Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School NEWSLETTER 04, 12 March 2014 Last week I had the privilege of attending the WA Catholic Principal’s Conference in Broome along with 96 other Principals from Western Australia and a few from the Northern Territory. It was lovely to return to the Kimberley where I spent 14 years of my early teaching career in indigenous communities and towns both in the East and West Kimberley. This was the first regional conference outside Perth for Catholic Primary School Principals and a chance for us to visit our remote Kimberley colleagues. The theme of the conference was ‘Sharing Stories...Envisioning the future’ which included a traditional indigenous welcome to country-smoking ceremony, Bishop Christopher Saunders speaking on the history of Catholic Education in the Kimberley, Keynote Noel Pearson speaking on Effective Instruction within schools, Kimberley Principals, indigenous parents and an inspirational talk from Sr Pat Rhatigan, who was instrumental in setting up many of the Catholic Schools in the region. The conference emphasised the co-responsibility our system has, ensuring all Catholic schools across our state have access to the best teaching resources and staffing resources for all Catholic students. Thank you to Mrs Christian and Mr Burns for looking after the school in my absence. I would like to welcome back Mrs Karen Forster who has once again joined our staff. Even though we said goodbye to Karen at the conclusion of last year she will now work as an Educational Assistant two mornings a week. I was told of the lovely prayer service for Ash Wednesday that was held last week. The Poverty of Jesus “frees us and enriches us”. Pope Francis wrote this in his Lenten Message made public last Tuesday. His message concentrates on poverty, in particular on Christ's poverty. The Pope, in fact, begins by explaining that Jesus “became poor, so that by his poverty we might become rich”. Christ's choice for poverty, the Pontiff states, suggests a positive dimension to the state of being poor. Thank you to Miss Guazzelli for organising this service. It was also a sad time as the school community farewelled Assistant Parish Priest Father Marcello. Father has left for his new parish of Broome and we wish him all the best. The busyness of the new school year continued all of last week with Three Way Interviews. Thank you to all families who made the time to meet with class teachers and set realistic educational goals for the semester. If you were unable to make your meeting please ensure that you contact the class teacher to organise an alternative time. I am looking forward to our first ever Movie Night this coming Friday on our school oval. I know that our Parent Group has been racing around getting things organised. It will be a night to remem- ber. If you have not secured your tickets please email [email protected]. And finally if you have not done so already, please sign up to the school Twitter account @GSKelmscott and see what is happening in your child's class and school each day. Project Compassion

Our school will once again be involved in “Project Compas-

sion” during Lent in 2014. Project Compassion is an annual

fundraising initiative set up by Caritas Australia to raise

money for others who are less fortunate than ourselves. This

year there is a particular theme of justice and focuses on the

countries of Brazil, Sudan, Philippines, Solomon Islands,

Australia and Sri Lanka. Each child should have received a

donation box and information leaflet. There will also be class

and school donation boxes that will be collected every week

during Lent.

Reconciliation Thank you to the children, parents and staff who attended the

recent Reconciliation Workshop facilitated by Mildred Rego

from the Catholic Education Office. There will be further

workshops in the future for the Sacraments of Confirmation

and First Eucharist. Parents please note the following

important dates for children participating in First

Reconciliation:

Friday, 28 March—Reconciliation Retreat Day.

Venue : Good Shepherd School 8.30am-3.00pm

Friday, 4 April—First Reconciliation.

Venue Good Shepherd School at 5.30pm.

Lent and Easter

Thank you to Miss Guazzelli and the Year 3 class who lead

the school in an Ash Wednesday prayer service last week.

This marked the start of Lent. All students prepared their

lenten promises before the service and these were placed on

the prayer focus. Parents please note that during Lent a cross

will be placed around the school as we journey with Jesus

during this time. Stations of the Cross will be held on

Wednesday, 9 April at 9.30am. All parents and parishioners

are invited to journey with us around our beautiful school

grounds on this morning .

Weekly Prayer

Dear God,

This Easter we thank You for all the things that You have done for us.

We thank You for sacrificing Your life for us, so we can live a happy life.

Thank You for Lent and Easter because Easter is family time.

Amen.

Take a moment with..... Kahli

Name: Kahli

Year Level: Four

What do you enjoy most about Religious

Education lessons?

I enjoy that you get to learn more about our catholic religion and the

Pope.

What are you learning about in Religious Education lessons at the

moment?

We are learning how the Pope became elected, what the Pope’s name is

and what he has done before he became the Pope. We have also been

learning some interesting facts about Pope Francis.

What does it mean to you to learn through faith, love and laughter?

To learn more, to share faith with others and to take care of everyone.

How have you shown respect in 2014?

I have not been rude or mean to teachers and students on the playground,

on the oval and in class.

Thanks Kahli

Each newsletter in the Religious Education and Pastoral Care

section we will be profiling a member of our Good Shepherd

Catholic community to hear their thoughts and views on our

school and what it means to be a member of such a fantastic

community. This weeks “take a moment with” profile is Kahli

from Year Four.

Reconciliation Time Change—Important

There has been a time change for Year 3 Reconciliation on Friday, 4

Student Absentee Notes If a student is going to be away or late for school please call the school before 8.30am.

When a student is away sick please be reminded that a phone call is not a substitute for a signed note. We remind families that a dated and signed note or alternatively an email must be sent to your child’s teacher. Please note, if using the email option, that the ‘from’ address is not sufficient as it does not necessarily contain the full name of the person sending it. A full name must be typed at the end of the message. A sick note must contain the following information: • the name of the student • the class/roll group of the student • the reason for the absence • the full name of the parent/guardian at the end of the message. Thank you for your co-operation.
