In an important milestone for our organization, the Order of St. George has been officially recognized as a Non-governmental organization (NGO), with special consultative status, by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

This valuable status enables us to engage officially with ECOSOC as well as with the United Nations Secretariat and UN programmes.

Representatives of the Order of St. George can now participate in UN conferences and events, and can sit as observers in meetings of ECOSOC and the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, and other UN intergovernmental decision-making bodies.

The Order can now also submit written statements to the UN Council, and allows the Order to designate official representatives to the UN Headquarters in New York and the UN offices in Geneva and Vienna.

”Gaining official UN status is another step forward in the international development of our Order and its work,” said our Grand Prior, Chevalier Simon McIlwaine. “It is recognition of the growing professionalism in the way in which we operate, and I should like to thank all of those within the Order for their hard work in making official UN status for our organization a reality.”

The Order can now designate official representatives to the United Nations in New York. u

Striding forward in North America

The Order has an exciting future planned for our work in the United States and Canada, led by our active North American Grand Commandery.

Central to the Order’s development will be the establishment of Encampments of the Order in selected US states and Provinces of Canada. As these grow they will form the basis of new Commanderies. Chevalier Col. Adam Such looks to develop a future Commandery in Chandler, Arizona; Chevalier Capt. Steven Dieter in Ottawa, Canada, and Chevalier Herb Rivera will build one in Baltimore Maryland. Yet another encampment opportunity is developing in western Canada.

The Order’s main charitable aim for our North American activities is to provide aid to persecuted Christian Communities in the Middle

East, particularly to the Anglican Church of St George in Baghdad, and the Coptic Christians of Egypt – both communities coming under very literal siege from fundamentalist elements in those countries.

The Order’s Executive Council is made up of accomplished, mature executives with experience on grappling with issues. The immediate goal is to begin organizing fundraising events and establishing a public presence in local communities.

“As we embarked on our first formal Executive Council, I realized how much has been accomplished in a short period of time,” says Chevalier Col. Robert

Soderstrom KJ, GCStG, Commander of the Grand Commandery. “All the while our membership continues to grow. We have much to look forward to. It is an exciting time for the Order. A new door is opening with many new opportunities to help the downtrodden and those in much need.”

Our Annual Atlanta Investiture will take place from 9-11 October with approximately 15 new candidates, both Dames and Chevaliers, taking part.

ATLANTA

pWe were delighted to hear that our Patron, Bishop Angaelos, GCStG, General Bishop of

the Coptic Church in the UK, had been awarded an OBE for services to international religious

freedom in the Queen’s Honours List. Here, the Bishop and friends enjoy a celebratory cake.

Join the Copts in prayer and celebration

Come along to two important London events the Coptic community is organizing, and to which members of the Order are invited.

On Friday 16 October, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, following the regular Evensong service, there will be a special service in the Order of the British Empire Chapel for those persecuted for their religion or belief around the world. And on Thursday 22 October, in St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, we will commemorating the Coptic Feast of Nayrouz, marking the new Coptic Year.

Are you up for a tandem parachute jump?

A challenge has been laid down by the Master Cutler. In 2016 two members of each

affiliated organisation are sought for a tandem parachute jump. Sponsorship will be raised

for the Army Tigers (PWRR Welfare Fund).

You don’t have to have military experience to do this – just chutzpah and a willingness to

raise sponsorship. Contact the Grand Prior at [email protected] for details.

Order of St. George team wins army competitionA team led by Grand Prior Simon McIlwaine and Deputy Grand Prior Mark Haley competed with the Cutlers, the Needlemakers, and other livery companies in the annual affiliates’ competition and open day hosted by our Regiment, the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment at Hythe Ranges, near Lydd in Kent – one of the most remote parts of South East England and one of the largest military ranges in the UK.

The day consisted of first aid scenarios, camouflage, observation, pistol and rifle competions and a quiz on regimental history. Lt Col Andy Betts presented the winning trophy shield to the Grand Prior at the dinner afterwards, the Order having taken it from last year’s

champions, the Worshipful Company of Cutlers. The Order is making a further grant of £1500 to the Regimental Welfare fund and Grand Prior McIlwaine raised over £850 in sponsorship for the Tigers on his walk from Hampton Court to the Tower of London on 26th September!

pBaroness Caroline Cox, GCStG, second from left, with guests at the House of Lords dinner.

Dinner at the Lords

The House of Lords was the sumptuous setting for a grand dinner organized by the British Association of Chevaliers of Saint Stanislas, at which the host was Colonel The Baroness Cox, GCStG, one of the Patrons of the Order of St. George. Baroness Cox spoke on the current situation in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh – lands for which she has a passionate concern. The event raised funds for Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) of which Baroness Cox is CEO.

The Chevaliers of St. Stanislas’ Grand Prior of Great Britain & Chancellor for the Commonwealth of Nations, Steven J Turner, GCStS, is also a Chevalier of the Order of St. George. Our Grand Scrivener, Stuart A Notholt, GCStG (who is a former HART employee) also represented the Order.

Many thanks to all our supporters, who have made possible these recent donations by the Order.

THE ORDER

IN

ACTION

As well as being the Patron Saint of England, St. George is the Patron of soldiers and of Christians in Africa and the Middle East. Following this tradition we work for the welfare of UK and NATO armed forces personnel, and in support of vulnerable Christian communities.

In the UK we support the Royal Hospital Chelsea and our affiliated regiment, the 3rd

Battalion of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Welfare Fund.

Internationally, we are particularly proud of our links with the Coptic community in Egypt, and with the Anglican Church in Baghdad, whose vicar emeritus, the Rev Canon Andrew White, is our Order’s Spiritual Protector.

We operate through a number of Commanderies (regional chapters) in

the UK and also in North America, where our work is led by the excellent team at our North American Commandery.

We welcome into membership ladies and gentlemen who wish to be involved in the Order’s charitable work. For information about joining the Order of St. George, please see the Joining the Order page on our website: http://tinyurl.com/OStGJoin

The Order of Saint George takes its inspiration from the ancient and honourable Christian Order of Knighthood founded in 1326 by King Károly Róbert of Hungary. Today, our Order supports charitable endeavours in four continents.
