From the Director’s Desk, Matt WomackWe’re always looking for new ways to provide engaging experiences for our residents and local businesses. That’s why we’ve brought in telescopes, 3D printers, robotics kits, fishing poles, sewing machines and Go-Pro cameras: to give you an opportunity to experience something new.

Another way we foster new experiences is through exhibits. This fall we will host the exhibit “The Moon: Cosmic Decoder Ring.” Featuring a 3D experience (see page 13), this exhibit is the first of many planned over the next few years.

In 2017 we will feature two exhibits – Eric Carle’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear to commemorate its 50th anniversary and “On the Trail of the Monarch Butterfly.”

In the fall of 2019, we will host a major 7,000 square foot exhibit “Dinosaur Discovery: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas” from the American Museum of Natural History. It features touchable fossil casts, interviews with scientists and scale models of dinosaurs. It’s safe to say that you’ll see and hear more about this exhibit in the months ahead.

What do you see when you look at the Moon? Most people see circles, large and small, bright and dark. What caused them?

Coinciding with International Observe the Moon Night on October 3, this exhibit on loan from The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) and the Johnson Space Center (JSC) explores how the Moon’s craters have helped scientists decode and understand the planets in our solar system. Learn about the Moon’s surface, how craters have uncovered other ancient surfaces of the solar system and what scientists are studying to piece together the history of catastrophic collisions in our solar system.

The panel exhibit features 3D visuals of the planets to add new dimensions to the visitor experience. 3D glasses are provided.

Did You Know?Craters are the most common surface feature on many solid planets and moons—Mercury and our Moon are covered with craters. The Moon is

covered by numerous circular holes. These are impact craters, each of which was formed when an asteroid or comet collided with the Moon’s surface. When there is enough force, the impact throws large amounts of material outward leaving rays.

In the photo above, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft Narrow Angle cameras captured the spectacular sunrise view of the mountainous peaks in the center of the Tycho impact crater. Tycho Crater is 83 km in diameter and surrounded by bright white rays of ejected rock that are visible from your own backyard. The crater is several times deeper than the Grand Canyon and its central peak is a significantly higher prominence than Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains.Detail from LROC NAC image M162350671L,R Image credit: NASA/GSFC/Arizona State UniversityLunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. In 2012, she was shot in the head while riding the bus home from school; and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an

extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education, and of a father who championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school.

symptoms worsen, he struggles to maintain hope and a sense of purpose, while his children must find the courage to either live a life at risk or learn their fate.

Kitchen of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan StradalWhen Lars Thorvald’s wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine and a dashing sommelier, he’s left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. Library outreach is nothing new to our community. For decades, the Library has supported organizations and residents within our district, whether it’s through programming, extending services or lending materials.

Homebound DeliveryCan’t come to the Library? We can bring it to you! Thanks to the help of volunteer drivers, this program opens up our collection to those who cannot come to the Library in person. Whether it’s because of a temporary disability or some other reason, we can deliver a wide variety of materials on a schedule that works for you.

Reading Groups for Seniors and Special PopulationsOutreach Services provides book talks for several discussion groups and special populations in the area. The Lexington Read-Aloud group has been going strong for over 20 years. Dedicated Library volunteers lead this weekly read-aloud held at the facility. Co-sponsored with Ela Township, the Senior Book Discussion group meets the fourth Monday of each month at the Library. New this year is a book discussion group at Zurich Meadows Apartments for residents. Outreach Services also visits Mount St. Joseph and Queen of Peace monthly bringing a variety of materials for residents to borrow. Magnifiers, Talking Books and MoreStruggling with vision loss? We can help! New to the Library and located on the first floor, the Magnisight Explorer HD is a low vision magnifier capable of enlarging text or other images from 2X to 70X magnification. Need something portable? There are several handheld magnifiers available for check out for home use. The Illinois Talking Book program is another excellent option for those with low vision. The program provides qualified patrons a player and digitally recorded books delivered right to your door at no charge. Ideal candidates are patrons who can no longer read large print text or are unable to hold a book due to a physical disability. Contact Outreach Services at (847) 438-3433 x140 for more information.

November’s artist Scott Kiefer graduated with a degree in commercial art and began his art career at Block Studio in Chicago where he mastered pen and ink drawing. In the mid-1980s after taking several printmaking courses at Triton College, Kiefer transitioned from pen and ink to intaglio etching. These classes introduced Kiefer to etching, drypoint and monotype painting. A new job at fine printer Black Box Collotype introduced Kiefer to four-color separation and the use of graphic programs

to produce his etchings. In 2001, Kiefer purchased his own medium-sized etching press and converted a room in his apartment into a printing studio to perfect his etching technique.

Kiefer exhibits and sells limited edition prints all over the Chicago area. His work has won numerous art awards. Contact him at Kiefer Prints on Facebook.
