For exam ple:

1.I cut m y hair m yself . * In this exam ple " I" does the action of cutting the hair and at the sam e tim e " I" gets the action of the hair being cut.

2.W e defended ourselves brilliantly. * In this exam ple the reflexive pronoun "ourselves" refers ba ck to the subject of the sentence.

John talks to him self w hen he is nervous

* In this exam ple "H im self" refers to John.

R eflexive pronouns alw ays act as objects not subjects , and they require an interaction betw een the

subject and an object.

For exam ple:

B ecause she w as not hungry w hen the cake w as served, E llen saved herself a piece. * In the independent clause, "E llen" is the subject and "herself" is a reflexive pronoun acting as the indirect object. This sentence is gram m atically correct .

Jhon and m yself are going to the m ovie. * In this sentence, " Jhon" and "m yself" are the subjects. R eflexive pronouns cannot be subjects.

This sentence is gram m atically incorrect .

C are m ust be taken to identify w hether the noun is singular or p lural and choose the pronoun accordingly.

For exam ple:

N or is she shy about giving herself credit for it. W e gave ourselves a second chance to com plete the course. D id they lock them selves out of the house again? G ive yourselves a pat on the back for a job w ell done.

N ote: The reflexive pronoun can also be used to give m ore em phasis to the subject or object

(intensive pronoun).

For exam ple:

I did it m yself . * I w ant to em phasise the fact that I did it.

E xam ples:

H e w ashed him self . She look ed at herself in the m irror. D iabetics give them selves insulin shots several tim es a day. A fter the party, I asked m yself w hy I had faxed invitations to everyone in m y
