LIGHTWEIGHT SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY 2030
Project made 1st semester 2011 at Umeå Institute of Design. The project were made with Kiska and supervised by Christof Täubl.
How can we make differences and design vehicles locally in a global context?

ARTIFICIAL PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Artificial photosynthesis is a chemical process that replicates the natural process of photosynthesis, a process that converts sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates and oxygen which can be stored with photoelectrochemistry into fuel cells.
GREEN ALGAE BATTERIES
Cellulose and polymere batteries made of the green algae (Cladopho-ra) mixed with salt water as an electrolyte. (Cladophora glomerata). Because of very large surface of the algaes nano structure which the thin layer of polymere are covering the weight become almost nothing.

Soundscape is making the vehicle more transparent by amplifying, selecting and adjusting the sound from outside, depending on customers choice and driving conditions.
SOUNDSCAPE CONCEPT
ORDINARY VEHICLE
Hearing is an important sense for orientation, it is fair to ask the question if hearing is disregarded in todays cars simply because the technology has been polluted by noise. Bang & Olufsen oers high fidelity sound environments, what would happen if this environment would enable people to form relationships outside of the car?
Bang & Olufsen Soundscapes aims to use the full potential of an automotive high-end audio system, bridging to a natural dynamic context. Allowing driver and passengers to become intuned and explore the environment, making the car transparent through sound.

Exploration enables the user to actively explore sounds from outside.
The system makes the driver faster aware of sounds from emergency vehicles etc.
Experience unintrusively bridges the exterior landscape and creates an auditory connection, tuning in with the environment.

FUNCTIONALITY
Erik Melldahl - Portfolio 2014
A large part of concept exploration was enabled in collaboration with a friend and interaction student, Linus persson.
We build a 1:1 scale sound isolated cabin representing an car interior. linus installed and programmed a 4.2 surround system with many parameters which enabled adjustment. by connecting sensors such as microphones, touch and distance aecting the sound we now had the possibility to test dierent scenarios when bringing the sound from outside to inside the car.
1:1 scale mock-up
Erik Melldahl - Portfolio 2014
I build a physical representation of the control and linus installed touch sensors so the driver interface could be tested as well inside the mockup.
The Soundscape Control used by driver is a smaller representation of the exterior outer surface.
This control is allowing same functionality as for passengers.

This 14 weeks project was a coolaboration with Volkswagen spring 2012 at Umeå Institute of Design. My approach was to design a car for Volkswagen which easily could be produce within a few years and be a additional vehicle in their already big range of models.

A big tank for long distance races and a rugged frame was the core elements in the design. The hub engine placed at the rear tire was something that func-tionally is good when driving at places where mud and sand can get stuck in the machinery and it looks cool. The frame is inspired from the athlets where the structure of the bike looks like a powerful leg full of muscles.
