The books about Baby Sister have become modern classics. Children just love them and want to read them again and again. But things don’t always work out as planned.

My Book of Questions

Original title: Undreboka miIllustrator: Kari GrossmannCategory: Picture booksAge range: 0-4Number of pages: 48

In My Book of Questions Kari Grossman addresses some of the most important funny, strange, wise and tricky questions that children pose. Each question is accompanied by detailed illustrations that can be used as a starting point for interaction. Most of these ques-tions aren’t easily answered, and new questions are bound to arise as one reads together. The questions concern you and me, emotions, reality and imagination, and life and death. What is love? Are there things that everyone must do, and how much is many?

Cathrine GrøndahlEight Princesses in the Stomach. Poems for children

Original title: Åtte prinsesser I magen. Dikt for barnIllustrator: Rune Johan AnderssonCategory: Read aloud books Age range: 4-8Number of pages: 40

Cathrine Grøndahl has written poems about the young, strong-willed princess many of us know – the princess who is extremely charming when it suits her, or just uncooperative enough when that suits her better. We accompany the prin-cess into her castle, out on adventures, to princess birthdays and in quarrels with princes.

Grøndahl’s humorous turn of phrase and Andersson’s cha-racteristic illustrations make this an enjoyable book to read aloud for big and small princesses – and for anyone else who has a small Royal Highness in the family.

What do grownups do after they have read us a bedtime story, turned off the light and set the door ajar?

Do they eat fish and boiled carrots? Or do they fetch the crisps? Do they whistle old tunes? Or do they kiss on the mouth?

An inquisitive and philosophical picture book about the mysteries of grownup life after bedtime.

It isn’t easy to be a small elf boy on summer vacation when all Mummy wants to do is lie on the couch and paint her toenails and eat chocolate. It doesn’t make matters any better when you also have to look after your caterpillar sisters. No wonder, then, that Elfis gets really excited when a little crook asks if he wants to play! But he soon learns that it is difficult to play pranks and watch over one’s baby sisters at the same time!

Camilla KuhnElfis, the Crook and the Caterpillar Sisters that Were (Almost) EatenOriginal title: Alvis, skurken og larvesøstrene som (nesten) ble spistIllustrator: Camilla KuhnCategory: Picture booksAge range: 4-8Number of pages: 32

What do you tell a child when a member of the immediate family dies? What words can express the indescribable sorrow? Bjørg Thorhallsdottir lost her husband while still young, and My Daddy Lives in Heaven is based on the book she made for her own son when his father died. The simple, poetic text and the beautiful, expressive illustrations are filled with comfort and wisdom and can be very helpful in conversations with children about death and mourning.

About the author and illustrator:Camilla Kuhn’s first book, the picture book How Grumpy Greger Entered a Duel and Everything Almost Turned Pink (2007) was received with acclamation by the press:

“A stylish and funny debut“ (Aftenposten)

“A grumpy old man has charmed his way to the top in our presentation of new picture books” (Vårt Land)

– Men holddeg unna badedammen. Skurkepappan ler sådet skinner i gulltennene hans.

Junior and TwigsonOriginal title: Lillebror og KnertenIllustrators: Johan Vestly, Svein SamuelsenSeries: Twigson / KnertenCategory: Read aloud books Age range: 4-8Number of pages: 170

A new edition of the first book in Anne Cath. Vestly’s popular series. It isn’t always easy to be the youngest family mem-ber. It can also be lonely, especially when the family has just moved to a new place, mother works, father commutes and big brother Philip is at school all day. Luckily Junior finds a pine root that looks just like a little person. He names him Twigson, and Twigson becomes his best friend, someone he can confide in and share everything with.

Faithful TwigsonOriginal title: Trofaste KnertenIllustrators: Johan Vestly, Svein SamuelsenSeries: Twigson / KnertenCategory: read aloud books Age range: 4-8Number of pages: 168

Twigson is faithful and kind, but he also has his own opin-ions, so Junior has to come to an agreement with him about what they shall do. While mother is working in the shop, they perform small errands for the shop man, or they visit Auntie Everywhere and Tiny. Spring has arrived, and there are plenty of exciting things to see in the shop window at Horses’ Corner. The most exciting thing of all is a tricycle, thinks Junior. So does Twigson. But one day the tricycle is gone ...

The Big Twigson-Book

Twigson has arms and legs and a head and looks just like a little person. He is a good companion for Junior, and Junior’s imagination is constantly fuelled by Twigson. The Big Twigson-Book consists of all the eight books about him and Junior.

The Big Book About Granny and the Eight Children

Because they live in cramped quarters and are a handful, the eight children are probably a tad more inventive than most children. Which leads to some funny situations – like when Morten invites four pigs over for coffee and Mina and Milly meet a whiskerbear in the woods. Then it’s good to be eight siblings and a long dog who can help each other out. And a Granny of course, who keeps a cow in her room.

The Big Book About Granny and the Eight Children consists of all the five books about Granny and the others.

Guests arrive at the hotel to join Linnea and Elines’ father’s cooking class. Additionally, the foreign lady and her daughter are already living there. Oskar sees the little girl shoplifting a brand new mobile phone.

Oskar, Linnea and Eline keep a close eye on the little girl and the strange guest who crops up. He frightens the mother and her daughter. What exactly is going on?

The eight year olds Torjus and Miro are allowed to join a scientific expedition to North-Eastern Greenland, one of the most remote areas in the world. In this book they tell us about all the exciting things they experienced on the trip, about encounters with muskoxen, calving ice-bergs, polar bear footprints and about the children they played with in the small community of Ittoqqortoormiit. In addition to the boys’ travelogue, we learn interesting facts about animals and nature, expeditions, geology and climate change. The prize-winning photographer Thomas Ulrich participated in the expedition and took the amazing pictures in the book.

The book has four major strands of information. They are 1) ice and climate, 2) geology and deep time, 3) biology, and 4) history and culture. These four strands run through the book, and they are woven together by the travel story. All strands come together in the Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, where different waves of Inuit have settled near a special geological phenomenon, hot springs from cold ground. The Inuit live from hunting, and are profoundly affected by the climate and its ongoing change.

Let’s travel back in time to the Viking age and to one of the first towns in Scandinavia. Through twelve short stories we get to know children and adolescents in the town Kaupang in the 9th century A.D. Each story is followed by a text discerning between what is fact and what can only be guessed at. The fact material is based on all that archaeologists and other researchers have discovered through their research on jewelry, coins, insect remains, animal bones, houses, wells and toilets. Trond Bredesen’s illustrations show children in Kaupang, and photos from the excavation and the artefacts found serve to spur the imagination on.

Bingo! Mange fisk i garnet!

Her i båten føler jeg meg innestengt i overlevelsesdrakten.

Sola veier hundre ganger mer enn alle planetene.

FIRE MILLIONER TONN I SEKUNDET!

ATOMER

Det finnes over hundre

iCoN is a series of biographies of the 20th century’s greatest idols, released in 2008. Each story is written by authors with a real passion for their subject. Several hundred youths have helped choose the icons that are portrayed.

Cecilie AskerICON Madonna

Ambitious, provocative, trendsetting, wilful, committed, hardworking ... Ever since her childhood as a Catholic schoolgirl outside of Detroit, Madonna has headed straight for fame and star-dom. But how did a seemingly mediocre singer and dancer manage to become the greatest female pop artist ever? In this book Cecilie Asker tells her tale of the icon and tries to solve the Madonna riddle once and for all.

Harald HenmoICON Che Guevara

Ernesto “Che” Guevara is one of the 20th century’s most myth-surrounded characters. He was the middle class boy who studied medicine but gave up his career and his homeland and joined the Cuban revolution. He was a dreamer and an idealist, but also a ruthless guerrilla commander. In the 1960’s he played a central part in the building of the new Cuban society as head of the Central Bank and Minister of Industry, but he died an undernourished, disillusioned man in the Bolivian jungle. Today his image is used to front anything from the anti-globalization movement to com-mercial industry, and it has become all but impossible to separate the man from the myth.

SteinjoICON Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was one of the great-est pop artists of all times, but his last years were marked more by trials and bizarre incidents. The writer Stein Johan “Steinjo” Grieg Halvorsen is known from the NRK comedy series Slå på ring. He has been a fanatic Michael Jackson fan most of his life. In this book he tells his own, highly personal story about the icon.

Stein Erik LundeThe Biography of Amalie Skram

Amalie Skram was an outspoken and beautiful woman with a host of suitors, but it wasn’t until after her death that she won true recognition as a significant naturalistic writer. Her books caused commotion and disparagement in their day, particu-larly due to their harsh criticism of men’s sexual morals. This book provides a warm and living portrait of a turbulent life and enthusiastic introductions to all her major works.

Siri SenjeThe Biography of Camilla Collett

Camilla Collett was in the midst of things in the 1800’s. She was the first Norwegian woman to make a name for herself as an author – with Norway’s first novel using everyday material, and she spearheaded the struggle for women’s right to make their own choices. At the same time she led an unusually dramatic life as the sister of Henrik Wergeland, deeply in love with his worst enemy Welhaven, and as a poverty-stricken single mother of four when her husband died. This is the first Camilla Collett biography written for adolescents, and is a touching and engaging story it is easy to be enraptured by.
