Welcome....For newcomers to Gwinnett, the Reader’s Choice

awards are a nice way to get an idea of what the locals like, from their favorite place to get a hamburger to

the place they most prefer golf. But the awards — voted on by the readers during a nearly two-month period — are also informative for longtime residents of Gwinnett, bringing to light a Thai restaurant you might not be familiar with or an auto mechanic that gets good marks from its customers.

Reader’s Choice includes seven categories — food and fun, cars, home, family fun, feel good, pets and Gwinnett life — and there are winners and runners-up mentioned in every cat-egory. Enjoy perusing the lists and seeing the winners — your winners — in each category.

A guide to events in Gwinnett’s cities

Gwinnett County is an event-driven place. Through-out the year you can find festivals and celebrations, ranging from New Year’s Eve on the square in Law-renceville to the annual Su-wanee Beer Festival in May to the Gwinnett County Fair in September.

The following is a city by city look at some events you won’t want to miss:

Buford: The His-toric Plein Air Festival is something a little different, celebrating outdoor artistry in April. Artists are asked to depict a Buford site, and sit outdoors while they paint it. The city also has an annual holiday parade to celebrate Christmas.

Dacula: The Dacula Memorial Day parade is this town’s jewel. Held for the past 21 years, the event honors Memorial Day with a fantastic parade and events throughout the day, including a 5K race.

Duluth: The city gets much use out of its Town Green, from movies shown during its Flicks on the Bricks campaign to the Barefoot In The Park arts festival held in May. But the city’s signature event is its annual Fall Festival. With arts and crafts and food vendors and entertainment, this festival draws upwards of 80,000 people to down-town Duluth during the last weekend in September.

Grayson: It has its an-nual Grayson Day festival in April and its beer festival in September has become a major draw, combining a chance to sample craft beer while listening to live music.

Lawrenceville: The

county seat doesn’t lack for major events, like the aforementioned New Year’s Eve celebration called Lawrenceville Rings. Law-renceville also does up the Christmas holiday with the annual lighting of the tree event on the town square on Thanksgiving evening and its Spring Green festival in March.

Lilburn: The city’s signature event is Lilburn Daze, held this year on Oct. 11. The one-day event features crafts, rides, games and is very family friendly. It is hosted by the Lilburn Women’s Club.

Norcross: In additon to the city’s annual Inde-pendence Day celebration, Norcross hosts the Blues-berry Festival in June. The event features local blue-berries, craft beer and blues music.

Peachtree Corners: Gwinnett’s newest city hosts the Peachtree Corners Festival this June 14-15, featuring a 5K and 10K run, arts, entertainment and a car show. The event is always held the second week in

June.Snellville: This city has

many events but its signa-ture one is Snellville Days in May. The event features a parade in addition to crafts, foods and live music. It also hosts a Fall Festival in October and this past Memorial Day opened a Veterans Memorial that figures prominently in Me-morial Day ceremonies.

Sugar Hill: With its new City Hall and amphithe-ater, Sugar Hill is striving to add more events. The city has its annual Sparks in the Park Fourth of July celebration, complete with fireworks, and has a Fall Festival held in October.

Suwanee: There are no shortage of events in Suwanee, but one of the biggest is the Suwanee Beer Festival held in March. The beer fest draws major crowds to Suwanee Town Park, as does Suwanee Fest, held in September as well as a couple of pet-friendly events including the Georgia SPCA’s Run for the Rescues 5K in March.

— From staff reports

One of Suwanee’s biggest events is the Suwanee Beer Festival held in March, which draws major crowds to Su-wanee Town Park. (File Photo)
