ONE TO ONE PILATES WITH

SUZANNE DAVIES MFHT A new class starts at Auckley Parish Hall on

Tuesday 10th January, 2.30-3.30pm.

ONE TO ONE PILATES is designed to improve every day activities, giving you confidence to

enjoy life! This class is a real celebration of using

the body well and being aware of what each part

is for and how it works. We all take our body

for granted and then wonder why it doesn't

work well at times. These classes will give TLC

to the joints and muscles, leaving you feeling

relaxed but energised. Older adults will maintain

mobility and independence at least and will gain

strength and tone in very little time.

Pilates is for all ages and abilities, all conditions

and ailments. Functional exercises are taught so

that Pilates can be done at home every day

doing every day things.

For further details contact Suzanne on 07787158180 the cost of the course is £27.50 for 6 sessions or £6 per class.

social game and some fun rather than extreme

competition, although we do have a weekly

competition. We have a wide range of attendees

of all abilities and ages. Anyone is welcome,

regardless of ability.

The cost is £3 per person and runs every

Provision of Bus Shelter, Main Street, Auckley - Council is pleased to announce that, weather per-

November. A temporary bus stop will be provided further along the road whilst the work is in progress.

Parking Outside School and Ellers Lane Shops - Irresponsible parking continues to be a problem

outside the Auckley School and on the double yellow lines in front of the shops. Enforcement Officers

will be monitoring the situation and tickets will be issued to offenders.

Eagle and Child Public House - Council is to apply to English Heritage for the Eagle and Child to be

made a listed building. We would appreciate any photographs or other memorabilia relating to the build-

ing that members of the public might own which could be copied and used for our application.

Improvements to Hanson Quarry, Hurst Lane - The Hanson management is planning to make im-

provements to the site by moving the machinery further back from the road and providing a wheel wash

in order to reduce the amount of sand being spread on the highway at Hurst Lane.

A SMART

SOLUTION TO

DETER THEFT

SmartWater is a colourless liquid solution that is

simply dabbed onto the uneven surfaces of your

valuables.

It can be used to code all sorts of items such as

jewellery, ornaments, electrical items and even

your motor vehicle. Each bottle contains a unique

chemical ‗code‘ which is registered to you –

conclusively proving ownership. It cannot be easily

seen by the naked eye and is almost impossible to

remove. The liquid glows under ultraviolet light

making it easy for the Police to detect.

The Police use it in undercover operations to catch

and convict criminals. Criminals know about

SmartWater and fear its power to forensically link

them with the scene of a crime.

So, by coding your valuables and displaying the

SmartWater deterrent signs, you are sending out a

powerful warning to any thieves and burglars

operating in your area.

Your local Ward Members have provided funding

for the purchase of SmartWater and this product

is available for free, while stocks allow to

residents of the following villages in the South area:

Old Cantley, Branton, Auckley including the

Hayfield Estates, Blaxton & Finningley

If you wish to take advantage of this free

service (which would normally incur a

charge) please telephone

Mr Steve Racjan from the South Area team

on 01302 865559 to arrange a convenient

time to visit your property.

Local student is set to be

Talented local guitarist Travis Speight

for young musicians. The 13 year old‘s track ‗Rock

of Ages‘ has already been number one in the Offi-

cial UK youth chart and he has had nearly

2000 plays.

Travis, who has been playing guitar for 8 years

with Doncaster Youth Jazz Association, describes

his music as ―Rhythmic, energetic and versatile‖

and is really excited about his prospects, ‗‘Winning

this competition would give me the credibility I

need to take my music to a higher level.‘‘

“It's tough to get started in the music indus-

try and Next BRIT thing is a brilliant compe-

tition that gives all young people in the UK a

chance to make it big. If you love music, get

Auckley Academy School News

A Visit from Florence Nightingale

Children in Year 2 brought history to life this

term by participating in a Florence Nightin-

gale workshop event. The children had oppor-

tunity to role play the conditions and experi-

ences Florence encountered during her time in

the Crimean War using real life Victorian ar-

tefacts and costumes. This involved cleaning

the ward, preparing a stew, praying and writ-

ing letters home on behalf of the wounded

soldiers. The school hall has never looked so

clean! Fun was had by all.

Harvest Festival

Year 1 and 2 have recently performed a lovely

harvest festival to the parents and school.

This year our thoughts were about bread: how

it is made and where it comes from. Year 2

children read lots of facts about bread and

told the audience how they had made their

own bread whilst Year 1 children acted out

the story of The Little Red Hen. All of the

children performed very well. Many thanks

also to the children who donated gifts for our

harvest display. Year 6 delivered packages to

the senior citizens in the area who were very

pleased. Thank you.

Austerfield Visit

Year 6 have recently visited Austerfield as

part of their science topic – Interdepend-

ence and Adaptation. There the children had

first hand experience in a woodland environ-

ment, such that they were able to under-

stand and appreciate the inter-relationship

of all life and were encouraged to care about

the environment. They enjoyed a woodland

nature walk, games about food chains and

then were thrilled to hold and pet a variety

of animals from giant centipedes and snails to an albino hedgehog. Fun was had by all!

Halloween Disco

All the children had a lot of fun at the Hal-

loween Disco run by Friends of Auckley

School. They all came dressed in scary cos-

tumes and enjoyed dancing and playing

games. Lots of money was raised for future

projects. Thanks to all those involved. If

you wish to join Friends of Auckley, meet-

ings are held at 7pm on the second Tuesday

of each month. Next meeting in January.

Help the Heroes Day

Auckley School went all out to support the

members of the UK’s armed forces who have

been injured while serving their country in

conflicts around the world. Every child

dressed up in clothing linked to the forces and donated money to help the charity. To make

the day more fun, year 6 set up a gruelling assault course and put the other year groups

through their paces. We’re happy to report that everyone passed the Commando training and

£194 was raised!

A Visit to Eden Camp

On Friday 14th October Year 3 visited Eden Camp, a World War 2 museum situated on the

site of a former prisoner of war camp. On arrival we saw lots of military vehicles including

tanks and planes.

First we went to see a puppet show about famous wartime entertainers. We joined in with

the singing and some people got squirted with water!

Then we visited the different huts. The Blitz which recreated a bomb attack was a favour-

ite, despite the fact that it was very dark, noisy and scary. The German U-boat was also

popular because it had vari-

ous buttons and levers which

emitted loud noises when

pressed! The hut depicting

everyday life was also inter-

esting.

After dinner we had the

obligatory visit to the shop

where all year 3’s money was

duly spent! Even though it

was a long journey a very

enjoyable day was had by all.

One child even judged it to

be “the best museum in the

world”.

Finningley CE Primary School ‗Get Bright Day 2011‘

On Friday 11th November Finningley CE celebrated its second annual Get Bright Bike It

day with all our pupils helping raise awareness of how important it is to be seen at

night.

School has been a Bike It school for two years now and under the excellent leadership of our own

Bike It staff champion Miss C Waszak we have trebled the number of pupils who ride to school.

Throughout the year Miss Waszak and her Bike It pupil team work with Sustrans‘ Tom Collister to

deliver cycle safety training for all pupils, help younger pupils off stabilisers and increase children‘s

awareness of how to travel safely.

This has had so many benefits for our school with a reduction in the number of cars around school

and much increased fitness levels for children and, of course, a sense of independence for young

people.

This week we have been encouraging cyclists by

giving daily raffle prizes to all who ride to school,

awarding the brightest bike with a new set of

lights and choosing a class Bright Buddy that

shows off the best of high visibility.

Abbigale in our youngest class is a cracking

example of the thought, effort and enthusiasm

that the pupils and parents have put into the

week.

Next up is our Cycle to Santa competition so

look out for that.

Christmas Carol Singing This will take place on Wednesday 14 December 2011 at 6.30 p.m. at Kilham Hall, Kilham Lane

Branton accompanied by the Armthorpe Elmfield Brass Band and attended by children from Branton St

Wilfrid‘s School. Festive refreshments for a small charge will be available and also a raffle.

New Notice Board at Old Cantley A new bespoke notice board is now in place with a small stone planter as it was necessary to remove the

old plant trough to make way for the larger notice board. It is hoped residents of Old Cantley will enjoy

the improved provision of information.

Basket Ball Facilities Arrangements are being made for a basket ball to be installed on the hard standing area adjacent to the

ball wall at the Kilham Lane recreation ground for the enjoyment of young people.

Parking on Pavements Residents are again requested to refrain from parking on pavements in order to keep pedestrians safe by

not obstructing the footpaths.

Dog Control Order – Kilham Lane Recreation Ground As no representations were received regarding the introduction of a Dog Control Order at the above site

the parish council agreed its introduction with effect from 1 November 2011. As a consequence it is an

offence for anyone to allow a dog to enter the site unless any of the exceptions contained within the or-

der apply. A copy of the order can be viewed on the council‘s website or obtained from the Clerk.

DMBC‘s Core Strategy Document The parish council has considered representations relating to a section of the strategy (Policy No. 13) that

relates to the provision of gypsy and traveller sites and has expressed concern that the policy seems to

favour the establishment of sites in areas where other development may be restricted. The council has

also supported DMBC‘s proposal for changes to national planning policy to seek a more equitable distribu-

tion of traveller sites.

Request for Old Photographs of the Parish The parish council‘s website has attracted many favourable comments since its inception and requests

have been received for more old photographs to be added. If anyone has any photographs that would be

of local interest please contact the Clerk.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School During the last few weeks we have planned many additional visits out of school and we have invited

many visitors into school as part of our R.E. Curriculum Focus Week, to enrich and enhance our

creative delivery of R.E. throughout school.

Year 6 Visit to Denaby Main Parish Church Last year Class 6 developed a close link with the

Class 6 pupils at Denaby Main Primary School and they planned and enjoyed many joint activities

and projects together. As part of our R.E. Week activities, our new Class 6 pupils were shown

round Denaby Main Primary School and Parish Church by their pen pals.

Year 5 Residential Visit to Walsingham On Wednesday the 2nd of November Class 5 went to

Walsingham and had a brilliant time. First of all we walked the Holy Mile, following the route that

Henry VIII and countless pilgrims have made in the past and reached Walsingham; it was very

exhausting but we made it!

After we had finished the Holy Mile, we walked to our bedrooms and unpacked. Then we looked at

the Stations of the Cross. The Stations of the Cross are pictures of Jesus and tell the story of

how Jesus was crucified on the cross. There were fourteen different stations and they were all

over Walsingham.

Next we had a workshop and role play session about the history of Walsingham and how it was

founded by Lady Richeldis who had three visions about Mary pointing at the house where Jesus

was born. The house was built and is now called England’s Nazareth. After that we made some

pilgrim’s badges to wear around Walsingham. After having a tiring day we all had tea and made our

way to bed.

The next day we had breakfast and we went to mass in the Holy House, we also drank water from

the holy well. Afterwards we went to look at some Tudor buildings and looked at the ruined abbey.

Then we all dressed up and went to a Tudor banquet. Our banquet included pottage and chicken

legs (we were very good and we did not throw our chicken leg bones on the floor as the Tudors

did!) We really enjoyed it and would love to go again!

Class 5 would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped take us to Walsingham, and to the

PCC for their kind contribution towards our visit. By Georgina and Freya

Doncaster Minster On

Thursday 13th October, Classes 3

and 4 visited Doncaster Minster

as part of their R.E. Week work.

Both classes found it an

enjoyable and informative visit.

The children learned about the

special clothes that a priest

wears and some children tried on

the clothes.

They listened to Reverend Jude

tell them about Communion. They

looked at the font where people

are baptised.

The children took part in a quiz

where they had to visit different

parts of the church and find

pieces of information about the

statues, the stained glass

windows, the chapel, the font,

the lectern or the pulpit. Thank

you to Marion and the other

Minster volunteers who made us

feel very welcome and answered

all of our questions.

Samaritan’s Purse-Shoe Box

Appeal Jean Gravett from the

Samaritan’s Purse Charity visited

school as part of our R.E. Week

to talk about the Shoe Box

Appeal. Children and families

were invited to pack a shoe box with gifts and useful items e.g. toothbrush, soap, sweets, crayons,

colouring book/paper, small toy etc. and to cover the shoe box with Christmas wrapping paper. Our

50 boxes have been collected and will be delivered to children in the Crimea, who will have no

other Christmas present this year.

Doncaster Mosque Visit On Wednesday the 2nd of November 2011 Class 5 went to the mosque.

An Imam showed us around the mosque and we looked at the different features, like the minaret.

Then we went inside the mosque and took our shoes off. After that, we went in the main hall. It

was very big and had a beautiful carpet. We also looked at the Arabic books the boys and girls use

to learn about Islam.

Then the Imam told us about the rules of Islam. The first rule is that there is only one god: Allah.

The second rule is that the Prophet Mohammed is the messenger of Allah. Then we went to the

girls’ classroom and the Imam told us about the third rule of Islam, which is that there is a

Judgement Day, where Allah will judge everyone. After that we went back to school. We really

enjoyed our visit and learnt lots! By Benson, Charlie and Tom P

British Legion Poppy Appeal Every year we

sell poppies and collect contributions for the

British Legion, Year 6 pupils study what life

was like during World War II and we always

observe the two minutes’ silence, as it is so

important for our children to learn about the

sacrifice made by so many in the service of our

country. Many thanks to the Parish Council, who

send us a poppy wreath each year. This is a

focal point for our acts of worship around

Remembrance Day and the wreath is taken to

St Wilfrid’s Church, on behalf of all the

children and staff, for the Remembrance

Sunday Service.

Congratulations to Mrs Dilks Many

congratulations to Mrs Dilks, who leads our

Jubilate worship group with great dedication

and creativity. Mrs Dilks has undertaken many

months of training through the Diocese and at

a wonderful service at Doncaster Minster led

by the Bishop of Sheffield recently, Mrs Dilks

was ordained as a Children’s Minister.

We look forward to sharing more of our school

news next month.

Best Wishes

How To Write A

Christmas Card

In this age of the internet,

emails, and text messaging, the

one thing that hasn‘t changed

too much is the giving and

receiving of Christmas cards.

However, should you get stuck

with what to say, the internet

has some helpful web sites.

Here is a real example...

“Christmas card messages say something about you. What you decide to write in your Christmas card and then

send out to the masses can bring cheer to your friends and family. Business holiday messages show customers that

you appreciate them and keep you in touch through the holidays.

You may have trouble thinking of the just the right thing to say in your Christmas card. You can use this page and

the links included to give you the Christmas message examples and the inspiration you need to write a great

message. Edit them to your taste before sending them out on your own personal Christmas cards. Your message

will be best when you make it personal.

Try listening to Christmas music to put you in the mood to write your Christmas wishes

Some helpful examples:

"Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and happy holidays."

"May we all show each other the love and patience that we may not deserve this Christmas. This

is the true spirit of Christmas."

"It's easy to get caught up in all the business of Christmas, but I'm wishing you a peaceful

Christmas full of the most important things."

"Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May you be surrounded by all the things that bring

Christmas cheer."

"We hope you are surrounded by beauty and comfort this Christmas season."

"Blessings, love, and peace to you this Christmas."

"Hoping you can feel love, joy, and peace this Christmas season."

"Keep Christmas a time of celebration and love. Don't let Christmas become a chore. Don't let

Christmas bring strife to your home."

You may notice that there was nothing ‗religious‘ in all of that, despite Christ being the reason for

Christmas. I wonder therefore what God would write to you in a Christmas card? Here is what I think:

―I Love You‖

I hope you have a Christ filled Christmas and a peaceful new year.

How to avoid a frosty welcome

A very Merry Christmas to all our readers, Weather conditions will be turning frosty, leaving motorists searching for their ice scrapers. Following

is for drivers seeking to avoid a frosty welcome:

Prepare the vehicle for winter early. Have the anti freeze checked, replace damaged wiper blades, stock

up on de-icer, add a frost inhibitor to the screen wash and buy a window scraper and two cloths: one

to clear condensation and dirt from the inside windows and one to clean lights and exterior windows.

Check that the windscreen wipers are off when leaving the vehicle the night before to avoid damaging

the wiper motor and blades when the engine is started the next day. Use external temperature gauges,

if the vehicle has them. An indicated temperature of 3°C means that extremely slippery conditions are

possible. Remember that ice on the windscreen could mean ice on the carriageway at some points,

especially side roads. Observe other road users reactions to conditions ahead as a pre-warning of what

is to come

Stopping distances will increase in frosty or wet weather. Stay focused, look further ahead than usual

and allow for the extra time needed to stop by increasing the gap ahead. Where the road surface is

likely to be slippery, stay in the highest gear possible to minimise the risk of wheel spin. Consider set-

ting off in second gear, releasing the clutch and accelerating very gently.

If the vehicles front end begins to lose grip, a front wheel skid will begin. Reduce acceleration, consider

disengaging the clutch and steer smoothly. If the vehicle goes into a rear wheel skid, lift off the accelera-

tor, consider de-clutching and steer into the skid.

Always ensure windows, lights and mirrors are

clear of dirt and ice before setting off.
