Environmental Farm PlanEnvironmental farm planning is a voluntary process that producers can use to identify both environmental strengths and any potential risks on their farms. If needed, an action plan is developed to reduce risks. This national program is administered in B.C. through the B.C. Agriculture Council. This logo recognizes that the farm has completed its environmental plan.

B.C. Certified OrganicThe B.C. Certified Organic Program is a voluntary agri-food quality program sanctioned by the B.C. government (www.gov.bc.ca/agri). It is administered through the Certified Organic Association of B.C. (COABC). Farms that meet the standards for production, processing and handling are eligible to use the term B.C. Certified Organic and the symbol checkmark in a box.

Verified Beef ProgramVBP is a national on-farm food safety program for beef producers in Canada. A farm registered with VBP has demonstrated through an audit that their food safety practices conform to program requirements. This program is based on the world recognized food safety standard known as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control point) and is designed to help producers prevent, monitor and reduce food safety risks on their beef cattle farms.

B.C. AgriTourism Alliance Quality Assurance ProgramThis program has been developed in consultation with agritourism operators to establish consistent, quality agritourism experiences throughout B.C. Once an operation becomes accredited by BCATA, an excellent insurance program and provincial highway road signage are available. For more information check our website at: www.bcagritourism.ca.

The Farm Fresh Guide is a co-operative effort of the Kamloops Daily News and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture.

The Farm Fresh team acknowledges the many small business owners who

recognize the value of supplying fresh, local produce and meats to area residents. As well, a special thank you goes out to various restaurant owners who have begun to search out local products for their menus.

Finally, thank you to all the producers and commercial advertisers that have supported this publication, and to you, the consumer for supporting our local producers.

FISHERMANS CATCH WILD BC SALMON & SALES

Danny Arundel/Kelsey Kashluba9320 Yellowhead Hwy S, Heffley Creek, BC, V0E 1Z2Phone: 250-320-4449E-mail: [email protected] you need to ask your fish vendor. Do you know where your salmon comes from? Ocean or River? What’s the difference? Which is better? How was it caught? How was it handled? Who caught it? Tanya-Ray is a 42’ troller. The son of a fisherman, Danny Arundel has explored our BC coastline on a commercial fish boat over the past 50 years. Our WILD Salmon is caught in the Pacific Ocean on a barbless hook and line and brought onto the boat one fish at a time. The salmon are cleaned and flash frozen (temperatures of -40C) aboard ship within one hour of catch to lock in Quality and Freshness thus providing product to be savored throughout the year. This process ensures the absolute #1 BEST quality of salmon available to the consumer. TUNA-KING is our Tuna boat, and will be fishing up to 200 miles offshore of our BC Coast for albacore tuna starting June 15. Our product is direct from the fisherman to the consumer. Come see us at the Kamloops Farmers Market on Saturdays, Sun Peaks on Sundays, and at the Vernon and Kelowna Farmers Markets.

Agriculture in British Columbia is characterized by its diversity. Some of the activities carried out by provincial farmers include: dairy farming, cattle-

ranching, poultry raising, and the growing of grain, tree fruits, vegetables, berries, grapes, greenhouse vegetables, mushrooms, bulbs, ornamental flowers and shrubs.

More than 80 species of finfish, shellfish and marine •plants are grown, harvested and marketed by B.C.'s seafood industry.

A British Columbian eats more mushrooms than anyone •else in Canada. Each person eats about 3 kg per year, while the average Canadian eats only 2 kg per year.

Apples are the most valuable edible horticulture •crop in BC. About 75% of all BC orchard land is planted in apples.

BC is one of the top three blueberry producing regions in •the world. In the last 10 or 15 years, per capita consumption of blueberries has doubled.

Potatoes are the most grown vegetable in the world. In •BC, there are more potatoes grown than any other vegetable.

Although raspberries can be grown in all of the Canadian •provinces, BC accounts for almost the entire annual Canadian production of raspberries.

BC grows about 95% of the cranberries grown in Canada •and is the world’s third largest producer after Massachusetts and Wisconsin.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE KAMLOOPS FOOD SYSTEMS PROJECTS:Kamloops Regional Farmer’s Markets - Saturday markets are in the 200 block of St Paul St. from 8 AM - Noon, April 20th to October 26th. Meet your local producers, enjoy community spirit and good food in the Stuart Wood schoolyard. Wednesday markets are in the 400 block of Victoria St (in front of the TNRD Library) from 8 AM - 2 PM, May 1st to October 30th. www.kamloopsfarmersmarket.com

Public produce initiatives grow healthy, nutritious food on publicly accessible lands such as boulevards, right-of-ways, schoolyards and in publicly accessible gardens. This year, Kamloops is growing free produce in two sites – at the corner of Elm & Tranquille St. and at the community garden in McDonald Park, both on the North Shore. Workshops on food growing topics run throughout the season. For example, a free workshop on Medicinal Herbs is offered on June 29, 2013 at 1:00PM in McDonald Park. If you or your organization or business would like to grow public produce contact us for more information. Volunteers are always welcome. www.publicproduceproject.blogspot.ca

Community Gardens have expanded rapidly in Kamloops. To secure

a spot in a community garden and to learn how to start one in your neighborhood, contact Interior Community Services at 250-554-3134. www.interiorcommunityservices.bc.ca/programs/community-gardens

Gardengate operates a greenhouse, vegetable garden and a kitchen classroom in Brocklehurst. Participants increase their food security by being able to take home organic produce in exchange for helping in the garden. This project supplies food to several Kamloops groups including Food Share and Community Kitchens. www.opendoorgroup.org/gardengate.php

Community Kitchens are a key component in food security. For low cost, anybody participating can learn to plan, purchase and prepare meals. During harvest time, community kitchens teach how to preserve foods by canning, drying and freezing. To participate contact Interior Community Services at 250-554-3134. www.interiorcommunityservices.bc.ca/programs/community-kitchens

KAMLOOPS FooD PoLICY CounCIL

For nearly 20 years, the Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) has been providing guidance and implementing actions to improve food security in

the Kamloops area. Food security means that everyone in our community can access and afford to eat healthy foods. People are food insecure when they can’t afford or get the foods they need to live healthy and active lifestyles.

As the first food policy council in Canada, KFPC has

provided local and national leadership in the development of food policy and best practices in urban agriculture. It acts as a communications forum for locally developed food systems that increase our resilience to climate change, reduce competition for global food resources and lower the need for costly packaging and transportation of food.

Buying locally grown and locally raised foods is healthier for our community. The longer produce

spends in transport or sits on a grocery store shelf, the more nutrients it loses. In contrast, local produce is ripe and fresh. Get to know your local farmers. Many of them use organic or other sustainable agriculture methods that further reduce the impact on the environment and improve food quality.

For more information on the Kamloops Food Policy Council, contact Laura Kalina at [email protected].
