This high-temperature laboratory furnace is a quality product that will provide many years of reliable operation if cared for and maintained properly. A significant prerequisite is the proper use of the furnace. In development and production, particular value has been placed on safety, functionality, and cost-effectiveness.
LHT/LB and LHT/LBR series high-temperature bottom-loading laboratory furnaces The electrically driven hearth allows for easy loading of the LHT/NB series high-temperature furnaces. With its circumferential heating, this furnace achieves excellent temperature uniformity. In the LHT ../..LBR models, the furnace chamber is separated from the heating elements through use of a plasma-sprayed ceramic tubular retort positioned vertically in the furnace. This design prevents a certain amount of contamination of the load and the heating elements. It is also advantageous for gas injection processes. High-quality insulation materials enable energy-saving operation and short heating times due to low heat storage and thermal conductivity. LHT series high-temperature furnaces can achieve furnace chamber temperatures of max. 1600°C, 1700°C, or 1800°C.
This product has the following additional features:
− High-quality molybdenum disilicide heating elements
− Furnace chamber lined with first-class, durable fiber materials
− Outstanding temperature distribution due to circumferential heating of furnace chamber
− Plasma-sprayed ceramic tubular retort in LBR model to prevent a certain amount of contamination and to improve the temperature distribution
− Double-walled housing with additional cooling via fans for low exterior temperatures
− Furnace chamber with volume of 2 or 8 liters; table with large footprint
− Precise electrical spindle drive with button operation for table
− Rust-free housing made of structural stainless steel sheet
− Adjustable fresh air inlet in the hearth
− Exhaust air vent in roof
− Type B thermocouples
− Switchgear with thyristors in phase angle mode
Optional Features
− Over-temperature limit controller with adjustable cutoff temperature for thermal safety class 2 in accordance with EN 60519-2 as over-temperature protection for furnace and product
− Stackable charge saggars for multilevel loading
− Protective gas connection
− Manual or automatic gas injection system
− RS 422 digital interface

Legend:
The symbols for the handling instructions for packaging are internationally defined in ISO R/780 (International Organization for Standardization) and DIN 55 402 (Deutsches Institut für Normung).
Designation Symbol Explanation
Fragile packaged goods
The symbol is attached for mildly fragile goods. Goods so labeled must be handled with care and under no circumstances allowed to fall or be tied.
Up
The packaging item must always be transported, moved, and stored so that the arrow always points upwards. Rolling, Rollen, folding, significant tipping or tilting, or other types of handling are excluded. However, the loading need not be "on top".
Protect from moisture
Goods so labeled must be protected from high humidity, so they must be stored under cover. If particuarly heavy or large packaged items not be stored indoors, they must carefully be covered with tarps.
Sling here
The symbol indicates merely where the cargo should be slung, but not the method of lifting. If the symbols are applied equidistant from the middle or center of gravity, the package will hang level if the slings are of identical length. If this is not the case, the slinging equipment must be shortened on one side.

When the furnace is being set up, the following safety instructions must be followed.
− The furnace must be set up in a dry room in accordance with the safety instructions.
− The table/installation surface must be flat to enable the furnace to be installed levelly. The furnace must be placed on a nonflammable surface (stone, metal, or similar).
− The load-bearing capacity of the table must be designed to match the weight of the furnace and the accessories.
− The floor covering must be made of nonflammable material so that hot material falling out of the furnace will not cause the floor covering to ignite.
Although the furnace is well-insulated, the exterior surfaces of the furnace radiate heat. If necessary, this heat must be dissipated (a ventilation technician may need to be consulted). In addition, a minimum clearance (S) of 0.5 m on all sides and 1 m above the furnace must be maintained to flammable materials. In individual cases, more space must be chosen in order to match the local conditions. For nonflammable materials, the minimum side clearance can be reduced to 0.2 m.
If gases and vapors escape from the load, adequate aeration and ventilation at the installation location or a suitable exhaust gas discharge system must be provided. A suitable vent for the combustion exhaust air must be provided by the customer.
Fig. 6: Installation of an LHT high-temperature laboratory furnace
Warning
Ensure adequate ventilation at the installation location to discharge the heat given off and any exhaust gas formed. Failure to do so will cause a fire and health hazard.

We recommend that an exhaust air pipe be connected to the furnace to discharge the exhaust gas.
A standard commercial NW80 to NW120 metal exhaust gas pipe can be used. It must be laid so that it always slopes upwards and must be fastened to the wall or ceiling.
Center the pipe over the furnace flue. The exhaust gas pipe must not be connected to the exhaust air tube because otherwise, no bypass effect is achieved. This is needed to ensure that not too much fresh air is sucked through the furnace.
Fig. 7: Assembly of a vent pipe (example)
Note
The exhaust gases can only be discharged if the room is aerated via an appropriate supply air opening.
Note
Customer-side wall and roof work must be done for the exhaust gas discharge. The size and design of the exhaust gas discharge must be determined by a ventilation technician. The national regulations of the respective country apply.

4.6.1 Molybdenum Disilicide Heating Elements Pos: 89 /TD/Transport_Montage_Inbetriebnahme/Erstinbetriebnahme/Heizelemente aus Molybdän-Disilizid @ 2\mod_1186644042985_51.doc @ 20858
Chemical resistance: Furnaces heated with molybdenum disilicide elements (MoSi2) are available for max. furnace chamber temperatures of 1600, 1750 and 1800°C. The max. furnace chamber temperature refers to operation in air. At temperatures of over 800°C, a layer of silicon oxide occurs on the surface of the heating element, protecting it against further oxidation. Such a protective layer is not formed at low temperatures. If the surface of the element is not protected, molybdenum and silicon oxidation can take place at temperatures of around 550°C. This leads to the occurrence of a yellowish powder consisting primarily of molybdenum oxide (MoO3). This chemical reaction has no disadvantageous effects on the performance of the heating element.
Resistance to metals and oxides: The heating elements should never come into contact with solid materials, with the exception of ceramic substrate materials.
Metals: In an oxidizing atmosphere, the majority of metals form scale on the surface (oxide formation occurs due to a thermal influence in an oxidizing atmosphere). This metal oxide may react with the silicon oxide of the heating element and shorten its service life. If the furnace is used to melt metals, it must be ensured that the furnace chamber is protected against metal splashes, soiling and vapors which occur during the melting process (particularly due to fluxing agents). Metal oxides also strongly corrode the insulation of the furnace.
Alkalines: Alkaline compounds may corrode the heating elements. Alkaline compounds also lead to rapid destruction of the insulation.
Ceramic: Ceramic may destroy the heating element on direct contact. Salts and oxides from the ceramic may additionally react with the silicon oxide of the heating element and shorten its service life.
Glass: If glass is melted, the furnace atmosphere contains contaminants, the composition of which depends on the relevant glass product. These components usually act as a fluxing agent on the silicon oxide layer. As a result, its viscosity is reduced and the silicon oxide flows slowly down the heating element. However, new silicon oxide is immediately formed again, with the result that the service life is not noticeably shortened. The insulation may also be severely corroded depending on the type of glass.

To achieve a protective oxide layer on the heating elements, the furnace must be heated to 100°C below its max. temperature in approx. 1 hour. This temperature must be maintained for approx. 1 hour. This process must be carried out on commissioning, after exchanging the heating elements or to regenerate the oxide layer. Odor pollution may occur during heating; this is due to the escape of binder from the insulating material. We recommend ventilating the furnace location well during the first heating phase.
Tears in the insulation The insulation of the furnace consists of a very high-quality refractory material. Heat expansion may cause tears in the insulation even after a few heating cycles. However, these have no affect on the function or quality of the furnace.

Charging the Furnace
Move the lifting table to the lowest position.
Only materials with known characteristics and melting temperatures may be used. Check the material safety data sheets if necessary.
When loading the furnace, ensure that the furnace lining and the heating elements (and retort pipe for LHT ../.. LBR models) do not get damaged. Ensure that you do not touch the heating elements when loading the furnace, since this can immediately destroy them.
After loading, move the lifting table to the closed position. The load should be centered on the solid ceramic rods in the working chamber and must not protrude over the edge. This ensures uniform heating. Ensure that the maximum load height (– MAX) is not exceeded; not doing so will lead to destruction of the thermocouple, the roof insulation, and the load. Ensure that the lifting table has been moved to the uppermost position.

Placing a large quantity of material in the furnace chamber can lengthen the heating time considerably.
I If a crucible is used, make sure that the material to be melted is inserted carefully into the crucible. Crucibles are sensitive to shocks and impact. Metals expand more quickly and strongly than the crucible when heated. Be sure that the recommendations of the crucible manufacturer for maintenance and handling are carefully observed.
If possible, the furnace must not be opened when hot. If it is necessary to open the furnace when hot, it must be done as quickly as possible. Ensure adequate protective clothing and room ventilation; see section entitled "Safety."
The stainless steel sheet can become discolored (especially if the furnace is opened while hot), but this does not impair the function of the furnace.
Additional Precautionary Measures Ensure that objects such as teapots and bottles are kept away from the furnace.
Warning! Electrical hazard!
To protect the operator and the furnace, always ensure that the heating program is stopped when the furnace is being loaded. Failure to do so may result in electric shock.

Transportation/Return
The furnace should be sent in the original packaging, if you still have it.
Otherwise: Use sufficiently stable packaging. Packages are often piled up, bumped against other objects, and dropped during transportation; the package serves as an outer protective layer for your furnace.
+45°C
-5°C
- All lines and containers (e.g., cooling water) must be emptied prior to transportation/return. Pump off operating materials and dispose of them suitably.
- Do not expose the furnace to extreme cold or heat (direct sunlight). Storage temperature: -5°C to 45°C (-23°F to 113°F) Air humidity: 5% to 95%, noncondensing
- Place the furnace on a level surface to prevent distortion.
- Packaging and transport work may only be performed by qualified, authorized personnel.
If your furnace was equipped with load-securing devices (see section entitled "Load Securing"), please use them. Otherwise, the following rule generally applies: Fix and secure (with tape) all moving parts; provide extra cushioning for any protruding parts and protect them from breaking off.
Protect your electronic device from penetration by moisture or loose packaging materials.
Fill the empty space inside the package with soft but sufficiently strong filler materials (e.g., foam mats), and ensure that the device cannot move inside the package.
If the product is damaged during return due to improper packaging or due to violation of any other obligation by you, the costs must be borne by the customer.
As a rule, the following applies: The furnace is shipped without accessories unless the technician explicitly requests them.
Please enclose a detailed description of the fault(s) with the furnace - this will save time for the technician and hence costs for yourself.
Please don't forget the name and telephone number of a contact for questions.
Note
Returns may only be made according to the transportation instructions given on the packaging or in the transportation documents.
Note
The costs of transportation to and from the site for repairs that are not covered by the warranty shall be paid by the customer.
