A Note from Greg Mandt, GOES-R System Program Director As you’ll see below, this spring was yet another busy time for the GOES-R Series Program! I continue to be amazed at all the hard work and dedication that so many pour into this program from all across the coun- try. I also want to thank you for the excellent feedback we received on the inaugural issue of the Quarterly Newsletter. Page 1 August 13, 2013 The Extreme Ultraviolet and X-ray Irradiance Sensor (EXIS) Flight Model 1 (FM1) completed its Pre-Shipment Review (PSR) on April 17. EXIS is the first GOES-R instru- ment ready to be integrated onto the GOES-R spacecraft. The instrument is currently in storage at the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, which built and tested EXIS. A press release was issued on May 2. On May 30, EXIS FM2 (for GOES-S) passed its Pre- Environmental Review (PER). On May 7th, the GOES-R Communications Team and Program Scientist accompaniednotedmeteorologistDanSatterfieldofWBOC-TVinSalisbury,MDtotheWal-lopsCommandandDataAcquisitionStation(WCDAS)inWallops,VA. ThegroupobservedtheGOES-RantennasunderconstructionandothersatellitedataactivitiesattheWCDAS.Mr.SatterfieldfilmedfootageforaspecialsegmentonWCDASandthecomingeraofGOES-R.ThesegmentairedonWBOC-TVonMay23andhighlightedtheroleofWCDASwithweathersatellitesandforecast-ing.ThesegmentalsofeaturedtheadvancedcapabilitiesoftheupcomingGOES-RSeriessatellitesinaninterviewwiththeProgramChiefScientist,StevenGoodman,Ph.D.SatterfieldalsohighlightedhisvisittoWCDASandthe“amazing”capabilitiesofGOES-Rinhisblog.

The GOES-R Rebroadcast (GRB) Simulatorsuccessfullyfinishedlong-termProductAcceptanceTesting(PAT)onMay26.TheGRBSimulatorDeliveryTestReviewoccurredMay28,andtheGRBSimulatorsshippedonMay29.NOAA/NESDISisplanninganindustrydayinOctobertocommencethecheck-outofthesimulatorstoindustry.Thesimulatorswillbeprovidedtovendorsthatmanufac-tureGRBreceiversinordertoverifyGRBreceivesystemcompatibilitywiththeGRBtransmission.LearnmoreaboutGOES-RRebroadcastandtheGRBsimulatorsathttp://www.goes-r.gov/users/grb.html.

The Space Environment In-situ Suite (SEISS) FM1 PERwassuccessfullyheldMay1-3inCarlisle,Mass.SEISSiscurrentlyundergoingtestinginpreparationforPSR.

Meteorologist Dan Satterfield interviews GOES-R Program Chief Scientist Steven Goodman, Ph.D about the capabilities GOES-R will provide to improve weather forecasting and warning.

GOES-R and the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Programs introduced a new fog and low clouds educa-tional poster in April.Thisresourceforstudentsexplainsfogandlowstratusclouds,howtheyform,andhowweathersatellitescanaccuratelydetectfogfromspace,improvingtransportationsafety.Theposteralsoincludesanactivitytomakefoginabottle,plusdiscussionques-tionsandalinktoanswers.TheposterisavailablefordownloadfromtheStudentResourcessectionoftheGOES-Rwebsite.

Proving Ground/Program ScienceAs part of GOES-R Proving Ground activities, NOAA’s Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) in Norman, Okla.conductedits2013SpringExperimentMay6-24.NationalWeatherServiceforecastersattendedthedemonstrationstoparticipateandprovidefeedback.ThroughouttheSpringExperiment,theGOES-Rproxyproductscontinuedtodemonstratethemselvesasessentialtoolsforfore-castersituationalawareness.OneexampleistheGOES-RConvectiveInitiationproductthatsuccessfullydetectedtheinitiationofthethunderstormsthateventuallypro-ducedthedevastatingtornadoesoverOklahomaonMay19and20.TheGOES-RProgramwillcontinuetoengageforecasterswithexpandedeffortstoincludebroadcastmeteorologistsinfutureproductdemonstrationsattheProvingGround.

GOES-R Proving Ground efforts also benefited from special Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO)withGOES-14andGOES-15inMayandJune.OnMay20,GOES-15wasinSRSOmodeforafieldcampaignandcapturedamazing1-minuteimageryofthedevastatingMoore,Okla.tornadicstorm.InJune,GOES-14wasplacedintoSRSOafteractingasabackuptoGOES-13whenitexperiencedananomaly.DuringasevereweathereventonJune13,GOES-14SRSOimagerycombinedwithdatafromtheWashington,D.C.LightningMappingArray(asproxyfortheABIandGLMrespectively)providedstun-ninganimationsdemonstratingwhatwillbeavailabletoforecastersintheGOES-Rera.LearnmoreaboutthiseventandviewanimationsattheIt’sSevereblog.

The NOAA Satellite Conference (NSC) for Direct Read-out, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS UserswasheldApril8-12attheNOAACenterforWeatherandClimatePrediction(NCWCP)inCollegePark,Md.Theconferencebroughttogetherusersandprovidersofpolar-orbiting

andgeostationarysatel-litedata,productsandapplicationsfromthepublic,privateandaca-demicperspectives,andprovidedavenueandopportunityforgreatercollaborationamongenvironmentalsatelliteusersintheWesternHemisphere.Thiscon-ferenceisparticularlyimportanttoprepareusersfortheGOES-Rera.Morethan600peopleregisteredfortheconfer-ence,takinginmorethan175posters,70

presentations,25exhibitsandpanels,tours,user

feedbacksessionsandadditionalworkshops.Presenta-tionsandpostersfromtheconferenceareavailableontheGOES-Rwebsite.

An international workshop on precipitation, lightning, and convection in BrazilinsupportoftheGlobalPrecipi-tationMeasurementandGOES-RmissionswasheldMay8-10inSanPaulo,Brazil.Morethan60scientists(bothin-personandremote)fromBrazil,Argentina,U.S.,Germany,ItalyandFranceparticipatedintheworkshop,presentingover50talks.AprimarytopicofdiscussionwastheCHUVA(“rain”inPortuguese)fieldcampaignandhowtheresultscanbeappliedtoimprovingtheforthcomingsatellitemissions.Participantsdiscussedscientificadvances,dataavailable,nextstepsinanalysis,anddetailsfornextfieldexperiment.

University of Maryland Earth System Science Inter-disciplinary Center (ESSIC)/Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) Scientists Michael Fol-mer, Ph.D. and Scott Rudlosky, Ph.D.highlightedexcit-ingnewcapabilitiesfromtheGOES-RSeriessatellitesattheNOAAScienceDaysBriefingheldinSilverSpring,Md.onMay13.NOAAScienceDayshighlightsthelatestandgreatestNOAAworkandinformsseniorNOAAleadershipofhappeningsintheagency.MichaeldescribedGOES-R’sprimaryinstrument,theABI,whileScotthighlightedtheGLM.Thetalksweredesignedtogenerateenthu-siasmandexcitementabouttheinnovativetoolsandtechniquesmadepossiblebytheGOES-RSeries.ScottalsopresentedtoasmallergroupofNOAAleadersattheHerbertHooverBuildingindowntownWashington,D.C.

The NSC conference closed with a special panel on the importance of NOAA Satellites. Panel members included Estela Collini (Director of Proj-ects, National Meteorological Service and Naval Hydrographic Service of Argentina), Mary Kicza (Assistant Administrator, NESDIS), Tom Fahey (Me-teorology Manager, Delta Air Lines, Inc.), Chris Vaughan (FEMA Geospatial Information Officer, Strategic Integration Group, Office of Response and Recovery), and Jerad Bales (Acting Associate Director for Water, USGS).

Awards and AccoladesIn May, the GOES-R Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Validation Science TeamwasawardedtheNASAGroupAchievementAward(GAA)inrecognitionoftheCHUVALightningMappingArrayexperimentinBrazil.Thelightningobservationsfromthisfieldcampaignareanimportantcontributiontotheefforttodevelop,test,andvalidateGOES-Rinstrumentalgorithmsandproducts.

In May, NOAA Supervisory Meteorologist Mark De-Mariawasnamedafinalistfortheprestigious2013

SamuelJ.HeymanServicetoAmerica(Sammy)CareerAchievementMedalforhisworkpioneeringmodelstobetterforecasttheintensityofhur-ricanesduringthepastthreedecades.DeMaria’sworkonhurricaneintensitychangehasbeenanexcellentdemon-strationofthevalueGOES-Rwillbring

toweatherforecastimprovement.Winnerswillbean-nouncedonOctober3ataWashington,D.C.gala.

On June 18, several members of the GOES-R TeamwerehonoredwithGoddardSpaceFlightCenter(GSFC)FlightProjectsDirectorate(FPD)PeerAwards.TheFPDPeerAwardspromoteandrecognizeinnovation,team-work,respectanddiligence,honoringthosewhocontrib-utetothesuccessofthedirectorate.
