Chapter Five: Estimated Birth Rate and Infant Mortality Rate for

    Selected Districts of India

    5.1. Introduction:

At the district level there are a few sources that provide estimates of birth rate and infant

mortality rate. The Census of India provides these estimates for the period of 1991 and 1981. In

this chapter we attempt to provide the indirect estimates of birth rate and Infant Mortality Rate

for the districts of India. The Reverse Survival Method is used to estimate the birth rate while the

IMR is estimated using the Children Ever Born (CEB) and children surviving (CS) data of RCH-

RHS. These estimates are available for the selected districts of India.

    5.2. Methodology:

For computation of birth rate, the following inputs are required:

    1. Proportion of population in 0-6 age group

    2. Annual exponential growth rate of population

    3. Survival ratio of population 0-6

It may be noted that the population in 0-6 are the survivals of births in the last six years. On

dividing the survival ratio by total population we will get the total births during the last six years.

The average birth rate will be derived by dividing it with 6. The equation for estimation of birth

    rate is as follows:

    BR1996-2001= (P0-6/ P2001 )* e-rt

    / SR0-6 * 1000 where P0-6 is the proportion of population in 0-6 age

    group

ris the average annual exponential growth rate

    t is 3 year.

The P0-6 and annual average exponential growth rate of population is taken from census of India,

2001 for all districts of India.

SR0-6 is the survival ratio for population in 0-6 age group.

For computation of Survival Ratio, we have used the CEB and CS of women in age

group 20-24 to get the life expectancy at birth. Using the U.N life table of South Asian Pattern,

    L0, L1-5 and 2/5th

of L 5-9 value are noted. Then Survival ratio for 0-6 is taken as L0+L1-

    4+2/5*L5-9/700000.

By multiplying the survival ratio with the percentage of 0-6 age group, we get the estimated

Birth rate. The Birth rate refers to six year period and so the annual average birth rate is

    estimated by dividing with 6.

The estimated birth rate is of indirect in nature. So the results should be used carefully. The

estimates are only for some districts and not available for all districts. The birth rate for selected

districts within each state is given in table 5.1.

The IMR is estimated using data of CEB and CS to women aged 20-24 from RCH-RHS. The

MORTPACK is used in computation of IMR.

The estimates of birth rate are seems to be reasonable while that of IMR varies largely. It issuggested that the estimates of IMR should be used carefully.
