The purpose of the The Winnetka Public Schools Identity & Style Manual is to establish our strategy for connecting with our community, communicating with the public, and collaborating as citizens in our digital world. The guidelines presented here are not meant to dictate all design decisions, but to aid in the creation of printed and digital materials to convey a consistent image to the public.

This Identity & Style Manual will guide those who produce printed and digital materials for The Winnetka Public Schools in a variety of media:• letters• business cards• memos• fax messages• presentations

These design guidelines can also be applied to other media not currently specified in this manual such as:• certificates• newsletters• promotional items• other printed and digital materials

Please join us in supporting this effort to produce consistently-designed materials. An effective communications strategy is an effort shared by all members of our community of learners, not just a select few individuals or departments.

This is a living document. When appropriate, these guidelines will be modified, updated, and expanded.

The Winnetka Public Schools Identity & Style Manual • Page 5

The Winnetka Public Schools Identity & Style Manual has been developed to aid those involved in producing communications materials for The Winnetka Public Schools. This includes, but is not limited to, printed and digital documents. The Identity Manual is meant to serve as a reference tool. These guidelines apply to any item bearing the district logo or that serves to communicate district-level information (as opposed to building-level information). These guidelines are meant to be used for both internal and external district-level communication.

The identity of The Winnetka Public Schools consists of a system of logos, fonts, and specific terminology usages. Together, this system is designed to unify the district and present a clear, consistent image to our community of learners and the public. Consistent and widespread use of our identity will help identify documents, services, and publications as uniquely ours.

The identity elements (logo, fonts, layouts, and style) are the foundation of our identity. Altering our identity elements diffuses our image. This manual will specify the treatment of our identity elements in a variety of uses.

Vendors and organizations outside of The Winnetka Public Schools should contact the Director of Technology and Communications for assistance in obtaining and using identity elements of The Winnetka Public Schools.

Identity (Logo)

Type Attachment

Identity Elements

The logo for The Winnetka Public Schools consists of the tree graphic (icon) and the words (typographic signature) “The Winnetka Public Schools District 36.” The layout including the overlapping leaves onto the “W” should always be maintained along with the layout in the logo.

This logo should be used unaltered on all district-level printed materials.

Under no circumstances should the elements of the logo be separated, distorted, or altered. However, the tree graphic may be used separately as a visual element within a piece, but never as the sole identifier of The Winnetka Public Schools.

The logotype for The Winnetka Public Schools consists of the words “The Winnetka Public Schools” in the font, spacing, and style shown.

Type Attachments

The primary type attachment for the logo of The Winnetka Public Schools is the tag line, “A Community of Learners.” When included as a part of the logo, type attachments should appear below the “District 36” text block at the exact width of the text block in the font Book Antiqua Italic (the font size will vary depending upon the type attachment used). This font is widely available in the district. The tag line’s size should exactly match the width of the “District 36” text above. Type attachments should also match the exact color of the logo font.

When necessary, use character spacing controls, tracking controls, or set a type size using decimals (i.e., 14.8 pt) to precisely match the width.

Logotype Use

In an instance where a second occurrence of our logo would detract from a design (i.e., on the back of a note card that already displays the logo on the front), the secondary logotype may be used.

The logotype is a graphic image consisting of a specific type layout of the district name, “The Winnetka Public Schools” (using the same font as the logo with customized character proportions and spacing).

Type attachments are set at the exact width of the logo’s text block.

Use the logotype in addition to the main identity, never in place of it.

Color

The official color green used for The Winnetka Public Schools identity is:

These colors are references. Color matching varies depending upon your output device (screen, monitor, television, printer, etc.)

The identity should be used against a white or light-color background. Preferably, the background should be a solid color. If the background is patterned or is a photographic background field, the pattern should never compete with the identity.

The identity may also be used in all black or in a single solid color; it should never be used multi-colored.

The identity should be included on all materials that include the district’s name. The identity should be clearly visible and placed where it does not compete with the message of the material.

Clear Space

Clear space is the area around a visual element that is free of other elements (e.g., graphics, text, page numbers, page edges, bindings, etc.). For the identity of The Winnetka Public Schools, the amount of clear space recommended is equal to one-third the height of the identity.

The minimum reproduction size of the identity of The Winnetka Public Schools is 1.75 inches wide.

At smaller sizes, the identity reproduces better in black.

Trajan Pro

Trajan Pro is the font used in the identity of The Winnetka Public Schools logo. It is also used for the secondary logotype. This font is not widely available and should only be used in the identity and included in the exact layout and spacing provided in digitally-distributed logo graphics.

Possible font substitutions: none.

Book Antiqua

Book Antiqua is the primary font that should be used for the majority of text in all printed district communication. This font is available on all district Macintosh computers.

Possible font substitutions: Palatino, Times New Roman.

News Gothic MT

News Gothic MT is the secondary font that should be used in printed district communication. This font should be used for headings, subheadings, and other instances where a contrasting font is appropriate. This font is available on all district Macintosh computers.

Possible font substitutions: Arial, Helvetica.

Note: This manual is one example of the use of Book Antiqua and News Gothic MT in a district publication.

Several pieces of communications collateral have been designed that use the identity of The Winnetka Public Schools. These pieces include letterhead, business-size envelope, business card, note pad, note card, disc label, memo, and fax message sheet.

All of these designs are available as editable digital files in the appropriate formats for use on district computers. In the digital templates, fonts have already been selected to make using the templates as simple as possible.

PAC Abbreviation for Planning Advisory Committee

Pioneer Room The Pioneer Room is located in the lower level of

Crow Island School. Always capitalize Pioneer Room.

PTO Abbreviation for Parent Teacher Organization (do

not use periods: P.T.O.). Each school in The Winnetka Public Schools belongs to a PTO. No school in The Winnetka Public Schools belongs to a PTA.

Resource Center Resource Center is the term used for school libraries

in The Winnetka Public Schools. Always capitalize Resource Center.

spaces (after periods, colons, and semicolons) Use one space following periods, colons, and

semicolons. Do not use two spaces. If necessary, use your word processor’s “find and

replace” feature to remove additional spaces.

The Skokie School Always spell out the entire name The Skokie School,

including a capitalized The. Do not use Skokie Middle School or other formats.

post-graduate titles (in a list) When referring to a person with a title of Dr. in a list

TOSA Abbreviation for Teacher on Special Assignment (do

URL URL is the abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator
