Create a headline that lets potential employers know how you could help them. This is your opportunity to create an immediate value proposition.
Picture
Profile pictures help to increase engagement by 40%. Choose an image that is professional, but approachable at the same time. Be sure to choose a photo that is current and high resolution. This is your first opportunity to put your best foot forward.
Contact Information
List your phone number, email address, Twitter handle and any websites or online portfolios that are available to make yourself approachable for potential opportunities.
LinkedIn URL
Create a customized URL to simplify your name for search purposes. This also makes for simple linking and printing on collateral like business cards. If you have a very common name, try inserting your middle name or initial.
Connections
It’s important to build a high network of quality connections that you have interacted with either personally or online. For a personal approach, send customized invitations. While it’s okay to send requests to people you have not met, remember to include your reasoning and the potential value you bring as a connection.
Summary
Try to build a three paragraph summary, keeping each paragraph to three sentences or less.
In the first paragraph of your summary, repeat the personal value proposition from your headline.
In the second paragraph of your summary, give a detailed explanation of the work you have done. Include any specific projects or accomplishments that will showcase your key points of strength.
In the third paragraph of your summary, include a direct call to action that encourages interested parties to get in contact with you.
Content
Should you have them, including two to four visual, eye-catching pieces of content within your LinkedIn profile will increase engagement.
