Itmightb eusefulattheoutsettocommentbrieflyontheenemyandfriendlysituation r .theI IFieldForceareaduringthatperiod.b .atureofthewar . A saresultofFuMAFsuccesses,themainforceenemyunitshavemovedintooutlyingareas.tappearsthattheenemy'smajorobjectivesweretoreopenLOC'sandtodisrupttheFWMAFpacificationeffort.istacticswerecharacterizedbystandoffattacksusingmortarsandrockets,sapperreconnaissanceandselectedattacks,andmainforceattacksinstrengthalongtheborder.heenemy'sabilityt oavoidcontactwheneverpossible

DurinpthepaBtBixmonths,the5thVCDivisionhaBmovedfromitsbaseareaBinLongKhanhProvincetothenorthernportionofPhuocLongProvince.he7th
and9thNVADivisionsremaininthenortherntier.ntelligenceindicatesthatthe13tNVADivision,withtworegiments,hasmovedIntoIVCTZ. Sub-regionalforceshavebeenseriouslyattritedandwhiletheyremaininthesamegeneralareashavebeenforcedtodisperseintosquadandplatoonsizegroupsinordertoobtainfoodandtoavoiddetection. TheassumptionoffullresponsibilityforCapitalMilitaryDistrictbyCG,CML,andtheBubequentphasedownofCMAC,permittedtheutilizationofthe199thLIBandthe3dBde82dAbnDivinotherareas.he3dBde82dAbnDivwasInitiallyemployedinsouthernBinhDuongProvinceandlaterreturnedtotheUnitedStates. IIFieldForceArtillerywastheIOBSof809personnelapaceare-quiringinactlvationofonebattalionof 105mm howitzers,oneartillerygroupheadquarters,andtwoartilleryradardetachments.Additionally,theorganictargetacquisitionbatterywasdrawndowntoastrengthof 30personnel,loBtitstwoMetrosections,andispendingattachmenttotheForceArtilleryHeadquartersandHead-quartersBattery.OBSofonegroupheadquartersnecessitateda realignmentofForceArtilleryassetstoprecludeoverextendingthespanofcontrolofasinglegroup.nderthisrealignmentthethreeheavybattalionswereassignedtoForceArtilleryandthetwolightandfourmedian battalionswereassignedto23dArtilleryGroup.hefor^eartillerystaffwasaugmentedtomeettheaddedadministrativevorkload,principally,thatresultingfromassumptionofresponsibilityforpersonneladministration.heassumptionofcommandandcontroloverthreeheavybattalionsresultedInaddeddemandsontheoperationsf l e c t i o nandrequiredsomeinternalreorganisation.hechartsatTABAdepictIIFieldForceArtilleryorganizationbeforeand aftertheinitialforcereduction.

Duringthepastsixmonths,throughcorrelationofintelligencedata,highlysuspectareasofenemy activitywerelocatedandaGSRmovedtothenearestalliedinstallationorfirebasetofurtheren-hancedetectionofenemymovementsforsubsequentengagementbyartillery,,TACAir,ormaneuverforces.wotypeBofGSR,AN/PPS-5andtheAN/ITS-^,havebeenusedinIIICTZ. Theoffensiveem-ploymenttechniquedescribedabcvohasbeenextremelyeffectiveincounteringenemymovementsbuthasidentifiedseveralproblemareas. Therelativelydelicatenatureoftheequipmentrequireswelltrained personnelnotonlyintheoperationandmaintenanceofthesetbutalsoinproperdisplacementtechniques.ncreasedcrewproficiencyintheseareashasgreatlyreduceddowntime.oin-creaseeffectivenessofthesetinareasthataremaskedfromgroundlevel,AB-216/UsignaltowershavebeenusedtoelevatetheGSR andhaveprovedt ob ewellsuitedforthisparticularrole.
