National Library Week is in AprilThe staff is planning a week of activities, programs and surprises in April. This year’s National Library Week celebration is April 18-25. Included on the calendar of events is a Book Review BINGO night, a program celebrating women with Pippa White and a performance of “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Stupid Tales” by York College Travelling Children’s Theatre. Watch for specific dates and times in the coming weeks.
March MoviesSeward Memorial Library will host
two movies in March. Try to figure out whodunit on Thursday,
March 5 as you watch “Knives Out,” a two-hour murder mystery and Academy Award nominee. Return to the library on Wednesday, March 18 for “Bombshell,” a 2019 biographical drama about sexual harassment at Fox News. Two actresses in this film were Oscar nominees.
Both movies begin at 1:15 p.m.
Mark your calendar! Author William Kent Krueger will be coming Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. Stay tuned for more details!
Friends of Seward Library Spring MeetingThe Friends of Seward Library is an active group of volunteers who support Seward Memorial Library. Twice each year this valuable organization meets to discuss fundraising projects and future library events. During the spring meeting important summer program decisions are made. The group will meet at Seward Memorial Library on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. This non-profit organization was organized in 1987 and is a vital part of our community. Membership incentives include extra discounts on book prices ordered through the Friends. Everyone is welcome to join. For more information or questions, contact Friends president Jeanie Hecker at 402-643-6464 or [email protected].
No More Fines in MarchThe Library Board recently approved a change in policy that could affect your wallet! Beginning on March 1 daily overdue fines on most items will no longer be assessed by Seward Memorial Library. Interlibrary loan items and other materials in special collections such as cake pans, games, and equipment will still have fines. Items will automatically renew twice if allowed. Any item still checked out 7 days past its final due date will be billed to that patron at the full cost of the item and a collection fee added. To read about these changes and the entire process before the City Attorney is involved, check the policy section on the library website after March 1. The staff hopes that by removing the daily penalties on the books left at home or forgotten, everyone will be encouraged to check out more often and enjoy the library with less stress.

Homicides in SewardOur community is grateful for the low crime rate which our families enjoy. But as Dr. Jerry Pfabe discovered after examining crime and court records, there have been noteworthy events in Seward’s history. At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, Dr. Pfabe will share his findings at Seward Memorial Library during his one-hour presentation, “Homicide in Seward County, 1920 to 1947.” Learn some of the criminal history of our community. There will be a time for questions and refreshments will be served.
Scrabble TournamentSpelling skills may pay off at the library on Saturday, February 29. Seward Memorial Library will host a Scrabble Tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m. Players will enjoy 30-minute rounds. Each participant will tally their top 3 game scores and at 2:30 p.m. the highest score will be given $25 cash. Cash prizes will also be given to second and third places. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. The online registration began on February 10. What an enjoyable way to spend the Leap Year!
Pre-Three Story TimeEach Thursday morning caregivers of children
under 3 years of age are invited to share an informal time together at the library. Gather in the lower level conference room at 10:30 a.m. and spend 30 minutes interacting with your child and others. Short stories and activities
are included during each session. No registration is necessary. The group will meet until April 30.

The library needs your help to keep our books in order and shelves dust free!
Adopt-A-Shelf is a volunteer opportunity that invites community members, individually or as a group, to participate in the upkeep required to maintain library collections. By “adopting” library shelves, volunteers may help in various ways, as much or as little as they want, by:
• dusting the books and shelves• straightening books and keeping the shelves tidy and in order• assessing condition of items• suggesting books to be added or culled from the library collection• donating items from your area, with staff approval • promoting your area, and the library, to others in the community
See a library staff member to fill out a volunteer application!
