Editors Letter...

Who would believe we would be

basking in the Sun at the beginning of

October and wrapping up in our

woollies as we experienced our first

frost by the end of it? Unbelievable!

This months Arrow has lots of school news from

all three primaries in Branton and Auckley who

have clearly started the new term running. Auckley

Pre School celebrated its 40th Anniversary this

month and what a lovely day they had. All the

nursery staff were there to celebrate, including

those from 40 years ago! What a proud day for

them all.

Auckley Parish Hall are hosting an NHS Free

Health check day in November for 40 to 70 year

olds, the details are in the Arrow, make sure you

book your appointment or drop in on the day, it

will only take twenty minutes of your time and is

confidential.

Kilham Hall are having their first Halloween party

for children in the village and we will have some

photographs from the event in next months

Arrow. Mr Dan will be there to entertain the

children and they will all experience his new Punch

and Judy show. We have an interview in this

months Arrow where we find out a little bit more

about the famous and popular Mr Dan.

Guy Fawkes night falls on a Saturday this year so I

hope everyone enjoys a safe and exciting weekend

where I am sure the villages will become an

explosion of sound and colour. Just remember to

keep your pets indoors and maybe invest in some

sedatives from your vet to help keep them calm!

Don‘t forget, clocks go back an hour on Sunday

30th at 2am.

The deadline for the December issue will be

Wednesday 16th November. The December issue

will be distributed from Friday 28th November.

Best Wishes

AUCKLEY ST SAVIOUR’S

PARISH CHURCH

FLOWER FESTIVAL AND

HARVEST WEEKEND

During the weekend of 24 & 25 September a lot of

very busy people transformed the inside of St

Saviour‘s Church with beautiful flowers, foliage and

wonderful fresh produce to make a most eye-

catching and mouth-watering display of god‘s gifts

to us. The theme for the Flower Festival

arrangements was ‗book titles‘. More than a

dozen displays were made, from the most

imaginative titles, ranging from Harry Potters Goblet

of Fire, Rapunzel and The Secret Garden, to All

Creatures Great and Small, which fitted in rather

nicely with the Harvest Festival theme of thanking

God and being grateful for all that we have. It

was a great pleasure to see the church looking so

colourful. After the work was done there was a

more relaxed atmosphere during the afternoon as

we welcomed visitors who called in for viewing

and refreshments.

After our Harvest Festival Service on Sunday we

had a ‗Bring and Share‘ Harvest Lunch in the Parish

Centre, an informal friendly occasion, enjoyed by

all, followed by the sale of produce which proved

very popular.

A big thank you to everyone who helped in any

way to make the weekend a success, for the

flowers and arrangers, for all who brought

produce, and especially to Auckley Allotment

members Pete and Clive, who gave us such an

abundant supply of beautiful fresh vegetables which

helped us to make a lovely display.

Flying Start

Day Nursery

Celebrates their

10th Birthday

It has been a busy time at Flying Start Day Nursery! Recently the nursery was awarded with

5 Star Food Hygiene ‘rating scores on the doors’. Then on the 24th September the Nursery

celebrated it’s 10th Birthday Party. This was a very successful event with over 200 people attending.

The entertainment included a fairground ride and bouncy castle. The refreshments provided included an

ice cream van which was hit, especially with the children and the catering was provided by Sandra Bishop,

Occasions Catering.

On the day the raffle raised nearly £240.00 which will be split between the Special Care Baby Unit at

Doncaster, the special care baby unit will always be close to Martin and Carol‘s heart, as when their

triplet sons were born prematurely, nearly 18 years ago they spent some time in there. The boys were

their inspiration to open Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery ( 14 years ago) and then Flying Start Day

Nursery.

And to ―Vulcan To The Sky‖, Robin Hood Airport. The Vulcan is very special to this site as the Vulcan‘s

were based at RAF Finningley which is now Robin Hood Airport. The Vulcan XH558 is based here now.

Vulcan To The Sky is a registered charity and relies

on donations to keep this magnificent plane flying.

They are trying to raise funds for it to fly at the

Queens Diamond Jubilee next year.

A big thank you to all the businesses, parents and

friends who donated raffle prizes which helped Flying

Start to raise this money.

More recently Flying Start had it‘s Ofsted inspection,

this was a big surprise and the inspector arrived

before 7.45am! However, this proved to be a very

successful Ofsted and we received Good in all areas,

this is a credit to the manager and all the staff at

Flying Start.

Auckley Pre school

celebrates 40 years

Auckley pre school celebrated 40

years of looking after the villages

toddlers with a big garden party.

The weather was amazing and Mr Magic

entertained children and grown ups alike. There

were cakes and refreshments along with a raffle

and games which helped the group raise nearly

£200.00.

I browsed through the nostalgic photo album of

years gone by to the present day. Both my children

went to Auckley pre school along with many of my

friends children and it was lovely to see

photographs of everyone of them!

Auckley Pre-school was founded in 1971 as

Auckley Playgroup when a group of sixteen Mum‘s

got together to raise money to form the group.

Originally they supplied their own toys from home

for the Children, until funds where raised from

various activities, raffles and jumble sale donations.

Auckley Playgroup changed its name to Auckley

Pre-School and follow Ofsted and EYFS guidelines.

They are a registered charity and therefore rely

heavily on Government funding for three and four

year olds. They also fundraise throughout the year

to help with the cost of rent, salaries and

equipment etc.

Auckley pre school have eight members of staff

and are registered for thirty children per session.

Over the years they have had children from all

areas including Auckley, Branton, Cantley,

Rossington, Bessacarr, Bawtry, Finningley,

From left to right front row: Janet Blakey, Anne Stead, Julie Turton, Marina Harper.

Back row: Alison Farmer, Julia Stubbings, Karen Johnson, Anne-Marie Cook, Dawn Fiddler,

Denise Gaffney, Cathy-Anne Frankland.

Armthorpe, Westwoodside, Epworth, Misson, and

Wheatley. Auckley Pre School‘s success has largely

been down to word of mouth.

Over the past 18months they have extended their

hours to suit the needs of working parents. Alison

Farmer, Business Manager says ‗We started doing

lunches and they were very popular, so we

increased it to all day as there was a demand for

the care. We are now open from 9.00 to 3.30

every day. We also have very good links with

Auckley school where we can drop off and/or

collect nursery children who have either a morning

or afternoon session with pre school as well as a

nursery session at Auckley School. We also offer

lunch as part of this package. Auckley School

provides a Breakfast Club and after School Club so

Children can have all day care from 7.45am to

6.00pm.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone

who attended on the day. Also thank you so much

for all who have supported our Pre-School over

the years and especially the staff‘s family and

friends. Here‘s to the next 40.‘

For more information, contact Alison Farmer on

01302 770409

Other fund raising events planned include bags 2 school on Thursday 17th November and the pre school is collecting items for their Christmas Tombola for their stall at Auckley Christmas Market. So if you would like to clear out your

wardrobe in time for Christmas, be sure to drop your old clothes, shoes, bags and bedding off at pre school on 17th November or just before.

Mr Dan has been a familiar face in our

villages over the last five years. Carrying

out workshops in schools, circus skill

shows at local events and a regular

feature at many a child's birthday party,

he has become a popular and familiar

face. The Arrow wanted to get to know a

little bit more about the man behind Mr

Dan, to find out where it all began and

what Mr Dan is planning next...

When did you become an entertainer?

I began entertaining whilst studying theatre.

Inspired by street performers, I began entertaining

at local gala‘s and attractions. When I first began

entertaining in 1996, I was known as Dangerous

Dan because I performed slightly dangerous shows,

with tricks such as glass walking, the beds of nails

and fire eating.

When did you start learning circus skills?

I could juggle as a boy and learnt extra circus skills

like stilt walking in 2000. I had no teacher or

Internet, I used books and practiced. I learnt as

many circus tricks as I could to enhance my

repertoire as an entertainer. In the same year, I

helped to revitalise a children‘s project that had

funding from Children in Need. The project had

other workers who were skilled in circus tricks

that I could learn from and the project is still

running today. It is called the Sheffield Youth

Circus.

What circus skills do you teach in schools?

Mr Dan‘s Circus workshops teach juggling,

unicycling tight wire walking, diabolo, stilts, plate

spinning, flower sticks, clowning around, pedal

wheels and object balancing to children of all ages.

What do you do at parties?

I perform an entertainment show including juggling,

unicycling, diabolo, plate spinning and giant circus

ball. I also provide a disco with lights, party games,

party dances, balloon modelling and the circus

playtime; where children try circus skills such as

tightrope walking, fun wheels, stilts and plate

spinning. This two hour party package is called the

circus party. There is a video clip of my party antic

on www.mrdan.co.uk. We also can provide an

animal act, magicians, face painters, discos,

puppeteers and balloon modellers.

Your Circus skills parties and workshops

show not only your own talent as a

performer but also your ability to teach

young children, where does this come from?

I qualified and then worked as a tutor at Doncaster

College teaching performing arts and drama to

post GCSE students. I enjoyed my time at

Doncaster College and left to become a full time

entertainer and in-school workshop tutor called

Mr Dan.

What’s Mr Dan

juggling now?

What benefits do your circus workshops

bring to children?

When children try circus skills, they are developing

their hand and eye co-ordination and also their

ability to balance. There is a lot of scientific

information about why children should learn circus

skills at this web address http://www.mrdan.co.uk/

teaching/circus-skills. The most important factor

of teaching for me is that the circus workshop are

fun and safe.

Apart from schools and parties, do you carry

out workshops anywhere else?

Our circus workshops go all over the UK. We are

suitable for adult‘s corporate training days, recently

working tutoring circus skills to vets and to the

workers‘ of an oil company to enhance their team

building training. Our workshops are also suitable

for christenings, weddings and for community

groups such as Rainbows, Brownies, Guides,

Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. We also deliver drop in

circus workshops for shopping centres and events

too.

What do you do at events? Have you had a

favourite event that you have worked on?

For events I can perform stilt walking, balloon

modelling, human statues and circus tricks like

unicycling or juggling. My Silly Circus Show or my

new Punch and Judy are also suitable for events. In

2006 I walked stilts at the World Cup in

Germany which was a very memorable experience.

Tell me about your Punch and Judy show,

why did you start this project?

I started swotting up on Punch and Judy because it

is an interesting traditional art form from the 17th

century that is now fading away. After two years

of gathering information, building the booth and

props, script writing and rehearsals, the shiny new

Punch and Judy show was introduced in summer

2011. It has already been successfully received at

parties, schools and gala events.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School

Visit to Westminster Abbey! Before the Summer holiday our Jubilate Club

entered a competition to design a banner to

represent Sheffield Diocese. We were keen to

make an entry as we were told that the banner

would be paraded down the main aisle of

Westminster Abbey with banners from all

Dioceses of England and Wales at a Celebration

Service, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury

on Friday 14th October. The Celebration

Service was planned to mark the 200 years

since the National Society was founded. The

National Society’s fundraising and vision

supported the establishment of Church

Schools, which ensured that for the first time

all children had access to education.

We were delighted to win the competition and

then had to work extremely hard to prepare a

beautiful banner. We were very excited to be

invited for the Service and for one of our

children to carry the banner. As all children in

Jubilate Club would represent our school

brilliantly, we drew names out of the hat and

Anya and Ellie in Year 6 went with our party of

school adults. Ellie carried the banner and the

Service was a wonderful occasion!

BAE Systems Workshops

BAE Systems visited school to inspire our Year

5 and 6 pupils about the importance of

acquiring Maths and Technology skills. They led

a highly interactive presentation and then led

workshops for the two classes.

Year 1 Visit to Eureka!

On Tuesday 4th October, Class 1 went on a

school visit to Eureka as part of our topic all

about ourselves and keeping healthy. We took

part in a workshop called ‘Fruits for Thought.’

In this workshop we did lots of investigating

of different kinds of fruits such as squeezing,

grating, zesting and peeling.

We had chance to taste some of this fruit

juice. The lemon and lime juice was very sour!

We also had chance to visit the different

galleries at Eureka. We went to the town and

visited the bank, post office, garage, shop and

house.

We went to the shop.

We went to the kitchen.

We went to the bank.

We went to the post office

We also did lots of practical activities when we

went to the gallery ‘Our Body.’ We went inside

a giant mouth and we found a wobbly tooth.

We are seeing how far we can stretch.

All of Class 1 had a fantastic time at Eureka!

Year 5 Visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park

On Monday 22nd September, Class 5 went to

the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. First we went to

see the meerkats and the mongooses, then the

other animals in the park. The best part was

when we walked around the lemurs’ cage and

when we went to see the lions and the tigers.

The thing that I liked about the lemurs was

that they were all huddled up like a proper

family, having a cuddle. I also liked how they

climbed. The thing that I liked best about the

lions was that they were playing happily and I

liked learning facts about them.

After walking round the animals, we went in a

reptile classroom just for schools. There were

lots of reptiles like snakes, tarantulas and two

bearded dragons. One of them puffed his

cheeks to show off to his girlfriend! Jessica

the keeper brought them out and put them on

our tables and she also told us interesting

facts. Did you know that when a predator is

trying to attack the bearded dragon, which is a

lizard, its tail will drop off?

I really liked going to the Yorkshire Wildlife

Park and I’m sure everyone liked it just as

much as I did. We had a great time there.

Harvest Festival

Many thanks to everyone who attended our

Harvest Festival; it was lovely to see so many

parents/relatives there. We had a busy sale of

produce afterwards and raised the fantastic

amount of £500 which has been sent to the

charity Christian Aid. This is the largest sum

we have raised for charity after a Harvest

Festival, so thank you for your generosity.

The produce left behind at the end of the

sale was collected by M25, who support

homeless people in Doncaster.

We hope you have enjoyed reading some of

our school news and look forward to sharing

more with you next month!

Best Wishes,

E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

Auckley School News

On Monday 3rd October, Key Stage 2 was

visited by a team from BAE systems and

the RAF. They put on a show all about bio

-mimicry, which is where scientists and

engineers mimic skills from nature and put

them to good use. For example, did you

know that spider’s webs reflect UV light?

Well, birds can see this light and scien-

tists have engineered windows which in-

corporate a spider’s web so that birds can

see the UV light and they won’t smash

into windows!

The show was fantastic, educational and

very funny! Years 4 and 5 got to work

with the team afterwards.

It was an amazing experience and one

which we really enjoyed.

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School

Castleton Visit. On Tuesday 20th September our year 5 Class were up bright and early and heading for Castle-

ton in Derbyshire. The purpose of the trip was to help them with their learning challenge for this term ‗Where would you rather live Castleton or Auckley?‘ On arrival in Castleton the children embarked on the ―Three Rocks Walk‖ where they learnt about the three different rocks around Castleton, looked for fossils in dry stone

walls and found out that Castleton was once a Coral Reef. The children then went deep inside the Castleton hills at Treak Cliff Cavern to hear the story of the Blue John stone. After a well earned lunch we set off back into Castleton to do some map work and a street survey. When asked about the day Kuba said ―It was fun looking at the different fossils such as Crinoids and Trilobites.‖ Erin commented ―Castleton was fantastic and my favourite

thing was going into the Cavern and learning about the Blue John.‖

Eco Day. Our Eco group ‗The Green Dragons‘ have been working hard towards Hayfield Lane achieving the Silver award in the Eco schools programme. The group decided they wanted to make the whole school, pupils and staff Eco aware by hav-

ing a No Electricity Day, so no lights, no computers or smart boards,

no photocopiers and even a salad for lunch as no ovens could be used. Electricity metres were read all week so on the day we would

know how much electricity we had saved. It‘s fair to say that every-one found this a challenging day with not being able to use the mod-ern technology what we have now become so dependent on.

Caythorpe Court. On the morning of Friday 23rd September, 40

children and 5 adults headed off for our yearly, weekend visit to PGL‘s outdoor activity centre near Grantham in Lincolnshire. At Caythorpe Court the children took part in a wide range of activities including, zip

wire, low ropes, trapeze, quad biking, orienteering, abseiling and the

vertical challenge. This is a fantastic weekend that the children look forward to every year where they give each other their support and encouragement to try activities that they might never have done

before. Mr Winter, the group leader said, ―I am always amazed by the bravery of the children as they meet their own challenges on the climbing activities and zip wire. It was another great trip to Caythorpe

Court.‖

Austerfield. Our Year 2 class visited the

Austerfield Study Centre as part of their Learning Challenge for this term – What plants and animals can you find? While at

Austerfield they went on a woodland trail, investigating the habitats of woodland crea-tures. Then they went on a mini beast hunt and found all sorts of creepy crawlies. After

lunch they did pond dipping and caught all sorts of animals like boatmen beetles, stickle-back fish and water snails. Year 2 had a great

day! Gardening Club. Back in the summer our gardening club worked very hard and grew

some delicious fruit and vegetables. They were so impressed with some of the vegetables they decide to enter some carrots and sweet pea

flowers into the Auckley Show and we are proud to say that we came second in both categories. So very well done to them! Also

the gardening club will be showing off their hard work at Countryside Live at the York-shire showground. MacMillan Coffee Morning. On Friday 30th

September Hayfield Lane held its biggest ever coffee morning. The staff, pupils and parents helped raise £300 for this worthy charity in

aid of Cancer support by buying tea and cof-fee, donating and buying some delicious cakes and holding a raffle. A big thank you needs to

go to Mrs Julie Cannon and the school council who put in a huge amount of time and effort to make this event possible. A fantastic morn-

ing was had by everyone involved.

Gainsborough Old Hall On Thursday 6th

October year 4 visited Gainsborough Old Hall

as part of their learning challenge ‗What

would it be like to for me during the Tudor

times?‘ At the start of the day the children got

dressed up in Tudor clothes and acted out a

feast. The children also looked around all the

rooms in the hall and learnt about who would

have lived there and all aspects of Tudor life.

Beau and William from year 4 thought that

Gainsborough Old Hall was very exciting and

interesting, but would they liked to have been

in the Tudor times?

Senses

Have you ever been transported

back in time by a smell, a sound,

or a sight? The other week I got

the unmistakable waft of school

dinners. I‘m not sure where it

came from, but it drifted into the place where I was.

Instantly, I was transported back some 37 years to infant school. I could picture the table where I sat, and

then the classroom I was in, even what was on the wall – a giant caterpillar like creature called Fiddle-

sticks, which, with the aid of a concealed tape recorder spoke to us! Then the experiment we carried out

with dog biscuits (don‘t ask) and the way the teacher turned one corner of the classroom into an airport,

complete with ‗ding dong‘ sound for making announcements.

Amazing, that a smell could re-create such detail.

In late October, the Vulcan Bomber carried out a fly by for crowds at Robin Hood Airport. Living just 400

yards from the end of the runway I could smell the aviation fuel. It soon climbed into the sky and banked

steeply over Finningley, it was an incredible sight. The sound was fantastic and I‘m sure my internal organs

were jumping around. Finally it landed, and the smell of burning rubber wafted over the fence as the

wheels made contact with the tarmac! Admittedly, not the best smell in the world!

For me, the smell, sight, and sound took me back to an air show, at RAF Leeming, some 18 or so years

ago. For my youngest child, it just reminded him of the last time he saw her fly. For others, it perhaps

reminded them of the Falklands conflict, and for some, maybe memories of the Second World War were

brought to mind.

Later this month we will remember those who gave their lives for their country, in conflicts all over the

world, both in the past and in the present. Some of you will have been there, others will have had stories

passed down from parents and grandparents, others may know very little. However, for two minutes on

the 11th at 11.00am I hope everyone remembers. Whilst smells, sights and sounds are powerful reminders.

I think that two minutes of silence, in a world where our senses are often overwhelmed, is an even more

poignant reminder.

Jesus said, ―Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.‖

So wherever you are, whatever you are doing, try to take those two minutes to remember, to think, to

reflect, to be thankful.

Blessings
