Archaeologists said theyhad unearthed the ruins of avilla believed to be thebirthplace of a RomanEmperor who reigned almost2,000 years ago.

Professor FilippoCoarelli, who is leading thedig, said “numerous clues”pointed to the site as the houseof Emperor Vespasian, whoruled the Roman Empire from69 AD to 79 AD.

The location of the villa,in the ancient city ofFalacrine, 70 kilometres (45miles) northeast of Rome, was a strong indicator thatthe site was where the rulerwas born, Coarelli added.

Vespasian was born in thecity, which was lost until2005 when archaelogistslocated the site and beganexcavating it.

In addition, the luxuriousproperty could only havebeen built by a wealthyperson such as the father ofVespasian, who was a bankerfrom the region, thearchaeologists said.

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Tuesday, 11 August, 2009

Now, is a critical moment in the transitionalperiod from old system into democracy to satisfy thewishes of the entire people. The improvement infundamental requirements such as State stabilityand peace, security, transport, education, healthcare, and economy is sufficient enough for demo-cratic transition. In addition, the State constitution, which is a must for the drive, has been approved withthe support of the great majority of the voters. Thereis only one thing to be realized to complete theprocess—to keep on marching in harmony along thepaved way to democracy which is the most appropri-ate and safest one for the nation and the people.

The government is working hard to completethe transition to democracy as soon as possible, andthe people cannot wait to build a democratic nation, making good use of peace and stability. The entirepeople are looking forward to the multiparty democ-racy election due to be held in 2010 and the newgovernment to be formed democratically. The ulti-mate goal is now within the touching distance, so thepeople cannot let any forms of situations that candisrupt the proceedings. The real desire of thepeople is that the democratic process goes smoothlyand steadily, while they are leading a peaceful lifeand getting on with their businesses. The people whofavour democracy do not want to see riots andprotests that can harm their goal.

Nevertheless, some persons who do not wantnational interest are resorting to a variety of meansto disrupt the national goal, taking full advantage ofthe trial against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The casewill be pronounced according to the law. Anti-government groups inside and outside the nationand the US are accusing the government of deterringDaw Aung San Suu Kyi from standing for election.Personally, I do not think they are right. The ap-proved constitution and the forthcoming electionlaw will decide who will be entitled and who will notbe entitled to stand for election.

Certain power countries, organizations andsubversives are demanding that Daw Aung San SuuKyi should be released unconditionally and shouldhave the right to stand for election. A so-calledveteran local politician once made a comment that itwas needed to have dialogue with Daw Aung SanSuu Kyi and she be released sooner for the purpose. In order to defend himself against possible criticism,he also said that his words were not associated withpersonality cult, but my feeling is that his wordswere somewhat extreme.

Since Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s case was putoff, internal and external organizations and somepersons have been generating public outrage andpersuading the people to take to the streets on the daythe court delivers the final judgment if she faces apunishment. What is their motive? Is it good or bad?The nation’s future will be good only if the peopleare capable enough of assessing their motive.

Today, the government is implementing demo-cratic process step by step in compliance with thedesire of the people. In that regard, the governmenthas to take time and great care because it is not asmall matter. It prioritizes a brighter future of the

Visualize, ponder over and do goodKo Thaya

nation, taking into consideration all forms of possibleharms in order to ensure enduing democracy. Demo-cratic process calls for good foundations in all sectors.Despite a large range of destructive activities, democ-ratization has been completed nearly cent per cent.

However, certain politicians are claiming that theupcoming election will be a fair one only if their partycomes to power, their leader is the leader of the Stateand their party forms a governing body. Actually, theirbehaviours serve as a great hindrance to the nationalgoal. If a person wants to practise politics, he shouldfocus on long-term, rather than short-term interest ofthe nation. He should stand for objective conditions inthe interest of the nation and the people. He shouldunderstand and respect the public desire.

Their mistakes will go further if they continueto act to the liking of certain powerful countries, placing reliance on external elements. They shouldhave taken lessons from the past historic events. What is the real attitude of the foreign countriesthey rely on, and what have they done in the interestof the motherland? Frankly, they are trying tomake our country a neo-colony. All they are doingin complicity is none other than to help the person, who will dance to their tune, come to power. Fallingto alien subjugation is not the only way of beingenslaved. The people can also be slaves if any personwho complies with their instructions comes to power. That is a point worthy of serious consideration.

All persons wishing to rule the nation shouldnotice such a small point. Article (59) of the StateConstitution adopted in the National Convention bypeople’s representatives says “The President and Vice-Presidents shall be well acquainted with the affairs ofthe Union such as political, administrative, economicand military”. Without these qualifications, any personshould not enter into politics. Otherwise, Myanmarwill follow Iraq and Afghanistan.

The super power is meddling in the world affairs inorder that no other country will be able to vie with it. Itis also attempting to oppress the countries that aremaking themselves stronger, as testified by its stanceand attitude towards Asian giants. It is claiming peace, freedom and human rights, but its real intention is tostrengthen its hegemony over the whole world. Thecountry that commits human right violation is themajor power itself. It is committing human right viola-tion variously such as invading Iraq, torturing andkilling innocent people in Iraq, Afghanistan, andGuantanamo prison.

Now, it is eyeing Myanmar which is geographi-cally strategic in Asia, and it is anxious to install apuppet government in Myanmar in order to expand itsmilitary power in Asia. If the people carry on work-ing together, Myanmar will soon see a democraticgovernment that is well resistant to alien interfer-ence. Then, things will go against what it hasintended, and it cannot let such conditions comeinto force. Therefore, it is using all possible waysand means to disrupt the 2010 election. In collu-sion with destructive elements outside the nation,it is deceiving the people into staging mass pro-tests. It is aiding and abetting anti-governmentgroups. It is generating popular outrage in orderthat the people will take wrong way and divertthemselves from the correct path.

They are provoking riots, destabilizing the coun-try, sowing hatred among the people, making goodthings happen in reverse, destroying national achieve-ments, and troubling the people. Only then will it bepossible for it to deepen the poverty of the people. Ifso things will favour it to intrude on the nation and itwill never withdraw from Myanmar.

So, it is high time the entire people remainedunited and warded off various types of dangersand made preparations for a proserous future ofthe nation. If the people let themselves to be swayedby their instigation and peace and stability aredeteriorating, democratic process will be far be-hind the goal. Besides, the future of the nation andthe people will be uncertain.

The government will never let disappear thedemocratic transition from sight. It will never let thenational goal divert from its course. It will continue tosee to the national goal, wiping out all forms ofdestructive acts. And it will never let the mothercountry see 1988 unrest-like affairs, nor will thepeople. The people wish to see further peace andstability.

So, they should have stopped creating publicoutrage that can grow into mass demonstrations. Thepeople do not want the situations that force the nationto restart the democratic process from the beginning.Their incitements will never benefit the people, buttrouble those who believe the incitements hopefully. They should have given up their campaigns that haveadverse effects on the people. I would like to suggestthat every politician visualize the future of the nation, ponder over and serve the interest of the nation.
