Mission

the PoSition

FASNY develops globally literate, multicultural lifelong learners through a unique program that integrates French, American and International curricula.

We educate students to understand, contribute to and thrive in an interdependent world. FASNY holds its students to the highest standards of academic excellence, supports them in their per-sonal development and fosters a spirit of inquiry, service, and social responsibility to the environ-ment and the global community.

In a thriving bilingual and bicultural community, students in grades N-12 learn through a dual-language curriculum at the French-American School of New York. Through study in both French and English, FASNY students learn that analytical approaches and problem-solving methods are highly influenced by culture and can vary significantly. They learn to formulate concepts, raise questions, play, write, sing, act, and socialize in English and French, and they pursue a rigorous and challenging academic program that adheres both to traditional American and official French curricula. The school’s dual curriculum highlights the best of both educational systems, drawing talented faculty to impart a truly bilingual, bicultural education to students.

Situated on three separate campuses in Westchester County, FASNY is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools, the New York State Education Department, and the French Ministry of National Education, and the International Baccalaureate Organization.

At this time, FASNY seeks a talented and capable Director of Technology to chair the Technology Department and serve as a member of the administrative team. Acting as a leader, mentor, and role-model, the Director of Technology will provide leadership and develop technology strategies aligned with the educational and curricular goals of FASNY. The Director of Technology manages the use of technology throughout the school, including network administration, database management, system documentation, hardware and software management, overseeing the school’s intranet website, and ensuring that technology is integrated within the instructional program.

School hiStorY Since its founding in 1980, FASNY has grown from a three-teacher, 17-student nursery classroom to a thriving multicultural school on three separate campuses, which educates more than 800 students per year. The school stays true to the vision that

inspired its inception, offering a joint French and American education to a population of local American families, French expatriates, French-American families, and international families of more than 50 nationalities. The rich culture and traditions of the families that compose the school’s community create a unique culture and personality at FASNY, which is a spirited, diverse place to teach and learn.

the SchoolFASNY’s three divisions—Preschool, Lower School, and Upper School—stretch across three campuses in the suburbs of New York City. From their youngest years at FASNY, students gain instruction in both English and French, gaining from an early age the myriad advantages of bilingualism. Studies show that bilingualism begun during nursery years enhances general cognitive development, and that using two languages regularly stimulates students, enhancing their potential for abstraction, symbolism, conceptualization, and problem solving.

The FASNY Preschool is the first place where many students are exposed to a second language and culture, and it is the first milestone in their journeys toward becoming fully functional in French and English, both academically and socially. The Preschool environment is creative, supportive, and nurturing. Students have frequent opportunities for play and outdoor recreation on their own campus, and teachers help them develop critical and creative thinking and language skills as well as social skills in a nurturing community. Much of the Preschool curriculum is taught in French in order to establish the strong language base needed for the reading process, and students spend incrementally more time learning in English as they progress through the division.

The Lower School comprises grades one through five, and it is a very special place in which students from all over the world come together to learn and grow. Students benefit from FASNY’s dual-language program, which employs two excellent educational methods and philosophies, as well as from its values of tolerance, understanding, and respect for differences. Children are encouraged to discover their own strengths and talents through a combined French and American curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking at all levels. Students are fully immersed in both languages, with courses taught in either French or English, according to the subject matter. As they study, students learn that English and French curricula, like the subjects they cover, overlap. They come to understand that knowledge is a whole, and their unique educational journey allows them to become more open-minded and adventurous.

Technology is interwoven into the Lower School curriculum, and each class has scheduled computer periods in both French and English. Additional computer periods in English are added in grades four and five, during which students develop skills in keyboarding, using spreadsheets, and conducting Internet-based research.

The bilingual, bicultural foundation established in the Lower School continues in the Secondary School, which comprises grades six through twelve. FASNY’s Secondary School curriculum successfully prepares students for higher education in the US, UK, Canada, and France. In ninth grade, students prepare for and take the French Brevet exam. In 10th grade, they explore electives in French and/or English. In grades 11 and 12, students take either the IB Diploma Track or the Science or Economics and Society track of the French Baccalaureate. The rigorous academic program yields perennially successful, college-bound students; each year, FASNY graduates enroll at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities worldwide.

School life is rich and varied at FASNY, with abundant opportunities to get involved in student government, community service, extracurricular clubs, and athletics. Both the Lower and Upper Schools have a student-elected government, through which class representative bring student concerns to the council. Students have various opportunities to give back to their communities, through involvement in FASNY’s community service club and various other groups, which coordinate service activities. Recurring service programs include a Thanksgiving soup kitchen, midnight run, and participation in Habitat for Humanity. In secondary school, students have the opportunity to compete on sports teams, including cross country, soccer, basketball, volleyball, rugby, tennis, track and field, and baseball. Extracurricular clubs such as Model UN, the school musical, and the student newspaper add variety and interest, making FASNY a truly well-rounded, dynamic community of learners.
