Editors Letter...

Peel investments have been granted

permission via Doncaster Council to

build 750 homes together with roads,

footpaths and play areas on 46 acres

of land off Hurst Lane, near Robin

Hood Airport. This will have a huge

impact on the villages, some positive, some

negative. Blaxton village has around 500

homes, Finningley Village has approximately

650 homes, Auckley Main and Hayfield

together make up another 1350

approximately. A further 750 homes will

provide a community bigger than most

surrounding villages.

There are special conditions attached

which involves large investment from Peel

towards the Finningley and Rossington

Regeneration Route Scheme, as well as a

possible investment in a new primary

school to accommodate children in the

area and other local business projects.

The arrow would be interested in hearing

your views. Please e-mail me at my address

below.

On a lighter note, you will read how we

have our very own Ice skating star in the

making. Molly Lanaghan, from Branton and

a pupil at Hayfield School, has already won

countless trophies and competitions

including the prestigious ‗The UK‘s Most

Promising Skater Award‘. We may very

well have an Olympic star in our midst.

Well done Molly and we wish you all the

very best in your promising career.

Best wishes

Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School

The end of the Autumn term now seems a long time ago, but in spite of the snow we still

managed to complete our full range of Christmas activities. We moved our Christmas Fair

forward a week and, as usual, the children worked incredibly hard during ‘Factory Week’ to

make a huge variety of craft items including homemade crackers, biscuits, candle holders,

wind chimes, fridge magnets, badges and decorations. The children worked out how much the

raw materials cost, and took into account the time each item had taken to make, in order to

set their costs-so we could have some budding apprentices for Lord Sugar in the making! As

well as parents and relatives of the school many

members of our local community joined us and we

raised an amazing £1429 so thank you very much

for your support.

‘Red Riding Hood’

After the Christmas holiday the children had a

treat to look forward to on their return to

school. A touring theatre company visited school

on the first afternoon back to give a wonderful

performance of ‘Red Riding Hood’. This visit was

funded by our wonderful Parent Teacher

Association.

Our Greek Story telling and Puppet Making Day

In Class 3 we have been

learning about the Ancient

Greeks. Some visitors came

into school and told us the

story of Odysseus. We learnt

about gods like Zeus and

Poseidon and goddesses like

Athene and Aphrodite. In

the afternoon we chose a

Greek figure to be and made

a puppet of them. Some chil-

dren chose to make monsters

like the one eyed Cyclops and

the beautiful singing sirens.

Other characters were

Odysseus and his men Aeolus,

Hermes, Helios, Circe, Ca-

lypso and Poseidon. We performed a puppet show for the Infants, telling the story of Odys-

seus and some of his adventures.

We all enjoyed the day and learned lots about the Ancient Greeks.

By Ben and Jemima, Class 3

Class 5’s Day with Henry VIII

On Monday 10th January Class 5 had a visit from Henry VIII! He gave us lots of facts about

Henry VIII and he told us about how he lived like a king.

First, Henry VIII told us about himself and gave Class 5 photos. We learned that Henry

VIII’s father Henry VII defeated Richard III and took the throne so Henry VIII became

king after him. Then we made a paper wing of an eagle and an owl. We cut feathers in it. You

can just hold it up and drop it, then it glides without you having to throw it!

Next, we practised walking like a royal and we wrote with quills and ink. Henry VIII also

taught us a Tudor dance which we per-

formed at the end of the day.

Class 5 really enjoyed their day with

Henry VIII and learned lots of interest-

ing facts!

By Connor and Sam, Class 5

We hope you have enjoyed reading some

of our school news from the last month.

On Thursday 6th January, y7 pupils from

Hayfield School took part in a Curriculum

Day which was all about languages.

The activities ranged from cooking French crêpes

and German Kaiserschmarrn, to creating a comic

strip. Other activities during the day included de-

signing packaging for the food, producing a poster

advertising the food and a shopping list showing

the ingredients and prices. Finally at the end of the

day all the year group took part in a Spelling Bee

where the best two spellers in French and German

in each tutor group went head-to-head to compete

for the title of Spelling Bee champion!

Everyone enjoyed taking part in the activities and

would definitely participate in another languages

Curriculum Day! Our favourite activity of the day

was cooking as we got to eat the crêpes and

Kaiserschmarrn at the end. When the cooking was

finished there was also a race to see who could

clear up the fastest.

The day was a great success; everyone loved it and

had a great time!

Carols Round the Tree

The annual carol singing round the Christmas tree was held on Tuesday, 21st December 2010. In spite of

the Arctic weather conditions, a number of brave souls turned out to sing carols, ably accompanied by the

Armthorpe Elmfield Band. A collection made the sum of £52.34 towards Comforts for Patients at Don-

caster Royal Infirmary‘s Coronary Care Unit. Council wishes to thank the Armthorpe Elmfield Band for

their valiant efforts in freezing conditions, Mr. John Foster who was a splendid Santa, and members of the

public who supported this event.

Dog Fouling

Council is very concerned that a number of individuals are allowing dogs in their charge to foul the River-

side Park and subsequently making no attempt to clean up afterwards. Members of the public who wish

to help are asked to ring Doncaster Council‘s Customer Services Hotline on: 01302 736000 as soon as

possible if they witness anyone who does not clear up after their dogs and report: the name and address

of the person in charge of the dog, a description of the dog, the circumstances, date, time and place of

offence. Alternatively you can email a message to: [email protected]

DMBC‘s Enforcement Officers will also be monitoring the situation and are permitted to issue a fixed

penalty fine of £50. Furthermore, Magistrates can impose a fine of up to £1,000 on offenders for non-

payment of a fixed penalty fine or for being uncooperative when approached.

Removal of Bus Shelter at Main Street

Council is negotiating with the landowner who has been very helpful and supports Council‘s proposal to

replace the bus shelter. Hopefully a satisfactory conclusion will be reached.

Ice Skating

Queen Molly Lanaghan

Talented local, Molly Lanaghan from

Branton started skating just three

years ago and immediately came to

the attention of coaches at Ice

Sheffield.

After just seven months, Molly skated in her

first national competition and won gold

medal in all three events of her solo ice

dance competition, then went on to win her

first national title, ‗Juvenile Ice Dance

Champion‘.

Molly started the next season winning gold

and silver medals at nationals around the UK.

This season closed with Molly winning a medal

in the British solo dance championships,

and again, winning her second national title

of Novice ladies solo dance championships.

In May 2009, Molly was introduced to figure

skating, where she found the jumps and

spins exhilarating and loved the challenge!

Molly won one gold and silver in beginner levels, and

moved straight onto level 2. Molly has taken gold and

silver medals in lots of nationals, Telford, Bracknell,

Milton Keynes, and Teeside. Molly was awarded the

prestigious title of the UK‘s most promising skater award,

another great addition to her achievements. In May this year,

Molly skated her first IJS scoring system, (International Judg-

ing System) and achieved her first ever score of 21.23, and is

now focused on continuously improving her personal best.

Molly was selected to represent Great Britain this year in

Milan Italy, a huge experience for an 11year old, and

achieved her personal best with an amazing 34.25!

Molly finished this years season as a level 6 ladies figure

skater and has again won gold medal in Dundee nationals.

Her coach says ‗Molly has great passion for this sport, she

shows tremendous self discipline and work ethic for her age,

she trains 2-4 hours a day 5 times a week. We look forward

to watching Molly develop in the coming years, and achieve

her dream of going to Olympics for her country.

Road Signs

Dear Readers, The ending of the red flag requirement in 1896 heralded the ear of the motorcar and some motoring

associations took up the business of placing signs. The Motor Car Act of 1903 made local authorities

responsible for placing certain warning and propitiatory signs. For crossroads steep hills and dangerous

bends.

A hollow red triangle indicated a warning sign a solid red disc signified prohibitions. Speed limit signs had a

hollow white ring above the plate giving the speed limit in figures. Other notices were on diamond shaped

boards.

Advanced Drivers know what all road signs mean and update their knowledge from time to time with a

glance from the Highway Code. Road signs are the shape they are because, even if you can‘t see the sign

clearly, say in fog / snow or heavy rain, you‘ll still know when you see a triangular sign that there may be a

significant hazard ahead.

That‘s why the Stop sign is shaped octagonal like the fifty pence coin.

If it‘s covered in snow or traffic dirt you still will be able to tell what the sign is by its shape, a Stop sign.

All warning signs are triangular. Advisory signs are rectangular. Round signs are ―the law‖ you must do

what they say.

Don‘t ignore them, road signs are there for a reason they provide advanced information to help you

avoid danger. You should be extra vigilant about some signs, like those warning signs of schools nearby, as

they may indicate a 20mph speed limit ahead.

A pole with two or more signs on it should be read from the top down the top sign being the first hazard.

Also don‘t ignore farmer‘s signs eg: Mud on the road or PYOS,

yes (pick your own strawberry‘s) you may find extra traffic movement and pedestrians around the

entrance to the field.

The provision of new signs is a continuous process. As the volume and type of traffic on our roads change,

ways of giving essential information to drivers and improving traffic flow and road safety have to be

reviewed.

New signs and road markings are well and truly tested at certain locations to demonstrate their

effectiveness before their

wide-scale use is

recommended. Special signals

and road markings at

pedestrian crossings and signs

and markings to indicate min-

roundabouts and bus lanes

ect: it‘s an ongoing research

program by the Highways

Agency.

St Saviours, Auckley St Oswald’s &

Holy Trinity, Finningley

Happy Easter!

My parents rang me the other day, nothing unusual in that, they ring me each week. However, the opening

topic of conversation was unusual and surprising.

You see, it was the first week of January, and following the plague of locusts that had eaten their way

through their supplies, also known by their Latin name ‗grandchildrenus maximus’ my parents needed to

visit the supermarket to re-stock. To their great surprise they found Easter eggs and hot cross buns on

display! Granted, they live in Cheshire and it can be a little odd, however, as I recall they‘re not yet using

their own calendar...or were they?!

So, my phone call early in January began with, “You’ll never guess what we saw in the supermarket the other

day!” and they were right, after 45 minutes of guessing, I had failed to get the right answer, although I did

discover there were some interesting offers on hair dye and ladies tights!

I was so perturbed I set of to look at another large supermarket near Doncaster town centre. I know, we

vicars lead such interesting lives. Anyway, shock, horror, right next to the security desk they were selling

hot cross buns! It was all too much, it appears that Yorkshire too is experimenting with a new calendar,

and in addition, they‘re having to provide extra security for their pastries!

Joking aside, most of the major supermarkets are indeed currently selling hot cross buns, and some Easter

eggs, albeit the small variety. As the Christmas season ends and we start a new year, they need to employ

new marketing plans. Interestingly, Easter is just about as late as it can be this year as it falls on Sunday 24 th

April, and so it looks like hot cross buns and Easter eggs will be around for the next 3 months! Although, I

suspect already that we will find a generous sprinkling of Valentine‘s Day cards and presents!

Why am I telling you all this? Because, I believe we can, without realising, be taken through the year too

quickly as we move from one area of focus to another – Christmas to Easter to Summer Holidays to

Christmas again. Then, the bits in between lose their own identity, and can pass us by. A friend of mine

works in Pakistan, and since moving there he says he‘s become far more aware of the seasons and times

of the year, because the food is very seasonal. He feels

that time seems to pass slower, and that he appreciates

what‘s around him far more.

God gave us a fantastic world to live in, with so much

beauty in nature and people. Soon, the snow drops will

be popping up, they will be short lived so try not to

miss them.

Blessings
