GMIS is a Community of Learners, its committed faculty and staff inspire students to pursue excellence through rigorous academic programs, enriching extracurricular activities and community service. Students experience a broad diversity of thought, people and opportunities to propel them through a lifetime of personal, intellectual and spiritual growth.PARENTS ARE VERY AWARE OF THEIR ROLE IN HELPING THEIR CHILD(REN) TO BE SUCCESSFUL ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLYAs our rst term draws to a close, parents I want to thank you for working closely with teachers, Coordinators,Supervisors, Vice Principal and myself. Calling, sending an e-mail/ sms or a note are effective ways of communicating with your child’s teachers. Sometimes asking for a few minutes to talk about your son/daughter’s progress; be it academic or behavior, can avoid bigger issues by resolving smaller ones- a stitch in time saves nine. It is always a good idea to call ahead of time if you feel you need to meet with a teacher or myself.I appreciate and commend parents in their communication with me over the years. It is our TEAM APPROACH to help each and every student in our care to improve and be successful on a daily basis.Regular attendance and punctuality are important to ensure quality education for the student. It is also an excellent life skill that should be developed at a young age. Some questions to ponder when considering how connected your child is to the family and the broader world include:Am I helping my child recognize himself/herself as a caring person?

Do I allow him/her to clarify his own values?Do I demonstrate the importance of community?

Do I help him/her develop a sense of spirituality?

Am I careful to avoid racist, ethnic, or hateful statements?

Does my child know that I really, really love him/her?

The word “education” comes from the Latin ‘ducere,’ which means “to lead.”We have a long tradition, since 1950, of educating young boys and girls grow intellectually competent, morally strong, loving and committed to do the right.During this term we celebrated a number of accomplishments at GMIS. On 6th July we received our IB DIPLOMA results with several students getting 40 to 44 points and an average of 33.On 9th August 2011, we received our IGCSE results (we published the toppers in the last issue of

On the 23rd of September, 53 students embarked on a journey which would change our lives. When we reached our destination, what we saw surprised us. There were open huts everywhere and the place was completely green. We were all gathered in a big field and the resort guides made us do some ice breaking activities before we moved on to the problem solving. We were divided into groups and were given different games to finish. For each game that we finished, we were given money coupons so we could buy food. After we had freshened up, we left for the river and were allowed to swim in it. At night, the weather was cool and we had no need for A.Cs. On the second day, we were left in a rubber forest and we had to find our way to the finish line by using a compass. Everyone had a great time and we were extremely tired yet again, all the group got money coupons according to their positions. At night, we had to buy raw food from our coupons and cook it. This was the only food we would get for that night. All the groups made delicious and mouthwatering food. On the final day, we went river rafting. This was an amazing experience and I highly doubt anyone present there would ever forget it. We left for Jakarta at 12. Everyone was reluctant to leave as we had an extraordinary experience there.

They say altruism has ceased to exist today. In

this day and age where every good deed is listed, and people are

keeping scores, the CAS students from the class of 2012 proved it otherwise. In the

recent blood donation drive hosted by the senior CAS committee, on the 3rd of November, goodwill was in the air

and everyone fell for it.Organising the event was not an easy feat; we had to ensure that our

event would not coincide with or obstruct any school events and also ensure that the Palang Merah Indonesia’s schedule would be free as well. Although the

date and time had finally been confirmed, there was still a lot of work to be done. We had to collect the names and details of the students, teachers and members of the school faculty who wanted to donate blood, we had to design and make posters to create

awareness about the blood donation drive, and raise money to buy fruits and snacks for the blood donors.

The Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI) very generously providing instant noodles and milk for the donors. We decided that we would add a banana and a jelly packet to the food packets. After calculating and budgeting our costs we decided to ask our fellow CAS students for help, and they held CAS stalls and helped us buy the extra edibles.Of the 121 people that signed up in total, only 75 donations could be made. This was because according to the PMI, blood would be damaged if kept outside the storage temperature for more than three hours, and so although there were still many in line willing to donate they were unable to do so.

The blood donation drive was an event that was received very warmly by the entire GMIS family. Lots of students volunteered to donate and those underage, wanted to help

with organising the event. After all the hard work of the committee and the 10 CAS students that helped us on the day of the donation drive, the event was a

complete success and we all felt contented and satisfied. On behalf of the CAS students and the Gandhi Memorial International School, we

would like to thank the PMI for paving a way for us to donate blood & save lives.

PYP Page On Stage Dance talentime was held on 15th September 2011 in the GMIS auditorium. lt is one of the most popular activities of school as it not only boost’s one’s self esteem but also helps to gain confidence and build coordination skills in the students. The student MC’s Jhanvi 3C, Aditya3E, SeonChi 3A and Colin 2B conducted the programmes very well. The show began and concluded with a scintillating fusion dance performance by the teachers Ms. Sarita, Ms Nirupama, Ms. Sophie, Ms. Panca and Ms. Novita who came up as role models and set an example for the participants. The students from grades 1 to 5 reflected enthusiasm and danced brilliantly on their selected songs. The students, parents and teachers worked collaboratively in designing wonderful costumes and choreographed innovative steps which was reflected in all the dances.

The participants exhibited good understanding of the criteria which were Rhythm and Movement, Beat, Choreography, Costume, Usage of space, Stage projection and overall performance. Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to our

beloved principal Mr. A.P. Singh who always motivates and encourages students, our Supervisor Ms. Precy for her support and guidance.

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and

makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”

The author of this gem of wisdom was celebrating the fact that music is a source of inspiration and expression. Music is loved all over the world. Music speaks for itself and soothes all those who give ear to it. It has the ability to influence people’s attitudes and beliefs and the power to make one heard. The 16th of September, 2011 was enlivened by the annual Instrumental Talentime Competition hosted by Jessica and Virenda. The audience witnessed a fabulous spectrum of talent and musical intelligence brought forth by the students of the Middle School. Rightly did Hans Christian Andersen say “Where words fail, music speaks.”The show began with a very interesting power point presentation which gave an insight into music and the fact that musical talent is not dictated by age and transcends borders. The stellar performance of Dizzy, the alien and the humans that was staged, kept the audience glued to their seats. The participants reflected a clear understanding of the entire gamut of criteria mentioned in the rubrics. The Page on Stage was taken from history and it was amazing to see how the participants were inspired to play an out pouring of music from the pages of history .The talented musicians played beautiful compositions of music supported by a wide range of musical instruments including the piano, guitar, violin, keyboard, flutes and the veena. In keeping with the IB learner profile, the highlight of the show was the rich repertoire presented by the teachers of the Middle School who regaled the audience with their musical talent. Truly a great way to inspire and motivate our dear students. Gayathri took our breath away when she created magic on stage when music and her words seamlessly merged to become one.Our beloved Principal, Mr. AP Singh lauded the efforts of all the participants as well as congratulated the audience on being so appreciative. One thing was clear, he was at the forefront of this celebration and gave ample indication that he too was musically inclined! His sagacious feedback and highly insightful comments were music to everyone’s ears. The event was well co-coordinated and orchestrated due to the backstage efforts of our teachers of the music department, Mr. Irwan, Mr. Adi, Mr. Ion and Mr. Handuko, with the guidance and support of our supervisor, Mr. Eric Guest. It was a rich extravaganza that was enjoyed and appreciated by all who were present. I conclude with the words of Walter Savage Landor “Music is God’s gift to man, the only art of Heaven given to earth, the only art of earth we take to Heaven.”

Teacher’s Day is one of the most important events in the year. We, the class of 2012 students were given the opportunity to organize the morning assembly on 5th October. As our school is an international school with teachers coming from different parts of the world, we decided to come up with different kinds of dances ranging from Indian to ballroom dance. Songs by our juniors added up to the celebration, making it livelier. In the end, a video clip on our teachers was presented by the Class of 2012. The assembly was a success! All our hard work paid off.

Today, whatever we are, not only because of our parents, but teachers as well. They play a very important role in our lives, teaching us the beauty of every small thing in life. As it is our last school year, on behalf of the class of

2012 students, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers who have made each minute of our lives in school very memorable. Once again, thank you.

Mr. Manish Kumar Semwal

The IBAP workshop was held on the 4th and 5th of November, 2011. It was attended by 25 PYP teachers. It was a delightful learning session and in a time span of two days, we strengthened our grip on the principles of a concept driven curriculum, a curriculum that develops students for a lifetime full of exploration. The workshop leader, Mr. David Kainey from Singapore, made the workshop very interesting through various practical learning examples. We also divided and discussed the depths of the book ‘Making The PYP Happen’, and paid close

attention to the criteria for evaluation of summative and formative tasks. The skills for planning a central idea, key concepts and related concepts

for units were also discussed in detail. A video clipping by John Williams, Kathy Short and Lynn Erickson, and the Frayer-model chart were great too. The activities involving pictures of facts and concepts were very refreshing. Overall, we learnt that to provoke students to ask questions is the most important part of teaching. The teaching cycle should be: question → answer → question, rather than just question → answer.

Truth alone will endure; all the rest will be swept away before the tide of

‘A’ has totally dominated all its opponents with impressive wins over them. In one particular match, against Singapore International School the team scored 102 runs in 5 overs and then bundled out their opponents for a paltry 36 runs. The team has won all the eight matches played by it, including the matches against the two British International School teams. The GMIS teams have set a few milestones in the matches played so far. GMIS ‘A’ holds the record for the

highest team score in a single match 101 runs, the highest individual score by a batsman in a match – 40 not out by Shrinivas Shirgaonkar, biggest margin of victory – 66 runs against Singapore International School and best catch also by Shrinivas. Diminutive, Krishnum of GMIS ‘B’ not only possesses the best bowling analysis of 4 wickets for 1 run, but also the distinction of the only hat trick. The players of the senior team have impressed all with their attitude, aptitude and sportsmanship. They have displayed great discipline and in a very professional manner. They appear to be fine tuned in all three spheres of the game – batting, bowling and fielding. The other team, GMIS ‘B’ which is the junior team has won five of the eight matches played till date, losing to British International and Singapore International and GMIS ‘A’ in matches that could

an easy win for the GMIS CC. GMIS CC’s final match on Day 1 of the tournament was against a mighty Hits and Misses who set up a massive target of 65 runs in 5 overs. The GMIS CC keeping their heads tough and being positive, chased down the mighty target to accomplish a memorable victory over the Hits and Misses, merited by commendable performances by Mohit Singh(33 retired) and Neetesh Pansare(30 retired). The second day of the tournament was an important day for all the teams because it was the knock out stage. This time the Hits and Misses Team staged up a formidable 56 in the 5 overs, which ended in an exciting last ball win by GMIS CC. The stand out performers were again the consistent GMIS CC batsmen Mohit Singh(30) and Neetesh Pansare(24).This glorious victory qualified GMIS CC to enter the finals of the sixes cup for the very first time where they were to take on the famed Ceylon CC team.

The GMIS CC displayed magnificent fielding with brilliant catches by Zaim Ahmad Khan and Shubam Patni and were well on their way for a first ever international sixes. ‘Relating theoretical knowledge with practical implementation’, keeping this thought in mind all grade 3 students along with their teachers went on an educational field trip to “Taman Buah Mekarsari” on 27 September 2011. The students gathered in wing C at 6:45 am with full enthusiasm and proceeded towards their buses.

Students were welcomed at Mekarsari by two guides and were led to the nursery for the plantation activity. They were thrilled to do an activity which involved making a butterfly using colourful plant seeds. After an exhaustive but fruitful walk in the park; students and teachers relished their food and went for some rides like bumper cars etc in the amusement park there. Students boarded their buses with sweet memories and a plant which they had planted as a souvenir. The field trip was a success as we all reached back to school happy and safe. Ranjana Manuel.

On the 4th of October, the GMIS auditorium witnessed the annual dance talentime, page on stage of the senior school. This year’s dance talentime provided an extra challenge to the participants in that they had to connect their dance performance to an IB learner profile.

The “extra challenge” was certainly not a burden, as the par-ticipants displayed a wide array of performances ranging from ballet to hip hop, to a mix of traditional and modem. Some very touching and soul stirring performances elevated the standard of the performances, and an informed and supportive audience

showed their appreciation with a standing ovation. Teachers, in the true spirit of Gandhi showcased their latent talents through lively performances and lived the change that they wanted to see in others.

I am proud to have been chosen to be the MC of such a great event. Brian, and I had gone through the motions of preparing the script in the traditional format with a smattering of jokes to suit the occasion but lost all the rigid dialogues and riddles when we got on stage. It was nerve-racking to start the show ;however we slipped into our roles as MCs, learnt to be spontaneous, gave our honest opinions as well as developed stage confidence. Brian even participated in a few dances himself. There wasn’t a single dull moment. Each performance was lively, each participant, special.

The dance talentime ended in a group dance by all participants, dancing to the tune of “Waka W aka”. The participants, audience and myself had to agree that it was a great show, and we are looking forward for more great shows to come.

The Middle School was in full swing with class teachers and students selecting songs and in many cases agreeing to

disagree. Music teachers were put to the test and had their hands full with training and preparing 22 classes for their presentations.Panic set in as the days drew nearer to the final day but as always the performance on the final day was of the highest standard. Class teachers accompanied their classes on and off the stage and some even joined them on stage. There was humour in many a presentation and it was evident the music department was actively involved. It was nice to see students and teachers play live music for their respective classes and the students were very well dressed for the occasion. It was also noted that the conductors played a major role with some outstanding performances. The Principal graced the occasion with his usual appreciation for music and love for student participation. He enjoyed the humour displayed by all classes. He spoke about the days proceedings with a ray of happiness about his person. He stood proudly on stage and acknowledged all the effort put in by every department in the middle school.

A timeless story...heart-rendering music..extravagant sets and a cast of brilliant student actors...all of them contributed to the magical concoction of a superb play “Betrayal...a tale of love and deceit.”Grade 5 students regaled the GMIS audience once again with their semi-musical annual play presentation “The Betrayal...a tale of love and deceit”, on 27th October 2011 in the school auditorium. Inspired by the Disney animation “Samson and Delilah”, the play retraces the trials and tribulations of a star struck hero, Samson who is betrayed by his lady love Delilah.Young performers of Grade 5 perfectly executed their part on the stage, displaying their versatile drama skills. Complementing the actors were the stunning sets that transported everyone back in time. The icing on the cake was the melodious choir whose rendition of the song “My, My Delilah” left no heart untouched, creating a wave of sympathy for the fallen hero. The Principal Mr. A.P. Singh heartily applauded all the students, teachers and the entire team for putting up a magnificent play.

With the pressure of IB building up on our minds, a three-day trip to Bandung could, perhaps, be the best way to give vent to our frustration and stress. And so it was!

The troop, consisting of 4 buses and about 120 students, started early in the morning on the 7th of October. Our first stop was Trans Studio: one of the newest theme parks in town. The amusement arcade boasts the most nerve-racking rides, including a super fast roller coaster,

go-kart circuits, water slides, a haunted house and various others. We loved the rides so much that even when some of us felt mortally dizzy we couldn’t stop ourselves from trying them over and over

again. We hopped onto the bus and made our way to Paris Van Java mall for dinner. The excitement to see our villas peaked at this point; and in no time we were at the “Peak” villas.

The villas were large, well-furnished and luxurious, and were loaded with great facilities. The Jacuzzi and two swimming pools were delightful. We spent the night settling down, playing cards and board

games, and exploring the premises. The next morning, we got ready to go to De’ Ranch after breakfast. We had a lot of fun driving tricy-

cles and bicycles, competing against each other in archery, jumping around in water balls and riding horses. We had dinner at Kampung Daun. The ambience of the restaurant stole our breaths away. We had a sumptuous dinner in a typical Indonesian seating arrangement in natural surroundings. In the evening, we had a candy hunt competition in which groups had to find three hidden candies in the living rooms of their villas. This was followed by a round of games and a talent contest. The

winners of these activities won cash.On the final day, we split into two groups. The first group went for an outbound adventure trip to the Bandung Treetops. As soon as we got there, we put on our treetop kit started completing circuits, comprising of long “Flying Fox” rides, rope climbing and other acrobatic activities. The second group went to watch the Anklung bamboo orchestra. It was amazing to see how the talented musicians played all genres of music – pop, rock, ‘dangdut’, jazz etc.

– using bamboos transformed into instruments. The field trip came to a closure on the 9th of October in the evening.

Through this trip, our opinions about one another changed for the better. Moreover, we forgot our differences, learnt to live together and work as a team. We will always cherish this trip

not just for what each of us did but for what each of us did together.

and teachers put up their annual play presentation, “The Royal Keris”

on 8th November 2011 in the GMIS auditorium with enthusiasm.

The students enjoyed the play as it was related to their Unit of Inquiry

host country. The play revolved around Indonesian culture and the

customs of its people.

The costumes in the play were attractive and out of the world. It was

an interesting fusion of vibrant colours and amazing designs. The

students looked incredibly elegant and traditional in their costumes.

The sets were absolutely mind blowing and transformed the stage into

an exotic Indonesian palace scenery. The acting and the delivery of

dialogues by the 125 students was outstanding and eloquent. The

students also danced and sang on two melodious songs, “ Marilah

Lot of people make animals suffer and many don’t know that animals are not stuffed toys. Very few people in this world realize that animals also have feelings –just like we humans have !

Many animals die because people are cruel to them ! Some people throw animals into gutters, sewers and streets and some give wrong food –even poison to animals because of which eventually the poor animals die Many animals are kept in cages all the time – which is so torturous for the poor animals and also in case of natural disasters they can’t escape from cages and are left to die ! People who do such things to animals are unkind peopel !

Th e A n n u a l S e n i o r S c h o o l p a g e o n s t a g e Musical Talentime was an absolute success! Music teaches us many things and as Leopald

Stokowski rightly said “ A painter paints pictures on a canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.”Music surely teaches everyone to be reflective and open minded. This links to the IB learner profile as those who play music are able to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses to try and improve to do a better performance the next time. Also, it teaches them how to be open minded as they learn to accept different cultures. The rubrics for the talentime were based on relevance to the theme, confidence and stage presence, performance, accuracy and the difficulty level of the piece. The talentime opened with a short skit by the mc’s who presented the opening performance by the music maestros of our school! It was then time for the real participants who proved to be very talented as well. The audience were very fortunate to be able to watch and enjoy such fantastic performers play their chosen piece. It was the day the senior school was looking forward to. Like all other days at GMIS, this day was also about working together

and displaying talents. But this day took teamwork to a whole new dimension. It was the Annual Senior School Page-to-stage Choir Presentation!

It was a breath-taking experience to watch students and teachers work in unison and come up with the most mind boggling ideas. We got to see everything: from solemn songs sung with candles in the choristers’ hands, to the latest hits sung with zeal. Students used all sorts of props available: party-poppers, gorilla masks, umbrellas, tambourines, sign boards and many more. In a couple of performances, the teachers (being the prime role models of stud, ents) came up and conducted the choir; a sign of enthusiasm and energy from the teachers. Students sang songs from all around the world and from varied time periods. There were numbers originally sung and composed by Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. There were songs picked up from TV soaps and musicals like Hairspray and Glee. Students sang the age-old classics “Thousand Miles” and “Dancing Queen” as well.

In addition to this collection, classes ventured on to sing Indonesian songs from famous bands like Nidji and Bollywood hits such as “Chammak Challo”.

This year we faced a new challenge in conducting the most energetic activity in the Middle School,” The Dance Talentime was made more challenging by incorporating the new concept, ‘page on stage’ and also by making it an inter house competition. We emerged successful on 27th September 2011, when we staged the program in the GMIS auditorium with a huge gathering of students, parents and teachers.

“Dance is a timeless universal language of mankind”. (Anonymous).

We put this to reality by incorporating the IB profiles and our MYP areas of interaction into the performances by the students. The participants danced with grace and elegance to the various dance music from Korea, China and Indian. Classical, hip- hop and contemporary dances were the highlight of the show.

This event was successfully organized by the Coordinators Ms. Saraswathi and Ms Shiny with the support of the house coordinators and teachers. The student Emcees Rachael, Rakshita , Sheila, Jeremy, David did a great job. The program ended with a finale by the teachers and students. The participants left an everlasting impression on the audience who witnessed the astonishing talents.

The principal Sir AP Singh in his address was appreciative and said we raised the bar and Indeed we did.

From 27th-30th of October 2011, we the Grade 6-8 students of GMIS went on a trip to Singapore. We were very excited all along the way. We landed at the Terminal 3 of the Changi Airport and headed to Park Hotel Clarke Quay for relaxing and got ready for our dinner in a restaurant nearby our hotel. We walked to the J Hooter Restaurant on Clarke Quay Road for 20 minutes from our hotel. After we’d eaten in J Hooter, we played Slingshoot! Well, since it’s a very scary and extreme ride, most of us were scared to take the ride, only 4-5 of our friends took the ride. Afterwards, we walked to 7Eleven to buy snacks. There’s no fun to go to Singapore without going to Universal Studio. We also went there and got a One-Day Pass! When we’re still having fun at Universal Studio rain poured down which got us wet. Then we enjoyed the indoor rides such as The Revenge of The Mummy, Shrek 3D, etc. Having fun at the Universal Studio made us hungry and tired. We went to The Arches Restaurant at Sentosa.ShoppIng Day! As you know that Orchard Road has a lot of shopping centers such as Isetan, Forum and Ion. We went there to buy things like toys, books, stationery, clothes and Halloween stuff. We returned to the hotel for swimming because that night we were going to Night Safari. At Night Safari, we went to Ulu Ulu for dinner before we started our night adventure with the animals. We saw a lot of different kinds of animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and so on. Back at the hotel we had a Halloween night in our rooms and started packing our bags to go back home to Jakarta the next morning. We felt we wanted to stay longer at Singapore to have some more fun, but we had to go back home. We checked out from the hotel and headed towards the Changi Airport. At the airport, we all checked in and went to immigration. After that, we shopped again for our friends, relatives and our parents while we’re waiting for the airplane. We returned home with sweet mmemories.

SINGAPORE TRIP

The grade 9 Sukabumi trip was absolutely amazing and out of the world. We had lots of fun with our teachers, friends, and trainers and will cherish this memory forever. During our stay in Sukabumi, we experienced new and wondrous things that we had never experienced before. There, we learnt how to be disciplined as we were away from our parents, learnt how to take care of ourselves and others. It is difficult to imagine that we could be happy even when were denied the everyday conveniences that we are so dependent on. Away from luxuries such as warm water, electronic devices and a sprawling bed, we observed the true beauty of nature in harmony. The activities carried out were very interesting and challenging. We had very little time to think of strategies and ideas on how to solve the problem given and win the game. These kinds of games help us to develop our thinking skills and sharpen our senses. The toughest challenge that we had to face was the two hour trek in the rubber forest. It was really tiring yet very challenging. I was taught how to use a compass to find the direction and capture the seven flags. My legs and arms were crisscrossed with scratches from tree branches. I had the ambition to beat the other team so bad I ran through holes and fell down. But in the end, we still lost. The best part of the trip was the campfire. During the campfire, the view was really mesmerizing, the view that you don’t get to see everyday. I sang in joy until I lost my voice, but it was really worth it. Rafting was extremely enjoyable. It felt like I was riding on a rollercoaster when the boat bumped on rocks and mini waves. Overall, the trip was refreshing and marvelous, a trip that we will never forget.

“Bushido”, the principles that have guided the Samurai of Japan for ages became embedded in the grade 8 play, Bushido, The Way of The Warrior. To be able to bring in a little bit of historical accuracy but still be able to do justice to John Logan’s script was a huge challenge in itself.

The play was action packed with the samurai Katanas on one side and The Howitzers on the other. The challenge was very clear, the students of Grade 8s had comedy as their forte and the teachers were determined to give them a chance to grow and take the next step. The plot had a very serious and action oriented base. They say,” No guts no glory” and the courage of the students did lead them to that glory. Kenneth as Captain Jules Brunet, Billy as Satsumoto, Lutandio as Omura and Nicholas as the Historian Graham inspired everyone.

provide the play with an authentic Japanese look, the Art department took up the challange and provided us with a stage set up the

fall, lightning, thunder and war scenes was awesome. The manner in which the students carried out their roles and the war scenes

The session began with a bang, literally and has opened the doors to more exciting plays for the session. The principles of Bushido become the guiding principles for all of us.

“Toward the bus now!” Said Sir Philip. It was the 4th of November 2011 and the 8th grader going to Bandung. We departed from school at around 8 in the morning and were heading to Trans Studio Bandung. It was a 3 hours road trip. As soon as we reached there, we went up to the Trans Studio. “Wow!” That’s the first word we said as we came in. it was really big, with lots of hilarious rides. There were the fastest roller coaster which was extremely scary but enjoyable, haunted house, water slide, etc. There was parade too. As we finished our day there, we were immediately headed to our villa. It was the amazing villa I had ever been in my school trips. It was big, many rooms, dining table and swimming pool too!

The next day was the day when we went to treetop outbound. It was the most challenging game ever. There were flying fox, etc. We finished at around 12 and enjoy our lunch at the villa. In the evening, we swam together in the swimming pool at the villa which was the best moment ever. That night, we were in Kampung Daun which was really nice and good. We sang together happily. Later, we had a bonfire camp in

our villa, a true unforgettable memories. That was the last night of our trip. That next morning, we went to Paris Van Java for some refreshing shopping. We had lunch there and in the evening we headed back to our home town, Jakarta. This trip was the most memo-rable trip ever.Angie, Princessa, Michelle – (8E)

component of drama”, was what he said to GMIS students during his ephemeral yet valuable session with them. The whole session was dedicated to comprehending the meaning of “Rhythm” with activities ranging from simple clapping to flamenco dancing. You can hear them, you can hear their rhythm; a simple transforming into a more intricate pattern. The students were also given random words and divided into groups of 6. Thereby, they had to form a rhythmic sentence, having a particular rhyme scheme or a definite syllable emphasis pattern. The session ended with Mr. David Folley delivering a brief talk on “Othello” a play by Shakespeare and analyzing passages that the students study in class. This workshop was very practical, and it gave the students great insight into Shakespeare’s works.

By the end of the session, the students gained a huge amount of Shakespearean knowledge, a benefit that would definitely help them in the future.

Edrick (Gr. 11)

English has always been one of the areas students all around the globe see as difficult, challenging, or even boring especially in works of “Literature”. Works studied in Literature are not those fun fantasy novels we see nowadays, they are ancient works like Shakespeare’s which are extremely difficult to comprehend and analyze. Students thus require professional guidance from experts to excel in this challenging field. The students in the Gandhi Memorial International School were privileged to enjoy an extremely educative and learning session from Mr. David Folley, an experienced person in the field of drama. He has travelled around the globe giving numerous performances based on Shakespeare’s plays.

Mr. David Folley’s session with the GMIS students was not the clichéd type of session one would expect from a lecturer; it was extremely interactive; inundated with diverse activities pointing towards one end: “Drama”, “Understanding ‘Rhythm’ is the essential

On the 29th of October, 17 students and 4 teachers went to Singapore for a field trip, which was for a duration of 3 days and 2 nights. We traveled to Singapore by Garuda Indonesia plane. We

assembled at the airport at 4.30 am, with great enthusiasm and excitement.

From the airport, we directly went to Sentosa island to visit the interesting Science center. Here we explored the history of Singapore through beautiful images and watched a short presentation. This was followed by a delicious lunch.

The second day was the day we were all looking forward to, the visit to Universal studios. We enjoyed the fun filled rides and spent more than 5 hours there. Refreshed by these rides, we had our dinner and continued our journey to Night safari tour. We went back to our cozy and comfortable hotel room at 9pm.

On Monday the 31st of October, we spent the whole day shopping. We shopped the first time with our friends. We bought gifts for our family and friends. It was now time to say goodbye to Singapore and go to the airport to reach our homes. Filled with heavy hearts we wished our friends and teachers goodbye.

This trip was the best experience, I have had in my life. I wish to go again with my friends and enjoy once more.

LEARNING FOR LIFE“Live out of your imagination not your history”

Stephen R. Covey

As an lB educator, these words are the cornerstone of the IB philosophy of good teaching practices, and being a life long learner. The emphasis that IB puts on the professional development stems from the research that has been undertaken that suggests that good professional development can lead to value being added to the teaching learning environment in a school. In striving to lead by example, GMIS teachers shared their wealth of experience as an IB educator, with the Indonesian community of educators. On November 19, 2011 presentations on various aspects of IB were shared in the Indonesian Schools IB Teacher’s Conference, focusing on “Critical thinking across the IB continuum”. The presenters were Mr. Bharath Rao on “Developing critical thinking through the MYP Personal Project”, Ms. Sweta Avisek on “The MYP-DP continuum” and Ms. Gurpreet on “Ideas for life- unit planner as a tool”. As a school promoting teachers to extend the boundaries of their thinking and developing new ways to engage the 21st century learners is the way to creating new milestones in academic excellence.

The grand voyage has come to an end, to the accompaniment of tears and laughter. No, it is not an end, but just a completion. Our capabilities, as well as immense passion and zeal, resulted in the successful staging of the Grade 12 Annual Play, William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, on the 19th of November, 2011.‘Othello’ was not the effort of an individual, but a joint production of the Class of 2012, backed by the ardent theatre loving GMIS community. It was a challenge that we had to overcome hand in hand, as it would write a new page in the history of GMIS, etch an indelible memory into our minds and souls - a precious experience that we will cherish all our lives.Grade 12 is a phase in a student’s life when there is not a moment to waste, a period of vigorous activity characterized by the ongoing struggle to meet deadlines of IB internal assessments, and to cope with the pressure of college applications, SATs and TOEFLs. There were numerous times when we felt the limits, desperate that we would not be able to manage and balance the tight schedule of play practices and school work. But every time we fell into such canyon of hopelessness, we persevered with unwavering determination and tenacity, reluctant to give up a challenge which, although instigated by an initial curiosity, had unknowingly transformed into a common vital responsibility. This play was intended to inspire and provide the Grade 11s with some enlightening idea about ‘Othello’, which they have as a text for the Part 2 of their IB English requirement. However, most importantly, this show was to be held for the purpose of a good cause - to provide donations for Community and Service (CAS), an integral part of the curriculum. Our mentor, the Principal of our school, Mr. A. P. Singh, and our esteemed directors boosted the morale of the cast and the production team with motivation and encouragement. Thus, the cast rose to meet the demands of the histrionics, and the production crew delivered the professional technicalities called for. And nally, the long-awaited premiere night arrived, and a sense of tranquility and silence dominated the auditorium, ‘the calm before the storm.’The crimson curtains parted to disclose the fruits of our labour - three months of hard work squeezed compact into a hundred minute play. The actors performed brilliantly, and the overall effect of their acting was magnied by the stage effects of the vibrant lights, the reverberating sounds, the period properties, and the dramatic settings. Till the very last moment of the play, everyone put in their sweat and blood, in eager hope that the audience will warmly receive a super performance. At the end of it all, the overwhelming applause and standing ovation from the audience greeted the crew, and they rejoiced in their newly achieved victory by shouting, “We did it!”‘Othello’ has been, is, and will be, a priceless experience to all of us involved. Not only has it enabled us to make valuable connections with peers from different cultural backgrounds, but has also given us opportunities to grow and look back with pride at what we have achieved together. It was indeed a time when we were able to realize our strengths and weaknesses, and learn that we can overcome whatever obstacles may be hurled in our way. Our spirits are indomitable! We have arrived. Life, here we come!

The ramp walk was worth watching and very encouraging for our preschoolers. We thank our dear Principal, Mr. A.P. Singh, Supervisor - Ms. Precy and Coordinators, Ms. Rachna and Mr. Danny for always encouraging us to pursue ahead.

Grade 1 students learn about community helpers and get to know their jobs, costumes and tools. But nothing great is achieved by mere classroom learning. So, the students set out on a field trip to Kidzania on the 20th of September 2011 to experience what it feels to be the community helpers they learn about in class. They tried almost everything: from piloting a simulated airplane to baking cookies; from driving cars and getting their own licenses to treating sick dolls in a doctor’s clinic; from selling things in a supermarket to putting out fires;the children enjoyed every bit of the field trip. The level of enthusiasm remained high and constant throughout; some liked painting walls whereas others liked catching thieves as a cop; some loved the pizza making activity while others enjoyed being hairdressers. The children were so overwhelmed that they decided firmly what they wished to do in future! The field trip was a major success; not because the children enjoyed it, but because they learnt so much of it while enjoying it.Summing it up in three words: “JOY IN EFFORT”!
