained at around 24 percent of ASEAN’s total global trade for the last decade, far lower than 60 percent in the

European Union.ASEAN members also struggle

to resolve diplomatic flare-ups among each other such as border disputes between Cambodia and Vietnam, or Indonesia’s inability to fight annual forest fires that spew noxious haze for months over Ma-laysia, Singapore and Thailand.

There are also other hurdles, such as corruption, uneven in-frastructure and unequal costs of transportation and shipping. A wide economic gulf divides Southeast Asia’s rich and middle income economies — Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand and the Philippines — and its four less developed members, Communist Vietnam and Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. (ap)

Southeast Asia creates Economic Community, but challenges remain

KUALA LUMPUR — Thirteen years after the idea was mooted, Southeast Asian leaders on Sunday formally created a unified economic community in a region more populous and diverse than the European Union or North America, and with hopes of competing with China and India.

NEGARA - The Jembrana Education, Tourism and Culture Agency drafted a master plan of tourist area in Jembrana. A total of four locations are worked on consisting of the Juwuk Manis waterfall (Pekutatan), Rambutsi-wi (Mendoyo), Gelar (Jembrana) and Gilimanuk (Melaya).

They are all still awaiting de-cision from central government to be further made its detailed en-gineering design (DED). Regent of Jembrana I Putu Artha accom-panied by Regional Secretary of Jembrana I Gede Gunadnya and relevant agencies said that some of the locations having great potential are the Gilimanuk and Rambutsiwi, Yehembang.

In the regional budget draft 2016, there are several strategic projects expected to boost the regionally generated revenue (PAD) where one of which is the tourism development. They include the rest area of Gili-manuk. From the data, the aver-age vehicle going to Gilimanuk reaches 3,400 and it poses an opportunity. With the rest area, at least there are people stopping by and spending their money in Jembrana.

In addition, he said that in 2016 there will be the construc-tion of a regional botanical garden, through the cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). From the project, especially with regard to tourism development, the people of Jembrana are encour-aged not to sell their land, but it is better to be leased. However, the most important, according to the regent, is preparing the labor competition by improving their ability and skill.

He hoped when the tourism locus in Jembrana can develop and advance in the future, local people will not just become a spectator.

Especially in Gilimanuk, the location to be developed is the area of the Gilimanuk Bay. It will be developed into a culinary and marine tourism with natural scenery owned by Gilimanuk Bay. According to him, the land adjacent to the West Bali Nation-al Park (TNBB) has been defined within the limits used. So, local government should not hesitate to build there. (kmb26)

It was revealed by Subdivision Head of the Area Utilization and Fish Type, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, M. Firdaus Agung Kunto Kurniawan, in a visit to Bule-leng, Friday (Nov. 20).

Furthermore, Firdaus said that based on a survey by the Directorate for Area Con-servation and Fishery Type in 2014, the enthusiasts of marine tourism package in Buleleng amount to 41,900 people. During high season, a total of 179 traditional boats sail out to sea to deliver tourists watching dol-phin attraction each day. Beyond the season, the average departing boat only comes to 34 boats each day.

Such bustling boat activities are very wor-rying as they can disturb the dolphin habitat preservation. Moreover, the dolphin as a pro-tected marine animal is very sensitive to noise of outboard motor. Without being controlled, it can have an impact that threatens the safety of

dolphin population. Not only that, the behavior of marine tour guides in this area mostly pay less attention to safety of dolphin when escort-ing guests. For instance, they approach the herd of dolphin so that guests can freely witness the beauty of dolphin in their natural habitat. This condition can harm because the herd of dolphin may be hit by boat or affected by the blows of engine propeller. In addition, the installation of tourism facilities at sea like water sport can harm the dolphin habitat.

“If the environment is too noisy with the roar of boat engine or the behavior of boat jockey chasing dolphin herd can cause them stressed. The worst possibility is that the dol-phin herd in this area moves to other waters,” he said.

To resolve this problem, according to Fir-daus, the control effort by providing awareness to marine tour guides in order to pay attention to safety of dolphin population becomes a

“capital” in the tourism business. This effort cannot be done by one party only, but requires the joint efforts of all the related components. Thus, the dolphin population remains sustain-able and has positive impact on the continuity of its habitat.

“I think it is required the awareness of all parties. If the habitat is not well maintained or the population is threatened, the business de-velopment of marine tourism will be affected. To that end, it has to be overseen together,” he said.

The Head of the Buleleng Fisheries and Marine Resources, Nyoman Sutrisna, agreed to undertake joint efforts in preserving the coastal habitat of dolphin in Buleleng. In the near fu-ture, the agency will gather the local fishermen group of Lovina Beach and several villages in Buleleng. This player of marine tourism is required to preserve the dolphin habitat as capital in their respective businesses.

“We will try to gather our fisherman col-league and marine tour guides so as to preserve the dolphin on our shores. At least, when drop-ping off guests their behavior can be controlled by paying attention to the comfort of dolphin itself,” he said. (kmb38)

SINGARAJA - Marine tourism relying on the beauty of dolphin in Buleleng is growing rapidly these days. This tour package always draws the interest of enthu-siastic domestic and foreign travelers. Such rapid development of marine tourism in North Bali is feared to be impaired. Therefore, surveillance effort should be made by all the existing components.

JAKARTA - Twirling spears, swords and clubs at fright-ening speeds, the brightly clad fighters performing backflips and flying kicks could be mistaken for extras in a kung fu movie being shot in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

They are not actors, however, but athletes hoping not just to win gold at the World Wushu Championships but to elevate the Chinese martial art -- made famous by Jet Li and Jackie Chan -- from an ancient warrior code to a modern-day Olympic sport.

Wushu -- a broad term for the martial arts disciplines from China -- is still often called kung fu and pits fighters against one another in hand-to-hand combat or intricate acrobatics focusing on flair and weapon work.

Competitors dressed in elaborate costumes scream as they soar through the air brandishing staffs and blades, landing on one foot and holding a complex pose before launching into a dizzying spin. Others, armed with a sword in each hand, fend off attackers bearing spears in a choreo-graphed routine marked on technique and accuracy.

The moves are similar to the impressive fighting tech-niques popularised in kung fu films of the 1980s and 90s, a genre that inspired a generation of today’s wushu cham-pions to master the demanding routines.

“I was interested in how they move, how they fly, how they use different weapons,” Russian wushu athlete Daria Tarassova said of the kung fu superstars she watched in films as a teenager.

“I wanted to do those beautiful movements,” she told AFP in Jakarta between her events.

The sport has come a long way since a rising martial artist named Jet Li -- years before he found fame in Hol-lywood -- demonstrated wushu on the White House lawn for former president Richard Nixon.

Wushu has transformed from a centuries-old, exclu-sively Chinese combat discipline into a professional sport with a world federation and global participation.

Li remains a major drawcard as wushu’s official global ambassador -- he was mobbed during a brief appearance in Jakarta.

But recent blockbuster movies like “Kung Fu Panda” and “The Last Airbender” have driven remarkable growth outside Asia, particularly in Europe and the Americas where

younger fighters are signing up to learn the ancient ways.“I’m starting to see younger athletes coming in who have

seen it in the movies,” Mario Martinez, US national team coach and long-time wushu fighter, told AFP, adding the sport had grown “immensely” in the US recently.

This year’s world championships, which ran from No-vember 13 to 18, featured a record number of around 600 athletes, with thousands tuning in worldwide to watch the drama live online, a first for wushu as it tries to take the sport global and attract new fans.

Many of those rising to the medal dais -- including Tarassova and compatriot Vladimir Maximov, who won two golds -- hail from emerging wushu nations, including some from outside Asia, which has traditionally dominated the sport.

Wushu features several disciplines. Fighters in “sanda” -- a type of kick boxing which allows wrestling and throwing -- spar on a raised mat. By contrast, “taolu” more closely resembles gymnastics with weapons, where traditional rou-tines based on attack and defence techniques are performed individually and in teams. (afp)

He said that some of the ASEAN members had prepared 92 percent, 93 percent and 94 percent. “This means that like it or not every thing must be prepared,” he added.

On the factors which have not yet been prepared, the President said that there are many points that

can reach hundreds. “I think the 94 percent point is a maximal one,” he added.

Referring to the statement of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak that the ASEAN peoples are difficult to feel direct impact of the ASEAN Economic Community

(AEC), Jokowi said it is the task of a head of state/government to make it go down to earth.

“It should not be felt by only a group or a handful of persons but also by all layers of the people begin-ning from the grass-root level to the upper class people,” Jokowi said.

He said that Indonesia should be able to make use of the AEC and take advantage of it. “We cannot expect to get something (easily). All should be seized.”

Jokowi said efficiency and com-petitiveness must be improved. Regulations which posed con-straints must be revised. (ant)

JAKARTA - The State-owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry is encour-aging state-owned companies in the tourism and transportation sector to in-crease their performance and synergy in an effort to support the development of national tourism industry.

“We give an emphasis in the syn-ergy to two concepts, namely tangible and intangible attractions by increas-ing accessibility to tourism locations and the development of tourism,” Deputy for regional logistics energy affairs of the Tourism Ministry Edwin Hidayat said on Sunday.

The cooperation involved three state-owned tourism companies namely PT Hotel Indonesia Natour, PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (TWC) and PT Pengembangan Wisata Indonesia or Indonesian Tourism Development (ITDC).

It also involved state-owned trans-portation companies of PT Angkasa Pura II, PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, PT Pelindo I-IV, PT Pelni and Damri.

Edwin said that from the aspect of tangible attraction, tourism state companies must increase facilities such as the management of the Candi Borobudur Buddhist temple and Nusa Dua beach of Bali with development adjusted to the surrounding condi-tions.

“The development of a tourism region will no longer be limited to one location only but extended to other sector, because, for example, it gets facility support such as bus feeders from Damri,” he said.

The same thing also true to the development of synergy with airlines, ships and train which will be very ef-fective in linking the tourism areas.

From the aspect of intangible at-traction, tourism state firms can take part in the development of culture and arts and the local wisdom to be offered to tourists. He cited as an example the cooperation with PT Sarinah which takes part in the promotion of highly valuable arts products such the nusan-tara batik cloths by opening a batik center. (ant)

The collapse occurred Saturday evening in the Kachin state commu-nity of Hpakant, said Brang Seng, a jade businessman, who watched as bodies were pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital morgue.

“People were crying,” he said, adding that some lost loved ones when boulders and earth ripped down the slopes. “I’m hearing that more than 100 people died. In some cases, entire families were lost.” Lamai Gum Ja, a community leader, said homes at the base of the mine-waste dump also were flattened.

In addition to the dead, he es-

timated that between 100 and 200 people were missing. Search and rescue teams wearing bright orange uniforms combed through the rubble for survivors.

Hpakant is around 965 kilome-ters (600 miles) north of Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city. The region, which borders China, is home to some of the world’s highest-quality jade, bringing in billions of dollars a year, though researchers say most of that money goes to individuals and companies tied to Myanmar’s former military rulers.

Myanmar only recently started

moving from a half-century of dictatorship to democracy. Hpak-ant, the epicenter of the country’s jade boom, remains desperately poor, with bumpy dirt roads and constant electricity blackouts. In-formal miners risk and often lose their lives picking through scraps at the giant mines.

“Large companies, many of them owned by families of former generals, army companies, cronies and drug lords, are making tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year through their plunder of Hpa-kant,” said Mike Davis of Global Witness, a group that investigates revenue misuse.

“Their legacy to local people is a dystopian wasteland in which scores of people at a time are buried alive in landslides,” he said. (ap)

HARARE, Z imbabwe — Pageant judges have crowned a new winner of Zimbabwe’s 4th annual “Mister Ugly” contest, upsetting supporters of the crowd favorite and prompting rioting at the event.

Judges on Saturday chose 42-year-old Milton Sere, citing his numerous missing front teeth and a wide range of grotesque facial expressions, over William Masvinu, who had held the title since 2012.

Masvinu and his supporters mobbed the judges upon hearing their decision, claiming that Sere was “too handsome” to win and his ugliness wasn’t natural since it was based on missing teeth.

“I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth,” maintained Masvinu, gesturing at his rival.

“Do we have to lose our teeth to win? This is cheating,” shouted another contestant, Patrick Mu-pereki. While no one was injured, there was a great deal of pushing and shoving as the results were announced and insults were hurled at the judges. Sere dis-missed the critics as just “sore losers” as he pocketed the $500 in winnings.

“They should just accept that I am uglier than them,” he said, adding that he makes his living showcasing his ugliness to local

schoolchildren in his neigh-borhood at the outskirts of the capital.

The complaints of Masvinu and the other contestants may have a degree of validity. Orga-nizers had previously announced that disabilities or enhancements would not be accepted in the competition which should focus on “natural ugliness.”

Pageant organizer David Ma-chowa originally told the As-sociated Press that he began the contest to remove the stigma of ugliness. “Looks are God given. We should all be proud of who we are.”

The pageant involved three rounds of modelling, with indi-vidual and group struts down a catwalk of a Harare nightclub.

“Sere made tremendous ef-fort to enhance his ugliness by pulling facial stunts,” said judge Abigail Mataranyika, a university student. “Masvinu thought he is so ugly that he didn’t need to try hard. That cost him the crown.”

This year’s competition at-tracted a record number of 36 entries, compared to just five in 2012 when Masvinu began his winning streak. The competi-tion was suspended in 2014 due to a lack of sponsorship, but this year the owners of a string of Harare nightclubs donated $1,000. (ap)

SEMARAPURA - Semarajaya museum was built on the former Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onder-wijs (MULO-Dutch Middle School) and former SMPN 1 Klungkung Junior High School located within the complex of Kertha Gosa and main entrance gates (former royal door of Klungkung), precisely on Jalan Untung Surapati, Klungkung. In the Museum are exhibited the items from pre-historic times to the objects used during the Klungkung struggles. The Semarajaya museum was inaugurated by the Minister of the Home Affairs on April 28, 1992. In the museum can be seen the items used as ceremonial paraphernalia by the kings of Klungkung and photo documentation of royal descendants of Klungkung. The museum building has a unique architectural style giving the impression representing the blend of ancient Dutch architectural style and Balinese traditional style. The building was built by Dutch government after the collapse of Klungkung kingdom on April 28, 1908. Precisely, it was built in 1920.

Alvarez won the WBC version of the title that Cotto vacated days earlier for not paying sanctioning fees. His win set up a possible megafight with Gennady Golovkin, the middleweight champion who was watching at ring-side. “With all due respect if he wants to fight right now I’ll put the gloves on and fight him,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez won by scores of 117-11, 119-109 and 118-110. The Associated Press had him ahead 116-112. Alva-rez, whose only loss came to Floyd Mayweather Jr., set the tone early, winging big left hooks in the first round that Cotto largely avoided. As the fight went on, though, he began landing more of his punches as he patiently stalked Cotto around the ring. Cotto boxed well at times and landed flurries of punches, but his didn’t seem to have nearly the same power as those thrown by Alvarez. In the final rounds, Alvarez caught Cotto with a series of punches that seemed to shake him some though he was never down and never appeared in real trouble.

“It’s an emotion I can’t put into words,” Alvarez said. “I’m very happy and much respect to Miguel

Cotto. I will always respect him and he’s a great champion but now it’s my era.” Cotto expressed disappointment in the judges’ decision, but left the ring before speaking.

“We thought it was much closer than the scorecards showed,” said Cotto’s trainer, Freddie Roach. “It was a competitive fight.” Alvarez went into Cotto’s locker room after the fight, telling the fighter he just beat that “I admire you.”

Though the fight was for a 160-pound title it was fought at a catch weight of 155 pounds. Alvarez weighed exactly that the day before the fight, but after rehydrating ap-peared much larger in the ring than did Cotto, who was 153 1/2 pounds at the official weigh-in.

Alvarez was a 3-1 favorite com-ing into the bout, largely because he is 10 years younger than Cotto and a bigger puncher. The ages didn’t seem to make a difference, but the ringside judges were surely influenced by the harder punches that the red-headed Alvarez landed. Cotto was credited with throwing 629 punches to 484 for Alvarez, but Alvarez landed 155 to 129 for Cotto.

Cotto had vowed to pull the upset by using his boxing skills, and at times he was quite effective. But by the third round, Alvarez was land-ing some of the big punches he was winging at Cotto. The fight was the latest in the boxing rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico. Alvarez, from Mexico, was the clear favorite of the crowd at the Mandalay Bay ca-sino. But Cotto was competitive and a lot of the early rounds were close.

The action picked up in the eighth round, with both fighters trading punches. Again, Alvarez landed the harder shots, using his uppercut effectively and shaking Cotto with punches to the head. Cotto, who earned $15 million, fell to 40-5, while Alvarez improved to 46-1-1.

In a wild fight on the undercard, Francisco Vargas seemed to be taking a beating and was half blinded before coming back to stop Takashi Miura of Japan at 1:31 of the ninth round.

Vargas won a piece of the 130-pound title, but paid a price to do it. He was knocked down once and stag-gered at the end of the eighth round, and the ring doctor looked closely at his swollen right eye before allowing the fight to continue in the ninth.

When it did, Vargas landed a sud-den right and left that knocked Miura down. He followed it by chasing the champion around the ring, finally landing a series of shots to the head that prompted the referee to step in and stop the bout. Vargas, of Mexico, improved to 23-0-1, while Miura fell to 29-3-2.(ap)

CLEVELAND — Cleveland beat Atlanta 109-97 on Saturday in a reprise of last season’s NBA Eastern Conference finals, and Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer was ejected for making contact with an official.

The Cavaliers took control mid-way through the first quarter and quickly built a double-digit lead en route to a victory that built their lead in the Central Division while dropping the Hawks out of top spot in the Southeast.

Among other games, San An-tonio continued its strong home form by beating Memphis and New York ended its long run of losses to Houston by beating the slumping Rockets. Cleveland’s Kevin Love scored a season-high 25 points and LeBron James added 19 in the first game against Atlanta since the Cavaliers swept the Hawks in the East finals last season.

Hawks coach Budenholzer was given a technical for arguing a call in the second quarter, and stepped onto the floor where he bumped referee Ben Taylor and was ejected. San Antonio made it six straight home wins by downing Memphis 92-82, with Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker scoring 19 and 18 points respectively. After conced-ing the opening score of the game, the Spurs led throughout.

Neither team had its starting power forward. LaMarcus Aldridge was a late scratch with a sprained left ankle, his first missed game with San Antonio. Memphis’ Zach Randolph was in uniform, but did not play in his second straight game due to right knee soreness.

New York ended a run of 11 con-secutive losses to Houston — and ten straight defeats in the Texan city — with a 107-102 victory.

Kristaps Porzingis had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Knicks who have eight wins before the end of November, whereas last season they didn’t get their eighth win until late January. James Harden had 24 points and 10 assists for the Rock-ets, who have lost six of seven.

Detroit’s Marcus Morris missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer, and that allowed Washington to hang on for a 97-95 road victory.

The Wizards had the ball and a two-point lead with 9.2 seconds left, but Otto Porter was called for a five-second violation on the in-bound attempt. That gave Detroit a last chance, but Morris missed.

Nene scored 18 points and Porter added 17 for Washington, which got 51 points from bench players compared to just 15 by Detroit’s reserves. Reggie Jackson led the Pistons with 20 points and nine assists.(ap)

Alvarez takes middle-weight title over Cotto

LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez made a case for himself as boxing’s next star Saturday night, landing the bigger punches to take a unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto and win a piece of the middleweight title. Alvarez took the fight to Cotto from the opening bell, winning rounds with big right hands and up-percuts. Cotto tried to box and had his moments, but Alvarez was clearly ahead as the crowd stood on its feet as both fighters traded punches in the final rounds.

It was the first time since February 2003 that City

had conceded three before the interval in a league fixture. “It was very, very good. We took our chanc-es and made brilliant goals in the counterat-tack,” Klopp said.

“With results like this the boys will start to believe

in themselves and that’s very important,” Klopp added fol-

lowing a result that moves h i s side to within six points of a

Champions League berth.First-half goals from Brazil-

ian duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino stunned the hosts which had fallen behind af-

ter Eliaquim Mangala put through his own net.

Firmino enjoyed his best performance in a red shirt since joining the club from German side Hoffenheim for a reported fee of 29 million pounds ($45.8 million). And he was flanked by compatriot Coutinho, who continues to thrive under Klopp. The pair were involved in all three goals as Liverpool es-tablished a firm hold on the game.

Coutinho dispossessed Bacary Sagna inside the City half before racing toward goal. He fed Firmino whose cross was mistakenly converted by Mangala inside the opening ten minutes. Liverpool doubled

their advantage in the 23rd with Firmino once again

the provider. He picked out Coutinho in the box, who side-footed past Joe Hart.

Firmino was eventually rewarded with his first goal in a red shirt following a superb team goal. With his back towards play, Emre Can picked out Coutinho. The German’s backheel pass was ushered into Firmino, for the simplest of finishes.

Fit-again striker Sergio Aguero pulled one back shortly before the interval, curling a splendid effort beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini made two changes at the interval with the momentum having slightly shifted in his side’s favor following Aguero’s strike. Midfielders Fernandinho and Fabian Delph re-placed Jesus Navas and Yaya Toure in a move that saw City exert early pressure.

However, the visitors defended in large numbers and continued to use the counterattack to full effect. Firmino should have netted his second on the hour-mark after another break but Hart foiled his effort.

Substitute Christian Benteke was also denied by Hart after being played through by Jordan Ibe. From the resulting corner defender Martin Skrtel thumped in the fourth as Liverpool registered its biggest win of the season.

Former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling was ineffective in his first game against his former side following his acrimonious summer move away from Anfield.

“Today we did it all wrong. Individual performances, in the way we defend, in the way we attack. It was a really fake game for us. It’s not normal (for us) to play in this way,” Pellegrini said.

City slipped to third on 26 points, two adrift of new league leader Leicester, while Liverpool move up to

ninth with 20 points. (ap)

TURIN, Italy — Juventus continued to climb up the Serie A table as it beat AC Milan 1-0 to string together three consecutive Serie A wins for the first time this season.

Paulo Dybala scored the only goal in a sellout at the Juventus Stadium on Saturday, where there was increased security a week after the deadly attacks in Paris that took 130 lives and left hundreds more injured.

Earlier, Mattia Destro came back to haunt his old side as he scored a late penalty to help Bologna draw 2-2 against title-chasing Roma in Serie A. Roma moved provisionally level on points with table-topping Fiorentina and Inter Milan, while Bologna inched two points clear of the relegation zone.

Juventus leapfrogged Milan, moving a point above the Rossoneri and six below the top three. “It wasn’t a good game,” Juven-tus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “We struggled to find space in the first half but the team was solid.

“It was important to win the third match and go above Milan. I would say that tonight even though we’re still a long way from the top I’m happy.”

Fans and players alike applauded during the French national anthem in Turin and Bologna. Juventus players Paul Pogba and Patrice Evra were playing for France in the friendly international against Germany at the Stade de France when explosions took place across Paris.

There was heightened security in Turin, which is located little more than an hour’s drive from the French border. Madonna was also playing in Turin this weekend and Italian Premier Matteo Renzi was in the city.

As well as extra police, with sniffer dogs and a bomb disposal car nearby, there were also 650 stewards — more than for a derby match. How-ever, neither the stewards nor the police seemed worried, with one policeman telling The Associ-ated Press “it’s the ordinary in the non ordinary.” Fans appeared unperturbed too.

“I’m not scared at all,” Juventus season ticket holder Luca Marchesi said. “I think it would be excessive if they hit a football match. I mean anything is excessive, but es-pecially sport. I know they attacked the Stade de France but the French President was there. Renzi isn’t here (at the stadium).

“I really don’t think anything will happen. I hope not! And I hope that’s not famous last words! But in any case you can’t just stay at home. That would be giving in.”

Most fans told The Associated Press they weren’t worried at all and “if it happens then that’s destiny” but it was not going to stop them from following their passion and continuing with normal life.

“We thought for about five seconds about not coming!” Milan supporter Francesco Artioli said. “In seriousness, my friend called me on Thursday and we talked about it a bit but then decided to come.

“There are so many checks so I don’t think anything will happen. They would try somewhere with less checks, to catch people by surprise. I would be more worried about going to the supermarket. Let me put it this

way, my sister is here too and my mum is not worried about us at all.”

Nothing was left to chance, however, and even journalists were screened with metal detectors, had to give up plastic bottles and even lighters, rather than walking straight in after showing their accreditation. There was no incident off the pitch, and little on it in a drab first half.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made his Serie A debut 20 years ago this week, four years before Milan counterpart Gianluigi Donnarumma was born. The two swapped shirts after the match and the World Cup-winning Italy goalkeeper hugged the Milan teenager.

Donnarumma has been likened to Buffon and the Milan teen proved he could live up to that comparison with a fantastic flying save to prevent Hernanes’s deflected free kick from going into the top corner four minutes from halftime.

Evra went off injured in the first half while Hernanes did not return after the interval, and both will be doubtful for Juve’s Champions League match against Manchester City on Wednesday. Pogba almost broke the dead-lock on the hour mark but Donnarumma parried his long-range effort.

Juventus did take the lead five minutes later when Dybala chested down Alex Sandro’s cross from the left and smashed it in on the half volley from close range.

“It was an ugly match,” Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic said. “We did well defen-sively but did hardly anything in attack. We made several mistakes. We can certainly do better. (ap)

MADRID — Luis Suarez scored twice and Neymar added a goal and an assist to lead Bar-celona to an emphatic 4-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first “clasico” of the season on Saturday, leaving its rival under increased pressure from the home fans.

The commanding victory gave Barcelona a six-point lead in the Spanish league standings, and halted Madrid’s 22-game unbeaten streak at home in the league. Barcelona played most of the match without Lionel Messi, who came off the bench in the 56th minute after being sidelined for nearly two months because of a left knee injury.

“It was a memorable game, it will go down in history,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “It’s our eternal rival. It’s not always that you can win with such superiority. “We were better,” he said. “I’m satisfied not just for the victory, but for the way we did it.”

Real Madrid fans loudly jeered their team after the loss, its fourth in the last five games against Barcelona. Fans waved white hand-kerchiefs — a gesture of goodbye aimed at Madrid coach Rafa Benitez — and called for the resignation of president Florentino Perez. In a sign of Barcelona’s dominance, the scorer of the third goal, Andres Iniesta, was applauded by some Madrid fans when he was substituted in the second half.

“We played a very complete game in every sense, when it came to holding the ball or to look for an advantage up front,” Iniesta said. “We gave them few chances and didn’t lose the ball much, something that can generate problems for us. We have been effective and played a very good match here.”

Real Madrid played the final minutes with 10 men as Francisco Alarcon “Isco” was sent off after a hard foul on Neymar in the 85th.

“It hurts a lot to lose this way, especially to Barcelona,” Benitez said. “We made too many mistakes and when you play against a very good team like Barcelona you end up paying for them. The only thing we can do now is continue to work hard and see how we can improve for the next match. It’s a long tournament and we have to try to recover these six points.” It was the second consecutive loss for Real Madrid after an unbeaten start to its season, and the seventh straight win for Barcelona.

There were unprecedented security measures in place after the attacks in Paris last week, with nearly 3,000 policemen and private security of-ficers working to maintain public safety at the 81,000-capacity stadium. There was a minute of silence in honor of the victims in Paris, and a large French flag was displayed across some of the lower fan sections as the players lined up at midfield before kickoff.

Barcelona reached 30 points from 12 matches, while Madrid remained with 24 points. Madrid needed to win to pull even with its rival in points and return to the top of the standings on goal difference. Third-place Atletico Madrid, which plays at Real Betis on Sunday, is one point behind Real Madrid and seven behind Barcelona.

Barcelona was in control during most of the game and never gave Madrid many chances to score. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema

and Gareth Bale did not have any impact on the game.

Suarez and Neymar, meanwhile, continued to improve on their incredible scoring streak — the South American duo has scored 23 of the team’s 27 goals since Messi got injured. It was Suarez’s seventh and eighth goals in the last five games, and Neymar’s sixth in the last four games. Neymar leads the league with 12 goals, one more than Suarez.

Messi recovered from a left knee injury but started the clasico on the bench because he was not yet 100 percent fit. The Argentine playmaker had missed the last nine Barcelona games.

Suarez opened the scoring in the 11th after receiving a perfect pass by Sergi Roberto behind the defenders. He used the outside of his right foot to quickly fire a firm low shot into the far corner, giving no chance to Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Neymar increased the lead from close range in the 39th after a through ball by Iniesta. The Brazilian controlled the ball inside the area and sent it into the net with a low left-footed shot underneath Navas, who touched the ball but couldn’t completely block the shot. Replays showed that Neymar appeared to be slightly offside when he received Iniesta’s pass.

Iniesta scored the third with a powerful strike into the top of the net after receiving a back-heel pass from Neymar just inside the box in the 53rd, and Suarez closed the scoring from in front of the goal after being set up by Jordi Alba in the 74th.

Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo came up with big saves in the few chances created by Real Madrid, including a couple by the lackluster Ronaldo. (ap)

PARIS - Paris St Germain took another step towards a fourth straight Ligue 1 title when they beat Lorient 2-1 away on Saturday with goals by Hervin Ongenda and Blaise Matuidi on an emotional afternoon eight days after the Paris attacks.

The capital side have 38 points from 14 games and lead second-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Nice on

Friday, by a massive 13 points after a routine win.

League top scorer Benjamin Moukandjo reduced the arrears late on as Lorient stayed seventh on 20 points. There was a release of doves and a minute’s silence before kickoff to honour the 130 victims of last week’s Paris attacks on bars, restaurants, a concert hall and a soccer stadium.

“France suffers but does not

die,” read a banner in the stands at Lorient’s Stade du Moustoir, where the crowd sang the French national anthem.

The Marseillaise was played in all stadiums in France on the first round of Ligue 1 matches since the attacks.

“It’s a good result, we’re on a good run,” PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. “Even if the context was tough, as you know, we can

be satisfied tonight. But I’m eager to get back to Paris and be with my family.”

With PSG comfortably top of the league, Laurent Blanc gave Ongenda his first start this season and the 20-year-old striker did not disappoint in the absence of the in-jured Angel Di Maria, David Luiz, Marco Verratti, Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

He tapped the ball home in the

26th minute from Gregory van der Wiel’s cross as the visitors took a deserved lead.

Ongenda then played a one-two with Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose cross was netted by Matuidi from point-blank range in the 32nd.

Moukandjo leapfrogged Ibra-himovic at the top of the scoring charts by heading home his 10th goal of the s\eason from Romain Philippoteaux’s cross. (rtr)

(rtr)

(ap)

BUSINESS

(kmb32)

(ap)

(kmb42)

(ap)

THE PLAN to include Besakih in the Na-tional Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) has

been revoked by the governor of Bali and it has been submitted to the Ministry of Tour-ism. Other than Besakih, two other areas excluded from the Government Regulation

No. 50/2011 on the KSPN are the West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island.“The governor as a representation of Ba-

linese people has appointed the representative figures of Bali having credibility and loyalty to Bali and com-mitment to preserving Bali. They have decided the three areas of KSPN in Bali should be revoked and the governor has submitted it to the Ministry of Tourism. So, it has become a final decision of Balinese community to reject the KSPN of Besakih, West Bali National Park and Men-jangan Island,” he affirmed in the Bali Bicara program at Bale Banjar Bali Global Shankara organized by Bali TV in collaboration with the Mark Plus Center for Tourism and Hospitality.

The program hosted by Hermawan Kartajaya discussed about the KSPN and Tri Hita Karana (THK). “The determination session by the UNESCO will be made on December 1-2, 2015. We sincerely hope the nine dances can be set as the World Cultural Heritage so

that it will not be easily claimed by other parties,” said the Head of Bali Culture Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha recently.

Beratha added that Bali will send

three dancers to the session. The three dancers are going to present nine dances having been previously proposed. Their departure will be accompanied by a lecturer from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Prof. I Wayan Dibia.

“If the nine dances have got determination from the UNESCO, it will become the obligation of all parties in Bali to take care of them,” he continued.

Beratha added that on October 20, the nine dances already got the certificate of Immaterial Cul-tural Heritage of Indonesia handed over by the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education and Culture Anies Baswedan. At that time, Bali received certificate of the Immate-rial Cultural Heritage of Indonesia for the 12 cultural products. Nine of them are dances and three others are cultural products in the form
